The high performance cars you might have seen are usually a 1 out of 1000 specialty car driven by a separately trained officer. Maybe three or four of them for an entire state.

The stock engine is sufficient for the relatively low speeds most police will be traveling at before hammering their brakes at the next stop light. Police departments spend up to 50 grand per car just outfitting it with appearance items. Super top secret engine mods is simply impractical for a car that will statistically be junked before reaching 40k on the odometer.
When I was working air defense radar while in the Air Force our interceptors needed a 1.2 to 1 speed advantage to catch the target they were pursuing. At 140 mph for this target the Highway Patrol car would have to go 168 mph. That's tough.

Therefore 140+28 =168. If the the ratio were 1.4 , that would be 40% of the target speed which is 56.. So that's 140+56= 196. If it were 10% or 1.1 ratio, it would be 154. 14 extra of target speed. 2x5=10/ So a 1.(x) ratio will be a (x) of the target speed. See? Essentially you have to go 10%+ faster than the car you are pursuing in order to catch it. If you go the the same speed, you wont catch it unless it slows down or you can some how speed up. But you would have to go about 170 to catch it. Which is not probable.
I was just in a high speed chase late January.. The girl who car it was we facetimed her and told her report it stolen during the chase.. The news article put out Stolen car takes police on pursuit but the car wasn't stolen. We got away.. It's easy to get around that lol

I want to make an observation: if you are going to run, do not stop and let the camera record the license plate. Just run, but have a plan, because if you can’t lose the officer within the first 3 to 5 minutes you will need to contend with the other law enforcement officers called in via radio. Best way to lose a police officer is to have an escape plan, like a gate, or a pinch point that will terminate the chase, and break the visual contact with the police. This is easier on a motorcycle than a car, as a bike can weave between barriers that a car or SUV can’t drive between, this terminates the chase if done early enough. Know your terrain, no your back roads and side streets, know where you can hide a car or motorcycle from view, such as a garage, a barn or shed once contact is broken and visual contact gets turned into a search pattern by the police, hide, get out of the vehicle or off of the motorcycle and change your physical appearance and wait for the search for your vehicle to conclude.

Gotta admit though (I’m in Mexico btw), I was once doing like 110mph on a Corolla (lol), a couple of patrols (one state one highway) were on the side of the road after a small hill (so I couldn’t see them) and I blew past them. I saw both of them were out of their cars chatting, and they did signal me to pull over but being México I knew they weren’t even going to try. My exit was coming up, so even if they did manage to get on their cars, turn them on and get going, I was already on surface streets on a car that grabs no attention. I realize now I was stupid though (maybe? I still got away right?), for no good reason. I was only speeding, which is only a $500 peso ($25 USD) bribe (because it’s México, and cops will ask for bribes). Why did I run? No real reason except I didn’t feel like giving them money. Now I drive a BMW M240: I was once signaled by a stopped cop to pull over (going 87mph on a 70 zone) and I did stop because it’s not worth the risk. Do you think he would have caught me? Hell no! Here in Mexico they use V6 Chargers 😂 by the time he would have got up to speed I would have been a couple of miles away already, and the top speed on an M240 is higher than on a V6 Charger, but for what?

If you were only speeding or another minor traffic infraction, it’s not worth the trouble. Gotta admit though (I’m in Mexico btw), I was once doing like 110mph on a Corolla (lol), a couple of patrols (one state one highway) were on the side of the road after a small hill (so I couldn’t see them) and I blew past them. I saw both of them were out of their cars chatting, and they did signal me to pull over but being México I knew they weren’t even going to try. My exit was coming up, so even if they did manage to get on their cars, turn them on and get going, I was already on surface streets on a car that grabs no attention. I realize now I was stupid though (maybe? I still got away right?), for no good reason. I was only speeding, which is only a $500 peso ($25 USD) bribe (because it’s México, and cops will ask for bribes). Why did I run? No real reason except I didn’t feel like giving them money. Now I drive a BMW M240: I was once signaled by a stopped cop to pull over (going 87mph on a 70 zone) and I did stop because it’s not worth the risk. Do you think he would have caught me? Hell no! Here in Mexico they use V6 Chargers 😂 by the time he would have got up to speed I would have been a couple of miles away already, and the top speed on an M240 is higher than on a V6 Charger, but for what?
