    Also Norton was offered the role of Ryan in Saving Private Ryan but turned it down because he was gonna do Fight Club. So Matt Damon took the Ryan role. Weird.

      I believe also Spielberg wanted Damon anyway. There was a point though where Spielberg thought he would be perfect in Saving Private Ryan due to seeing Courage Under Fire where Matt Damon was a skinny heroin addict, yet him being as skinny as he was Spielberg couldn’t cast him. But once the two met and Damon had his weight back, he was able to be cast as Private Ryan.

    You could spend a lifetime just watching the movies of the mid-Late 90’s. Such an unbelievably rich time for talent and quality scripts.

    • @stevemike2973

      So many of the movies made after the civil rights movement and on 70's, 80's, 90's up until the internet become huge around 1999, could not be made today, period. Not because of right of left wing politics, just due to the fact that in those days you could make a movie about anything, and nowadays you can't.

    • @WhiskeySam1
      @WhiskeySam1 3 года назад +1

      @@stevemike2973 left wing politics plays itself out in casting decisions generally, award season, and also the collapse of comedy as a genre. But I think it’s less about politics than the 90’s being a special time: strong scripts, strong directors, great talent, and BEFORE the Internet made piracy so costly to studios. That’s a big reason why we’re bombarded with big budget CGI nonsense now: it’s the only reliable money maker. Studios won’t gamble.

    • @jon8004
      @jon8004 2 месяца назад

      @@WhiskeySam1 Politics definitely didn't kill comedy. Theatrical comedy died because it's most dialogue based, which television manages easily, and once television started making good comedy, people didn't feel the need to go to a theater to see it (even though watching a good comedy with an audience is a very different [and superior] experience to watching it at home).

    Francis and Lucas and Spielberg were all about going off and doing something you're real passionate about. Breaking the rules. Making something new. So it's definitely like Francis to suggest he go do something like American History X. And what a great decision. It really shows you how forward thinking Francis is.

      Yes, all "new school" directors who cut their teeth doing things that were outside the mainstream. We look back now at Godfather as a classic, but at the time a "mobster movie" was 30 years out of style and he had to fight to get Pacino cast. Meanwhile, Star Wars echoed old radio dramas from an even earlier time, and occult horror was in vogue... not a big shark movie. And yet, here we are!

      Yes. I mean he got there in the end, but I can't figure out if he has a neurodegenerative disorder. Honestly, it kind of looks like it did with Michael J Fox back when his parkinsons was starting up. Either that, or Norton is just really amped up and intense all the time. He seemed like he was all over the place verbally, while sitting on his leg and tapping his fingers and looking around.
