    Mitochondria is called powerhouse of cell because it generates ATP(adenosine triphosphate) that is the fuel for all metabolic activities. Therefore provides energy to the cell to carry out functions. It is a site for cellular respiration

  • @peters972
    @peters972 2 года назад +9

    They have little turbines (literally atomic scale) that are driven by protons that power little atomic “presses” that force an extra phosphate onto adenosine di-phosphate turning it into Adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP). ATP can power cellular processes since they have this potential to release the extra phosphate providing energy like a little battery. To release the energy, other tiny machines trigger them, like your mum when you tell her you lost your calculator. The ADP then comes back to the mitochondria to be reloaded. I suppose that’s why it is say that the mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell. Another interesting point is that they were once cells themselves, but found their way into the cell and were kind of demoted to organelles specializing in ATP loading. They lost their ability to replicate on their own and have a super limited set of genes of their own mainly just for repair and replacement of the powerhouse machinery.

    'Sites of cellular respiration' ...
    ... appreciate that.
    A little two generalized though:
    'Sugar and oxygen' combined to produced ATP' ?
    How about: Pyruvate feeds into Citric Acid Cycle in the matrix to produce sugar metabolism byproducts NADH and FADH2. These donate electrons to protein complexes embedded in the inner membrane (cristae), that via redox-centers on these macromolecules, serve as the energy to drive both proton pumping into the inter-membrane space as well as driving the electron transport chain across the bi-layer. The last protein complex in the chain utilizes oxygen as the final electron acceptor to ramp up proton pumping, enhancing the proton gradient either side of the inner membrane. Proton flow through the gradient and membrane then drives the ATP Synthase embedded 'turbine' to synthesize energy-rich ATP within the matrix from (the energy-depleted) ADP.
    In summary: Electron flow and a proton-gradient drives the synthesis system that produces the cell's energy-rich molecule ATP. Oxygen is what facilitates putting energy production on steroids in a
    eukaryotic system. Citric acid cycle (sugar) byproducts from within the matrix donate electrons to initiate the electron-transport flow mechanism that ultimately allows for maintaining and making energetic use of the proton gradient.
    ... Harvard animations, narrative by Robert Lu, recommended - and got me this far.
