Stereo Width Production Trick For Clarity and Space

- NOTE: There is a part where I talk about needing to press the "Stereoize" button for the effect to work. I should have clarified that this button needs to be pressed if your source is in MONO. If you already have some stereo width to your sound, this button is not essential. I hope I didn't cause confusion that this button must be pressed before the plugin does anything, I was only referring to MONO sources (Which is what we used in this video, the Rhodes and vocal). What I was referring to is also a common thing I see where a plugin being tweaked in "bypass" mode but the person swears it is making a difference.
This simple stereo width trick really gives a lot of space and focus to the vocal and transforms the sound of the song from a classic recording sound to a modern soundscape. Sometimes when trying to make an element more clear (such as the vocals) it's good to look at things competing with that element as opposed to trying to boost the clarity in the vocal. As with all stereo techniques make sure the sound doesn't end up out of phase or degraded too much, this technique can often be a "less is more" thing.
You can hear the full song used in this tutorial here.

Oh my god. You ruined my life for a moment. I had to check one of my projects and see if its truth...
Nervz many apologies,I was only thinking about MONO and was very single tracked in my thinking
All ok :)

I love your no filler no fluff exceptional videos... Constantly find myself referring to your Channel very much appreciated.
Your channel has helped me with so many different elements from understanding Serum, the types of sine waves, saturation, different types of VSTs/effects, mixing etc. (just off the top of my head). Great production quality and it's sincerely made my music sound fuller and better produced. No filler either. You're a real one bro
I listened the stereo seperated one like many times, it really adds the charm the feeling as I call it....stereo widening is always the first thing I look for, even before the loudness thing. I use the same Imager, it works like a miracle, definitely recommended. And thank you 'in the mix'....for introducing the mid side eq technique, one more good piece of knowledge you added in me, as you always do....Thank you....
POSITIVE ASS COMMENT, GG. I like that
I would definitely love to see a video on Mid-Side EQ. It's something that I still don't fully grasp. Will check to see if you've already posted on though since you posted this video a few months back. Thanks! ...and I love that you use Ozone to demo this stuff since I use it as well, haha.
agreed
agreed! great tutorial though.
this helped me understand mid to side EQ a lot better, great tutorial ruclips.net/video/3Ne1S3_FDe8/видео.html
Mid=central signal.
Side=L and R signal.
Then you EQ! Not complicated to understand how it works. To understand when and why you need it, it's the basic purpose of mixing = making frequency room for instruments/sounds so they sound better. But sometimes you need frequencies that sadly step on each other. Mid side EQ is helpful for this.
@@foxypotato3094 Going to check this - thanks.
So well spoken. It's like you watched all the RUclips videos ever and figured out how to properly talk to your audience.
You won't believe how bad my presentation skills were when I started. Steep learning curve!
"...in tutorials people leave this off, they start pushing the bands up saying they can hear stereo widthening" you made my day man xddd anyway, thanks for the help for stereo widthening ! (y)
this made me laugh so much
People are really dump 😅 be like ooh I hear some stereo width lol
Actually plugin works even if u dont touch the button. It acts like a mid\side equalizer. But only if your track has "side" information/recorded in room on stereo mics, etc. And yes, if u use it on a completely dry mono signal, it doesnt work.
@@eugelmusic yes and stereoize is just haas delay. U can do all of the things without this plugin
Dude! You're the shit man u start off so humble like your gonna give just a little but you end up giving blessings! 💯 in all vids
Love your channel! You guys teached me so much throughout the last year!
You have a keen ear and seem very intelligent. Thank you for this tutorial! It has helped me in my production goals.
I'm so glad I found this channel! So clear and concise at instructions. I don't care about channel logos and intros and Hey how are you guys doing today I hope everybody is doing good. I'm here to learn. I can't stand when people waste my time with video intros and junk like that. You cut the fat out and get to the point. I love that. thank you bro
I haven't seen a video you made yet that wasn't clear-cut, straight to the point and didn't help in some way. Thanks
I know we come here for the mixing ( and I appreciate you for all I've learnt from you ❤) but wow the music you make is amazing
Everytime I am struggling in FL studios you come and save the day. Much appreciated!!
It's super clear! Good song btw and always outstanding tutorials! I've considered taking your advice and sending out to a professional for mastering but I'm eager to learn how to do it myself. I might be able to someday but until then thanks for all the tips and quality tutorials!
Your videos really helps us, im really grateful that you put up the specific details that helps us keep going in the right direction. Appriciate this ❤️💯💯
It made the separation in the mix open up so much more
This man has a tutorial for everything, 10/10 as usual!
You're very informative and I love the videos but I think I'm here because you voice is soothing and relaxing
I would love to see a tutorial about stereo separation in more ambient, soundscape type tracks where more reverb, delay, and general spaciousness is used ... .
Very helpful video man! My band is about to release our first full length record and I'm doing all the production work myself. This made it sound way more full! :D
snitkerdoodles Nice! I'm happy to hear that, good luck :)
Thank you so much. You just save me from disaster. My new track sounds horrible despite the separation. I also used ozone and put the bands up BUT as you said, "other tutorials just leave them off and just ramp up the bands cause the can hear the stereo separation.", Boi it literally ticked me off. I have been using ozone for so long and i left all the stereotize off of my tracks because other tutorials said so.
You just saved me big time!
nice video, vocals sound much better without all that reverb :)
Evolve- The Performing Arts The dry vocals already had a lot of processing on them, compression and EQ etc so they sound quite good without. I think in the track the reverb helps it feel a bit more spacious
Reverb sound awesome esp intro ...reverb gives more feel to it,so its appropriate i guess.👍
it's too short of a clip to judge really, you have to listen intensely to the entire track before deciding anything.
maybe that long decay will work wonderfully in the bigger picture.
The reverb adds all the depth to the song
It's beautiful what do you mean
Great video! You could also re-voice the chords so they're not so close the melody, even bring it up an octave (which would still be consistent with the genre) that would resolve any frequency issues.
A little bit of sidechaining can also really help
GREAT VIDEO as usual! Your explanations are clear, straight to the point and easy to follow! I will be watching a lot more of your videos! also the way you speak is calm and relaxed! Well done! :)
Thank you so much Michael. Your videos are always very useful, well presented, easy to understand and as far as I am concerned, greatly appreciated.
You have never disappointed bruh
Tried this on my vocals and boom
It was the only thing I was missing Thanks alot
You deserve more subscribers bro, you've taught me a lot these past years, tnx
The very first thing i do when i open your video is dropping a like. Before seeing it man, excellent.
I'm completely new to the mixing/mastering process, and of all the YT tuts in this field, yours are by far the best that I've watched. Your presentations are clear and logical, and you explain complex concepts and techniques with a lucidness and simplicity that makes them so much easier to grasp. Your material is always very helpful, thank you for taking the time and effort to produce it!
+1 Tip: Patcher includes a preset for a MId-Side EQ using Parametric Equalizer 2. You can also use mid-side with stock plugins.
hands down best tutorials on youtube.
Great video. I've always kind of ignored MS eq, but it has actually solved some of my mixing problems.
Old but gold video. Too many engineers are now saying “don’t use md side EQ, only use imagers” and many are saying vice versa. The solution lies between both😎
Thanks. I’ve not heard anyone say not to use M/S EQ? I couldn’t imagine working without it! You’re right it’s just about finding the right tool for the job.
@@inthemix I can't list off any names but most of the times I've heard it were from workshops and master classes. The engineers often complain about the phase issues MS EQs create. The funny thing is, the engineers that favour midside EQ often denounce stereo imagers for the exact same reason 🤦🏻♂️
Also, amazing that you're still replying to comments on this video 4 years later!
Great trick Michael! I'm giving this a go with Patcher and splitting the signal in low, mono, and high with stereo effect.
I find your videos really helpful.thanks a lot for making these high quality videos
This instrumental is pretty... I never describe tracks as that but it sounds relaxing...
Can you do a tutorial on stereo widening and mid side eq with default/stock Fl Studio plugins please?
There's a MID SIDE EQ in patcher in YOULEAN X bank, just 2 knobs, works like magic
Alex Minner what’s with the negative vibe.
Alex Minner damn dude why act like that? I hate reading stuff like this. Seriously should be an IQ test before using the internet.
@@navazmerchant3241 wht r u talking about....2 different things at once
@@navazmerchant3241 wow thank you so much helped my sounds sound way better
I don't know anything about sound engineering, I just started getting into it. But one thing that really stood out is whatever you did to your vocals in the first part of the video completely changed the entire vibe of the song. All that reverby, airy synthesized effect on the vocals shouldn't need to be done if you want to achieve what you want. Am I correct? I much prefer natural dynamic vocals, surely you can keep that and work around it.
Sorry not sure if that makes sense, but I just didn't understand all that change to the vocals in the first place when you ended up steroizing the other tracks. I'd love to hear the "final" version on this YT video, but with the original vocals.
Also, I'd love to hear the final final version you released.
Great work man! I'm just starting to learn.
Dear Sir! Thank you very much! You make great job! Your videos helps a lot to learn FL. Thanks !!!! Video is clear and friendly
This was very well put together. Clever man ! Thanks
I make a little Drum&bass and this has answered many off my issues!! haha..Thank You again, i'm still grasping better mixing and this function is one that gets neglected..
2:04 only if track is mono i think.
Kyroshie Yes absolutely
@@inthemix I don't really understand the (if the track is in mono part that he said)
@@tonesfyre6386 if you're using the plug in on a stereo track you will be able to use the width without clicking stereoize since it's already stereo
@@xXAaron102Xx Thanks a log

You could also do it without a plug in at all. Duplicate the Rhodes channel. Pan one left and one right. Adjust the delay compensation (or move all instances of the sound on the time line over a very small amount). Bus the two channels back together to compress and EQ them together.
Usually sounds like shit in mono however
Does that produce the same result? I was wondering about this
Really cool! I used to use S1 Stereo Imager by Waves, but I always had serious phase issues and I didn't know it could be done this way. Thank you!
Great video. Sharing widely and adding it to the FS "Music Production" playlist.
You need to do a tutorial on the vocal sound here! Such a killer vibe.
never heard your music and WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY its so good.
Thank you for helping me understand stereo separation. Mid-side eq would be a great topic. Also, can you do a tutorial on how to use reverb and/or delay on a voice track, how to set up parameters correctly? I know it has to be on tempo, but I can't seem to make them work in my tracks as far as eq-ing it, how to not make it overcome the mix and other relevant things to watch for.
Thank you for this. I think I've been guilty for years of using this plugin WITHOUT the stereoize !... will get back to the lab and try this out.
Just a little update! If the source is mono you need to use that button. If your audio already had some stereo then you are all good,no need to press the button :)
@@inthemix good to know, will bear in mind, thanks.
1:58 lolololololanyway your vocal processing is unbelievable!
Another solid technique. Keep em coming boys!
This is a true gem. I recently enjoyed a similar book, and it was a true hidden gem. "The Art of Meaningful Relationships in the 21st Century" by Leo Flint
Good stuff mate you always answer my questions even before I ask
Thank you very much. All your videos are so very educative. Thank you
Best one i've seen so far, Thanks!
This is why Wider is a nice plug in, it doesnt mess with your phase.
Another technique would be do to a compressor on the rhodes with a sidechain input from the vocals. That will cause the rhodes to "duck" when the vocals come in.
You're all so full of good ideas. Where the fuck cheap ass garage sale did I get my brain from
I find that using the “stereorize” button on an entire mix can make your song sound thinner and washed out. Its more useful when used on an individual sound that’s in mono, but otherwise using the imager without the stereorize works fine
For the people asking for more on mid/side eq, check out Dan Worral’s videos for FabFilter. He goes really in debt about it. Great video btw!
Really relaxing to listen you teaching. Also, chill song
5:26 I was like "Fuck yeah"
Thanks for this and the link to the free version of Ozone. That's going to hold me for a bit. I've seen so many people use it on YT and didn't know if it was actually worth getting. The Elements Mastering Suite is a little expensive, but I already threw the free one on pretty much every track in a song I made ages ago and the difference is crazy outstanding. Game changing stuff, man. Thanks
Dude you're a pro in this field.
Hey! Thnx for the great tutorials , you Guys really helped me out on getting to the next level in production, keep up the good work man and thnx a lot
Very helpful stuff again man!
I was looking at your mixer there. It would be nice to see a video about how you set that up. I mean there are groupings and things there and probably a lot of interesting topics you'd need to touch on to explain how you control everything with it. I for one would be very interested for sure.
Exactly what I was needing. Thank you 😉👍🏻
Great video as always :)
Edit: Almost 100k subs!
This was great! definitely solved a lot of issues I've had. Thank you
this is dope. much appreciated. I prefer the mono mix because I need bass and the stereo mix had like 0 bass
Thank you so much! Great advice👍🏻 Can you please make a full tutorial about ozone 8? All the tutorials out there aren’t that clear as you are in the way you address our minds with your tutorials. Much appreciation ❤️
KARNASER I'll try to give it my best shot!
In The Mix Thank you bro 🙏🏻❤️
Thank you, I pop in from time to time,. Your tutorial s have been v helpful....
This was great! I'd love to see how you blend 2 different synths together, and how you process the Imager and mid side EQs. :)
Excellent work. I love to watch these
Because of this video and it’s information, i liked and subscribed , thx man :)
I never stop learning from you!
Those who critisise FL Studio are in desperate need of help.
Thanks for the video
Thank you so much for everything. very very useful, in fact all of your video's helped me a lot. Cold greetings from Belgium =)
Great job man... great info for turning a mono piano track into a more widened sound. ... sounds like a stereo track...
Thanx. Voxengo Stereo Touch is also a free alternative (and does the job well too)
Please do a video on this vocal chain. Very cool ethereal quality to it
This is SO SO helpful! Thank you.
I love your channel very much mich you doing a great job no matter what keep teaching us as your followers,is this plug in a demo or what?
Good tutorial make even deeper next if you mind, thx alot. Every advanced technique tutorials are very welcome. Didnt scroll all your videos yet but also layering videos are wlc as well any videos which helps sounds stand out from each other. Ozone and Neutron 2 both.
so far separation has been all ive really needed. but ill check out stereo widening.
just put it on my mix, everything was louder and really fat, voice fitted better in the mix so thanks bro
Another great video. Thank you! Would love a full video tutorial on this plug in. I just purchased Ozone so it would be a big help. I have mainly been using the stereo separation tool when mastering but wondering how it would work if I used the tool on separate tracks and then still used it on the entire mix when I master.
Great tutorial, keep it up, I've learn many tricks with your tips🙏
I really love your videos, you help me a lot!
Wow. This helped me alot, for my project which has alot of mono tracks!
How can I make mono vocals (main vocals) widen up so that it fits well in the mix? Vocals are autotuned and pitch corrected most of the times and it phases when made into double track and panned. Usually I try to mix double or more takes together but is there any other way? Thank you!
Man this sounds awesome. Well done!
This is super professional technique
Which interface do you use/recommend dude? I want to know what is ahead of focusrite when it's time to step up.
Your tutorial's are awesome. got any advice on which mix/master tools we can invest? I'm using the stockplugins in REAPER for a long time and I am really happy with it but I think it is time for an upgrade. I see there are amazing bundles @ the ozone website. Something you can recommend?
Kind greetings from Belgium, keep doing what you are doing cuz it is great and helped so many people.
Ok this is really really helpful thank you so much
This helped me on my mix right now, thanks!
This is exactly what I needed, thank you very much
Have you, or could you possibly do a video on using orchestral instruments in electronic music? Orchestral trance is my favorite sub genre, and I'm looking for how to effectively use strings, piano, brass, inside your mix. Thanks for all of your hard work! I've gone from newby in FL to very comfortable in a matter of weeks watching your channel.
This is a great trick! I wanted to know what do you use to capture the sound of your daw and the mic, I'm using screenflow but I can't record the stereo image, only mono!
Diego Oliveira I am going to make a "how I make RUclips videos" video very soon but I have tried many methods. Sometimes I use an Edison recorder on the master to record all the audio in FL studio but it kills my computer. Sometimes I use OBS screen recorder but recently I've bought am external Audio recorder (thanks to my Patrons) that I simply plug my microphone into and plug a headphone out from my interface. It records the audio into separate files and then I use OBS to capture my screen. It's never a perfect set up but it gives a good quality for the viewers
In The Mix thank you for the answer! Please try Audio Hijack, I demo it last night after my question here and it is just amazing how flexible it is. Keep up the greap work man, love your channel.
That reverb oh my word, so Godly🔥🔥🔥😭😭
