When drilling new deck hardware you should do the "drill fill drill" method. Drill over sized holes through the deck and fill with expoxy resin cotton flock mix. Once set drill the correct size holes. This will stop water from rotting your deck core.

Fingers crossed all is well! thank you for the awesome video, love following your adventure. As a french I did miss not hearing Timo's amazing Italian accent ;p Much love to all of you
You have done an amazing job of refitting that sleek racer, my biggest concern was that I saw no one wearing a face mask while working with and sanding the fiberglass. Maybe you did and I just didn't see it. She is going to give you many years of fun ocean sailing. God job to all who helped bring her back to life! ⛵️✌️

Awesome work! That boat is so lucky that you guys adopted her and gave her a spa day...year..two year spa treatment. I'm going to have dreams of surfing that boat down a wave, just on the wrong side of the hairy edge of control while screaming yeeeeehaw like I was on a 100' tall windsurfer! One might assume that you are following a similar project in Port Townsend WA, on the former Duracell racing boat that is being converted to a cruising yacht.
Hey Russell, we started our project around the same time as Duracell so didn’t hear about them until a bit later but up you are very right in that they are similar projects in many ways, although they are changing their boat in a more major way than we are - very cool project 👍🏻
Looks like a great job on the refit but having sailed on one of these beasts I dont know if I would want to convert one into a "family cruiser". They are a boat that is AWESOMELY fast..... but also AWESOMELY uncomfortable in how they deal with sea state. Unless you are blasting along at full tilt boogie the ride will pound you to pieces. And at full tilt boogie you do nothing but hang on for dear life.
Hey Rage nice to hear from you, yes you might be right, but so far the cruising we've experienced has been remarkably comfortable, and feels very safe for the conditions we expect to be in... stay tuned to see how we go in the future!
Hahaha nice comment - I guess the videos make it look appealing because they show in a short time what has been achieved, which maybe seems satisfying? And it is satisfying once it’s done, but you probably wouldn’t have felt jealous having been there watching the long be version ;)
Is that hull shape good for a family cruising boat, it looks real flat and pounding would have to be an issue, also keel depth limits you as well. I suppose boats are always a compromise, but for me this boat doesn't seem conducive to a comfortable and practical world cruising boat. But each to their own and I suppose if I was 40 years younger I'd feel differently about such a hull shape for cruising. Either way good luck and hope you're happy with her
We understand your worries - so far she’s been very comfortable (on the sail up from nz), let’s see how the rest of the trip goes, but overall she’s been so much fun to sail and the giant cockpit has been great environment to live in and the fast passages, we hope we continue to enjoy like this :)
Hi Andrew, we're interested to do this one day, but would need to involve a naval architect and probably buy more lead - both of which are out of our budget for the moment
Probably all ready been asked but now it’s nearly a bare shell why do you not have them dipped or blasted to get all the crap off and save a lot of time. There’s blasting available which is gentle on the metal.
She was designed built and raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa and competed in a few vendée globes, the first of which was in 1992 when Nándor raced her coming 5th, becoming the first non Frenchman to finish the race. We plan to make a full history episode soon :) and you can read more on our website sailingnv.com
@@SailingNV I also have an Open 60. First generation. She was abandoned in France and we gave her a new life. I love what you did with your boat. Well done.
OH MY GOODNESS!!! You want to transform THIS into a "family cruiser"!?!? It's like buying a Lamborghini to pop to a grocery store. :-)) And I'm SO gonna watch how it goes. I hope there is a boat tour on the way, will check the channel. WOW!
Wouldn't you want to shorten the keel and add on a larger bulb for cruising? Seems like y'all would be really limited exploring having that deep of a draft?
We did think about it when we originally bought the boat but it wasn’t in our budget this time, maybe one day… but we’ve Kim do if grown to love the keel - it takes our breath away every time we see it 😍 and makes us super stable at anchor
Playing on amd especially under a crane is just straight nomination for the darwin-award. Im sorry for the hard words, but i saw someone die because some straps snapped, and seeimg people do this makes me want to throw up.
A great job, but the cold rolling of the boom is not ideal, it should be put in the oven to have the necessary mechanical resistance, that boom at the point of the new rolling is fragile, it is better to go out only in good weather and avoid strong winds, they are of the opinion that some structural work should be carried out by specialized companies. to be safe, the sea is very dangerous, otherwise a great job.
Would've been interesting, how you modified the interior to make it usable as a family boat. I don't see any difference in terms of usability as a family boat on the outside, too...
You obviously know a lot about boats, so I'm sure you have considered this already, but how confident are you in how the bulb is attached to the bottom of the keel? My understanding is the high performance racing boats are designed for performance and push the limits of design in this regard... perhaps sacrificing some safety and durability in return for speed. For open ocean sailing, a durable keel is of course critical. There have been infamous cases where the bulb has pop off these keels (see the Mike Plant story). Don't want to be a downer as you start your journey, just hope you are considering possible issues with this keep type. Best of luck and safe travels. Enjoyed watching you guys work. Inspiring.
Hey Bill, thanks so much for your comment, it is indeed not something to be taken lightly, timo did do an inspection of the bulb and it’s attachment, removing all filler to see the boat attachment and he considers it safe for another 5-10 years but does anticipate to rebuild when we reach the med! :) thanks again, we really appreciate to have comments like this 👍🏻
Nice refit! But at 0:45 you gave me serious cringe. If a crane operator allowed someone standing under a moving load in my marina they would have got fired. I've seen my good share of boats slip out of the slings for alot of crazy of reasons, including a sling brake. Please dont do that again and be safe!
Hi, kind of stumbled on your channel after watching an episode on another channel. Interesting content and a great project - but can I offer one piece of advice? Please turn down the volume of the royalty free music. It grates on you after a while and turning the volume down also turns down the volume of the commentary. Cheers
Hey sure thanks yeah def always appreciate the tips! our video editing def needs some fine tuning! I do now try to always make the music a lot lower than how it comes because as you’ve noticed it’s a lot louder than the other stuff…. But I can’t remember if I started doing this before or after this vid… do you know if you find the same thing with the last couple of vids we’ve made for example or is it better now?
You reinforced a bunch of places. Was there any calculation done for this? Open-60 aren't exactly known for their overprovisioning, imho, so reinforcing certain parts has a good chance of just moving the overload elsewhere?
We reinforced by the deck fittings because they were old and starting to leak. Our boat was built in 1990 so it was overbuilt and we’ve chatted to Nándor Fa who designed and built it, about any major alterations 👍🏻
I don't know if its Nico's accent or something in the way you've made the video's or something more fundamental in your personalities and relationship, but on screen Nico has always rather given me the feeling less that he's fixing the boat and more that he's loving it and your future into being. Really quite wonderful to watch. Thank you for sharing what's interesting but actually quite an intimate process referring to both the life building and the boat building. It would be great to see a bit more of the inside of the boat now your on the water and have it lived in a little. I found the inside slightly difficult to get my head round without soft furnishings and the detritus of domestication to dress it. (apologies if i have missed a video somewhere)
Hey thanks for the lovely comment! Timo does indeed LOVE the boat haha. Yes we are well overdue to do a video of the Interior, we’ve just been trying to perfect the inside still a bit first haha, it’s coming soon…
Holy sh*t... an open stern... In a big sea with following waves it could swamp the entire deck! I don't even want to think of what could happen in a storm. The only hope is that the boat will be faster than the waves but I doubt it.
These boats are raced in round-the-world events in some truly crazy weather. The decks do sometimes get swamped - but they're designed to drain just as fast as they flood. Also, it's a planing hull, so if you're in a following sea, you're really moving. My bigger concern would be how two people would handle a boat like this in heavy conditions without working themselves to exhaustion - although this class of boat has been raced solo in trans-ocean races. There's not a big margin for error on these kinds of boats though, they'll bite you *hard* if you let the boat get out of control.
Racing boats have a really thin hull, be very aware of stress cracks, these boats are made for a few years of racing, not much tought is given when designing for real world yachting and lifetime of the boat, keep this al in mind and youll have the best (and probely most expensive to keep up) cruizing yacht on the 7 seas
Hey Ben - this might be true of more modern race boats, however ours was built more than 30 years ago to do the Vendee Globe, by Nandor Fa (who we've chatted to about the boat and the construction), and the boat was overbuilt and also exteneded and reinforced in Australia in 2008 for racing in tough offshore conditions - hence why it was overbuilt again
Omg... your husband is like mine... probably just washes the epoxy off his hands with acetone when he's done. 😆I don't know about those guys! ;). This is a great project. Thanks for sharing!
Nice interior doesn't make a family cruiser, seaworthiness, low acceleration and stable, not nervous behaviour does. Nice boat, nice job for what it was designed to do
Nice fast sailing boat, but I doubt you will get into many many marina's with such a draught ! LOL. (Or close enough to shore for safe anchoring). Amazing to see people start over again and again what people have done for decades (centuries) ? Recoup an 'old' racing hull and make a fast cruiser out of it only to learn that the beauty of sailing isn't speed ...
Thanks for the comment, but we’ve both been cruising for a long time and we chose this boat for what we’re interested in doing at the moment - fast offshore cruising. You’re right about us being restricted to the yards and marinas but we are aware of this and ideally prefer not to use them if we can and prefer to be self sufficient (watch out for our next vid - it’s going to be on this topic). As for anchorages, so far (in nz and Fiji), we’ve had plenty of choice (and our draft means we’re extra stable) and enjoy having such a huge cockpit (especially with a baby and dog!)
@@SailingNV Famous last words - I won't be checking out your next videos. Been there - Done that ! Check out this made from scratch world cruiser which is also fast but practical. Happy travels and enjoy. ruclips.net/video/BeEx8NL6Y1M/видео.html

Right - this would be a great video!! Will bear this in mind for a future episode 👍🏻👍🏻
why painted 2 waterlines?
:) thanks again, we really appreciate to have comments like this 👍🏻
Does the boat have an inside all I saw was deck.
Haha yep will make a vid of the interior mods soon - we kind of completely rebuild the interior so we’ve got a lot of material to sort through
Nice refit! But at 0:45 you gave me serious cringe. If a crane operator allowed someone standing under a moving load in my marina they would have got fired. I've seen my good share of boats slip out of the slings for alot of crazy of reasons, including a sling brake. Please dont do that again and be safe!
yes you are totally right, we were caught up in the moment!
I would use a respirator next time ya spray paint. Im sure you got a headache. 🥴 Ok Ok I seen ya use it later in the vid hahah
8:56 he’s making a new boat out of 5400 or a big mess. I laughed.
Have you ever sealed a hatch on a boat before?
@@SailingNV no, but I have sealed lots of other things. How was the squeeze out?
@@alexnelson8 it was good thanks 👍🏻 and no leaks yet :)
1:23 - and i think to myself it will be a loooooong story
Haha yeah… that bit took a while ;)
i wrote a comment and REINFORCED IT!
🙃
Looks fast 👍⛵️
Yeeeeeah 💨🤙
If the storm is so big that doesn’t manage to push this boat faster than the wave, there’s no closed stern that could protect us

WRONG: you are dreaming. I have lost all respect for you as a sailor.
Goodbye.
One more question? How much did you spend for this project?
We'll make a video about this sooner or later so stay tuned :) but by doing a lot of the work ourselves, we were able to keep the costs down
Omg... your husband is like mine... probably just washes the epoxy off his hands with acetone when he's done. 😆I don't know about those guys! ;). This is a great project. Thanks for sharing!
Haha yes exactly, I’m forever moaning at him to wear gloves and a mask 🤦♀️😬 thanks for watching and nice to hear from you :)
Wow!
Thanks 🤩
Family boat? Race surf board with a tent.
hahaha kinda... check out our interior tour, maybe you'll change your mind ;)
