- Graphing Linear Functions by Finding X and Y Intercepts
In this video, I show how to graph a linear function by finding its x-intercept and y-intercept. This is one of the foundational techniques for graphing linear equations and can help you understand the visual representation of the function's behavior. By substituting 0 for either x or y, we can find these intercepts and plot the graph. I work through two complete examples to illustrate the process, breaking down each step for clarity. If you're new to graphing or looking for a refresher on finding intercepts, this video is for you!
What You Will Learn:
The basic concept of finding x and y intercepts of a linear function.
Step-by-step instructions on how to substitute values to find intercepts.
How to plot a linear function using its intercepts.
Visual examples that help deepen your understanding of the intercepts and their role in graphing.

10 Years after this was posted and it still is saving many lives XD
Zane XD period
@Zane yes
hey lol
Yes
its 13 now lmfao
I love the fact that i can pause Patrick if i want to just take everything I'm looking at into perspective for a second. I can also rewind Patrick if i need to hear something again or fast forward Patrick if i already know what hes talking about. Why can't i do that in school?!?!
excellent! glad i was able to help!
and do not be scared... math is hard for EVERYONE, no matter what they say : )
I'm in college and an A student, but math this semester is harder then ever. I get help from this site when it comes to math. This is a wonderful feeling! Thanks for your video's.
Happy I could help. Come back any time
+patrickJMT thank u u made so much easier !!!!
+TheNaruto0923 Yeah!!me too im in gr. 8 and its our lesson...
+Ashley Horan same
+TheNaruto0923 Yeah , they're going to rewind these simple things back in college for refreshment . So , better not forget it :D
I learned more from this dude in 8 minutes than my math teacher in a 30 minute zoom session
Same HAHA
Bro legit
4 years ago I started studying for an engineering degree.. After a while I knew it wasn't for me and so I changed my direction and now I am a medical student...
One of the absolutely wonderful memories I have of that time is when I watch one of your videos and fully understand a subject I was struggling with...
Even though I didn't carry on with that direction... but I think I will always remember how amazing your explanation is...
Thank you.. I hope you are doing well
konsi uni m hua
@@sikyfushvanti3605 I'm sorry I didn't understand
you just taught something in 8 minuets that my math teacher couldn't teach me in an hour and a half. props ^^
2019! you’re still saving lives . thanks 💕
2021 and its still saving lives
2024 and still saving lives
Taking a finite math course on line. That, in and of itself, is challenging. The accompanying text doesn't provide enough examples to help grasp this. This tutorial has indeed been a great help. Thanks!
I'm a freshman and I'm still watching this in 2019!❤
@Glowbify well, you can add or subtract things to put it in the same form, but that is not needed. just plug in x = 0 and solve for y. plug in y=0 and then solve for x.
I really like how you explained it more in details ...i got a huge understanding of what you were trying say ..
@TheRochelleJ my pleasure
I'm a uni student and my maths subject is "Fundamentals in Mathematics" (you know, just the basics). And i have been absent in maths for 6 months before going to uni, doing nothing, and i didnt prepare. And i lost most of my knowlege on these basicsand my exam's on Monday. But when i looked through your video, it was very helpful. Man, ur teaching is much clearer than my lecturer. I hope to learn on almost evrythin i study by just watching ur vids FAST. thanks dude =)
@JoanneRuth13 well, when you write the equation in y = mx + b form, that is correct
in usa, algebra starts around grade 7 or 8 and then you use it for as long as you are taking math classes!
we need more people like this i swear... my teacher gets pissed off if we ask her any question!
After 8 years of college finishing up grad school you just out performed 9 math teachers i've had along the way in one youtube video. Gratz
@Glowbify you can use whatever method you want. did you try using this method on your example?
Thanks so much. I'm a ninth grader and you are nearby the best math teacher ever. They need more like you.
You've opened my eyes to what I've not understood for years!!!!!! adding u to favs!
Made everything clear! Thanks for this! I hope you get excited every time you make tutorials because its a big help for us students!
Who is not going to extra math lessons today? ME!
Thank you! Helped me so much :)
Holy crap you make so much sense unlike my teacher. You get directly to the point!! TY SO MUCH!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
you helped me to get an A on my math quiz
How is it now....6 years later..do you remember this comment
thank you for making all these videos for us who are struggling with math. you have explained all the things clearly and again thank you coz im learning !!!
This helped me out so much more than my teacher did. Thank you for making this!
2020 and you still are saving people!! 🥳
@AustinMichaelHauck no problem, glad i could help : )
Well done, calm, smooth, accurate delivery.
@LLOORREENNN2 it is called function notation
thank you so much, my lazy teacher didn't even explain this and we got math questions on it. this helped so much. subbed.
Genius! Many have tried to teach me this, including my Algebra text book, and they all failed. I finally understand this. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!! I could pass Compass test at college!!!!! Your videos helped me a lot!!!!!
man 6th grade math is HARD but this guy is like an optimized genie! this guy teaches more in 8 minutes than my teacher in a full HOUR
no fraction examples? :(
thanks so much, when my teacher explained this i didn't understand it one bit, but you made it very clear and easy to understand. again thanks so so much.
yea! no problem!
I am trying to solve some questions but I don't know how to start. The question is: Find the slope and y-intercept of the graph of the linear equation. Then write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form.
All it gives me is a graph, it shows clearly that the line passes through -2 on the y intercept line and the travels up into the positive . How do I find the slope? and is the y int just the -2? How do I write the equation? Your videos basically saved my life (AKA my math grade) last year! They are so helpful! Thank you!
glad it helped :) lots of algebra videos floating around on my channel if you need any more examples!
yes, i am thought about doing some fun stuff, but have not got around to it just yet : )
a million things i still want to discuss
Helped me study for my test. Keep up the good work
Thank YOU!!! Without this video I would have totally flunked my Algebra 1 test and have to go to the reg. class
thanks for the kind words! :)
Thank you lots man!! I've been having trouble with this sense I started 9th grade and we are approaching the end of the semester and I'm finally getting the hang of this because of this video.
Same! My teacher is terrible. He yells at us for asking questions
+Rodrick Heffley yeah! And he gets so disappointed. Seriously, over half the grade is failing his stupid class. It's miracle I have a C
@patickJMT thank you so much for making these videos, my math teacher takes forever to do what you do in lesst than 10 mins
you are welcome!
This has helped me when I had no where else to go and tutors have me waiting in line! I've referred you to my classmates!
Your tutorials have been helping very much. Thank you!!!!
Thanks, I finally got it and I didn't even had to finish watching the video to get the answer correct. THIS IS GREAT (:
thank you so much! you're a way better teacher than my algebra teacher is. :)
This actualy works. :) I was looking into a day before my regents for geometry and its explianed to me better the formulas better than my geometry teacher could in the 10 months i spent in his class
@ViviAmour ha ;) i had really good ones, and really less-than-good ones too
This helped me so much! Math was kicking my butt and this cleared everything up!
I,v never liked maths, to make it worst i get scared when given to graph. After watching this video, it added meaning to things i,v long tried knowing. Thanks a lot for the help,it was helpful.
Just helped me with 75% this deserves a smiley face ( =D) of approval and a like.
thank you very much i used to think i wud never b able to sort this kind of quiz so simply thanx to ur video i am able to do tht please keep doing wht your doing brutha. thanx!
Thank you very much for these very helpful math tutorials
Okay, this just saved my life, and my math test tomorrow. Thanks heaps!
Dude u the man you are just amazing! I wish you were my teacher anyone else
@Isabellaandlife if youre solving for y, then just divide both sides by 3. if solving for x, bring y to the other side, and x to one side, then divide.
Wow, that really helped! I have my math final tomorrow and I've been good all semester on almost everything, but the graphing has been giving me fits. Our exam is not accumulative, so there will be a lot of graphing on it since that is the last section we covered. This really did help a lot, hopefully I will be able to carry what I learned here to the exam. Thanks for the clarity!
Thank you so much ♡
Thanks! This will really help me in my exam tomorrow
Thanks, you make it sound so easy. I'll look for more of your videos, hope you have something on inequalities.
is it me, or are you the best teacher in the whole world? specifically, the youtube world? lol
Wow that helped so much >.< I wish you were my math college professor. The one I'm stuck with rushes things and is a scatter brain.
hey patrick...just wanted to let you know on the daily quiz i went from being the second worst in my class to the second best...thanks to your vids
this you could not do, as the only intercept is at the origin... (0,0) so that only yields one point on the line.
you could also let x=1, so as a result, y=1, so that another point on the line would be (1,1) and now you have two points
Thanks so much. Just got moved to maths A and they had already stated on this subject. So it's good I can catch up with this vid
first 2 minutes helped me, youre 10 times better than my teacher
THANK YOU
SO MUCH
YOU HAVE NO IDEA
this made it so easy for me to understand
the text book and other online sites confused me.
THANKYOU! =]
ya! that is correct! plug in x = 0, and only 7/4 remains!
REALLY HELPED ON MY HOMEWORK MATH
@izzypop3000 you plug in y = 0 and you are done, there is nothing to do in that case cause you get x = 0.
@musicisme4eva to an angel from the heavens
soooo damnnnnn helpfullllll man u explain so well my teacher could never explain this way even if she tries in a million years
Great Vid! just a question why did you put 8/3 on that part of the graph?
Thats so easy, have not done maths in years, goin back to college and trying to remember it all, thats great, just have to learn quadratic functions now, simultaneous are ok 2. Cheers for you help dood!
my pleasure
thx so much!! u saved my butt for my math test!!
@andrescaraudio the revolution will not be televised.
it will be done on the internet.
thanks so much, this has helped me understood what my lecture was trying to teach, you are awsome.
@MissKKarls then you watch a video about graph quadratics
Thank You !
saved my life!
Your 7 years older....
Have u noticed that smart people are left handed? Anyways thanks a lot dude. My teacher doesn't have time to answer our questions and this is a really good method. I definitely am about to sub. I'm also going to use this method on tmrws hw. Thx!
:)
Strange... I only know dumb left handed people. I guess It's just because *those two things are not related to each other in the slightest*.
I'm sick of people drawing lines like that.
Now, I don't care if your comment is flamebait, but this sort of statement as has really annoyed me for a long time. People tend to cling to assumptions like that and become elitist cunts.
jonsuttelade i meant to say left handed people are smart. And it's just a compliment. It was just a way to say that he was smart. Jesus. People now a days take everything wayyy to seriously.
k
Im left handed and (kinda) smart :D but im too lazy
It does matter if you are left or right handed, you can look it up but it has something to do with the right side of your brain is controlling the left side of your body and the left brainside is controlling the right side of your body, if you are left handed your brain is used mostly in the right side and the left side, mostly for creativity, imagination... Is free to think about all of that, im not a good explainer but i think you get the idea ;)
You're a better teacher than my teacher...
THANK YOU! YOU MADE THIS SO EASY FOR ME!
Thanks dude you helped heepsss. My math teacher cant teach as well as you.. Thank you again..
Am I the only seventh grader who is taking these things at the age of twelve??
EDIT:: YES HELLO Y'ALL I'm in eight grade now and math hasn't gotten easier hELP Me
+Raven BlackBird no
ok whew
I'm taking it too, but my teacher doesn't teach us very well.
+Raven BlackBird I am, honors classes
+Raven BlackBird i am in seventh grade and i sit next to my best friend but our math teacher sucks and i literally have to watch youtube videos to understand
Thanx god I kno how 2 do this now because of u I'm 100% sure u should b my teacher u made this easy as 1 2 3
the is the best turorial video to watch... awesom!
Thanksss I really couldn't understand in class but your video helped me a lottttt!!!!XD also a 7th grader!!! Thankssss!!!!!
Thanks!, you can be my math teacher! mybrother is always lik e goto patrickJMT i was like wtf?! but now i see! Thanks again
thank you, you are a better teacher, than my algebra teacher, =P
I have a decent teacher, but compared to you ... You're just amazing! :o I actually understand this now. :) Perfect.
Great idea , lot of info and clear details
Thanks bro nice video👍
According to my view of point this video is great it can help you in finding the x and y intercept.
just use the cover-up method. x & y= 0. if you have 2x+4y=12, cover 2x, and solve for y. divide 4 to each side. do the same for x. i love my algebra teacher :D
