The song is about how the papal swiss guard came about. The swiss guard is still active today in protecting the pope. You have to be Swiss, male, catholic & completed military service (which is mandatory in Switzerland, however you can get easily it of it, but then you have to pay more taxes or do some civil service). While the swiss guard is mostly known for their ceremonial uniform (yellow & blue with metal helmet & hellebard), they are the actual guard for the pope & most are in suits with guns & other weapons on them like normal body/securityguards.
Thank you so much! I love learning about the background of the songs and you coming in and helping out out like this really means a lot! Thank you so much!
It is about the Swiss guard but it’s about the 1527 sacking of Rome when 189 members of the Swiss guard protected the pope and got him to castel saint angelo (don’t know if that’s how you spell it) and they sacrificed themselves to protect him.
Historian speaking here: the Sacco Di Roma, the Sacking of Rome, happened on the 6th of May 1527. It's maybe one of the most important events for Christianity in the early modern times, since the Holy See lost most of its power and reformers like Martin Luther were not as opposed as they've been before and Henry VIII. could divorce his wife, since the Pope didn't have any leverage against him after 1527. So mostly German Landsknechts and partly Spanish and Italian soldiers stormed the city of Rome. Their leader, Georg of Frundsberg, had tried to stop them from crossing the Alps a few months before but suffered from a stroke while trying to calm down his troops. After this about 20.000 men were without leadership and unleashed their anger against the Pope (since he was seen as the main reason for all the misery they've suffered from). The Spanish King, later Kaiser, wasn't able to pay his troops, since he had to deal with the French King Francis I. before and that did cost a lot of money. So 20.000 men storm the Holy City, plunder and rape most of the roman population, kill the Swiss Guard entirely and kept the Pope hostage, until he paid them, ransom for rich Romans and had to crown Charles V. as Kaiser afterwards. Until today, the 6th of May is the inauguration day for new members of the Swiss Guard.
Oh wow thank you so much for that! I love History so having you come in and helping me out in such detail is greatly greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

The story of the 189 brave soldiers in the Swiss guard during the sacking of Rome in 1527. Since Charles V, ruler of the holy roman empire couldn’t pay his troops they mutinied and forced their commander to lead them towards Rome where plunder was plentiful. When the invading force entered the vatican pope Clement VII escaped to Castel Sant’Angelo via passetto di Borgo. The few remaining guardsmen gave their lives on the steps to St. Peters Basilica.

Short version. In 1527, the army of holy roman emperor and king of Spain, Charles V, fighting in Italy and allied to the pope, revolted for lack of pay and attacked Rome to sack it and make money. The improvised defense went very well for a while, untill the commander got killed an it collapsed suddenly. Then, as thousands of maddend mercenaries were rampaging through the city, the pope escaped to safety in the castle of Sant Angello, by a covered street, and the 189 swiss guards with a few other defenders made a last stand in front of St. Peter's. Fought literally to the last man. The mercenaries were majority german protestants and the wars of religion were just getting started. If they had succeded in capturing the head of the catholic church, anything could have happened.
This history is why you even walk on this earth. America would not exist. So much to say. Sabaton tells it so true and clean. The texts, so much going on.
Hope you get better soon! Interesting conclusion to the sound of it, that "campfire story", never thought of it that way but I can certainly see and hear what you mean. Thank you so much! I am watching the video now! This was a nice change of pace for me because like you said the last few songs I heard from them have been super depressing haha
You're not a dickhead :) From a Christian perspective, it makes perfect sense that the song sounds joyous and triumphant even though it's about this group of guys getting killed almost to a man--resurrection of the Faithful to eternal life and GLORY is the very core of Christianity, and I think Sabaton nailed that concept here. This was the first Sabaton song I ever heard, and I was a goner, lol. Now, between me and my sons, there's Sabaton playing in our house every day. They've been a great addition to our homeschool history lessons, too🤘Your reaction was delightful, thanks for sharing with us!
ALSO FYI Floor Jansen from Nightwish sings the choir in a few sabaton songs to include this song, the christmas truce credits, and the future of warfare on the soundtrack edition version of the song, and the choir on the great war (only thought id say it cause i noticed you also liked nightwish like a few of us) :)

Lol It isn't the crusades but that's such a common misconception it's become a meme. It's about 189 making a final stand to buy the pope a few extra minutes to get to safety during the saking of Rome in 1527. (80% of the population was killed after this battle)
The looters: we're gonna come in and you'll stand aside and let us do our thing. The swiss guard: yeah, no. The looters: then you'll all die The swiss guard: COMETH AT ME BRETHREN!!!!

sabaton tends to bring us catchy chorus sick guitar riffs and epic true life stories and we all know and have a running joke that the drummer is married to floor jansen from Nightwish
Sabaton just grow on you, the more you listen the more you like. Their song The end of the War to End all wars is quite epic, almost Nightwish like ruclips.net/video/I5JH1by4QNo/видео.html I'm still recommending that you check out Ad Infinitum, probably the Afterlife video is a better one to start with...the entire second album Legacy is themed around the various iterations of the Dracula story (Vlad the Impaler, Bram Stoker etc.), and with song titles like Animals, Afterlife and unstoppable, you can see the connection.
Ive been working on getting through a big backlog of suggestions I have had. We are getting through them fairly quick Ad Infinitum is coming real soon!
Its pretty fun as they sing this song about chrisianity, sins Sabaton, being swedes, are hardly religious at all, swedes dont beleve in god, we beleve in Zlatan, the god of fotball
You say this song feels happy, that it doesnt have the same sad/tragic undertone as some of their other work that you heard. Well yes its from the album The Last Stand, its supposed to be glorious and magnificent and inspiring. And no need to ask if there is a history video on it. There is. For every. Single. One. Multiple parts expanding on the story even. Except currently the Chrismas Truce hasnt been made yet but its dropping at the latest when they release the full new album and make the episodes on the songs from it. Although i have a suspicion they might release the History video on the actual christmas day

Oh wow these guys are kinda epic
Get better soon!
Sabaton is amazing, you'd love them live, the energy, it's awesome.
Could you react to Suite Clarity - the will of change
I am so excited to see them live! I hope it happens sometime soon! I’ll absolutely add it to the list!
@@JoJoLewis thanks, young metal band but i'm sure you'll enjoy them, they're awesome \m/
The Sabaton album is great to work to becouse you got en stable rhythm to follow 🙂
This history is why you even walk on this earth.
America would not exist.
So much to say.
Sabaton tells it so true and clean.
The texts, so much going on.
Since you mentioned the chorus, you should check Coat of Arms. Probably my favorite chorus from any Sabaton song.
Ill absolutely drop it in the list! Thank you so much!
Hope you get better soon!
Interesting conclusion to the sound of it, that "campfire story", never thought of it that way but I can certainly see and hear what you mean.
Your love for the guitar parts is something another hip hop fan also really digs.
ruclips.net/video/vZ6wr90FNvI/видео.html For the Sabaton history episode on it.
You should really give the live versions of those songs a listen, there you have the crowd and a metric fuckton more energy. Also glad you found one of their more uplifting songs after the depressing ones you've gone through lately.
ALSO FYI Floor Jansen from Nightwish sings the choir in a few sabaton songs to include this song, the christmas truce credits, and the future of warfare on the soundtrack edition version of the song, and the choir on the great war
(only thought id say it cause i noticed you also liked nightwish like a few of us) :)
also side note and kinda cool fact considering you like nightwish and sabaton, floor jansen is married to sabatons drummer
Oh damn I thought she was only in Christmas Truce. I had no idea she was in so many songs! Thank you for letting me know!
You should react to Uprising live in Poland Woodstock Festival where they perform in front of 600 000 people!
Oh that sounds epic. I gotta see that! Thank you for letting me know!!!!!
Check out the Sabaton History episode about the song
I ended up giving it a watch and it was fantastic!!! Thank you so much for the suggestion!
try winged hussars! you will like it :)
Try watching the Sabaton history channel where they explain what their songs are all about with a historian.
Im actually gonna start doing reactions to them!
heavy metal can sound holy, change my mind
now it is time for you to try out they Christmas Truce from Sabaton
I have done christmas truce if you wanted to check it out! It should be in My sabaton reactions playlist
Sorry for my level of English, but i recommend you react to Light in Black (song about United Nation peacekeepers) and Primo Victoria (the most popular Sabaton song since 2006. It's about operation Overlord and foces of allies in Normandy in 1944).
Love ur reactions, dude🤟
Salud from Russia😀👍
I appreciate the kind words fam! I will absolutely add your suggestions to the list! Thanks for being here!!!
most people have heard of battle of thermopylae because of the movie 300.
but I doubt hollywood would make a movie about the 189 last stand because how hollywood feel about that religion
You should listen to vintersea another metal band with a female! Her growls and cleans are both awesome 🔥
songs: skies set ablaze, the holy procession, fiery tongue!
Thank you so much for your suggestions! They sound pretty interesting, Ill have to check them out!
It's about the Swiss guard that held the Romans off for the Pope to escape
May I have the privelige to rock your world? Just a little bit!?
Wintersun from Finland have made some rehearsals from Sonic pump studio, and I could imagine you to experience Time or Sons of winter and stars 🤗🤗
Merry Christmas from Denmark 🇩🇰🇩🇰
Lol
It isn't the crusades but that's such a common misconception it's become a meme.
It's about 189 making a final stand to buy the pope a few extra minutes to get to safety during the saking of Rome in 1527.
(80% of the population was killed after this battle)
Oh rip I can’t believe I fed the meme my bad 😂 thank you so much for letting me know what it actually is tho because that story is cool af
The looters: we're gonna come in and you'll stand aside and let us do our thing.
The swiss guard: yeah, no.
The looters: then you'll all die
The swiss guard: COMETH AT ME BRETHREN!!!!
I would love to see a movie about these guys!
For these Sabaton Videos, consider doing what you are doing, reacting live, then make a cut in the video. Then go watch the Sabaton history episode off camera. Finally, come back and do the reaction summary, having just viewed the history episode about the song you're reacting to.
YOOOOOO THAT IS A PHENOMENAL IDEA. I will 100% be doing that from now on!!! Thank you so much!!!!
Bro you really need to listen to Sabaton Christmas Truce. That song is a masterpiece.
I actually dropped a reaction to that a few weeks back if you wanted to check it out!
The swiss guard made their last stand to protect pope.
Its such a cool story to tell in this form!!!
@@JoJoLewis It absolutly is.
Sick!!!
Mate, pls Wintersun - Sons of winter and Stars, live at Sonic Pump Studios. I promise you will gonna love it.
sabaton tends to bring us catchy chorus sick guitar riffs and epic true life stories
and we all know and have a running joke that the drummer is married to floor jansen from Nightwish
That's not a joke, but a fact. it is becoming a meme though that fans keep mentioning it ^^
Coat of arms! Coat of arms! Coat of arms!
You know what I feel like we can get that done pretty soon!
Sabaton just grow on you, the more you listen the more you like. Their song The end of the War to End all wars is quite epic, almost Nightwish like ruclips.net/video/I5JH1by4QNo/видео.html
I'm still recommending that you check out Ad Infinitum, probably the Afterlife video is a better one to start with...the entire second album Legacy is themed around the various iterations of the Dracula story (Vlad the Impaler, Bram Stoker etc.), and with song titles like Animals, Afterlife and unstoppable, you can see the connection.
I think you should listen to their song "Fields of Verdun". It's my favorite song from them
🔥
🔥🔥🔥
in 1527 rome was under attack, and the pope ordered 189 men to stand and protect the town till they dies, it´s what the song is about
You say this song feels happy, that it doesnt have the same sad/tragic undertone as some of their other work that you heard.
Although i have a suspicion they might release the History video on the actual christmas day
Oh awesome. I’ll be honest I was a bit worried when I said that because I may have been totally off and just like pissed off a heap of people but I’m glad it was meant to be happy 😂😂😂
Turns out your assumption was correct. They DID drop it on Christmas.
Oi, can you do a reaction of Sabaton - Sparta
Please listen to Sabaton Shiroyama
I’ll add it to the list!
Please check out Japanese bands Nemophila song Dissension and Hanabie song we love sweets thank you
I’ll add them to the list! I am so excited to hear them!
Please react to rise of evil by sabaton
Ill add it to the list!!!! Thank you for the suggestions!
Hello! First of all, greetings from Hungary 🇭🇺
I offer a song: Five Finger Death Punch-Wrong Sife Of Heaven. It's so emotional. You'll not regret this :)
You know what! I’ll do that reaction today!
Hey, I hope you're feeling a little bit better by now. Maybe having a look at this video, which was dropped by Sabaton today, will cheer you up. It's pretty funny. ruclips.net/video/TvUF-KQahMw/видео.html
Thank you so much and thank you!!!!!!!!
The Swiss guard is still the ones protecting the vatican. They defended it and saved it back then. 1527 I doubt that it should be protected though today....too many paedophiles in that religion!!! I do respect them for their faith and their combat.
There’s another video shows the story better
Bro I got a song request it's poets of the fall: war
please
Ill add it to the list! Ill do my best to get it out as soon as I can!
Try something new Delain masters of destiny or with Marco the gathering or nothing left
Peters Basilica.
also why the new guards are sworn in on May 6th
