  • In this episode we will explore three different Katana frames by Powerslide. I want to talk about how they react, what the main differences are, and what I do and don't like about them.

    I moved from my 100mm Wizard setup to my 76/80/80/76mm rockered FR1's, just for a change, and wow what a difference, took me a little while to adjust ha..

    Fantastic video -- IMO your best video yet! Super informative and some showing off some super smooth skate moves. I was also shopping for a trinity 4x80 frame a few weeks ago (switching from the 3x90 Katana that were stock with my Taus). I just couldn't get used to the three-wheel rocker -- it just didn't feel as smooth and it was frustrating to always be either forward or back -- it didn't feel natural.
    I wound up buying a flat 4x80 trinity frame (Nexus?) and going with a 76/80/80/76 setup and buying an extra set of 80mm wheels in case I want to go flat -- maybe less frustrating than messing with the eccentric axles. The frame was much cheaper too.

      Also I suspect that the 4x80 Katana Rockered are probably discontinued as well -- Inline Warehouse had these listed on their site as out of stock until a few weeks ago, but now they aren't even listed there at all.

    The 3x100 Katana frame that you are reviewing in this video comes a different size. Since it came from your Helios, it is 215mm. But the 3x100 Katana frame also comes in 231mm, which is much more stable and feels closer to the 4x80 size.

  • @kchappelle
    @kchappelle 5 лет назад +1

    Okay here’s the deal as to the unavailability of the 4x80 frame. I see the 2019 evo skate comes with a frame marked as NEXUS. The 2018 skate had a KATANA frame. You got the last of the Katana frames. The Nexus frames are available in all sizes.
    I don’t know what the difference is between the two. Maybe the supplier.
    Price? Quality?
    I’m going to look into a 4X80

    I use threadlock on my screws and sometimes it seeps out onto the axle and gets the axle stuck. What I do is undo the screw about 90% out and while keeping the allen wrench in the screw, tap it with the palm of my hand or use a small hammer if it is really stuck. Once the axle gets loose, then I undo the screw completely and life is good again.

    It seems that the rockered frame only provides benefit when the wheels are completely new? In other words the wheels on the rockered and non-rockered frames will look completely the same over time since what dictates the maintenance of the rocker is the relative rate that the front, middle, and back wheels wear down. Since the rate of wear between the wheels doesn't seem to be changing between the rockered and non-rockered frames eventually they will which reach some equilibrium and look identical. Please correct me if I am wrong.

    I'm surprised you're using full radius 80mm wheels for the kind of skating you do here. My experience doing similar moves proved bullet profile is more appropriate and much closer to ice skating. Maybe it would be a good subject for a future video - bullet vs full radius wheels. Put 4 new bullet radius wheels on left skate and 4 new wheels full radius on the right skate and go for spin. Wheels should be same hardness 80mm, from the same manufacturer, even the same color if possible. Excellent video by the way!

    Great info here, Dude. I'm considering a set of 4x80 frames for my Reign Kronos which currently sit on the 215mm 3x100 frame. It's unacceptable not to be given the correct info with a set of skates costing £500-600; this is just sub-standard customer service. The axel issue sounds like enough to put me off these even if they were available; I'm not sure rockering is a feature I'd necessarily use anyway, but the 4x80 on a Trinity frame certainly appeals. Will need to decide whether shop around and see what is still available, or put that cash to a set of Adapts. Thanks for sharing.

      @DeezSkates  4 года назад +1

      Rich Hayter Skater
      To be fair, my statement that “Powerslide is one of the worst offenders” when it comes to not giving enough info is not really true. I’ve since noticed that basically ever major manufacturer is guilty of this.. but that doesn’t make it better. Just means I should not single Powerslide out like that. They replaced the Katana with the Nexus frames, which as I understand are not rockered in 4x80. So that is probably a good option to look into if you’re not concerned about the rocker and want a solid trinity 4x80. I think the Aussie Inline Skater has the Nexus 4x80 on his Kronos Skates and he loves them.

    • @RichHayterSkater
      @RichHayterSkater 4 года назад +1

      You’re right, I’ve heard about people having issues with other skate brands also, but PS aren’t too forthcoming. I can’t shift one of my trinity frames because the rear bolt has been torqued to death and I’ve stripped the bolt trying to remove it; the response from PS was: drill it out but don’t break it. Didn’t even offer so much as a bolt?! Regardless, I still like their gear. Yeah, Aussie prefers the Nexus 4x80 to the triskate, I’m gonna see if I can find it.

    • @DeezSkates
      @DeezSkates  4 года назад +1

    Are you able to skate on a circle with a flat triskate setup? I tried a rockered 4 wheel setup 2 weeks ago and have been practicing skating on a circle. With a rocker it feels natural. With my triskates it feels like the skates are fighting against me, and I can't really do it.

    • @DeezSkates
      @DeezSkates  4 года назад

      I can do it. However, it takes a lot more pushing power and work from the hips and knees. The flatter your setup, the more physics demands from your form.

    • @CrimsonStrider
      @CrimsonStrider 4 года назад

      @@DeezSkates Sorry, I just realized my mistake. I can do a 2 foot glide with no issue. It's a 1 foot glide I was talking about. Do you encounter issues with a 1 foot outside edge glide as well? The skate wants to go straight, and off the top of my head, when I do sorta of skate a smaller circle, it requires lifting my toe a little. So it's not a smooth 1 foot glide, and I can't balance for as long before putting my other foot down.
