Thank you for the work you did to provide us with this very valuable information.
What I did as an expat in Mexico is just buy a car in Mexico that's already Mexico-plated. Yes I'm supposed to pay taxes on it every year but I can come and go across the border with zero hassle, and there's no emissions or inspection burden in my Mexican state. In order to register it in your actual name you will need to go through the trouble of getting a Mexican drivers license though, which means you'll need to go through the trouble of getting legal residence.

Living in Oklahoma here and the housing market here over the last 7-8 years is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Homes that were bought for $130K in 2015 are now being sold for $590k. I’m talking about tiny, disgusting, poorly built 950 square foot shit boxes in quite mediocre neighborhoods. Then you’ve got Better, average sized homes in nicer neighborhoods that were $300K+ 10 years ago selling for $750k+ now. Wild times.

This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.

This ease of registration and license is one if the reasons i moved to SD. I used to be a truck driver for over a decade. While I was trucking my license was about to expire in 2019, so I called my state of CA, they said that they need: 1, 2 forms of proof of residence, my address at the time was my parents address. I cound do that. 2. They needed me to do my vehicle inspection and smog check every year. I was home once every 2 years. That didn't work for me.
Then i found that SD can get you residency and registration in 24 hours. Me and my ex drove to sd and got it all done in 24 hours. We got SD CDL and plates in hand.

It is also possible to get an SD driver's license after spending only ONE night in the state. I moved overseas (not Mexico) last September and swapped out my former state for an SD license after only spending one night there. You arrive in the afternoon, spend the night, and then go to the DMV in the morning (make an appt ahead of time - VERY important). Fill out the paperwork and you can walk out with a SD driver's license in hand. This will make you an SD resident from that moment. Depending on the state that you came from (laws vary from state to state), it is likely that if you have not spent more than 183 days of the current calendar year in your former state, you will be entitled to a full refund of all state taxes paid.
Just did my federal and state taxes for 2023 and listed SD as my residence. I filed a part-time state return with my former state and was already approved for a full refund of all state taxes paid. This is not legal or financial advice. It is just my personal experience and knowledge of how the work the system in your favor.

What is so wonderful and accomodating about South Dakota is #1, you get a human being on the phone!
#2 is that they allow one to legally register their car, regardless of its physical location (you are subject to local laws and Mexico doesn't care, as long as it is legally registered) under their "Vagabond Provision."
You are supposed to be insured where you drive and you cannot insure a non-registered car. This provision kindly allows us to insure our cars and drive with insurance, basically required everywhere.
Also, the importation of older cars is now available for certain non-luxury, recently titled cars.

I had read years ago Clay County had discontinued new out-of-state registrations, and that they would continue to honor and "grandfather" cars already with SD plates and allow them to re-register. I guess it was incorrect info or Clay County reversed their policy. What ex-pats in Mexico need to know is Mexico prohibits foreigners with permanent residency from driving foreign plated vehicles. Foreigners with temporary residency or 6 month tourist visas may drive foreign plated vehicles. The prohibition is almost never enforced. When Mexican police do detect this violation, they are more likely to solicit a bribe, than take official action. If a bribe is solicited and you decide to pay one, I recommend you say to the cop you only have $200 pesos (about $12 USD), and as long as the cop doesn't see that you have more, they are likely accept whatever you say you have. I know of a Mexican who paid as little as $50 pesos (about $3 USD) bribe. I'm amazed at how small a bribe Mexican police are willing to accept.
So, when foreigners gain permanent residency they must either nationalize their vehicle and pay a high import tax, or, sell it or stop driving it. Before, the vehicle had to be driven to the border, but I read somewhere that Mexico had relaxed that requirement.

LLCs are a passthrough entity if they are single member this means you are not taxed as a company you are taxed personally. So if you have an LLC in Wyoming or Delaware there are no taxes and you get the advantages of being in the US such as no withholding taxes. This is only really beneficial if you are a foreigner (non US citizen/resident) with a business that operates outside of the US and you live in a country with a terrotorial tax system like Costa Rica or Cayman Islands (not Mexico) then you pay no taxes. If you didn't have the LLC and had US income it would be subject to withholding taxes at 30%. Many people mess up their taxes going to Mexico because there are some grey areas on when you are temporary resident in Mexico and I'm sure most people set up an LLC to avoid paying any tax and they keep most of their money in a US personal account or account offshore or in another country neutral like Ireland or the UK.
Just be careful who is giving you information and speak to tax experts. That is where I aquired all my knowledge from. The tax expert I spoke to in Mexico said foreigners often commit tax fraud in Mexico and the government is clamping down on it. Qroo Paul is one of my favourite RUclipsrs for Mexico info!

You can't live in the US and have a vehicle registered in another state. If you listened to the video, he says Mexico.
If you live in California, you are required to have a CA driver license and registration within 20 days of becoming a resident. You will get stopped and given a citation. Every state has a law like that, it ranges from 10 days to 30 days.
Registration fees go towards maintaining the roadways. States look at it as you are driving a vehicle in their state, using their roads, putting wear on their roads, but paying to maintain another state's roads.
Most states classify a resident as ANYONE being in the states for a period longer than 20-30 days in a calendar year. You are also a resident if you work in the state, or accept benefits not offered to non-residents.
You won't be able to live in CA and get SD plates since you live and work in CA, its illegal, and is easy to figure out if stopped since your license will be in CA and vehicle plates in SD. You can't have one or the other.

When I lived in Connectishit, I paid for emissions tests, registration, AND property tax. Even for a not so new car it would still be in the hundreds of dollars every year. Some states even have vehicle inspections. That's a definite ripoff for consumers, and also a nice subsidy for the repair shops. Theyll say it's for safety but the worst part of inspections is that there's ZERO evidence that vehicle inspection states are any safer than non inspection states. At least I was never subjected to that.
When I moved to Tennessee, the registration was about the same, but no property tax, and no pesky emissions tests. In fact even house property taxes are roughly 10% of the taxes in Connectishit. Blue states tend to have the most expensive government fees and higher taxes. They also tend to regulate you to death.

We (Australia) have this too! My new van is registered in South Australia (less than 2M people in the whole state, 1.2M from them in state capital Adelaide) - no inspections, no separate CTP insurance (some basic one included in rego), no legal requirement to reside in the state, you only have to provide "garaging address" and have valid mail address (anywhere, mine is in NSW where I live) to receive fine notices and other stuff.
In my case I own land in SA, but it is not critical, moreover their system messed everything up and originally registered to address where I lived 15 years ago. Very convenient and much cheaper than in NSW, especially for light commercial vehicles.

In Louisiana, they used to use a letter in the center of your plate number to designate the State Police "Troup" (district) that you lived in... Don't know if they still use that though... What it meant though is that if you were traveling in the state, some little hick town cop would automatically know that you weren't a "local" just from looking at the plate and choose to "target you for further scrutiny"... ;) This was back before the days of the cops having computers in their cars or being able to quickly run the plates by calling the dispatchers...
It's really not that much different than the hotel taxes that cities enact... They figure that local people will not be staying at local hotels, so they are not taxing their residents (i.e. those who actually vote for them)... One of the problems with California is vehicles. I took a one year job in Indiana. Drove my California car there and registered it there. Then when I returned I had to pay for that year for California plate registration plus a fine for not registering it that year or pay a compliance assessment fee for for bringing in a non California vehicle.
The real insult was the car was originally sold as new in California. I guess Mexico also would be too convenient to cruise between them for extended periods.
It turned out that is was cheaper to store the California car & pay the annual car tax. Buy a Indiana car and sell it in Indiana.
So how did California get around interstate commerce? Well for some reason I have a problem finding out when interstate tariffs were declared illegal as part of early U S constitution law.
But I have a feeling it was connected with the commerce regulation of using tariffs to move household goods from state to state.
I guess keeping are cars in a garages makes them household goods? That precedence has spread to other states like Michigan.
Well I guess South Dakota has found a way to cash in other other states need for mo money.
I don't think a motor cycle would be treated any different. Unless it does not have a plate or ever had a plate. But given time time the legislature will find a way to tax more.
