    Tons of good memories associated with this watch. Walking around with my Sony WM-F10 listening to the Miami Vice soundtrack, wearing my checkerboard Vans & parachute pants, chewing my Big League Chew mixed with Pop Rocks and my new G-Shock on my wrist. Ahhh the 80's were a magical time!

    I have this classic square GSHOCK as well.
    This is a must have, if your into GSHOCK collection.
    For me this symbolizes the origin of all GSHOCKS. “It’s the mother of all GSHOCK”.
    This model was my first ever watch, back in the early 90’s, it’s a gift from my Aunt who lives in Japan back then.
    It really brings back my childhood memories having it.
    Thanks for sharing this one too Doug.👌

    I wouldn't agree that the 4 screw back plate has a greater chance of allowing debris inside the watch. I would believe that the screw case back will be slightly more water resistant due to the inherent advantage of the design, even though both are rated 200M. The individual screws will tend to cause wear to the threading in the case each time you remove and re-install the back plate, so the screw case back has a strong advantage there. Plus, an all stainless steel case is much more rugged.

    Nice review, really like these 5000-5600 series with the screwbacks. I got mine in HK from Japanese Casio importers last year for about US$390. It's good, but I think I would rather have a 5000C!!

    I put my Gshock under a lamp to charge the little solar pannel. It got to close to the light bulb and was to hot to touch. The display was all black. I let it cool off for 10 minutes. It started back up and had the right time!

    It's amazing how many owners of the Gw 5000 , have the Dw 5600c? I guess once a square owner always a square owner!
    I would love casio to bring out the Dw 5600e with a stainless steel case! Now that would be a nodd to the 5600c ' speed' watch? I believe it would be a winner for them? What is annoying is that casio stop selling spares for their older models! But anyway, the Gw 5000 is as good to the 5000c of 1983 as we are going to get, at this time!

    • @DougFNJ
      @DougFNJ  Год назад +1

      The old classic square and its modern updated version. I always have to own both. The 5600e was basically a 5600c with the 4 screws. The 5000c and 5000cu is basically that upgraded 5600e.

  • @muCephei_
    @muCephei_ 7 лет назад +1

    Been eyeing this one but leaning more towards GWM5610. I think the display on the GWM5610 sits closer and it's 3x cheaper. The only reason the GW5000 is expensive is because of the DLC coating pretty much. Resin strap is nicer but not significantly. But I still can't seem to justify spending $120 on it because my F91W is pretty awesome and it's only $10

    • @DougFNJ
      @DougFNJ  7 лет назад +2

      The straps are much softer than resin on 5610, more like a soft rubber. The DLC is pretty sharp too, under the bezel the entire steel case is that shiny black dlc finish. The screwback is the bonus too. Both are great watches, and you get what you pay for on either.

    Excellent watch review. I imagine though that the DLC coating on the caseback would drive the price of quite a bit? Anyways, I was wondering if you had seen the R.A.F. • @Rick-ve5lx

    The buttons are very recessed and hard spring pressure to press plus the auto backlight was a bit unreliable. Apart from that it was a beautiful watch but I sold mine. There is no point in having a G-shock that's too valuable to wear without fear of scratching.

    • @DerpEye
      @DerpEye 4 года назад +1

      Too valuable? I did not wear mine at work (but then again i'm a mechanic), gw5610 for that. But plenty of wrist time otherwise. I also own several mechanical expensive watches, should i get rid of them? How about the new GMW-B5000 that costs almost double the one in this video?
      The good thing about gshocks is that you can get a new resin and strap for 25 bucks and it's as good as new.

  • @crezzwell
    @crezzwell 7 лет назад +6

    I like this watch, I've had a 5600E and a 5610, but it's difficult to justify why this 5000 model should be 300 pounds. Just because it has a screw back, that alone should not increase the price to 200 pounds more than a 5610.

    • @DougFNJ
      @DougFNJ  7 лет назад +3

      Thanks for the comment. The cost is the DLC scratch resistant coating they use for the finish, plus the straps are not the typical resin they used on the other squares, this is a very comfortable rubber strap. Expensive, yes, It's the best of the series they made.

    • @crezzwell
      @crezzwell 7 лет назад +1

      Excellent, thanks Doug, I really enjoy your watch reviews and you know your stuff, and I agree it does look the best of the squares. I might spoil myself one day. Take care, and best wishes from Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK.

    This is a great review. I just bought this watch on Amazon reseller. The fit and finish is top notch and the diamond coating finish and jaxa screw back is rare for a modern G Shock and reminds me of my 25 year DW-5600C. Your DW looks new. Is that an original bezel and strap?

    i find it funny that everyone says you can pick squares up at walmart the one i work at has never had them so i drove to 4 different stores looking for one because i get a discount and none of them had any. went to the first Target and they had 2 but they were hidden way back on the shelf. i wish more places carried these watches because they are soo much better than those big fat ugly G Shocks that are made for fashion. i didn't even know these square G's existed until a few weeks back. they are clearly the better watch that really serves a purpose

      John Bucher Agree! This is one weakness most of the Solar Gs have. The infuriating thing is that there do exist Solar Gs with decent alarm volume that can wake up a sleeping person. The Mudman G-9000, and Rescue GW-7900 models come to mind. Maybe they should upgrade all the Gs to have vibration alarms. Of course, the solar ones might need bigger batteries for that.

    Es el que deseo desde 1999 y aquí en mi país, ya no existe, la cubierta de acero es de tornillos, no es el original que conocí en 1982.

    I don't like the atomic geez because they're thinner than the standard battery variety.

      I dont know about that, I have Atomic watches that are thicker and some thinner. Depends on the model.

    Can some help me, my 20 year 1995 G Shock DW6900 has died. It has wen't through my birth and childhood and used by my family. For years it was handed down and I had serviced it but the my watch provider ran out of town after his business closed. After that I began to do battery changing myself band and bezel and other repairs so it looks box condition I recall 4 overhauls in 2 decades. Anyway one morning I woke up picked it up to look at the time and it completely bank and function stopped working. So I opened it up and did attempts of watch CPR by gentle battery changes. It died just like that. It seems that the module has reached its age. My local watch dealership had an inspection and said its a 3230 module has a defect as he sells a similar G6900 which is way newer larger but samer anatomy. But did not have the replacing parts as the watch is over his 10 - 15 year policy.
    He told me maybe Casio could repair it but under special reasons rare circumstances, most vintage can be repaired but they can take up to many weeks even a months. They do not accept deliberate damage but only defects or unless if its covered by G Shock Warranty Card and that only 3 years. So I called Casio but yet I have not got through to Repair Service. Casio usually accept up to 6 and 7 years old watches and repaired before 10 working days, 30 year old watches can be been apparently repaired as the popular (ONLY) DW modes like the DW5000 (first G) is from 1983 can expect its age to die as its decades older. Most of the newer watches don't really break up to 10 years. Has anyone had a watch repaired by Casio Repair that was 20+ Years?
