Back during the mid-1970' s I had a portable engine machining business. I worked in small cars to huge earth movers: reboring cylinders, sleeving cylinders, grinding crankshafts. The general public would be shocked to know how many mechanic shops are run by crooks. Getting ripped off is the rule rather than the exception. Learn how to work on your own vehicle. The money you spend in special tools to do certain repairs is still cheaper than paying a crook, plus you have the tools to do future repairs.
yep exactly why i learned to wrench on my own vehicles and to help out my family from gettin ripped off at the shops. there are honest mechanics out there but at the end of the day no one will care for your own vehicle like you will. youtube and basic tools from harbor freight and you can do most repairs yourself! incredible

My husband is one of those rare gems. He was a mechanic for over 40 years (now retired). And, he was everything you described and more. On his off-time, whenever he worked on someone’s vehicle, he would fix whatever they had asked him to fix, and then he would give the car a full exam. He checked things like fluid levels, the brakes and the flux capacitor. (LOL!!! I couldn’t resist!) He once told me that he took safety very seriously. He said he checked everything because he didn’t want to return an unsafe vehicle to the owner. He told me that he would feel personally responsible if something went wrong with the the vehicle-like the brakes failed-and the vehicle was involved in a serious accident. Oh, and by the way, he never charged extra for the “check-up”. In fact, most of the time the vehicle’s owner wasn’t even aware that my hubby had done the thorough safety check (unless something wasfound during the check up.)

German cars use to be quality, but not anymore. If you can't afford to take your bmw/audi/volkswagen to a certified mechanic, don't waste your money buying one in the first place.
