I recently got into sling shots and let me tell you I went down a rabbit hole learning about rubber/latex. It's still an effing mystery to me though. So many variables involved with fine tuning the rubber thickness, length, taper, and size and weight of the projectile in order to achieve the best results. Some set ups are better for power where others are better for speed (again an effing mystery) I do know that less is more as it'll actually slow itself down if there is too much rubber. Temperature is a big factor as well. I would def save it for a warmer day but not blazing hot. Like 75° F and partly cloudy would be ideal for optimal performance. Brand new rubber is also more prone to ripping if you just max it right out the gate. It needs to be "broken in" to increase longevity. Sharp edges and corners are no no. Look at some sling shot designs to get a better idea of how to secure it without weakening it. I think the ring needs to be much larger as well. The rubber doesn't have enough room to move before it starts loosing power trying to force itself through such a small hole. I really hope y'all get it working right! Talk to some slingshot pros that make their own band set ups. I guarantee they'll have some valuable insights that can help achieve your goal!
The cup is doing so well not only because of the tension in the rubber, but also because of the concealed air in the cup. the deformation is compressing the air inside the cup what generates additional energy into the bounce
oh man that hulk fist on golf balls clip had me crying with laughter.... just the build-up knowing something bad was aboutta happen and the boys' reaction afterwards ahahahaha
If you guys were to try this again, Might I suggest a few things to try next time that might increase your chances of success? - Increase the height of both the base frame and the tension frame by a factor of 1.5. Seeing as the main fail point was the ball bottoming out on the frame, increasing that distance should work a treat. - Like Gaunson said, maximize protection around anywhere the rubber makes contact with the frame. Ideally, you won't want the rubber to be the thing making direct contact with the frame. You want something else inbetween on both sides as a buffer. Anything that takes the edge off should do the trick. - Make the base frame, bolt clamp, and rubber cut-outs circles just like the tension frame. The straight edge corners are a focal point for stress buildup, and round edges allow for stress to disperse easier without damage.
5:13 "this is just us havin a crack" this is why i love this channel tbh. you guys are just passionate about this, because you're just having a good time. keep it up ya mad lads!
The tower!!! Going back to our ROOTS! All about it, I really missed them. Never thought watching various objects fall from the same tower for hours on end would bring me nostalgia, but here we are.
That was actually Derek. But he did the exact same thing in the very first video that introduced the winch. The atlas stone vs bulletproof glass. We got the song and everything.
In the tin can/marble experiment at the beginning if the can was sealed at the bottom then the air would also compressed giving bounce. There would be a difference between the can and an open frame.
I think you would get better results if you stretched the rubber over a sealed enclosed structure. That way you get the tautness of the rubber + air pressure
Imma be honest, the second I saw the metal bars in a cone shape I knew it would cause the rubber to break when the ball pushed the rubber into the metal bars. Critical oversight, but hey that's how science learns and adapts!
I heard that. When asked what he wanted for Christmas he replied, 'I don't want anything, I just want world peace'. Well spoken Sir, you have my respect. More people need to think and act like that.
That opening failure was epic. I wonder how many others were glued to their screen mouth open, anticipating what was going to happen and then this! Our faces were undoubtedly hung in suspended animation.
To quote Mythbusters, "Failure is always an option". And that's fine, it's part of the journey. And it's good that you've taken us on that journey. The life of a RUclips Channel is not all glitz and glamour and sweet success.
So, has anyone mentioned the difference between this rig, and a jar yet? The air in the jar is doing a lot to help the bounce… they have left out the element of compressed air in this experiment.
0:10 ten seconds in and you know its not going to happen because if the energy used = energy reclaimed, then we can all throw the physics books in the bin
My brother loves this channel and yesterday was his birthday.. it would be cool if everyone liked this so he could see it when he watches this video later.. Happy Birthday Justin!
The balloon-over-jar small bouncer also had the advantage of air pressure rebound. It's not a big factor at the small scale, but might make a diff for this. Good luck making the base airtight if you wan to add that factor.
Your also failing to consider the idea was using a sealed glass. This would cause a pressured vessel when object dropped increasing the acceleration back up
1:45 and 17:10 have been some great pause to laugh highlights for me. 28:10 for another great highlight. Just a great vid all around from some lovely lads.
So, I somehow expected the initial failure... but thank you for including those. It makes the persistence and victory much better! Thank you guys for what you do. Merry Christmas!
One of my favorite vids in a long time. Love seeing the process. That not everything works the way you want it to. That it takes lots of tries to get the cool shots you do. Welcome back
nothing in this world can better describe "my last 2 braincells" than Gaunson: "its beginning to look alot like christmas" followed by Herron: "i found 50cents on the ground"
Loved this probably one of my favorites in a while. I really missed the tower and yall just being dudes. Ik the algorithm wants explosions and things being ripped apart and only that. But just watching yall be dudes and just hanging out between drops is what i really like about ur channel. I hope that yall get to to more tower stuff. Love yall and God bless
Yep, it's all in conservation of energy. People have mentioned that the cup model had an added benefit of containing the air, so it used air pressure to effectively contribute to the tension of the trampoline. 25:17 When the test ball bounces here, you can hear the rattling of the mechanism, which is an overall inefficiency. That noise is wasted energy, but it's not something you can really do much about. Afterwards, however, you can see the trampoline continue to reverberate. That's the real issue. Ideally, you want the rubber to stretch, absorbing 100% of the ball's drop KE. Then it should contract back to exactly its stable position. When the rubber flings itself slightly upwards, past its starting position, that's KE it stole from the ball. The moving rubber has momentum, which requires energy that has to come from the ball, it being the only source. The thinner rubber, even with more movement, has less mass. It's can't steal as much energy.
Visiting the tower was a fun highlight of my trip to Australia! Dad had to work down there for 3 weeks, so my mom and I, plus my mom's dad, took a month-long vacation there, and that was one of the places we visited. And, I got to do the water balloon drop from the tower was fun! The ChatGPT is hilarious for the suggestions it gave you!
We're back to the tower again!!! Whoohoo!!! Classic _How Ridiculous!_ Couldn't ask for a better Christmas present than _How Ridiculous_ returning to the tower!
When they posted the poll on Instagram I thought they were just asking about past videos. When I saw it was new I was FLOORED. What a way to send out HR for the year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, fellas!
Regarding Gaunson and Herron's conversation about gifts from Grannie: every year, I get the ugliest shirts/sweaters for my grandkids on purpose, and insist they try it on and pose for a photo! 😂 Makes for good blackmail material (and good memories, especially once they figure out Nanna's been having a laugh) 🤣❤️
After the first 10 min of this vid I just got reminded of how many tries Stanford had to make at the Dam. Great Patience and Determination here Gentlemen. 😃

Alright 👍
❤
Would it work any better if it was a closed vessel like the cup is with the marble
true tbh
*Bros, get a ballistics shield like the Mythbusters when risking projectiles heading your way*
Yeeessss I missed the tower videos honestly. Its always great to watch men throw things from high places

This! I bet if they stretched the stuff over an oil drum, it would work much better
WE GOTTA BOOST THIS COMMENT
this and i think they need to make it bigger and give it more tension, also make the frame holding the rubber circular
Boost!
not to mention all the energy lost into the ground.
oh man that hulk fist on golf balls clip had me crying with laughter.... just the build-up knowing something bad was aboutta happen and the boys' reaction afterwards ahahahaha
BUT DID ANY GOLF BALLS FLATTEN!!?
15:22 The Dumb Things montage was the Christmas gift of this video.
The hulk fist vs golf balls was very funny to watch back after 4 years haha
@@howridiculous It was also sooo gnarly haha. Was there not a slowmo?
