This is where thrift store shopping can save a lot of money. You can try a new brand or style for pennies compared to a new purchase. If you dont like them, donate them back. I used to be a little snobby about thrift store clothing, but after washing, it's hard to remember which I bought new.
A super helpful video. Thank you. I too like supporting American brands. Is there a way to know where a fashion brand is based & where they source their labor & materials?
Premium Levi’s, all the way! They have so many fits, great quality, and less expensive than designer. You can tell the premium Levi’s because they have a capital E LEVIs in the tag. Non premium have small e in the tag.
Great video Kay! I am a petite (5’) 63-year old and I have learned so much about petite dressing from watching RUclips videos. Your video was very helpful and thanks for the links to the petite influencers. Maybe for the first time ever I am able to understand what to look for in clothes, pants especially, that flatter my petite hourglass frame. And yes, for me the answer is jackets, jackets, jackets! Thanks again, this over-60 girl is feeling just great!
I’m definitely in the 100% cotton camp, they don’t go baggy like stretch jeans. I just got a new pair of cotton pants with a little elastane. When I left on a short drive, they were tight. Twenty minutes later when I arrived, they were at least two sizes bigger, they wouldn’t even stay up. I’m always looking for all-cotton pants, almost any cotton ones at all. I hate Spandex in anything.
This was an amazingly comprehensive video, Kay (the video I never thought I needed but I sure did!😂). Your guide will remove a lot of frustration the next time I shop for jeans. Thank you!
I agree it is a process to find the right jeans for you, my perfect fit jeans are the Silver brand. They are worth the money and very well made. I’m 65 5’4” 145 ( just a year ago I was 187) and I was able to wear the same jeans through the whole transition, I just bought the same brand but in my current size. Mid rise jeans curvy fit I am an hour glass figure as well.
Kay this was such an informative and thoughtful video. Shopping for jeans is painful and this will help me in my search for a comfortable but stylish pair of jeans!
My experience as a shorter petite woman who lives in (mostly premium) jeans is that our height, size, and proportions (short/long torso or legs) are just as important as our body shape in choosing flattering jeans (all clothes, really). As a shorter, medium sized petite with slightly wide hips & average length legs, I personally look best in slim-straight jeans & avoid boot cuts/flares because they overwhelm me. Re premium denim quality: I love how they fit and feel but in my experience some pairs do stretch out badly. It’s happened to me with more than one brand and unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be as simple as avoiding jeans with x percentage of stretch or polyester. 🙁
That's so true! I purchased a pair of really nice ( and priced) jeans- so happy, but they started falling apart in no time! Then I realised that elastin in them is making them so thin, especially around pockets.
This is so coincidental I just tried on all my jeans, I have jeans for Talbot, Loft,Madewell and Landsend I decided the Talbot modern ankle jean looks best on me. So I’m going to buy another pair in a darker wash if they are available.
I never enjoyed shopping in-store that much, they are always much too hot and airless inside. Even with good service, like at Nordstrom, it’s a pain. Plus, bricks and mortar shops don’t have much selection anymore, there are too many sales racks of items that flopped online. I don’t think I’ve ever found anything on a store sale rack, there’s always a reason no one else bought those things: off colors, poor fit or fabric, weird patterns, construction problems, etc.
So many options ! And to think that guys can merely go by waist & inseam sizes in their favorite brand they've worn for decades ! 😂 After decades of brand loyalty to Lee & Levi , I felt as if I was abandoning old friends when I changed to Nine West - bodies change , brands change sizing , fabric , quality , etc. . Oh dear !! So , preferring classic slim straight leg or barely boot cut , it was challenging yet satisfying to finally find my new " holy grail " in jeans ! 👖💙
Love this comprehensive and very helpful video Kay. I can't wait to do some jean shopping for the fall season! Thank you for the special section on petite styling too!
This is a wonderful jean primer. It will be my go-to when considering jean purchases. Thank you! You look fabulous in your various jean silhouettes. ❤️
You provide such great content, helpful and understandable without talking 'down' to your listeners. I live in jeans, but have found that Not Your Daughter's (NYDJ) jeans to be a good fit for me. Luckily, your tips will help us navigate through the many choices out there. Because I think we never stop looking, even when we find a few that work.
loved this video. Packed full of good information that I plan to use on my next jean purchase. All of your blogs and videos have been helpful to me. I wish I had this information when I was much younger. But it's great to look your best at any age !
Great guide for buying jeans ...thank you, Kay ! (BTW I really like that particular shade of lipstick you are wearing .... it is similar to the color of your vest.....orchid ?)
Happy Saturday, Kay. This was very informative. As a petite, I also shop my jeans from Banana Republic because they have petite sizes. I have had quite a bit of luck with them as far as quality and fit. I will be trying on all my jeans and check out the yoke and other elements that you suggested. I never realized there is so much that you should consider when purchasing the right pair of jeans. Thanks so much.
Speaking of distressing… I saw a younger woman the other day whose jeans were missing the front thigh area, from the pocket area to below the knee. She was seated so couldn’t tell you how much was missing in back. Good for a laugh!!
I’ve never found a pair of jeans/pants/trousers that fit my narrow hips and my straight waist. I’m not an inverted triangle, more of a rectangle, my shoulders are narrow, too. I do better in mid-rise, but still can’t find any that aren’t baggy on my hips. It’s such a problem that I wear skirts and dresses, or leggings/sweatpants at home in winter.
Kay, you put so much time and care in this video. Some things I needed to hear again, while some tips were brand new. I love wearing jeans, but feel I could absolutely be more comfortable. Will keep searching. My biggest complaint about jeans is how the snap always sticks out so I can’t get a flat front. Will premium denim eliminate this? Thanks so much. Enjoy your weekend
Hmm. I think that’s just one of those things you have to be careful about when trying them out. But I don’t seem to find that issue as often with premium denim. Thanks for watching! 💕
Hi Kay, I really like your channel. However, I am 5.5 foot and have muffin tops. High rise is a pain! Even mid rise goes high for me. What you need is a jeans, that is straight from the hips to the waist, since there is no waist! Take a look at 7 for all mankind Asher jeans. That is also a premium US brand. Poeple who do not have that issue, do not understand this and always believe high rise is the solution. NO, that is not it. Tschau Petra
WOW! I'd have to say that the City Beauty products you're using are definitely working. Your skin is totally GLOWING!! I love all the tips for finding the right fit for jeans. I like that you said why some jeans seem to have a lot of fabric in the stomach/crotch area when seated. I have a pair of jeans that does that. Guessing that the zipper is too short? The pink sweater vest is such a great color on you. I really like the t-shirt too. But it's driving me "crazy" not knowing what it says since your sweater vest covers up most of the letters. Please let us all know what it says on your t-shirt! Pretty Please!!!!
Jeans have always been the hardest thing to fit me. My tummy is bigger than the average jean and I have a flat walkers bottom. Then there is the issue of being too long for a shorter 5" ft 2" woman. Therefore it is almost impossible for me to find a fit....the bottom is often baggy. Thank goodness for modern fabrics that "give." I just bought two pairs of straight leg Levi "Signature" for $30.00-that is the most expensive pair of jean I have every bought!
You look so young in this video, Kay. Thanks so much for this information. I do buy my jeans online, for the reasons that you stated. Sometimes it’s simply much easier to shop from home.
Loved this segment. Just an FYI: I tried to apply the KAY50 discount code to the invisicrepe body balm and sculpting cream and I received a message that said the code did not apply to this product. Hmmmm?
I am 73, weigh 170# at 5’5… my middle is my problem. Thanks for the tips. Now to search for the right jeans. And really?…. Is it possible to tuck things in when your middle is your biggest challenge?
Hi there. Thank you for this video! I would love clarification on one point: when you say prints can look dated. that could mean one of at least two things and I’m curious which it is. Do you mean that there is some size of print repeat, or some format of print, that is dating on older women, even if it is the latest trend in stores? Or do you mean that, some older women (me) have enough age on us that we have accumulated tons of clothes which can include prints that we bought 10 years ago, and that are too strongly associated with the trends of 10 years ago? And we might nostalgically put those on because we loved them, but thereby date ourselves by trotting out that old trend?
Great video Kay! So much information to process. I would love to see Part 2 on how to style these different type of jeans, specifically length and sizing of tops, accessories as well as shoe options within the guidelines you presented here. Wonderful presentation!
This is very useful information. I've learned a lot from your videos. You put so much hard work into it . Thankyou Kay ❤ Plus, you look very pretty in your pink ❤God bless xx
Thx, Kay, you put a lot of work into this. However, my problem with jeans was not addressed. US jeans have added an inch of fabric in the width where the thigh begins like a pucker- I am talking about straight not curvy jeans. My legs on the outer rim are not chunky at the top and I cannot fill out these jeans
I really can't believe people put this much thought and planning into buying the perfect pair of jeans, or the perfect outfit. Where I live, the "perfect" outfit just isn't a big deal. Most of my clothes come from e-bay and I stick to Talbots, Ralph Lauren and Ann Taylor petites, and I go with stuff that isn't too old looking (I'm 71) or too young looking, but other than that, I'm not that worried about it.
You’ve likely already found your “perfect” jeans. As my body changes, and jeans options are more plentiful than ever, I’m on the hunt for a great fitting pair of jeans. No more saggy butt for me. 😂
Hi. I want to get those two creams from City Beauty but when I put in your discount code, it doesn’t work. Any suggestions? Never mind. I got it to work. 😊
Such a great video! Thank you! I’m only 4’10” and fortunately I can tailor myself. I do love the Talbots jeans and recently I bought s pair of 7 for all mankind that I really love.
So very much info!!! THANK YOU, Now can you give me 10 more hours in the day ?? haha. Really you always put in so very much info and guidence for all of us. project for fall is going through my closet and getting the best jeans I can find. I am now ready to shop on line ( you made great points as to WHY to do that) Thank you again. Have a great day!!
Very helpful information - can’t wait to see what you have for us at your blog too. Will look for the 100% cotton jeans because the others make me overheat.
Brilliant video. In my 70's but love my jeans. I tend to go for high rise straight. Although I do have skinny jeans too. In summer I like ankle length. Next time I buy jeans I'll know exactly what to look for.
The petite RUclipsrs you mentioned were all small sizes! We petites come in all sizes but there are very few sites that cater to petites over size 8!! Cathy Over 50 is a good one. I own 3 pairs of jeans, light, dark and black and that covers most situations for me. I am straight up and down and normally if a Jean fits well I the hips the waist is too small ! Over the years I have figured this out and when I buy a new pair, the first thing I do is stretch the waist buy soaking the waistband and using a tension rod (for curtains!). Works every time!
You look so cute in the wide legged jeans and blue striped top! I love trying out the various styles and have enjoyed all except for low risers. I appreciate the tips for each..thanks for great content!👍🏻
Thank you for this video. I mostly buy my jeans online. Mostly from eBay. You can get some good deals there. I have purchased some from stores. But I have way too many pairs to buy premium jeans. It would kill me to pay the price for them. I do know my measurements. I never thought about the yoke or pockets. I don’t usually look at my backside. But I guess I will. I’m going to need the larger pockets. I just told my husband I need a full length mirror. I’m not sure where I can fit it in. Maybe in the office. But I need one so I can start taking pictures of my outfits.
I’m 5’5” and have a long torso with short legs and do better with short length. I’ve tried to take a new pair of jeans into the local tailor (I live in a small town and have only been able to find 1) and the lost my brand new jeans! The last time I went into the store-front, they had also lost clothing for the person in front of me and the person behind me in line. I feel so stuck trying to get pants that fit appropriately and that I can’t even go get them hemmed.
Kay, thank you for this video. My biggest takeaway was to stop thinking I would do better finding the right premium denim for me if I could JUST to get to a Nordstrom or other good store (nearest one to me is >90 miles).to try on a lot of sizes & styles. I have family in Cincinnati so I know what great stores are available to you so when I heard YOU say it really is best to just order online even though it means lots of returns, that surprised me but was what I needed to hear! Ok now I will take my best shot and get started! I’m 5’3”, short-waisted with shortish legs, but I do mostly live in jeans of various colors & washes and I’ve been enjoying the new silhouettes the past 2-3 years. I have been wanting to try some of the ankle length Mother styles, and so now I’m just going to go online, survey the options, read the fine print about measurements & fabric content, place an order, and get this process started! Thanks!
This is where thrift store shopping can save a lot of money. You can try a new brand or style for pennies compared to a new purchase. If you dont like them, donate them back. I used to be a little snobby about thrift store clothing, but after washing, it's hard to remember which I bought new.
Some of my favorite pieces were thrifted.
A super helpful video. Thank you. I too like supporting American brands. Is there a way to know where a fashion brand is based & where they source their labor & materials?
one of my fav pair ever I got was from a second hand store, good brand name jeans-price 3$ and it was 50% off that day!!
Premium Levi’s, all the way! They have so many fits, great quality, and less expensive than designer. You can tell the premium Levi’s because they have a capital E LEVIs in the tag. Non premium have small e in the tag.
Levi's don't fit me. The waists are too small, the thighs too wide and calves too tight.
Love Levi’s too. Thank you for the tip about premium Levi’s!

Wonderful! Thank you for watching!😊
Thank you for including petites.

I’m 5ft 4 rectangular and I swear by Levi’s straight leg dark wash jeans, they always look classy. Mary,in Ireland, never miss your chats

Absolutely! Thank you for watching!😊
Omg! I never knew all this information about why my jeans never look or feel good! Thank you
Great breakdown of the specific areas (yoke, pocket spacing, pocket size) that affect how the jeans look on your bootie. Thanks!
Thank you!😊
Great Video! Thank you Kay!

Lucky Legend and LEVI’s are my favorite… I’m in the 100% cotton or 99% +1 elastin camp. I wear jeans almost everyday and need them to last.
👖 You've discussed "stovepipe jeans" b4 & that's where I've been leaning (f.y.i) Thanks for the intel!
Kay, you put so much time and care in this video. Some things I needed to hear again, while some tips were brand new. I love wearing jeans, but feel I could absolutely be more comfortable. Thanks!😊
Wow!!! What a thorough guide-you covered things I never would have imagined. Thanks for covering such an essential topic.

You’ve likely already found your “perfect” jeans. As my body changes, and jeans options are more plentiful than ever, I’m on the hunt for a great fitting pair of jeans. No more saggy butt for me. 😂
Great content! Learned a lot today. Thank you! 😀
Thank you!😊
You’re right. I’ve had better luck ordering jeans online and trying on at home and then returning the ones that don’t look good.
Hi. I want to get those two creams from City Beauty but when I put in your discount code, it doesn’t work. Any suggestions? Never mind. I got it to work. 😊
It’s working now. I think they must have set it to go live at the wrong time. But I tried it and it’s functioning now. 🥰

Thanks!
Absolutely! Good luck!😊
