My Grand Seiko is such a charming, simple, elegant watch. I love the shape of the hands. I love the polishing and the flawlessness of the indicies. I love the depth of the dial. Yes, they have too many. If they'd just simplify the catalog and put watches in front of people, they will go far

Please do quartz vs mechanical episode!
I work as a firefighter/paramedic. During the past years I've come to the conclusion that quartz just makes to most sense for the job. Besides accuracy I also need shock resistance, water resistance and some sort of a timer. The watch should also be easy to operate with gloves on, and easy to read in the dark.
G-Shocks are the obvious choice for the job! However, I really like the idea of being able to service and repair the watch - to have something long-lasting. I wish to have a watch that is eventually a memento of the years spent in the fire rescue service, and maybe even to pass on to somebody.
I'm currently wearing mostly my Seiko Tuna, G-Shock Mudmaster or Mudman. I've currently been flirting with the idea of buying something more premium, a high accuracy quartz, such as a Grand Seiko with an F9 movement. I've been also browsing different mechanical divers, mostly Breitling and Tudor, but eventually always get doubtful about the compatibility with my job. Is the watch accurate enough? Is the watch shock resistant enough?
I've also been thinking about just saying "f*** the specs!" and getting a cool diver, without overthinking the compatibility with my job. There is something romantic about rocking a Breitling diver as a proper tool watch, and just wearing it no matter what.
The wrist watch is eventually only a backup, and there are no actual rules on what to wear. Most guys wear Garmin and G-shocks, but it could be whatever that aesthetically blends with the uniform.
This message has become already way too long and sinuous, and I'm glad if somebody had the patience to read this far. The topic of quartz vs mechanical is super interesting to me! It's obvious where they differ from another, but what I find interesting is where they meet. Are there quartz watches that have the same service and repairability as mechanical watches? Are there mechanical watches that have the same accuracy ja shock resistance specs as quartz watches?
Ps. Thank you for the show guys, great stuff!

Have to disagree about Grand Seiko. Sure, they put out (too?) many models, but you can also appreciate that as a good thing to have plenty to choose from. The bracelets might not be their strongest point, but I really do not think they are as bad as some people make them to be. I think the bracelets looks just fine, and if you can find the perfect sizing, they also wear very nice. The nature-ispired dial theme's also seems to be almost a joke for many, but I just can not find anything wrong with taking the inspiration from nature, or whatever it may be, as long as the results are on a Grand Seiko level. I happen to love and appreciate most of the Swiss brands that operate on a same price range as GS, but still, my humple opinnion is that there's just really not a competition there, GS dials and the details are just so much nicer and well finished. Ofcourse one can like, say Rolex Explorer's black dial over, for example that ''snowflake'' dial, mentioned on the video, but if you compare those two, and the work and the craftmanship and the attention to detail, I don't think anyone in their right mind would think that Rolex takes the crown there (pun intented). And do I even have to mention the mirror polishing (Zaratsu ;) on the cases and hands, and the actual human touch that goes on to making a Grand Seiko watch.... With some minor problems, I still think GS kicks just about every other brands behind in that price segment.

I think it's a phenomenon that we see popular watches as boring because we know the looks that well from seeing them a lot. They are not the craziest watches as they are reaching a huge range of people but still, a Sub as well as a Speedy don't have borring, plain designs if you imagine the watch world before and after them coming around.

@@marcusflack1523 exactly. It doesn’t help their collections are all over the place and the only real iconic piece they have is the Snowflake and even that is ruined by the awkward power reserve placement (personally). You see an Omega Seamaster, you instantly recognise what it is no matter what the variation is. Same with Rolex. Only proper GS geeks would see a GS and go “oh cool that is SBGJ(and some random numbers)!” Like Andrew said, they really need to sort out their bracelets as well. Movement tech, dials and finishing are important to a watch but consumers want the WHOLE package: brand value, heritage, wearability, value retention, etc!

About complaining about in-house movements: Once bitten, twice shy. If a third-party movement has failed me, I'm never going to buy another watch with that movement, regardless of how the watch makes me feel and regardless of the movement's popularity. But the greater reason for avoiding third-party movements these days is that they all have short power reserves and that sucks for anyone who wants to swap out watches and expects them to work. I'm not asking mechanical to compete with quartz, necessarily, but I do expect a baseline of competent behaviour... They have to earn the loyalty.

4th Season, already?! Amazing how far you guys have carried on with such a great show and platform to entertain the watch enthused. Very happy you all are back.
Some interesting topics you touched on in this episode. Hits a number of thoughts I've been having around my own watch collection journey at this moment. Collection reduction to focus on the watches that I have and really enjoy the most and I truly want to own. Versus the other watches I have or have thoughts about getting that may be more like watches that would be nice to have, but aren't a must... basically stuff that are best to admire but pass on buying if not sell if I already own such.
Brands mentioned I've been more interested in as of late are Zenith, TAG Heuer and Grand Seiko... so, maybe at least one of these next in, hopefully, the not too distant future.

Like when they post "my little humble/modest collection" and it's all rolex, AP, and other wicked expensive watches and watches that are hard to get....and I just think there's nothing humble about your TT Wimbledon next to your white gold blue dial day date next to your Kermit next to your pepsi next to your royal oak.
I also hate steering wheel pix.

I am a 23 yo firefighter student in finland and we also do some emt work. It is a must for us to have a watch for example to calculate breathing frequency. Most of us just use cheap casio watches and some more into watches might go more highend with something robust like sinn or marathon or a watch with a quartz movement because of the shock resistance. But we have no qualification for the watch we use and can use a fashion watch if we want. I quess its different in the hospital world because of the protection against infections and such. Would be nice to own something like the sinn ezm 12 with the pulserotor exept for under 1000€ maybe.
Anyways im trying to say that we get to wear what ever watches we like so maybe you dont need all the certifications but still it would be a very small market.

Hey, I graduated a couple years ago (P111)! Now working at the capital fire dept as a firefighter/paramedic. Nice to see other Finnish firefighters interested in watches. I'll keep it in English in case somebody else is curious about this too.
What do you currently wear during training? Does anybody on your class wear a mechanical watch? I've come to the conclusion that quartz just makes to most sense for the job. Besides accuracy I also need shock resistance, water resistance and some sort of a timer. The watch should also be easy to operate with gloves on, and easy to read in the dark. However, I would really like to get a premium mechanical watch... But always doubt about the compatibility with the job.
I'm currently mostly wearing my Seiko Tuna SBBN049 and G-Shock Mudmaster GWG-1000-1A3ER.
Stay safe ja tulikukkoa turpaan 😎👊!

@@darth_jarjar123 yeah might aswell train my english a little more😄 at the moment im just using a dan henry 1970 (black) on a super worn out canvas strap. Its my only watch so dont have much options unless i want to bring back my first watch ever (timberland fashion watch) but i doubt it😂 i bought that dan henry when i was in the army and my timberland got a little water inside it.
I thought about buying a quartz piece when i graduate so that i can wear it while working. Have been trying to decide between: seiko sne 585. Scurfa diver one gloss orange dial and i also love that new citizen retrozilla (bn0227-25x) because it reminds me of the full lume dial on our smoke diving gear! Also the bezel should be super easy to operate.
I think im the only one interested in watches because almost everyone else is wearing sport watches like suunto.

@@jimppa86 I would love to hear about the experience going through training with the Dan Henry 1970! Any problems with accuracy, shock resistance or water/moisture resistance? How is the NH35 movement keeping time? I would imagine the bezel screw isn't too easy to operate with gloves on?
I actually got into watches during my studies! I bought the classic Casio F91W when I started school, but I decided to scrap it after some moisture started building inside. I then ended up buying the classic G-shock DW-5600E, but eventually had to give it away because the recessed adjust button was borderline impossible to use with any gloves on. Learned the hard way what I need from my watch 😅...
Scurfa Diver One is a really solid choice, a true professional watch! Out of your three choices I would definitely go with the Scurfa Diver One, if you are able to get one! It's got some real professional character to it. The only downside is that it doesn't have the ISO6425 certification like the two other watches. Citizen Retrozilla would be my second pick. The Eco-Drive movement is the best value solar charging movement on the market. SNE585 has a sapphire crystal, unlike the Retrozilla, but I would still personally opt for the Retrozilla out of the two. Seiko has some great value automatic and battery powered quartz watches, but I think Citizen Eco-Drive is the way to go, if you are going for a solar watch.
What is your budget? I can try to recommend some watches I've seen fellow firefighters at my fire department use. The variety with watches at my fire department is crazy... anything from Casio to Rolex 🤪.

@@darth_jarjar123 the dan henry has been holding up suprisingly well. No problem at all and also i have been playing a lot of golf with it so seem like that nh35 movement can hold up to shock pretty well👀 the inner bezel screw is nice to use in ordinary life to time cooking and such but like you sayd its not easy to use with gloves on and also quite easy to accidentally turn.
Seiko sne 585 would be the best of the three if i also intend to use that watch off duty but like you sayd i think citizen or scurfa is the way to go! Scurfa is a little cheaper but harder to get and citizen has that nice 5 year guarantee! Also with citizen i dont have to worry about changing the battery even tho it wont be a hard task to do. Quess i will just keep an eye on those scurfas and see if one pops up around my graduate day.
I wish i would have the budget to use a rolex as a toolwatch😂 I have mainly been looking watches around 250-500€. Also looks like your station is full of watch fans😄 i have only been working in a small station so best you can see there is some casio and suunto watches.

@@jimppa86 With a 250-500 eur budget Scurfa is king! Some other good options could be the classic Casio Duro and Tissot Seastar 1000 quartz. Duro is a classic, with a lot of modding parts sold online if you're into it... Domed sapphire crystals, and different bracelets with matching endlinks. Tissot Seastar quartz has the best quartz movement in the given price range! The ETA F06.412 movement is a high accuracy quartz (HAQ) movement with both HeavyDrive and PreciDrive technologies. It's really accurate, -+10 sec a YEAR! You also get 300m of water resistance, sapphire crystal and mineral bezel ring.
Most of the guys in my shift use Garmin. But there are a few watch nerds as well 😎.

Cheers, mates! Watching the episode now. With respect to AEPoe, here are my quaintest thoughts as they come to life and fade away… I want an AET wall clock, not watch, with date at 3 o’clock and the AET logo at 9 o’clock (sorry, Andrew). I’d never thought I’d own a G-Shock, but they’re wicked fun. I like watches because they’re engineering artistry. Andrew Morgan and Tim Mosso could visually and emotionally describe watches in a podcast without images. Non-negotiable: I must smile every time I look at the watch - I kicked the Kermit out of my watch box when I became frustrated with it (bad service experiences, bad association). Are we now drinking when George says “GP”? Healthcare watch: the St. Gallens Rescue watch can be tossed into an autoclave. Never stop BYOI - Ianos looks wicked cool!! Welcome back guys!!!

Geared more towards George bamford, if you did create a dr/nurse style clip on watch it would be cool to have a normal watch, that had normal lugs, which then you could swap out for a clip on attachment on one set of lugs, and the other side an end piece. This way they could wear when at work and off work !

Grand Seiko Need to do a few things... Improve their bracelets, don't release any new watches for a year, instead spend that time designing a top notch bracelet, micro adjustment is the key thing needed; They need to have more of an identity for their watches instead of SBGxxx and stop having this text on the dial at 6 o'clock, just have Japanese Made or something, no number required; They need a killer diver that is 40 mm.
