I fully agree. This is easily the most respectful song about the Holocaust I have ever heard. Like most songs I hear portray the evil but don’t bring respect to those who lost their lives. I feel like this track does.

Or a man named Sir Winston, who saved 669 children during the war. These are the kinds of stories that should never be forgotten, because it isnt just about those that were lost, or the ultimate evil, but also about those that were saved, and the people that did the saving.

We have to learn from history but we also have to differenate between who committed evil deeds and those who have noting to do with this If your grandfather is a criminal then you must be a criminal too this is how many people think when they hear something like this
On a more positive note The Last Battle by Sabaton has a great example of humanity and how just because someone is German doesn't mean they are a a Nazi. It's also one of those stories that I think desperately needs a movie about it.
That and 'hearts of iron' which was about a unit of Germain soldiers who fought to the last man to force a corridor through the American front and escort 100,000 civilians out of Berlin while the city was burning and the soviets were closing in from the other side.
As a German I need to say, that even if this was at my great-grandparents Time, many of us feel the obligation to carry the memory of this dark times foward, so nothing comparable ever happens again. I feel like every German should visit a KZ once in their Life to feel the anguish of these Places even present decades later, to fullfill this duty of memory. Of course it is intensly told in our schools, but just the pure 'knowledge' doen't even scrash the surface.

It's important that everyone learn about the Holocaust. But it is just as important that everyone, *EVERYONE* learn that not all Germans were supportive of Hitler's Third Reich. Many fought against him and died in camps or prisons themselves, and the majority of the populace did not know about the camps. Everyone needs to learn of heroes who fought; Claus Stauffenberg and fellow co conspirators in the July 20 Plot, Josef Gangl who gave his life defending POWs from Waffen-SS, Oskar Schindler who rescued over 1200 Jews from Auschwitz, etc. That particular evil did not belong to a nation or a people. It belonged to an ideology.
the Sabaton History Channel video for this is also a good punch in the gut, there are a very few video's of them playing this live, but for the most part they don't perform this song as it's a heavy topic . but still an amazing song. NEVER FORGET
I am German. I have seen them live several times and one time they played this as an acoustic version in Germany. So good while hitting so hard. I have never cried so much for multiple reasons at a concert.
They played 'The Final Solution' as instrumental at their 2017 tour in Germany. And then out of nowhere the entire audience was singing as loud as possible. One of the most impressive concert moments ever!

@Jojo: There is a reason why, even today, the Jews still alive always say: "Never again. Never forget." I'll put it this way: My 10th grade English teacher went to Europe, and visited Dachau. She brought back pictures of the camp. The pictures of the horrors I saw that day hit me so deeply that I wasnt aware of it, until later -- and when it did, I nearly broke down in my history class. In English class, this was paired with the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor. That book, if you've never read it, will make you awed and angry, and probably filled with sorrow. Though it was one of the darkest chapters of human history, I fully agree: Never again. Never forget.
Additional fact: The famous words at the gate of Auschwitz “work sets you free” was a cruel play on words (found at many other camps as well). When liberating Treblinka, another sinister play on words was found; one that made (still makes) people at a complete loss of words. The wayward to the inevitable chamber had the word “”Himmelstrasse” on the top of the gate. The word translates to “Heaven’s Road”.

Yes, true. Especially right before the refrain, when the guitar goes up and down between an E and an F. You can actually hear a clanking undertone like that of railway trucks.
Sabaton has this touch that gives sense to every word, covered and coated in a very catchy music. That made their songs something strong and ineffable. Peace on you. Loading empathy !
Good metal and good hip hop are meant to portray emotion in the rawest form they can. Sabaton understands this and is able to put a fraction of the fear and despair of the witnesses in this song.
The base beat with the drums near the end to me is very similar to the sound of running steam trains, that's how most of the prisoners arrived at the camps. Such a gut punch song
This is history that needs to be told and never forgotten so it won't be repeated. Nowadays they say that our younger generations are selfish and are lacking in empathy and understanding. This is a very deep and educational song. I'm also a history nerd and when I was 15 my school was visited by an Auschwitz survivor (If I recall correctly, his name was Emerich Roth. I may be wrong. It was about 10 years ago.) and we even had the "privilege" to visit Auschwitz. I highly recommend go visit those places. Even if you're not that interested in history, this is an important chapter of history that must never, ever *ever* be forgotten, lest it repeats again.
Sadly it seems its going to repeat again, maybe nowhere near the cruelty and evil, but back then you really could say the Nazis took the Jews for the thought crime of daring to be Jews, or the myriad others they took for daring to go against the regime. They were first marginalized and treated as outcasts, then their businesses boycotted and their livelihoods dashed and their jobs lost and they were marked to be obvious to others to be avoided, and these days those who disagree with certain parties (its obvious which < party) are being marginalized and treated as outcasts by their woke, many business owners who don't bow get sued or fined heavily for disobeying, jobs were lost when many didn't want to bow to the government saying "its for your own good" once again just as the Nazis did back then, some are publicly canceled or have black marks put on their identity that employers can see and thus overlook a good person for the position, it makes me wonder what the final step will be, once all who disagree with our current growing regime in the West are fully isolated in the coming years and left to waste away what suffering they'll heap upon us or otherwise just work hard to "cleanse" the nation of the dissenters and the ones who have disabilities, like the whole MAID crap now. Imagine world leaders who remember the Holocaust and yet they decide to perform the same things just with better tech and more subtlety and propaganda and distractions so nobody notices what's happening beneath our noses, as well as failing to teach us about the past with the gravitas required to burn it into our minds as a thing to watch out for, fight against and avoid. We're at the beginning right now.
While this song is amazing and the story behind it is one of humanity's worst tragedies I can't stop from headbanging all the way along, it's simply too powerful... And the fact that the guitar's riff is the sound of an old train simply highlights the talent and creativity that distinguish sabaton from other bands

Such an intense song, telling a horrific story. I remember many stories my grandparents told me about the WW2 period and even my dad, who was a little boy at the time, remembers some things very vividly. These stories need to keep being told and Sabaton does that very well. Greetings from the Netherlands.
I had the pleasure of meeting a polish surviver that our school arranged. And listening to him talk about that experience was something else and something that i will never forget.
Did that museum you're talking about happen to be the Jewish Museum of Sydney by any chance? I went there twice and both times they had a Holocaust survivor talk to us. The saddest part was the room full of pictures of children who died and had no names attached to the photos.
This and the "why we fight" episode of band of brothers It's good that they both had the balls.to cover such a hard subject though it is a bit of an emotional gut punch
to me the instruments fading at the end to just vocals has always conveyed the death of hope since most of their songs are celebratory in nature the removal of the music makes the final chorus sound that much darker and the last fade out is that single scared voice being lost in the darkness forever and now I need to go listen to something upbeat sabaton: swedish pagans - the perennial sabaton party song and Joakim's hatred of it is mostly an act babymetal: oh majinai - Joakim growling plus babymetal's energy ends up with the ultimate pirate song the Hu: wolf totem - just because they sound like nothing else

I had the honor of visiting Dachau. We were the first group in morning. So few people in the camp so we had a lot of open space. I saw the place with branches permanently bent. They shot people in the back of the head there. Then the firing squad field. The guard towers. I never felt so packed and watched in an open area. The gas chamber wall was rough unsmooth. I felt suffocation there. Just packed among the souls. The thousands of souls of the fallen are there. It's a place of utter disparity. I still think if anyone gets the chance, take it. You'll feel something so powerful and somber that nothing can match that kind of evil that also resides in the trees, the buildings, just everything.
You should watch Final Solution immediately after Rise of Evil. They go hand in hand and tell the whole story of the rise of Hitler to power and the call for then execution of the Holocaust. Definitely more impact full to listen to both songs together. I've been a LONG time WW2 history nut and Sabaton has taught me things that even I haven't heard about or known of. They are in a unique class of their own who deserve all the heaps of accolades and praises thrown their way. They transcend music, genres, race, religion and politics. They have taken it upon themselves to ensure that we don't forget our past and are not doomed to repeat the tragedies throughout the ages. They are gods amongst moral men and I for one am forever grateful for them spreading the knowledge and experiences of our forefathers and ancestors.
I honestly believe they are one of the most important bands around today. More people absolutely need to hear them. They tell important moments in history weather well known or not!
This one is definitely hard. I don't listen to it often bc of the very reasons you mentioned. For a Sabaton song that inspires patriotism and the need to go pick up arms, I suggest their cover of Radio Tapok's "Defense of Moscow." As hard as this song is to listen to, if you happen to go back and listen to it again, you will noticed they added in one very brilliant touch.. throughout the song, they use guitar riffs and drums to replicate the sounds of a moving train. Its most noticeable in the background during "Enter the gates, Auschwitz Awaits".
The Price of a Mile, Angels Calling, The End of the War to End all Wars, Cliff of Gallipoli, En Livstid I Krig, The Hammer Has Fallen, Inmate 4859 for me are the ones most "heaviest" songs from Sabaton. But this one, exactly this one, is the first place...
I live in Germany though not a German and on the 200 metre walk to the tram stop by my house I have to walk past three sets of Stolpersteine (hand-crafted brass plaques in the ground where victims of the Nazi regime last lived) They are a powerful everyday reminder of the holocaust.
If you check live version of this song it hits even harder. They put special flames on scene and do this song using acoustic guitars and boxes instead of drums.
I'm not sure if it was in the Sabaton History or who said it, but remembering horrible events in the past is only the first part, it is just as - if not even more - important to remember how it came to this, the decisions and attitudes that lead to them. I agree with that.
One little musical detail: the bass is actually played to sound like a train on the move, and right at the end of the pre-chorus, the ride cymbal sound like the bell used to annouce the arrival of a train.
I visited Auschwitz for a high school trip... and I can tell you, not one of us 68 teens left with dry eyes. Sometimes the only way to see the best in humanity, is to see our worst. It was a great trip, even thou we visted a true place of evil, It was very insightful. I do recomend going if you get a chance.
This song is one that you just kinda...just sits and takes in. Its a dark thing to listen to, when you know its context. On a school trip many many many years ago, I went to see the camp in Prague. I hated being there becouse the feelings were so intense. So treated it like a boring playground, but I just stuck by my teachers and did the tour and left. I then later found out that, the one in Prague was considered a luxusury, compared to other camps. I have seen them on Google Maps and still the intense energy of those places, flows thru the screen. Im not sure I wanna visit those places, but its a part of history that cant be forgotten. Have a good day.

Music invokes feelings, sometimes happy and sometimes genuinely sad. Especially when the song is covering a topic like this one. Feeling distraught after hearing this song only proves that you are a good person. Imagine leaving this with a smile on your face.. No, it's a heavy subject, but if we do not continue to expose the ugly truths of history we run the risk of them disappearing in time, and we can't allow that to happen.
Sabaton absolutely needs to be heard by more people. They share important history lessons that need to be shared. F this song is probably the most mature song I’ve heard if the subject and I think it will really be if it people to hear it.

Sabaton is the greatest history teacher of all time! I would have been more into history if I had them as teachers instead of the boring one I had in high-school. Its a very heavy topic but im glad its one that Sabaton covered and one you decided to react to. I like that Sabaton makes a reference to other groups who suffered in the Holocaust, like one I wasn't aware of was Jehovah Witness who were persecuted for how their faith didn't fit in with National Socialism. It's interesting cause unlike other groups of people who were perscuted, they were given the chance to renounce their faith and return to normal life, to which the vast majority of them refused. Its one of the reason I love Sabaton, epic music! and free history lessons! Also another side note, the guitar rift in this is played in a way that's sounds like a train travelling along track's.

another great piece of art on this topic is a short poem of Martin Niemöller titled "first they came" which is unfortunately rather topical to this day It's not something you can make a video about but I'd highly recomend looking it up ... and knowing that Niemöller started off as a Nazi sympathizer makes it even more impactfull
I can't remember where I read it, think it was the official lyric video. But anyways, someone had pointed at certain points in the song the guitar sounds like the wheels of a steam engine chugging along. It's really fucking erie to think about that.

This is only the 2nd Sabaton song I've heard, the other being Christmas Truce. I'm getting the impression one doesn't listen Sabaton to feel good and uplifted. Don't get me wrong musically I'm liking it, but damn their subject matter is hard. Bloody hell.
@Ian Wood. Not all of Sabaton’s songs are about difficult subjects, but I applaud them for caring enough to bring notice to difficult subjects in a very respectful manner. He’s done other Sabaton songs that are the opposite of these sad, depressed songs. So much so, one can only feel pumped and ready to take on the world or being proud to be Russian when you’re actually an American! If you like, I can recommend some really fun and “uplifting” songs…and there are lots of them!
Quite a few of there songs have a heavy subject they talk about, but alot of the songs are uplifting and bring pride and patriotism out. (To me at least) such as Ghost Division, 40 to 1, Coat of Arms, and 82nd all the way to name a few are songs that pump me up. But thats why they are my favorite band, they bring so many emotions out from music, make you feel pride for countries your not from, and teach history in an interesting way.

@@JoJoLewis That one is really great in a different way than most Sabaton songs. I would say the real epicness lies in the history with that one. One of the few where the Sabaton history video is actually better than the music itself.. It should be considered a crime that the major film studios have not made at least a dozen movies about that guy. It's a truly great, and f:ed up, story..
I loved learning that! Imagine going to Auschwitz willingly in order to find out what it was exactly, then escape. It must have been heart breaking for Witold to tell the Polish what he learned, and then have his requests for a rescue/assault on Auschwitz be denied simply because they didn't have enough people.
If you want to expand your metal world might I recommend some Iron Maiden? If you'd like to continue with the war theme there is Paschendale as my personal favourite war song from them. Another great (not war related song) is Empire of the Clouds, which tells the story of the R-101 airship and it's 18 minutes long! It's just epic. Another long song is Rime of the Ancient Mariner at 13 minutes, which tells the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Just some suggestions for the lighter metal you seem to be also dipping your toes into! These at least are songs that I've enjoyed. :)

On a more positive note The Last Battle by Sabaton has a great example of humanity and how just because someone is German doesn't mean they are a a Nazi. It's also one of those stories that I think desperately needs a movie about it.
That and 'hearts of iron' which was about a unit of Germain soldiers who fought to the last man to force a corridor through the American front and escort 100,000 civilians out of Berlin while the city was burning and the soviets were closing in from the other side.

As a German I need to say, that even if this was at my great-grandparents Time, many of us feel the obligation to carry the memory of this dark times foward, so nothing comparable ever happens again. I feel like every German should visit a KZ once in their Life to feel the anguish of these Places even present decades later, to fullfill this duty of memory. Of course it is intensly told in our schools, but just the pure 'knowledge' doen't even scrash the surface.
we had one of the KZ survivors in our school 20+ years ago, it hit hard. And today, with me knowing more, even more.

It's important that everyone learn about the Holocaust. But it is just as important that everyone, *EVERYONE* learn that not all Germans were supportive of Hitler's Third Reich. Many fought against him and died in camps or prisons themselves, and the majority of the populace did not know about the camps. Everyone needs to learn of heroes who fought; Claus Stauffenberg and fellow co conspirators in the July 20 Plot, Josef Gangl who gave his life defending POWs from Waffen-SS, Oskar Schindler who rescued over 1200 Jews from Auschwitz, etc.
That particular evil did not belong to a nation or a people. It belonged to an ideology.
the Sabaton History Channel video for this is also a good punch in the gut, there are a very few video's of them playing this live, but for the most part they don't perform this song as it's a heavy topic . but still an amazing song. NEVER FORGET

I am German. I have seen them live several times and one time they played this as an acoustic version in Germany. So good while hitting so hard. I have never cried so much for multiple reasons at a concert.
They played 'The Final Solution' as instrumental at their 2017 tour in Germany.
And then out of nowhere the entire audience was singing as loud as possible.

I'll put it this way: My 10th grade English teacher went to Europe, and visited Dachau. She brought back pictures of the camp. The pictures of the horrors I saw that day hit me so deeply that I wasnt aware of it, until later -- and when it did, I nearly broke down in my history class. In English class, this was paired with the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor. That book, if you've never read it, will make you awed and angry, and probably filled with sorrow. Though it was one of the darkest chapters of human history, I fully agree:

Yes, true. Especially right before the refrain, when the guitar goes up and down between an E and an F. You can actually hear a clanking undertone like that of railway trucks.
They've done something conceptually similar in The Lost Battalion when they used gun sound samples for drums, IIRC.
As depressing as this song is. Like all sabaton tracks it absolutely slaps.

Good metal and good hip hop are meant to portray emotion in the rawest form they can. Sabaton understands this and is able to put a fraction of the fear and despair of the witnesses in this song.
The base beat with the drums near the end to me is very similar to the sound of running steam trains, that's how most of the prisoners arrived at the camps. Such a gut punch song

This is a very deep and educational song. I'm also a history nerd and when I was 15 my school was visited by an Auschwitz survivor (If I recall correctly, his name was Emerich Roth. I may be wrong. It was about 10 years ago.) and we even had the "privilege" to visit Auschwitz. I highly recommend go visit those places. Even if you're not that interested in history, this is an important chapter of history that must never, ever *ever* be forgotten, lest it repeats again.

Sadly it seems its going to repeat again, maybe nowhere near the cruelty and evil, but back then you really could say the Nazis took the Jews for the thought crime of daring to be Jews, or the myriad others they took for daring to go against the regime. They were first marginalized and treated as outcasts, then their businesses boycotted and their livelihoods dashed and their jobs lost and they were marked to be obvious to others to be avoided, and these days those who disagree with certain parties (its obvious which < party) are being marginalized and treated as outcasts by their woke, many business owners who don't bow get sued or fined heavily for disobeying, jobs were lost when many didn't want to bow to the government saying "its for your own good" once again just as the Nazis did back then, some are publicly canceled or have black marks put on their identity that employers can see and thus overlook a good person for the position, it makes me wonder what the final step will be, once all who disagree with our current growing regime in the West are fully isolated in the coming years and left to waste away what suffering they'll heap upon us or otherwise just work hard to "cleanse" the nation of the dissenters and the ones who have disabilities, like the whole MAID crap now. Imagine world leaders who remember the Holocaust and yet they decide to perform the same things just with better tech and more subtlety and propaganda and distractions so nobody notices what's happening beneath our noses, as well as failing to teach us about the past with the gravitas required to burn it into our minds as a thing to watch out for, fight against and avoid. We're at the beginning right now.

Such an intense song, telling a horrific story. I remember many stories my grandparents told me about the WW2 period and even my dad, who was a little boy at the time, remembers some things very vividly. These stories need to keep being told and Sabaton does that very well. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Did that museum you're talking about happen to be the Jewish Museum of Sydney by any chance? I went there twice and both times they had a Holocaust survivor talk to us. The saddest part was the room full of pictures of children who died and had no names attached to the photos.

I had the honor of visiting Dachau. We were the first group in morning. So few people in the camp so we had a lot of open space. I saw the place with branches permanently bent. They shot people in the back of the head there. Then the firing squad field. The guard towers. I never felt so packed and watched in an open area. The gas chamber wall was rough unsmooth. I felt suffocation there. Just packed among the souls. The thousands of souls of the fallen are there. It's a place of utter disparity. I still think if anyone gets the chance, take it. You'll feel something so powerful and somber that nothing can match that kind of evil that also resides in the trees, the buildings, just everything.
You should watch Final Solution immediately after Rise of Evil. They go hand in hand and tell the whole story of the rise of Hitler to power and the call for then execution of the Holocaust. Definitely more impact full to listen to both songs together.
I've been a LONG time WW2 history nut and Sabaton has taught me things that even I haven't heard about or known of. They are in a unique class of their own who deserve all the heaps of accolades and praises thrown their way. They transcend music, genres, race, religion and politics. They have taken it upon themselves to ensure that we don't forget our past and are not doomed to repeat the tragedies throughout the ages. They are gods amongst moral men and I for one am forever grateful for them spreading the knowledge and experiences of our forefathers and ancestors.
I honestly believe they are one of the most important bands around today. More people absolutely need to hear them. They tell important moments in history weather well known or not!

As hard as this song is to listen to, if you happen to go back and listen to it again, you will noticed they added in one very brilliant touch.. throughout the song, they use guitar riffs and drums to replicate the sounds of a moving train. Its most noticeable in the background during "Enter the gates, Auschwitz Awaits".

One little musical detail: the bass is actually played to sound like a train on the move, and right at the end of the pre-chorus, the ride cymbal sound like the bell used to annouce the arrival of a train.
I visited Auschwitz for a high school trip... and I can tell you, not one of us 68 teens left with dry eyes. Sometimes the only way to see the best in humanity, is to see our worst. It was a great trip, even thou we visted a true place of evil, It was very insightful. I do recomend going if you get a chance.

On a school trip many many many years ago, I went to see the camp in Prague. I hated being there becouse the feelings were so intense. So treated it like a boring playground, but I just stuck by my teachers and did the tour and left.
I then later found out that, the one in Prague was considered a luxusury, compared to other camps.
I have seen them on Google Maps and still the intense energy of those places, flows thru the screen. Im not sure I wanna visit those places, but its a part of history that cant be forgotten.

Music invokes feelings, sometimes happy and sometimes genuinely sad. Especially when the song is covering a topic like this one. Feeling distraught after hearing this song only proves that you are a good person. Imagine leaving this with a smile on your face.. No, it's a heavy subject, but if we do not continue to expose the ugly truths of history we run the risk of them disappearing in time, and we can't allow that to happen.
Sabaton absolutely needs to be heard by more people. They share important history lessons that need to be shared. F this song is probably the most mature song I’ve heard if the subject and I think it will really be if it people to hear it.

Sabaton is the greatest history teacher of all time! I would have been more into history if I had them as teachers instead of the boring one I had in high-school. As a fellow swede I'm proud to have the same nationality as them.. if I'm lucky enough to attend one of their concerts I wouldn't have any problems speaking to them if I were got the chance. :-)

Its a very heavy topic but im glad its one that Sabaton covered and one you decided to react to. I like that Sabaton makes a reference to other groups who suffered in the Holocaust, like one I wasn't aware of was Jehovah Witness who were persecuted for how their faith didn't fit in with National Socialism. It's interesting cause unlike other groups of people who were perscuted, they were given the chance to renounce their faith and return to normal life, to which the vast majority of them refused. Its one of the reason I love Sabaton, epic music! and free history lessons!
Also another side note, the guitar rift in this is played in a way that's sounds like a train travelling along track's.

@Ian Wood. Not all of Sabaton’s songs are about difficult subjects, but I applaud them for caring enough to bring notice to difficult subjects in a very respectful manner. He’s done other Sabaton songs that are the opposite of these sad, depressed songs. So much so, one can only feel pumped and ready to take on the world or being proud to be Russian when you’re actually an American! If you like, I can recommend some really fun and “uplifting” songs…and there are lots of them!
Quite a few of there songs have a heavy subject they talk about, but alot of the songs are uplifting and bring pride and patriotism out. (To me at least) such as Ghost Division, 40 to 1, Coat of Arms, and 82nd all the way to name a few are songs that pump me up.
But thats why they are my favorite band, they bring so many emotions out from music, make you feel pride for countries your not from, and teach history in an interesting way.
I’d suggest Carolus Rex it’s really headband and hype

I really recommend “inmate 4859” by sabaton, an unbelievable story about Witold Pilecki!

@@JoJoLewis That one is really great in a different way than most Sabaton songs. I would say the real epicness lies in the history with that one. One of the few where the Sabaton history video is actually better than the music itself.. It should be considered a crime that the major film studios have not made at least a dozen movies about that guy. It's a truly great, and f:ed up, story..
I loved learning that! Imagine going to Auschwitz willingly in order to find out what it was exactly, then escape. It must have been heart breaking for Witold to tell the Polish what he learned, and then have his requests for a rescue/assault on Auschwitz be denied simply because they didn't have enough people.
The Pilecki report is able for everyone to read too
If you want to expand your metal world might I recommend some Iron Maiden? If you'd like to continue with the war theme there is Paschendale as my personal favourite war song from them. Another great (not war related song) is Empire of the Clouds, which tells the story of the R-101 airship and it's 18 minutes long! It's just epic. Another long song is Rime of the Ancient Mariner at 13 minutes, which tells the Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Just some suggestions for the lighter metal you seem to be also dipping your toes into! These at least are songs that I've enjoyed. :)
