@@geoall2710 You can do this, but California Franchise Tax Board will know that you are still earning income in California so they will want their taxes. This was the best information I have found on establishing residency as a full time traveler in SD, thank you for the info, I was in and out of DMV in less than 20 min with my new DL. 😎
Good video on how to get a SD driver's license...but there is a lot more to it than that to establish legal domicile for tax purposes, especially if you are moving from a tax hungry state such as NY or California..items such as: establishing your banking in SD, transferring the account address for credit cards and other services to SD, getting doctors and dentist/medical insurance in SD, registering and insuring your vehicles (if any) in SD, establishing a paper trail that you have left NY by canceling your apartment lease & utilities, selling property, shipping a few boxes of stuff to SD, renting a uhaul, canceling NY clubs/joining SD clubs (if that's your thing), forwarding mail to SD etc etc etc....not doing a few of these things could set your old state to say you never left and demand tax payments and hefty fines....especially when they prove you never went back to SD after your one day in the state to get your drivers license and then told the world about it in a RUclips video. Plus you might want to investigate and explain to your viewers that the PMB you describe does not solve all "Moving to SD" problems...apparently many banks and financial institutions these days will not accept a Personal Mailbox address...likewise medical and car insurance companies may not accept PMB addresses. Some car insurance companies will not insure you unless you are also insuring an RV...go figure. A quick check around the internet should validate the points I make here.
Exactly! When my parents moved out of Minnesota for Florida, MN Revenue challenged their FL residency and they had to prove, with credit cards and utility bills, that they lived in FL for at least 6 months that first year. Once you've established that first year, then you can travel year round and your old state can't come after you.
What I just found, 1 1/4 years into my SD full time traveler journey, is that the banks (and maybe other financial institutions) are prohibited from accepting PO Boxes as the residency address. Further, it seems that banks do not make a distinction between POB and PMB. For example, I found in the Ally bank FAQ that they do not accept PO Box addresses nor addresses from "mail drop services". My bank finally noticed I'd changed to a PMB address and sent me a letter saying they were going to lock my account. The only way out was to use the address of a relative. They are quite okay to use the PMB as the mailing address, but not the residence address. This was true even though I pointed out my SD drivers license has the PMB address and therefore SD considers that to be my residence.
This only works IF you don’t own property in another state where the state can claim domicile. For example, in Virginia, you pay state tax on income earned in Virginia even if you don’t live in Virginia. If you reside in any state for a given number of days (specific to the state), the state taxing authority can declare you a state resident for income taxation purposes. Might work best if you are constantly on the move…never spending too much time in any one place.
Great video! Could you share your personal experience regarding switching your address with banks please? I heard America's PMB isn't accepted as one's residential address. Thanks
Hi, I wish poster did mention or respond to these comments. Having worked at a few major financial institutions and actually coming to learn about this all of this while working at one. A client had a flag on it about there address I think it was my best address (Google it) similar to company he mentioned for PMB. At least at the company I was at when flag occurs like this ( as I'm sure they have list they compare account and addresses to ) but then the manual account approval team literally Google map street viewed your address and it became a headache from there. So, that is a very legit concern.
I recently went through that. However, even though online wouldn't let me change the address I called the bank and just told them it was this or nothing since I wouldn't have a permeant address and I wasn't going to update my address every two weeks or months depending on my travel schedule. The associate put my pmb address in.

SD residency doesn’t work for those who actually live in another state but for those who have no state it sounds great. Thanks.
Probably because literally all you need is a receipt of a hotel stay for 1 night. All the other states you are required to do a bunch of other bull shit. The next thing to know is that it's not just about gathering documents. You must show documents that demonstrate your chosen mailing address. That means changing addresses with financial institutions, a process that can take a month or two before statements show the new address. The problem with America's Mailbox is the city it's in does not have a well-connected airport. Okay, we're talking about South Dakota, which has no city with a large enough airport to have good flight connections. The impact of this is, if your trips to/from SD are by air, you're paying more for the flights. We chose to make our home base in Sioux Falls because it's airport is a little businer and a little more connected.

US citizens are taxed regardless of where they live. US is one of the very few countries that does this. So Americans abroad, like me, need to maintain ties to the US in many cases for banking, credit cards, erc.

Good in theory but high tax states are aware of this and will come after you. When my parents moved out of Minnesota for Florida, MN Revenue challenged their Florida residency. My parents had to prove with credit card receipts and utility bills that they were in fact living in Florida for over 6 months a year. It's not enough to not live in a state but you have to prove that you are living in your new state for at least 6 months that first year. After the first year, then you're home free. Be careful!
@PA96704 I guess you didn't understand my reply. They didn't just do it by the book to be good little pawns. Thankfully, they followed the book because Minnesota Revenue challenged their claim. My parents had to prove to MN Rev that they were indeed out of state by where the purchases were made on their credit card statements. Not just where their statements were mailed to, but where the purchases were made on the statement. So, if you can fake that, then good luck

A state Id and a drivers license have different applications. It is very difficult to obtain more than one type of identification card at the same time. The vehicle can not be registered in SD if you only have an ID card.
Hey Taylor great video, would this be possible in order to go to university in South Dakota at a cheaper rate due to being a resident
Great video. But spend a few bucks with the local people before exiting the state and every time you visit. :)
I'm a licensed contractor in the state of California, I have a simple question, why do you think in your opinion that South Dakota has more leniency to business owners and residents? For example, contractors in your state are not required to have a state license or pay any license fees, in California it's the opposite, what is your opinion on this?
Hey GD. I don't have an opinion on that. I chose SD as my state of residency because I live mainly outside of the US.
Can you please help me though how are you getting car insurance? I’m having the worst time ever getting car insurance now that I went and did this no one wants to insure my vehicles!?! Please help!!
Do I go to Cali DMV to cancel ID?
report IRS change to SD address or foreign address?
More, more, more, please!!
Just to clarify, if my Utah DL has a gold star which means I presented by birth certificate to the Utah DMV, do I still need to provide my birth certificate as well? I had that years ago but now it is lost, and my passport is long expired. Requesting both will take a few months and I'd rather not wait that long. 2nd question, do I need to surrender my Utah DL?
I have a question does your driver's license say 514 Americas way PMB and the number or does it just have just the number or did you use apt. and your number????
Great info, but no need to repeat the steps 3x
What if you just want to register a vehicle, but not establish residency. I hear this can all be done online and/or by mail? Do you that process?
This makes me happy to live in New Hampshire.
States 0 in Florida too
Only question I have, if you go live abroad, why do you still need to have an established domicile in the US if you don't live in the US anymore? I left my home country of Australia and have no domicile there now - it's currently California (where i've lived and worked the past 9 years). But I am looking to exit California and if I exit the US completely, I shouldn't need to maintain a domicile nit he US - not even South Dakota - anymore, correct? Is this only for US citizens looking to return some day?
Because US laws are screwed up. Just look at weed laws. Many states have legalized weed, but still banned federally.
Banks, Brokerages, Employment, etc.
US citizens are taxed regardless of where they live. US is one of the very few countries that does this. So Americans abroad, like me, need to maintain ties to the US in many cases for banking, credit cards, erc.
Anyone know how this works with Homestead in FL?
So you can’t do all this but actually reside in CA?
Can I do it from Ireland
It was announced .
That if you work online and the company is in a different state, the company you work for CAN'T pay the S.D workers comp and unemployment .
Therfore you can't be a citizen of SD.
best regards.
Can you update this?
No need to. Nothing changed.
Uh oh! Just heard some nasty things the state of SD will be doing to RVers and others that are using SD as a tax shelter. I was thinking of doing this when I retire in a few years. Looks like I'll be looking into Texas now. Bummer.
Hey man, great information! Question: I'm transferring from MD, If my none South Dakota drivers license have a star in the top right then that means I don't need to show my social security card/pay stub/ w-2?
So just my passport and my license with the star is enough?
Can you register your car there too?
For sure. You can register it online. It's an incredibly friendly state for travelers.
what about jury duty?
jury duty is tied to your voter registration you must ensure that whatever state you have a drivers license that you have unregistered yourself from voter registration to not be selected for jury duty

But you'll pay plenty in sales tax, even on groceries when you're in state, so there's that.
You're only there 1 night to get DL. Then off to Mexico or wherever you live
Great video! Thanks. Just one question, did they put your address as a P.O. Box on your license?
No it’s actually a physical address that you get. It’s not a PO Box. It’s a “Personal Mailbox”. You use their street address and they give you a “unit number”. Check out AmericasMailBox.com - that’s who I used and am really happy with it
@@Taylor333 Thank you very much. Another question, if I could please. Is your vehicle registered for South Dakota and do you actually "sleep" and work in another state? How doest that work?
@@Mike-kp8ej, South Dakota is very friendly toward permanent travelers - I believe it is mainly for people that are RV’ing all over the place. It’s not something to do if you are genuinely a resident of another state. I recommend it for people that are traveling full time. Here is their site where you can check out the process and rules: dps.sd.gov/driver-licensing
Domicile not resident ?\
MORE!!! 👌
Yea no state tax but you now with recent changes you can’t vote if you are not an actual resident.
Voting no longer counts anyways
Good in theory but high tax states are aware of this and will come after you. When my parents moved out of Minnesota for Florida, MN Revenue challenged their Florida residency. My parents had to prove with credit card receipts and utility bills that they were in fact living in Florida for over 6 months a year. It's not enough to not live in a state but you have to prove that you are living in your new state for at least 6 months that first year. After the first year, then you're home free. Be careful!
Don't be scared! Your parents followed the law. Just follow the steps. Don't J walk you might get a ticket or get run over.
@@MrMinnesotaMac This is well known problem with the sticky states. But as far as SD - you are their resident.
State that no income tax fail to tell you, and there are several around the country,
that the property taxes are higher, they have to makin e up that loss revenue somewhere!
I know for a fact that Texas is like that.
Don't care if I don't own property or 'live' there. This is for travelers.
I just want to be able purchase firearms but Illinois banned them so now I gotta play this game of loopholes by establishing my residency in a state that’s pro 2a so then I can purchase firearms again
@@allaansnackbar4269 Please do not mess up this program for travellers by considering this a 'loophole' to get around your crappy states laws.
@@nmead33 man I’m just one person and I’m a peasant it’s not gonna change anything but I do respect your wishes
@@allaansnackbar4269 I understand, but if you claim residency in SD, but live in IL, you are going to have other problems. Pretty sure IL requires you to change your residency to IL after living there for XX days, correct?
Where you actually live matters, most states have residency laws.
Not SD. Lol. I live in Mexico but have my virtual address, car registration and Drivers license in SD. I'm considered a resident there and I've only spent 1 day in that state

The only issue with SD is medical, you under 65 and have a med issue, you have to travel back to SD. the winters are horrible and it’s the number one state for tornadoes. Now understand why nobody lives there.
SD rocks
THIS IS JUST A PROMO HUSTLE-you do not need to use these service. UPS has best mailboxes-but others good too
A Virtual mailbox is excluded it says right on the site. UPS does offer boxes similar to a USPS post box but ensure what ever company you use is NOT considered a virtual address.

Guys like this are the reason why SD changed its laws. Now all these RVers are "moving" to TX. 🤣✌️
@haughtkarl-jx9vr So are you implying that since this video this is not the case any longer in SD?
Guess ethics are a priority any longer😐
Do you walk out of the DMV with the physical drivers license or do they send it to you?
Oh okay you answered this, thank you!
It's done. The gig is up with South Dakota. They just changed their voter registration requirements to prevent nomads from voting AND their tax laws regarding pmb remote workers who work for companies out of state-PMBs/POs are NOT valid anymore even though they don't collect state income tax.
Is there a better state residency for people living overseas?
Like. Like. Like. Like. Like.
🎉
Bravo

This video completely skipped the WHY piece......
He already said some no state income tax, cheap registration, dont need to keep US car insurance on a car that's overseas
I am considering it but I have home tax exemption in Florida and wonder if I get a SD lice se will I lose the exemption
you forgot to say anything about a bank account.
