The cup is doing so well not only because of the tension in the rubber, but also because of the concealed air in the cup. the deformation is compressing the air inside the cup what generates additional energy into the bounce
When y'all where talking about getting a shirt for Christmas it was funny cuz I got one of your shirts for Christmas and I had a real smile on my face😂😂
Physics wise, wouldn’t they have better bounces if they supported the tensioner better? Either all four corners instead of the center point, or change the design to pull the rubber edges down instead of lifting the center up
He sounds almost like corpse husband (maybe you know him) and he says it's partially caused by a certain medical condition, I wonder if Jack also has it or if his voice is just naturally this deep.

I recently got into sling shots and let me tell you I went down a rabbit hole learning about rubber/latex. It's still an effing mystery to me though. So many variables involved with fine tuning the rubber thickness, length, taper, and size and weight of the projectile in order to achieve the best results. Some set ups are better for power where others are better for speed (again an effing mystery) I do know that less is more as it'll actually slow itself down if there is too much rubber. Temperature is a big factor as well. I would def save it for a warmer day but not blazing hot. Like 75° F and partly cloudy would be ideal for optimal performance. Brand new rubber is also more prone to ripping if you just max it right out the gate. It needs to be "broken in" to increase longevity. Sharp edges and corners are no no. Look at some sling shot designs to get a better idea of how to secure it without weakening it. I think the ring needs to be much larger as well. The rubber doesn't have enough room to move before it starts loosing power trying to force itself through such a small hole. I really hope y'all get it working right! Talk to some slingshot pros that make their own band set ups. I guarantee they'll have some valuable insights that can help achieve your goal!

I just want to thank you guys! The kids and I have been watching your channel for about 4 years. Over the past year my ex surprised me, after 13 years together, with a text message saying she was leaving while I was at work, so she took my kids and now I only get to see them on some weekends. Then one of my brothers died when a car pulled out in front of him when he was on his motorcycle, I was working on campers for Camping World then they surprised us by closing the doors at our location, a few months later my father passed. Watching your videos has helped me get through a lot of things. We live in Askov MN and it's -6° this morning. I've been feeling like the worst dad in the world because all I do is work and I'm always in a lot of pain in my back (had surgery on it 11 years ago), now I'm about to be 47 and I have to walk with a cane but have to work because it's the only way to survive. Thank you guys for being a sort of light in my very dark world. I'll continue watching and praying my life gets better, thanks for everything you guys do.
If you guys were to try this again, Might I suggest a few things to try next time that might increase your chances of success? - Increase the height of both the base frame and the tension frame by a factor of 1.5. Seeing as the main fail point was the ball bottoming out on the frame, increasing that distance should work a treat. - Like Gaunson said, maximize protection around anywhere the rubber makes contact with the frame. Ideally, you won't want the rubber to be the thing making direct contact with the frame. You want something else inbetween on both sides as a buffer. Anything that takes the edge off should do the trick. - Make the base frame, bolt clamp, and rubber cut-outs circles just like the tension frame. The straight edge corners are a focal point for stress buildup, and round edges allow for stress to disperse easier without damage. Edit: The people who have responded sp far are also really smart. Listen to them too, lol
I would say, adding some oil to the underside of the rubber to remove the friction from the metal frame so the round rubber part in the middle is as stretched out as the side skirts
@@guywy8310Add some oil to the top surface too, it’ll reduce the friction between the ball and the rubber and allow for greater tension in the area directly in contact with the ball
Yeah I was thinking radiused and polished edges and larger surface area and height for the frame and the center rig and larger sheets of rubber and latex. Make several replacement radiused/polished clamping bars for bad drops.
The circular and square mix really was the failing point here. As you said, there are specific points where the tension is WAY higher than other spots due to the distance between the outer square edge and the inner round one. From the corner to the ring it's like 3x the distance as from the middle of the straight to the ring. The tension in the short distance will be so high and the tension towards the corner will literally be 1:3 of that. Not only does that put stress in some areas that WILL cause failure, but you also lose out on so much rebound because the corners kinda do nothing.. The trampoline would be about 30% more bouncy if they got even tension around the whole thing. There's a reason you don't mix squares and circles much in engineering. Many reasons actually. Every surface must be as smooth as polished glass as well, because abrasive surfaces will make tiny tears in the rubber which will be failure points. You can't use an angle grinder to get the surface smootnhess you need here. You're gonna have to go in with a sander and some fine paper and a lot of elbow grease, the surface must be SMOOTH. If you cut a tiny little nick in a rubber band and pull it, it will rip immediately with almost zero force. Also, the bolt holes are a massive weak point. That CAN be solved by looking into the world of drums. Here's how: Look up how a bass drum hoop works. Do the same, but make the hoop press against a totally flat surface with the rubber between the surface and the hoop. Just in short: Weld nuts all around the outer rim of the bottom frame. Get wing nuts with a clamp that reaches around the TOP SIDE of the hoop on top, then tighten those things up evenly around the ring (don't just pin one down and go to the next screw, screw them all in so the ring presses down evenly around the whole thing by going across, as in first bolt you screw in a fair bit of the way at 12 o clock on the circle, next screw is 6 o clock, then 9, then 3, then you just keep on going around in a crossing pattern, just like you would if you were swapping a tire, you don't just pin one bolt and go to the next, you tighten them gradually to make sure the wheel isn't on all crooked). Just watch a youtube video of someone swapping a bass drum head, you'll see how it works. You just need for the ring and the frame to be the same size, not overlapping like on a drum where the drum head itself has its own metal ring. You specifically want to pay attention to the tightener wing nuts and how they're clamped onto the hoop and screwed into the side of the drum. You want to replicate this. I'll give you an 80% chance of success if you go with this method. As to the mention of using oil, be specific about the oil you choose, because certain oils eat rubber. Ask your hardware store guy for a lubricant that doesn't deteriorate rubber. Silicon lubricants are probably your best bet here, but I'm no chemist so ask someone who knows. You CAN do this, but you will never reach 1:1, that's physically impossible. I expect it would be hard to get above 90% rebound.. Also, bowling balls are not your friend here. Especially old gnarly ones with cracks and divots. Any rough surface is going to be a problem.
16:10 was exactly what I thought of!! So happy you said it too!! 😂😂😂 That and Scott "losing all the air in his lungs laugh" are my favorite Scott moments of all time!

That was actually Derek. But he did the exact same thing in the very first video that introduced the winch. The atlas stone vs bulletproof glass. We got the song and everything.
Im no scientist, but the example you gave with the jar and the balloon, MAYBE one of the factors is the compression of air inside the jar as well.... air compression acts as a spring the same as the rubber balloon. I dunno, just a thought
Not to take the fun away from the dropper but you need a dropping mechanical machine so you can calculate, recalculate, and adjust the exact dropping position rather than human hands holding the ball out and eyeballing it every time.
The tower!!! Going back to our ROOTS! All about it, I really missed them. Never thought watching various objects fall from the same tower for hours on end would bring me nostalgia, but here we are.
Oh man, the hulk fist on golf balls footage had me weeping with amusement.... just the build-up knowing something horrible was about to happen and the boys' response afterwards
I think you would get better results if you stretched the rubber over a sealed enclosed structure. That way you get the tautness of the rubber + air pressure
Impressive. That was close to 100 percent reflection of energy. About as close as one could possibly get with a setup like that. Y'all definitely had that rubber well dialed in.🤘
Imma be honest, the second I saw the metal bars in a cone shape I knew it would cause the rubber to break when the ball pushed the rubber into the metal bars. Critical oversight, but hey that's how science learns and adapts!
That opening failure was epic. I wonder how many others were glued to their screen mouth open, anticipating what was going to happen and then this! Our faces were undoubtedly hung in suspended animation.
Yay!! So pleased to see you guys back at the tower!! These are the best videos!! 👏🏻🙏🏻

Finally back at the Tower. Thats the "How Ridiculous" i love! And a suggestion for the frame. If you would use rounded tubes it should not be that bad for the rubber. Maybe even use a circle on the bottom instead of the cross you had down there. A rubber mat on top of the cross as a protection could have saved the rubber as well.
i love the new double camera angles on the drops! Definitely helps my adhd personally seeing both the drop / reaction. I feel like yall have put more footage this way & "waste" less time flashing back & forth to the action. Absolutely love what yall do at the tower & all yalls videos, much love from east Tennessee!
2 factors you all seem to be forgetting about (1) the compression of the dead space underneath. (2) how much strength is lost each time you stretch it.🎉
Love the science and experimentation you guys have done this episode. The challenge of getting the high bounce is very entertaining. The force gauge was the icing on the cake. Great episode!!!
Ha, speaking of It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas: What's y'all's summer version of that? Im no scientist, but the example you gave with the jar and the balloon, MAYBE one of the factors is the compression of air inside the jar as well.... air compression acts as a spring the same as the rubber balloon. I dunno, just a thought
Big factor lol. Also even tension, not having a clamping surface with corners
Not to take the fun away from the dropper but you need a dropping mechanical machine so you can calculate, recalculate, and adjust the exact dropping position rather than human hands holding the ball out and eyeballing it every time.
2:20 "Well, that's it guys. Thanks for liking, commenting and subscribing. See you next week!"😂😂😂
"Desktop power supply. Wait, no, it's secret Santa, I don't know what i'm getting" -Editor Jack, 2024 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The tower!!! Going back to our ROOTS! All about it, I really missed them. Never thought watching various objects fall from the same tower for hours on end would bring me nostalgia, but here we are.
I like how much yall have incorporated the engineering behind the magic more rather recently🙏
Happy Birthday Gaunson! 🎉🎉🎉
Can you guys shoot two bowling balls attached with a cable out of two different cannons to make a super powerful bolo?
Oh man, the hulk fist on golf balls footage had me weeping with amusement.... just the build-up knowing something horrible was about to happen and the boys' response afterwards
Agree 😂
Did you just copy and paste @liambushrod comment? You both said almost the exact same thing
Bot
I think you would get better results if you stretched the rubber over a sealed enclosed structure. That way you get the tautness of the rubber + air pressure
4:12 jack’s voice still shocks me 😂😭. EXTREMELY DEEP LIKE BRUHHHH😭😭
Impressive. That was close to 100 percent reflection of energy. About as close as one could possibly get with a setup like that. Y'all definitely had that rubber well dialed in.🤘
The tower vids are my favourite!
Ditto Pickle
Imma be honest, the second I saw the metal bars in a cone shape I knew it would cause the rubber to break when the ball pushed the rubber into the metal bars.
Critical oversight, but hey that's how science learns and adapts!
You are such a liar haha
You only knew after the fact as we all did
That opening failure was epic. I wonder how many others were glued to their screen mouth open, anticipating what was going to happen and then this! Our faces were undoubtedly hung in suspended animation.
I cackled lololol
I laughed so much I cried
5:03 the "I found 50 cents on the ground" was just so perfect.
Vanguard tier bonuses look incredible! Alemio is rewarding its loyal presale participants and early adopters well!
Yay More Tower Videos Again
Just found your channel. Subbed for more!
They have a lot of good videos to choose from.
3:10 Believe me, it sucks. You guys ease the suffering for a little while, but soul crushing existence and all.
"I sharpened it myself with a diamond stone"
I love you, EJ.
“I don’t want anything, but world peace.” 😂 love it. Merry Christmas lads.
3:29 Do tell.
THE TOWERSSS BAAACCCKKKK OMGGGG!!! OG 44 CLUB IS VERY HAPPY
do it again 17:45
Do it
"One touched my back rib"
Tickled me!
Thanks for the laughs lads! You’re killing me !🤣😂
“One touched my back rib” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
25:58 I think Stanford was laughing at a certain shape 😂
They’re BACCCKKKK!!!!
So nice to see you guys back the tower!!! I've missed the classic How Ridiculous.
The shot at 31:14 is perfect, the sound mixed with facial expressions, that's cinematography right their
i love the new double camera angles on the drops! Definitely helps my adhd personally seeing both the drop / reaction. I feel like yall have put more footage this way & "waste" less time flashing back & forth to the action. Absolutely love what yall do at the tower & all yalls videos, much love from east Tennessee!
As a viewer, I appreciate the things you do for the viewers.
17:56 - "The truth is, we all do dumb things."
"I've got another one!"
Thank you for the genuine laughs!❤
2 factors you all seem to be forgetting about (1) the compression of the dead space underneath.
(2) how much strength is lost each time you stretch it.🎉
I vote a revisit on this, the Fram needs to be deeper so that you can keep the perfect tension, but also have room for it to expand the way it wants
Vintage HR viddy boys. Loose as a mother goose in the best way possible❣
Love the science and experimentation you guys have done this episode. The challenge of getting the high bounce is very entertaining. The force gauge was the icing on the cake. Great episode!!!
Can’t go wrong with a lil og hr ❤😂
Ha, speaking of It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas: What's y'all's summer version of that? What do you sing when you get to the part about the trees that goes, "the sturdy kind that doesn't mind the snow" (rhyming with "everywhere you go")? Do you replace that with "the sturdy kind that doesn't mind the GLOW"? 🌞🎄😎 😂
There is just something poetic about dropping heavy thing from high thing that make my brain go smile. Missed the tower vids!
Oooh wow. The adds drastically increased since the last time i watched you guys dropping the anvil.
You guys are still freaking awesome!!
I was halfway though saying "I'm just waiting for it to hit the frame and split the rubber" when it did exactly that on the first go 😅
So glad to see you guys back at the tower! 😊
