I've been in this exact situation before ...and more than once. It wasn't that bad out there .. They could have conceivably salvaged the mast and sails by disconnecting all of the halyards and stays, wrapping them around the mast (though I can't tell if they had a dinghy or not) then winching them up to the deck, tie them down and motor back to shore. They were certainly close enough. Also, it looks like that mast was not up for the amount of loads they were putting on her. Anyway, glad no one was hurt and you lived to sail another day.
You weren't in immediate danger. You had time to take stock and salvage what you could for a jury rig. Instead, all you did is go straight to Defcon 1 and consign your options to the deep. Tell me, did you break out the oars and start rowing? Thank you for posting this. It is at the very least a learning opportunity for others.
I had a mast broken on a beach cat and we could safe the rig and the sail. But we put ourselves in extreme danger by doing so. Usually the sail is in the mast and its very difficult to get it out when the mast is broken. It is possible that the mast punctures the hull and then you have a big problem even on an unsinkable boat like a cat. So it depends on the exact situation (fuel, next shore, weather) if its safer to safe the rig or not. Also have in mind that usually the sail is damaged anyway and that you cannot trust the standing rigging anymore. There are so many risks involved where you can easily loose a finger, hand or foot or your life. @@achosenman9376
Born2Sail Except the sail is clearly not in the mast. Cats are not unsinkable and no longer trusting standing rigging is a red herring. The rigging has just failed, of course it can’t be trusted, but salvaging what you can enables you to have items for a jury rig. Sails torn or otherwise, can still be rigged to provide drive. The video clearly shows there was no need to rush into an irreversible course of action. Take your time, think things through, plan and then act.
@@achosenman9376 The sail is connected with the mast with sliders. Different system same problem. With: "The standing rigining can't be trusted anymore" I meant that in this situation you can't be sure if the surviving wire ropes survive much longer. There is tension on them and when you accidentally had stepped into a loop, well then you go down. Usually there are more sails on board, maybe a code zero or a storm sail ore a kite, they saved the boom so there are plenty of options to build a jury rig. All Cats can capsize and they have no keel, usually the platform floats and performs as the main rescue platform. If you are taking you time in an emergency situation it is too late. Not a good idea to think things trough in a MOB situation. You have to think about possible dangers and how to react to them before something happens.
Thanks in the first line to post a Video with such a fault.. ! We all can learn and do it beetr when we are out there ... so now everybody sitting comfortable and save in his chair in front of the Computer can give commands ..like me ;-)) i see two people and ask my self how they could possibly get out a mast and with a wet sail hanging on it? have you ever tryed to get a sail out of the water standing on a surfboard? ..try this and then ask you´re self how heavy a 10 time bigger sail might be... I heard the voices and thought okee quite cool for such a shit that happend... and please watch you language and don´t you never ever loose appreciation .. thanks...
Are you stupid? I dont know anything about sailing but ive watched like 2 mast broken videos and i can conclude that the mast will probably damage the boat and sink it, so now i dont know about you but i think 1 mast and sail underwater is better than 1 mast sail and a whole fucking boat with diesel and shit underwater. like its just common sense XD
We are owner of thise boat for over 10 years we did not call Mayday and by the way I am a Boat bilder and my brother work for helicopter rescue I think there is more problems with people teaching things they dont know about
Why not sail safer with less sail surface?

0:17 thumbs up while the mast is bent like a banana
That is probably the fish eye on the gopro

warum die genua?
Überlastung Equipment; wer fährt so; siehe Kielwasser
Man, scheiße. Tut mir echt leid. Eigenes oder Charterschiff?
In dem Fall leider ein Privatboot...
And why did he throw away mast and sails?
Mast was broken and to get the Sails out is dangeres and take Time Storm was caming and sails was old anyway
@@vallesail1951 Ah, yeah, at 3:00 I can see that mast is broken. I still would try to salvage sails though.

I can't believe they don't keep the sails ...
it was a safety decision

Faaarrrr too much sail for an old, poorly maintained boat, could see that coming a mile off.
I have looked at this 4 times and cannot see how you arrive at the conclusion it is poorly maintained.
Is it wood or aluminium ? What size please ?
Fibreglass I guess around 30 feet (9metres)

the best that could happen! if there was a coup of a catamaran, it would be fucked up!

weather allows to go up the rigging. The sea is not a trash. Safety is valid for the underwater world. I am ashamed for you
Sure you are, because when heavy weather is comming, you would like a regular Superman lift the broken mast and sails out of the water, genius.
He is just making an artificial reef. When you have to dump it or risk damaging your boat. I say dump it.

what make/model/year of boat? how did you get back to shore?
