A lot of their songs are celebrations of bravery and heroism even when it truly tragic. It often makes people from all over the world routing for nations they don't live in and have no connection to. Resist and Bite, Ghost Division, 40:1, Defense of Mascow, Primo Victoria are all songs around WW2 but all are about different events in different countries. But they make you feel like you are their countrymen.
The song isn't necessarily Christian, per se. The reason it sounds as if it is because for the men that the story is about, they were defending the gates of Heaven and God's chosen representative on Earth. They died, heroically and willingly, giving their lives for a purpose and a cause they believed in, succeeding in their mission and earning their place in history.
In medieval Europe, the Swiss pikemen were considered some of the best mercenaries you could hire and were in the personal guard of many of the heads of Europe. This ended (with the exception of the Vatican Swiss Guards) in 1874 with an amendment to the Swiss constitution that banned the recruitment of Swiss citizens for foreign mercenary units.
You mentioned the 300 spartans. They have a song about that too just called Sparta. It's from the same album. The entire album is about heroic last stands.

I am no history authority but I think that this was what led to the pope proclaiming that the Swiss guard would stand guard in the Vatican in perpetuity! Correct me if I'm wrong... On a side note you NEED to react to the guitarist from Sabaton, Tommy Johansson! He's just an amazing talent. I recommend his cover of Gary Moore's "Over the Hills and Far Away"!❤
