Good update video, a bit more informative than the first ride reviews for people who end up buying these things. A bit of bummer about the electronic suspension, I'm interested in the tech but maybe a few more years for the Japanese brands it'll become a must have. I wonder how you would compare this bike to the latest Z1000SX, seems fairly similar but in a more traditional sports bike style rather than adventure style. Looking forward to more videos and articles as always.
I own the previous model GT, my previous bike was a naked Z1000, but I also rode the SX. The Kawa has more power, is more stable above 120 mph, but is somewhat less comfortable due to the more front-loaded riding position and less suspension travel, also, pegs are closer to the seat. Wind protection is better on the Kawa. The Tracer is more playful though, like a big motard, more nimble, and feels a little stronger in the low rpm. The Tracer is also quite better for a passenger. If you ride alone at high speeds, I'd recommend the Z. On the twisties they're equally fun for different reasons.
I bought one of these brand new in June. 4,000 miles later including some touring in awful weather conditions I can categorically say it's a great all round bike 👍

Personally, I have the Tracer 9 GT, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The engine is an absolute delight, and the versatility it offers is unbeatable. Incredibly fun.
Bought it last week. Traded in FJR. FJR was getting heavier for me and narrow handle bars weren’t comfortable. Had Previous generation tracer and I couldn’t forget the triple 😂. So went back and bought this one. Amazing bike and quick shifters are worth every penny.
I have a Mt09 SP '22 and was given the Tracer for a service. I was very impressed, felt smoother than the 09 around town and the screen was really nice, I felt like I was in a bubble from the wind. If touring is high on how you will be riding it's pretty nice. Yeah the quickshifter on my 09 is worth every penny.
I've owned this motorcycle for about a year and a half and in general really like it. I've got just a tick over 12,000 mi on it. But I must have a defective manual, because I read 4,000 mi interval, oil changes and 8,000 mi interval oil filter changes.
The 2023 model is the one. Mark my words it’s gonna be the king of this category for people who want all the fancy new features this bike has this year at 15k when I can’t find another bike with those same features under 26k

Thanks for a great review.. The best review are from a person who actually spent time with a motorcycle like yourself. In NH, the out the door price is $14,400 for a 2022. I think at that price point, including the bags and it's features your getting is a good value. There are a lot of competitors. in this class. I think the number one competitor is the Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro. Which is a great motorcycle as well. The GT PRO is near the$17, 500 price point. I was leaning towards the Tiger, but what swayed me towards the Yamaha is the engine, and the OEM bags that come standard. The engine is putting out 115 HP. The 900 cc class is perfect. I checked out the Tiger 1200, GS 1200, African Twin and also the Suzuki GSX1000 GT Plus. I found the 1200 cc adventure style bikes with the steel cases are extremely difficult to get on and off. The size and height for them is too tall. At 5'9'' for example the African Twin was a motorcycle that I know I would spend more time pickin up than riding. Another feature of the GT9 is the 17 inch front tire. Lets get real, I'm not about to be doing any crazy off road " The Long way around" rding. I was looking for a great motorcycle that is capable of touring. The GT9 is that motorcycle. I was also looking at the Kawasaki SX 1000 and suzuki GSX 1000 GT Plus. Great sport tourers with great performance. The downside is , and something that isn't talked about with reviews is the insurance cost. Both Suzuki and Kawasaki insurance cost are 3x more than what I am currently paying for a Speed Twin. Insurance on the 9 GT is extremely reasonable.

really wanted to get this Tracer last year, test-rode it and loved it, but there's no stock in Ireland. Got BMW F900XR instead and have no regrets whatsoever :) Great review, and has good footage quality too.
The F900 XR is known for water pump issues, check your coolant levels and for signs of blue coolant under the frame of the BMW. My water pump failed after 10 days of ownership, Waited 3 months for parts , that's right 3 months for BMW parts. Needless to say, I'm done with BMW.
I prefer the previous generation, and yes I have one. Just couldn’t take that new dash, and I didn’t want the semi suspension. But, that’s just me and I hope the newer owners enjoy their bikes. Cheers 👍🇨🇦🤪

A fair bit more $$$$, but after riding both, I opted for the Kawasaki Versys 1000 LT SE+. Down to the basics, they are two very similar bikes, but the Kaw seems a bit more well thought out, finished, organized... something subjective like that. Plus, a couple more farkles.

At this time, NO word from Honda about the NT coming to the US. Don't know what the hell they're waiting for. Even saw a Transalp is coming - but quiet on the NT. Not coming here would be a very big mistake. I'm looking at the '23 9 GT, but wouldn't hesitate to wait even longer for the NT1100.

Mine has 3000km and it makes some weird sounds from the left side of the engine looks like the chain is loose inside have you experienced anything like that?
Main problem with this is the 'Industrial' 'Golf Cart' look with lot of misarranged panels with gap. This doesn't look premium or high quality. As motorcycles are exposed machines people have an attachment to the machine in terms of perceived quality and components. something like a Rolex or Seiko watch with complex movements. this looks utilitarian for that price. Compared to Ninja 1000SX or NT1100 t it looks cheap.
I have to laugh, the manufacturer recommends extended oil changes and a filter every other oil change. Of course they do, that’s called designed obsolescence, with the user being the one being “designed”. I don’t listen to my Toyota dealer when they say 10K miles between changes either. Basic fluid maintenance is THE key to engine longevity, I feel badly for owners that swallow that bait without questioning it and spitting out that lure. This bike is too costly for what it offers, in my opinion.
Your legs sit tucked into the tank.. Today I rode in 59 degree weather and didn't experience windchill on my legs with summer ventilated touring pants.
Was going to buy one until I rode one. Engine brilliant gearbox/quick shifter brilliant Now the bad bits seat as comfortable as a piece of wood told by sales man you can buy a comfort seat! Suspension far to hard even on softest setting pillion peg position the worse my wife as ever encountered then the clutch grab on set off and the awful dashboard. Gutted really wanted one.
That's the way bikes are. Some fit, some don't - and that's really the most important issue. Can't be happy if you're not comfy, specially on something you're going to ride for hours. I've heard - not surprisingly - the exact opposite about the seat and pillion. Just have to try them before you buy them.
The seat feels comfortable at first but after an hour of riding its terrible. Had the bike for about 6 months put 650 miles on it and have not ridden it again. Also its very boring on the twisties. You dont feel planted.
For that 15k (or just a touch more) you could probably get an MT-10 with a bigger screen, some bags, and some heated grips. Would that be a better bike?
Depends what you want it for. I've never had an MT10 but 2 friends have, both good riders: one loved it, the other got rid of it after 6 months and called it the "Empty 10" for its terrible range. You pays your monies...
@@matthewharvey3666 Yeah I've heard that the range is a concern for some with the 10. That would, obviously, be much more difficult to change. The newest one is supposed to be marginally better but still not as good as the Tracer 9
How do you find the Tracer 9 on broken road surfaces? I'm sort of back and forth between sport touring and adventure bikes and my current Honda CBF1000 really doesn't do well over ruts, bumps, potholes and gravel whereas my previous V-Strom was great at this stuff. I don't actually ride off-road but I do like exploring away from the highway and in some of the more serene places the roads haven't been maintained since they were built decades ago!
I went from a Vstrom to the Tracer 9, and put ~13,000km on it this season going across Canada. I had an inadvertant stretch of gravel in northern Saskatchewan in the rain and made it at decent speed but it was sketchy as. Tires would fix that but I went to a Michelin Pilots for the second set and said forget the gravel because this bike is so fun to ride on the road it would be a shame to even put 80/20s on it. ...T7 is on order for dirt touring.
Lol. Sounds like you really enjoyed this one. I think I might prefer Suzukis s1000gt. The seating position might let you “get some” more around the twisties…but that’s not to say the Tracer 9 GT isn’t an amazing package.
At that price it better be good. Getting close to Ducati territory. Hate Yamahas blue color scheme. I do like their red, white, and yellow heritage/ anniversary colors though.

Given each journalist only has so much time, it's a benefit to us for any of these bikes to be in their hands longer than 300-500 miles. That tells us nothing. After a few thousand miles, though, there isn't much you don't know about the rig. Happy they can do these!
Trusted rumors say the 2023 will have a better dash and radar cruise. As long as they don't raise the price! I'm a buyer if so, and if the NT1100 doesn't come here.
I've had some taller bikes, and that's really what this is. Being upright is, at first, something to get used to, but once you crack off some miles, it is VERY much appreciated.
One of two motorcycles that I will never own just because of its ugly dash. Dash is one of the most prominent things the rider sees. I don’t want to stare at Squidward. The other bike is the Tiger 900 with that nonsensical tach. $15k of regret OTD. No thanks.
@@mikeskidmore6754 perhaps it depends on the market. In Europe we have a standard T9 and T9GT. GT is offered in the black/silver/blue colour, while T9 is only in red or matt grey. T9 is also £2k cheaper but it's missing the side cases, KYB suspension, cornering lights and heated grips. I especially liked the black/silver/blue color so it was a no brainer when buying my T9GT. Also, I do touring so I needed extra luggage :) really happy with my bike
It’s so disingenuous when you guys say shit like “the suspension is great but when you’re getting some in the corners it can tend to come unglued” - no one should ever be pushing hard enough on public roads to experience that and 95% of riders will never get close to that limit to begin with.
Disingenuous is a bit strong, no? These guys do, in fact, spank their bikes once in a while (for sure Adam does on the amazing roads here in SoCal). And if you do - and I hardly ever - it's good to know what's at the limit. Agree on going fast on public roads as a rule, though. You simply never know what you're in for. And no need when there are fabulous tracks just an hour or two away.
The T9GT- Still one of the least attractive Yamahas ever produced. Sad because it seems like Yamaha did so much right on this bike failed so miserably in the cosmetic aspect. Oh, and still too expensive for what's offered.
Compared to the competition in its class i think its the best value for money... I wonder what would be your pick for best value for money in the class? It isn't the most esthetically pleasing bike (they should have kept the blue from the previous model as an option) but it isn't as ugly as the mt09 either🤣
You can't get all the features this bike has, for that price, from any other manufacturer . But i do agree. It's ugly. Whoever designed Yamaha's bikes for the last 5 years, has really ugly taste. It's like they made one bike super ugly back in 2016 or so, then started designing all their other bikes around that one. It's a shame, because the FJ-09 and the Tracer 900 were beautiful. I have a 2015 FJ-09. I love looking at it.
Everything is relative, I think it's a great looking bike, especially since most newer bikes weren't just hit with an ugly stick, they fell from the top of the ugly tree and had a good whack from every branch on the way down.
@@jl9161 I need a 2-up bike, ergo my '15 FJR1300A, a fantastic ride whose sole flaw is its excess weight. Had Yamaha designed a mini-FJR for the 500 lb. weight class, we'd be talking. But this bike? Nope, can't get past the looks for all its inherent better qualities. Mindya, I almost bought a Tracer 900 GT before this FJR (my 2nd) but only because the PO had custom painted it, so it made it more tolerable to look at. Thankfully, someone else grabbed it before I did and I'm not unhappy on my FJR. But if I was riding solo and still ST shopping? I'd buy another Ninja 1000 SE in a heartbeat or the GSX1000GT way before I'd consider the T9GT.

Here in Brazil we just have 900 GT, bizarre ! Such a great motorcycle!
Hopefully Yamaha will bring the tracer 7 back to the us as a alternative to the Versys 650/v-strom 650

my old yamaha nouvo 5 made me pay attention to Yamaha, the rev still feels great, i appreciate the quality!
This is an option as I’m moving away from the sport nakeds for sport tourers. That fuel tank looks awesome.
I have the MT09 that have the same fuel tank shape, you feel inside the bike, not over.

I am not sure what minimum temperature in California is but when you say it is cold there, I am wondering if you know what COLD means ;-)

At least the dash is rumored to be coming in 23. To keep it agile, though, just get a smallish top box and that should do it.

Did I hear correct, you are only getting 32 mpgs? I get well over 40, the bike reads around 46 mpgs.
Love the bike, but as a Canadian.. hearing that you’re riding around California with the heated grips on “10” is quite concerning.
I went on a tour a few days ago with 5°c in the morning, heated grips on 6, and i was wearing leather perforated race gloves.
Rode around Lake Superior on the Trans-Can highway in May. Had the grips set on 5 and that was very warm.

Excellent review, very comprehensive. The windscreen does not look like the stock one. is it the touring Yamaha OEM or the Puig one?
I got a VStream windscreen for my FJ-09. Amazing. huge difference.

Looked hard at this well designed motorcycle but ultimately ended up on a 1250 GS for only $10k more😮. Spot on review.

You have to ride it pretty hard to get 32 mpg. I average 40-42 in the city.

Perfectly agree about the quick-shifter. Works very nice. Overall it offers a nice package for the money.

How one year is long term?
Given each journalist only has so much time, it's a benefit to us for any of these bikes to be in their hands longer than 300-500 miles. That tells us nothing. After a few thousand miles, though, there isn't much you don't know about the rig. Happy they can do these!
The riding position is still spoilt by the footpegs. Even in the more relaxed position the feet are too high and too far back.

Trusted rumors say the 2023 will have a better dash and radar cruise. As long as they don't raise the price! I'm a buyer if so, and if the NT1100 doesn't come here.
I was surprised how large this bike was to sit on in real life. It is massive.
Depends what you are accustomed to. My other bike is an R1250GS and the Tracer feels small and light compared to the BMW.
It's all fairing and fuel though, looks are quite deceptive. Strip it down, it's an MT09 with risers.
I've had some taller bikes, and that's really what this is. Being upright is, at first, something to get used to, but once you crack off some miles, it is VERY much appreciated.

One of two motorcycles that I will never own just because of its ugly dash. Dash is one of the most prominent things the rider sees. I don’t want to stare at Squidward. The other bike is the Tiger 900 with that nonsensical tach. $15k of regret OTD. No thanks.
The 2023 version is said to answer your (and many other's) prayers. Seems a new dash and radar cruise is on the menu.

@@mikeskidmore6754 perhaps it depends on the market. In Europe we have a standard T9 and T9GT. GT is offered in the black/silver/blue colour, while T9 is only in red or matt grey. T9 is also £2k cheaper but it's missing the side cases, KYB suspension, cornering lights and heated grips. I especially liked the black/silver/blue color so it was a no brainer when buying my T9GT. Also, I do touring so I needed extra luggage :) really happy with my bike

It’s so disingenuous when you guys say shit like “the suspension is great but when you’re getting some in the corners it can tend to come unglued” - no one should ever be pushing hard enough on public roads to experience that and 95% of riders will never get close to that limit to begin with.

Disingenuous is a bit strong, no? These guys do, in fact, spank their bikes once in a while (for sure Adam does on the amazing roads here in SoCal). And if you do - and I hardly ever - it's good to know what's at the limit. Agree on going fast on public roads as a rule, though. You simply never know what you're in for. And no need when there are fabulous tracks just an hour or two away.

The T9GT- Still one of the least attractive Yamahas ever produced. Sad because it seems like Yamaha did so much right on this bike failed so miserably in the cosmetic aspect. Oh, and still too expensive for what's offered.
Compared to the competition in its class i think its the best value for money... I wonder what would be your pick for best value for money in the class? It isn't the most esthetically pleasing bike (they should have kept the blue from the previous model as an option) but it isn't as ugly as the mt09 either🤣
You can't get all the features this bike has, for that price, from any other manufacturer .
But i do agree. It's ugly. Whoever designed Yamaha's bikes for the last 5 years, has really ugly taste. It's like they made one bike super ugly back in 2016 or so, then started designing all their other bikes around that one. It's a shame, because the FJ-09 and the Tracer 900 were beautiful. I have a 2015 FJ-09. I love looking at it.
Funny thing is that I've had more compliments on the looks than any bike I had in the past 20 years.
Everything is relative, I think it's a great looking bike, especially since most newer bikes weren't just hit with an ugly stick, they fell from the top of the ugly tree and had a good whack from every branch on the way down.
@@jl9161 I need a 2-up bike, ergo my '15 FJR1300A, a fantastic ride whose sole flaw is its excess weight. Had Yamaha designed a mini-FJR for the 500 lb. weight class, we'd be talking. But this bike? Nope, can't get past the looks for all its inherent better qualities.
Mindya, I almost bought a Tracer 900 GT before this FJR (my 2nd) but only because the PO had custom painted it, so it made it more tolerable to look at. Thankfully, someone else grabbed it before I did and I'm not unhappy on my FJR.
But if I was riding solo and still ST shopping? I'd buy another Ninja 1000 SE in a heartbeat or the GSX1000GT way before I'd consider the T9GT.
You find $15k too much? hah! in my country this cost $20k and thats msrp
