I love this review thank you for your hard work testing this product thanks for not letting companies control you, please do more with portable speakers no one has an unbiased and detailed videos like you
The Soundbox XL Ultra does absolutely not need a handle. It's not heavy and it's an indoor speaker, you're not going to carry it around much anyway. And handles make many speakers look ugly imho. Doss states a frequency spectrum of 35 Hz - 25 kHz for the XL Ultra which is in fact quite the opposite of limited...
Thanks, but my measurements show anything but that frequency response capability. It drops off like a rock below 100 hz, as would be expected with such small drivers. Plus I keep dropping mine - damn, no handle.
@@scientificaudiophile Fair enough but do you know any other comparable speaker with a wider frequency range? And at the same price? It does sound a bit mids-heavy with very subtle deep and clean bass imo...
I have the smaller Doss sound box plus, it could do with a bit more upper midrange for violins ect, but i mainly use it for speech, of which, it does produce a very comfortable almost old valve radio sound. And it does go loud and clear with music, has 2ch. Stereo, good battery life too. At £46 is great value.
Are you measuring in-room? I got one for hotel room use w/ a Fire stick. Gets me a pretty nice little travel entertainment system for binge-watching TV. I ran a frequency sweep & got pretty decent bass down to 80Hz. Not great, but pretty good for the size & price. That was in-room, up against the wall, so I'm wondering if you just weren't getting anything off the port. I did see the dip at 200, - probably the port/midrange handoff - and the dropoff at 9k. However, running a spectrum analyzer with some Mannheim steamroller, I was seeing a lot of response right up to 12kHz. I think it was just mastered super hot - other tracks didn't display this - so I suspect it's possible to EQ a little more out of it at the top end. Anyway, it's good for TV dramas. And pays for itself in one evening not spent in the hotel bar.
The frequency response of the speaker is terrible compared to most that I've seen on RTings. The tribet storm blast I got for 150 and it's like maybe 50 to 18?
No highs, no lows... must be a "Vine Customer Review (What's this?)" In the last two reviews, you strayed from the 600-hour required and reference burn period. Then I remembered you have super hearing that you can adjust to the actual hours of burn-in, even if it is less. Good to know you have that amazing ability... I watched this video after watching a reviewer bring up "Korean blood" when talking about the electronics and a "British sound" when describing, huh, British-made speakers... I hope the former is not some sort of ritual, and the latter may have to do with tea... Has anybody heard the difference between the Artic Sound vs the Antarctic Sound? There is a difference in the "teeth-chattering" I was born in the tropics, so I have the uncanny ability to tell that difference... 🥶🥶 Now, seriously, thank you for such a level-headed review. It is nothing short of amazing how many "portable" speakers are in the market without a handle. Is "Hemlock" still in time-out? (Misspelled on purpose... Google it)
You need to change your camera angle when recording. It looks like you're recording from a lower angle, which is the worst possible angle to record yourself in a commentary. It just looks weird or creepy.
I've own Bose, JBl, and other small bluetooth speakers that claim that you can link two speakers together but wasn't able to verify those claims with any speakers. How do you link up two speakers if the device you have your music on (i.e. phone, tablet, etc.) is connected to one speaker and switches, disconnect from one device to pair and connect to another device. How do you link up two speakers and why doesn't anyone show this linkage of two speakers in their reviews? Many speakers make this claim but I'm yet to see it be truthful. For all those "reviewing" products why are you sleeping on testing out the product claim of linking 2 speakers?
I have the upgrade version plug it into the Internet and the logo will magically change to 11. The only problem after that update it will only play the soundtrack from Spinal Tap
The best Bluetooth speaker I've had is the Tribit StormBox Micro 2, which right now is going for $48 on Amazon. It's not a boombox type but small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. I just got it to mostly use in the bathroom when I shower and shave, but I am amazed at how good such a little thing can sound. I also have a pair of diminutive Apple HomePod Minis that sound decent for the size but I quit using them because Siri is a total retard and destroys the whole experience of music enjoyment. Modern audio technology has really advanced over the years.
@ I bought one and just got it in. Looks great. And a recessed handle is a good idea, but it might add to the bulk of the speaker. It’s a pretty large speaker already.
I wasn't fed this video or the past 5 as a subscriber!? What the. You might have enemies in high places my man, messing up feeds 😮 I blame the "Passion For Audio" guy. His arrogance leads me straight to the Dramamine. Any thoughts on PS Audio out of Boulder? Is their equipment that high quality for the prices? Damn, that video that would be great.
Very hard to define half volume. Is that 50% rotation of the volume control? If so, the volume pot should be logarithmic. So, 50% rotation is probably only 20% volume. That also implies that 100% rotation is clean unclipped sound. That also implies that it's not a multi turn pot or a shaft encoded type where almost any kind of law is possible, log or linear or something in-between! On a hot day it will probably play longer than on a cold day. Batteries don't like cold!! However, on a cold day you probably won't want it to play to long outside because it is cold. Most likely it's just sales Doss, best taken with a pinch of salt. Like my comments! PS. If you want a speaker that's all boom and tizz with no midrange, try the Edifier D12. The exact opposite to this speaker.
I made a stereo years ago to take on camping trips. Boom-box's were either rubbish or expensive. There's so much choice now, of products that would fulfil that role.
FFs why would anyone need one of these noise generators on a camping trip of all places ? Don't do it near my tent or within my hearing when I'm out tryng to enjoy the peace and quiet away from the daily rabble of noise and riff-raff.......Not happy chappy........ thanks !
@@JohnTruth-h5f We made friends with some Italians in Greece because of our shared musical taste, when we overheard them playing a tape unit. It was a young-person's holiday, so the music was not Diane Bish.
The previous XL went to 40Hz at medium volumes, Ultra not hitting that or better? Dont buy it. I'll pick this up and test for myself and post the video.
Wot a clown. Encouraging others to go about ignoring the right of others to peace and quiet in the outside world. If you act like this and evoke a violent response exercising this anti-social attitude....don't say I didn't warn yah, will yah ?

How does it sound if I leave it in the box so that I can use the box's handle ?
It Dossn't
😂
I'm angry it doesn't turn into a lamp too

Chris I bought doss before and they are alright for background music outside, not the worst😊
I was hoping that you would rate it "A picnic basket and a pitcher of lemonade".
That would have been appropriate.

Your review is very fair.
Like a Boxed Wine without a carry handle ... what's the point?
What would you recommend for a plug in home blue tooth speaker for $500 or less? Just something to put in the corner of the room and sound good.
Absolutely yes.

I'm trying to work Helmholtz in. He has a far busier social life than I do. Thanks for the comment, and I'll research Antarctic sound now.

I have had the the DOSS Soundbox XL for years now. Does great. Yet... compared to the Anker Soundcore Motion Boom Plus... not even JBL can hang.

Still not happy, but the JBL Authentics 300, if it's priced under $300
Thanks! Have you heard the Soundcore x600?
No

The enclosure looks like it has enough volume to play down to 100-150Hz. Must be a cost factor.
