    Nice work! They'll be firm. I put 9s and 4.5s on mine (the local place's advice) and yeah it was a scalpel but just too hard to DD. 6s on the front balanced it out with 17s, Michelin Pilot Sports and Federal 595s. I kept the front 9s and got rear 6s for future track work.

      @@CarThought that makes sense I forgot you don't daily drive the mx5, so track focussed tyres would be sensible. I would love to track the car one day but I'm a bit put off by the up front costs of new brakes + rotors, half the life of my tyres, and additional insurance etc... if you don't mind answering, how much would you say it costs in total for a track day between the cost of consumables on the car and insurance/cost of the track day?

    Great video! I’m about to fit ClubRace to my NC so it’s handy to see how you did it.
    What ride height did you go for in the end? 330/340mm? Mines 90% track use and only driven on the road to get to circuits so wondering how low is reasonable.

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  2 года назад +1

      Think I did 340mm front, 340mm rear overall or very close to! Blink motorsport set the car up not long after this video and they raised the front to match the rear. I think the rear was maxed out at 340mm, wouldn’t go any higher from memory!

    im getting my bilsteins replaced too on my NC with Tein coilovers. my car has knocking noises coming from almost every corner now , the bilsteins have just had it.. good time to replace them and lower the car at the same time. i'll be paying someone to install them though, i dont have the time to do this myself, and im sure I'd break something too haha
    in New Zealand i need to get an official certification to have coilovers though, which costs about 350 pounds. coilovers arent permitted here without this.

    Hi, can I ask did you have the car on axle stands when you raised the suspension to torque up the bolts? I have the same dilemma, done the front coilovers and got to do the rears now

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  3 года назад

      What I did: With the car on stands. Put a trolley jack underneath the hub you’re working on and jack it up until the car starts to lift slightly off the stand on that corner, and then torque. This simulates the weight of the car on that corner.

  • @jamesallwood8787
    @jamesallwood8787 3 года назад +1

    Would you say that these on the softest setting are ok on road? Also did you find an increase in road noise because of the spherical bearing top mounts? Trying to decide between these and the CRDs

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  3 года назад +3

      Way comfier than standard dampers for me on the softest setting. My next video I have a POV drive with them on soft, so you’ll be able to see how harsh they are. There is a crossover between the CRD’s and Clubrace in damping rates, so a CRD on the harshest setting will crossover with a Clubrace on a softer setting.
      No on the road noise, improvement all round, but my stock bilsteins were 14 years old so they weren’t exactly in tip top condition. Hope this helps?
      If you aren’t sure I’d recommend emailing Jerrick at Meister R, they are very helpful

    • @jamesallwood8787
      @jamesallwood8787 3 года назад

      Ah that’s great thanks. I wanted to get them but didn’t want to regret it if it was going to be too noisy and crashy. They will be for road and track with semi slick tyres. That has made my mind up, I will be buying them! Cheers

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  2 года назад +1

      I would say it depends on your commute/strength of your spine. Fully soft they’re fine for most roads. Probably better than stock. But if it’s mainly a road car, you’d be better off with the CRDs. The softest setting on the clubrace is the same as the hardest setting on the CRDs ✌️

    Is this the lowest setting ride height wise? If not, how much extra did you have to go lower? I’ve got an NA but i’m sure they’re similar coilovers

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  2 года назад

      It wasn’t the lowest setting on the fronts no, but can’t have been far off. The rears were as low as they could go. The car was raised slightly on the front end by BBR when it had the race alignment to get rid of the rake. I think you’d struggle with getting over literally anything if you went much lower on the front, it would be almost un-drivable. I know I had to plan routes and if there was an unexpected speed bump.. you’d have to turn round 😂

  • @hirdy161
    @hirdy161 3 года назад

    I would love to do this on my NC. Have you had problems with the ride height ie potholes or speed bumps?

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  3 года назад +1

      None whatsoever. Ride height is totally adjustable, with quite a bit of room to lift the front if you wish. That’s one of the benefits of the coilovers over a lowering spring, the adjustability.

    Was the rust in the rear arches, the sill end panels by any chance? I mentioned this about 6 months ago, it's the first place you need to look on a MX5 NC. Hope it's not too serious.

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  3 года назад

      Indeed, think it’s because I stored it outside for 18 months so it made it worse

    • @davidstorm4015
      @davidstorm4015 3 года назад

      @@CarThought It's caused by two things, the fact that they don't rust-proof it from factory, it's just a thin coat of paint, also the fabric liners in the inner arch that suppress noise, these hold water and cause rust to start. If it's not too far gone, I would hammerite it (3 coats), then spray it with underbody protection and let it dry thoroughly before re-installing the liners. Can't understand why they fit the fabric liners, plastic would be better. Mines a 2010, managed to catch it with only light surface rust, no problem. My previous one was a 2006 and it was rusted through on both sides, despite being a very low mileage car.

      @@CarThought the cat's been tracked many times on Koni & BBR springs, very quick as it does bang out circa 270 bhp but find current set up crashy on road, DFV should resolve this whilst keeping crashiness down. Also running RB ARBs tight. Your geo is key to yhe ultimate feel and handling of the car. A raw post fit drive with no geo set up does no justice to how your car will feel, handle, grip.
      Once this has been done a video will have significant worth, raw isn't a great model.

      @CarThought  3 года назад +2

      How so? Ohlins re-use the top mount on the DFV’s.. which is for TUV approval, but ultimately reduces the quality of the coilover.
      Also a sweeping statement like that is nonsense without discussing applications. What sort of driving do you do? What tyre have you got fitted?
      Both set ups use a dual perch design, Ohlins DFV run:
      7kg/mm front springs.
      4kg/mm rear springs.
      MeisterR run:
      10 kg/mm + Helper Springs front.
      6 kg/mm + Helper Springs rear.
      So in spring rate alone, the MeisterR is superior for track driving on a sticky tyre. How are the Ohlins superior?
