    I used to sing this in my car coming home from work in the late 1970's. Stuck in traffic I would look to my left and right and sing those famous words. Memories I tell you, nothing like music to take you back to a time and place. Thanks.

    I don't know why it's taken me all these years to hear the parallel between this and "Mama Told Me Not To Come." I mean you could almost mix them - "clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, mana told me not to come..."

  • @mikecaetano
    @mikecaetano 12 дней назад +9

    Your take on the lyrics sounds right to me. Wikipedia says "Rafferty's lyrics are a dismissive tale of a music industry cocktail party (e.g., the clowns and jokers would be all the music executives and hangers on), written and performed as a parody of Bob Dylan's style." Notably, the lyrics echo the themes of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower", at least before Jimi Hendrix gave them a cosmic reframing.

    Love this song. Stealers Wheel was the Scottish folk rock band Gerry Rafferty was in 1972. They also did the song "Star". Later on Gerry went out on his own & had the hits "Baker's Street", "Right Down The Line" & "Night Owl".

    I believe he's doing a Dylan parody here. Certainly sounds like him. Whatever the case, this is a pop rock classic introduced to millennials in the Tarentino film Reservoir Dogs, though it was featured in one of the bloodiest, most violent scenes in movie history. Keep going down these pop and rock rabbit holes my man. I figure you might have to go another 50 years before you hit them all! 😂

    • @DrStrangelove3891
      @DrStrangelove3891 12 дней назад +1

      I agree this is a Dylan parody. Not just the way he sings, but also the lyrics. Dylan songs have both jokers (All Along The Watchtower) and clowns (Like A Rolling Stone).

    JMBOY, I was a freshman in High school early 70s when this came out. I thought it was just me, but one night at a keg party, this song came on the radio. All at once, there was a collective groan when this song came on. It was like a race to change the station. I asked some other people why they didn't like this song, and most said it was just "lame" and the lyrics were pre-teenish and nonsensical. Those were the same reasons I disliked it too. After listening to Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Elton John and all the rest of classic Rock Royalty, this just wasn't in the same class for most over the age of 15 and older. Just a different opinion. Love this channel friend.
