- Luminosity masks are a fantastic way to start creating top quality, clean images. They allow you not just to blend exposures much more cleanly than HDR software, but also to take control over your entire workflow.
This beginner's tutorial will show you the basics of exposure blending, how to layer in Photoshop and which exposures to use in blending. You will also see the Easy Panel used in creating ideal 16 bit masks.

I am a 100% self taught photographer and I have found my 10+ year journey to be a series of 'lightbulb moments' but these lightbulbs only turn on when I'm ready for them. I have visited this topic, and this particular video, in the past but put it all in the too hard basket. Lately I have found myself wanting to revisit luminosity masking but I was still struggling... until today. After watching this again, the 'lightbulb' has turned on big time and it all makes perfect sense. I am now excited for the next part of my photographic journey and I would like to say a HUGE thankyou for sharing your knowledge.

I consider myself a pretty experienced Photoshopper, using it since ver 4 way back in ... sometime ... But here I am - with my jaw hanging down, brought back to school.
I've learned a ton from you on Luminosity Masking and put some of it to effect the hard way = Channels and Levels. It would not have been if I hadn't watched your videos, I can tell you that. I may or may not jump the Raya Pro but Easy Panel will definitely go to begin with. Going to make that workflow soooo much smoother. I can't thank you enough for your tutorials and please try to find motivation to continue them.

I've today subscribed to your channel and it's fantastic. I'm quite new to photoshop and it's really exciting to see what can be done with this software. I have to agree with Jimmy about getting lost if you haven’t played with masks n layers for a bit in photoshop. I was one that got totally lost when 1st trying to follow or understand Jimmy, thinking this was all to hard & a little disheartened. Once you play with basic layer masks in PS for a while Jimmys layermask panel / workflow WILL fall into place.

I do quite a bit of night time city scapes and your last example makes it clear how to improve images there. Hi Jimmy. I like this tutorial - thanks. I have been thinking about the question you pose at around 14'25" relating to the ability within PS to make multiple passes of the brush to reinforce the effect of brushing in the selection. In my experience, this is related to relative "strength" of the selection made from the luminosity masks. In other words, if is use an LM where there is a sunset, with lots of highlights in the sky but also a good deal of darkening sky, and very heavy shadows in the foreground for instance, I find I can quickly recover the highlights with one pass of the brush and further passes don't have any impact, but that the darker sky will continue to be affected with multiple passes irrespective of the flow setting on my brush. I think of this almost like the LM's degrees of greyness being the driver of this behaviour - where my LM starts off the most white (in the channels panel rather than in the normal layer mask - this is the key), the brush has an instant effect, but as the degree of greyness (in the mask) increases across the sky, more brush strokes are needed as the pixels are covered by grey. It's like the LM is a neutral density filter. As the grey on the mask darkens, it becomes harder and harder for me to brush away the mask with my white brush but I will still be able to do it for any selection that is anything other than black on the LM (in the channels panel) as when the selection is loaded into the layer, only those pixels which are 100% black in the original LM will be the ones in the selection. This hypothesis is supported by your tip in the tutorial to pick a mask that is going to do a good job of grading the transitions - these are the masks with the greatest control, but some care is still needed and in some cases, with an LM that was a bit less contrasty to start with, there may be a need for some careful brush work after the selection has been deactivated. LMs are fantastic, and this tutorial is one of the best - thanks for your work.

Amazing tutorial. @ 15:10 you mention the black edging around the trees & said that it's easy to fix, but you'll keep it for another tutorial. Do you already have a tutorial like that or can you point me in the right direction to fix those issues? Really learned a lot from your tutorials. Keep it up!
Great video Jimmy. I've been using Easy Panel for a while and this video explains it really well. Just one question though - what would you say is about the maximum difference in exposure you can have between your two starting images before you start getting unrealistic effects in the final image?
There's no set formula, as long as your base exposure level is correct (not too over or under exposed) then for your brighter and darker exposures you should have to go any further that 1.5 stops.

Fantastic tutorials but I just can't make it work. I'm completely new to PS (using mostly Lightroom) and even newer to HDR and exposure blending. After watching your tutorials for some months I used the summer discount to get a hold on Raya Pro and challenge myself to blend some of my shots. Sadly I'm still rather confused about what does each button, and even with the tutorials opened I can't make it look nice and natural like you do... Back to practice I guess!

For the better news, I actually pushed through for another hour and managed to make what I wanted (some sliders confused me earlier and I was unable to get a nice result). There is still room for improvement, but it is definitely a huge step forward. Cheers !

at 14:15 you said, that you are not sure, why it is possible to reenforce the selection by multiple times of painting over. Isn't that just the case because the selection is like 60% in that region. So even a brush with 100% opacity&flow is just applied with 60% strength (based on the selection 'strength' locally) and thus it leads to a 60% grey on your mask? and if you paint over a second time, you just add a bit again? (opacity is 100% so it keeps adding the color of your brush until you hit 100% black)

If we got a bracketing of the scene I see the advantage of using the luminosity mask applied to one of the exposures with the base exposure in the bottom. However, many times we have one exposure and some tutorials generates the different exposures based on copies adjusted with curves. In such cases, is there any difference if I just apply the masks of luminosity to a series of curves and test each one adjust better the photo? Usually, I create 6 curves with different luminosity masks levels and looking at the curves PS adjust the curve showing the levels only for the pixels after applied the mask indicating the luminosity level region that curve would adjust.

Jimmy, I have to say that after watching a few videos I am completely lost with all your explanations! I feel that I am back at school in a Mathematics class. Your software looks absolutely amazing but because you explain what to do AND what not to do, AND all the different panels - free panels, beginners panels, intermediate, etc... , I just don't know how I can simply blend photos together. I thought the goal was to easily blend 2 or 3 exposures with a click of a button but this whole Raya Pro is becoming a very complex equation. It really is a shame because there must other people in my situation who want to buy your product but don't act because it's wayyyy to complex now. With Raya Pro can very easily blend 2 or 3 photos together? How? Thank you.

When you say you have two - three different exposures, can you please clarifie if you mean they are bracketed, or adjusted manualy over and under in photoshop/Lightroom.

Most of the time it will be bracketing. Doing this manually can introduce movement between shots. I know for the last shots I did (Moonrise) even a 4 second gap made for alignment issues.

I see the first time you create the masks (you choose mask 6), is from the brighter "layer 0", (minute 10:30), but the two last ones you create them ( you chosse mask 1 and mask 2), you do it from the darker "layer 1".... (minute 12:44 and 13:50). Why?
Using different masks gives us different selections to control. Sometimes you might want to make a small adjustment which is what mask 6 will give you.

Should I start with The Art of Photography, The Art of Digital Blending, or Exposure Blend Like an Expert? Looking at the names, I would suggest Exposure Blend Like an expert comes after The Art of Digital Blending, or am I wrong? I understand the basics of Photoshop and Luminosity Masks.

Thanks for your message. This depends entirely on your current ability in Photoshop. If you're new to PS, I recommend going through the beginner's PS course a few times. Then I would progress to Exposure Blend Like An Expert, watching and practicing the techniques in there for a while until you are comfortable. I would then move onto The Art of Photography, which is a bit more advanced in terms of post-processing. Finally, I would watch either of the two other courses, The Art of Cityscapes and the Art of Digital Blending, once I felt comfortable with everything I had learned.

I have purchase your Raya pro years back, but hasn't used it..at present learning about the Photoshop..was always a lightroom user...would really like to know ur views on lightroom capabilities especially with merging of raw exposure and giving more control over the dynamic range in the picture combined with Range mask for Luminance & Color for radial filter, brush etc. as compared to Luminosity mask, I may sound naive..but correct if I am wrong..can we do the same merging of exposures in lightroom with raw files and achieve same end results or there will be some limitations.

Jimmy sometimes my pictures end up a bit mirky grey and washed out after I edit using luminosity masks? Any recommendations of what I can adjust to restore? I’ve tried bumping up the contrast but it looks unnatural

When I try to create the mask folder I get the error The command "Apply Image" is not currently available.
You probably need to change a small setting in Photoshop. Try point 6 in this support page: www.shutterevolve.com/instamask-support-page/
