      all lock boxes are completely pointless against theft if you can't bolt or chain them down to concrete. they have all the time in the world to crack these open once they take it with them so it doesn't matter how hard they are to open. these are useful for storing things you don't want burned up in a fire. they work by the plastic melting together while the powdery white substance protects the inner liner from disintegrating.

    This thing is it to protect papers from fire, that's all that matters. I have one that's rated for fire and flood protection to store papers. I don't even use the lock, just the external latches.

      In the heat of a fire the material will expand and seal the safe, at least that is the theory behind these type safes.

    • @jptrainor
      @jptrainor 7 лет назад +9

      It would be interesting to see a review of a real fire test and to see what the case is filled with. When I researched pre-purchase it was a gel type material that absorbs the heat. If it is only fire, and not water rated, it may be that a super tight, latched, seal is not necessary.

    • @willsmith2161
      @willsmith2161 5 лет назад +2

      Most safes have a 1-3 hour fire rating. Fires can get around 1,400° when engulfed. Average fire can take 6-24 hours extinguish by a fire dept. Paper can start combustion from extreme heat alone. Math says your stuff is burnt toast.

    I can say from experience these lockboxes are actually rather resistant to fire, so I do keep smaller things that I would not want burned in them (like family photos), but not things like birth certificates or those sorts of documents in them. For those items I use a real safe that's bolted to the floor.

  • @gwarrichmond6232
    @gwarrichmond6232 2 года назад +2

    I ended up getting 8 of these safes for free when a family member passed. I found that 1 key fit all the safes. I had a bag of keys all marked sentry so I know the locks were all factory. I bolted 1 down in a gun safe, for just a little extra protection for my most valuable items, not saying much, but better than nothing I guess.
    Great video, I wish you still did reviews - 👍🏼

    The full size (hanging file folder capable) safes a fairly good alternative if you secure them from "walking away". For example, many people I know who don't have thousands of dollars invested in guns bought a steel gun "cabinet" which is bolted to the floor of a closet. A full size sentry inside does a pretty good job. There are definitely better alternatives but much more costly.

    This product is really for keeping important documents safe from fire and water damage. Several reviews of these features on RUclips show that this product is great for that use. It’s not meant to be burglar resistant, but there are very few safes that actually are resistant for more than 15 minutes. For under $50, this is a good product to store titles, wills, birth certificates, and passports.

    I found one with the key in it dumpster diving. It was bigger than the one in your video though. I checked the inside to make sure it didn’t have anything illegal in it then I made sure it worked before taking it home. I figured I could hide it in the house and keep a few documents in it just in case the house ever caught fire. After seeing a friends house burn down I saw the importance of a small fire proof safe but I haven’t had the money to buy one yet.

    I have the large version of this one that I put my documents in and then it goes into my gun safe. It boosts the fire protection of my documents, my safe already has a one hour fire rating at 1400 degrees fahrenheit, add the rating of this safe at 1550 degrees for half an hour and I have no doubt that even if my house burns to the ground my documents will be safe. I do think though there are other options that do this same thing, I got mine on clearance for 15 dollars so It was well worth it for me.

    I have had one only for the fire rating. When I had a small fire, it did the job it was designed for. However because it melted to itself I did need a stronger hammer and chisel to open it. My documents were still perfectly viable and undamaged by fire and water. But that is the Only reason I had it.

    doing some damage that will be noticeable.
    A thief will gram the whole thing and run.
    A real safe is something that can be bolted in place, and with a much better locking device.

    If you actually need this then get a safe deposit box at your bank. For most people it's free and full-proof. These safes are gimmicks at best. The simple fact that it's easily portable defeats the purpose of it. IMO the best place to "hide" things in your home is in hidden hatches, hidden floors, or just in places where no one will look. You're better off storing valuables above your upper cabinets behind the crown than in most safes.

      Watch the lockpickinglawyer. He takes one of their bigger ones and just cuts the front off with a circular saw. They are just cheap thin sheet metal filled with flame retardant and a cuby for your stuff. Complete junk.

    I'm thinking, maybe using the $20 for toilet paper may have been a more effective use of the money.

    People are saying get this safe as a decoy save your money you can buy realistic fake prop money and have a few hundred dollars just sitting on your night stand.

    I have one similar to that one that works great as a safe place to keep my medications out of the hands of anyone who should't be in there. I bought it when all my kids had friends over and we had a couple of different cleaning ladies coming in. Can it be defeated with a screwdriver? Yes. Will it protect from fire or a drop onto concrete? No. Works great for what I bought it for though.

    I actually own a file safe version of that, and that is all I keep in it, paper work I don't want to lose in case of fire. I haven't even bothered to lock it in I don't know how long now.

    And chest like safe that can be picked up is a no go unless you using it to keep out of the hands of kids it fine but I wouldn’t put money or valuables in it.

    I have had one of those for a very long time. It is not a safe, it is a fire box. Put your important papers like mortgage, insurance, birth certificates and car titles in it. My intention was that it would survive a fire, or I could even grab it pretty quickly and get it out. If you are trying to use it as a safe, the two crosses in the bottom of the box allow you to drill thru it and screw it down. They have gotten cheaper over the years as mine is not constructed as poorly as that one seems to be.

    1. It's a wafer lock easy to pick
    2. It can easily break
    3. It's plastic
    4. Don't get security products from hardware stores because most of them suck
    5. Don't get hyper tough
    6. Master lock sucks Don't believe people who tell you there good locks
    7. Also don't use Amazon to rely on security Amazon choice also sucks so don't use that
    8. If you don't believe me test these out ur self it's true

      Yes! My thought exactly.
      Put something in the safe that a thief will take. Paint it with poison ivy. (Put a "conspicuous" warning about poison ivy in the safe, for legal reasons.)
