Iconic or hyper-competent characters like Sherlock Holmes or James Bond do not usually have a character arc and don't change much. Their high level skills and drive is what makes them fun to watch. Therefore, they need to be pitted against villains who are also hypercompetent, preferably in a skill that counteracts with the hero. Watching an overpowered character crush a gang of weak mooks is boring. Watching two geniuses try to plan, strategize and one up each other is more enjoyable but difficult to write.
I don’t think it’s wrong to extrapolate from different stories but when they are just blatantly copying a story and or making a generic story with uninteresting characters that are just overpowered for no reason that’s an actual problem. It feels like everyone of these guys just wanna make characters like naruto and gojo without all the character development and depth.
It's a shame to see these cookie cutter exorcist series come out one after another, like who is greenlighting all these series one after another. It's sad to see these manga come out when the exorcist genre is already oversaturated in the magazine just to be cancelled and replaced by another exorcist series that tries to stand out by being slightly different than the last cookie cutter exorcist series.
I think making a character like a real life villain is better than a demon but they do what they want. I think being unique is a + with the manga standard. That way you stand out
Just you wait until we find out that this Demon Lord is by far the weakest one and the MC has to do some training to defeat the other Demon Lords, one stronger than the other. Oh boy what a story!
i heard somewhere that in japanese folklore demons arent seen in the same way in christianity theyre seen as simple spirits that exist sometimes or sm (like in spirited away) but ill still say its bad to show such twisted forces of nature in a neutral light
I only read old manga for a reason stuff from the 70s to early 2000s. I agree the manga industry at least in shonen jump is getting so stale and the series are so lame.
I'm going to push back a little and say that OP/ perfect characters being unrelatable, I believe, is the deeper lie. It really bugs me that this gets spread as legit storytelling advice. You can relate to the positive aspects of the character. Even though we all fall short, Generally, everyone wants to be good and do good Jesus is the ultimate, real world example of the perfect OP protagonist. The *true* protagonist So speaking of demons, if they can spread the the lie "only flawed characters are relatable"... what would that do the mind of a person who takes in this terrible writing advice in light of Jesus? What makes an OP character fall flat is what you touched on in your review of this manga: Lack of character, lack of objectively right morals and no struggle to persevere In the OP characters' case, the struggle would be to maintain their moral upright standing in the face of temptation and moral dilemmas
