    This was very helpful. I grew up Anglican but went more Pentecostal. As I age I find myself looking for quiet and more silence; going back to the chants and this morning was figuring out how to engage with the Book of Common Prayer. So this was timely and exactly what I needed. Thank you!

    Thank you, I ordered that exact prayer book and, at first was mystified by the order, but you have helped to clarify it for be. Being a baptist this is all new to me, and I really believe that evangelical Christianity has lost a lot of history and prayer, reading disciplines that hold up our personal devotions.

    An excellent explanation of the Morning Office in the BCP. There are BCPs combined with Bibles into one volume that helps avoid the need to switch between books. I have one, and I use it all the time.

      [Edited] After making the below comment, I grabbed my Prayer Book/Bible and took it with me on a bike ride. The Bible wasn’t as hard to read as I had thought. Not ideal for long-periods but perfect to find the appropriate lesson/gospel reading.
      [Previous comment] I have a Cambridge Heritage 1662 BCP/Bible in one volume but the size of the type for the Bible is very small and hard to read.

    This is somewhat similar to the old Service Book and Hymnal, used by the Lutheran church up till the early 70’s. I would love to find a copy of this particular edition. I grew up Lutheran but have joined the Mennonite church which still follows the Bible more closely. I truly miss the church year and liturgical beauty.

    We’ve been doing evening prayer as a family for about a year now, and it’s been transformative. I think the main thing is not to say every single word, every prayer like a robot but just to do SOMETHING. Gathering as a family for Scripture and prayer at bare minimum is a form of humility because it says to God, “We need You”

    Great job in explaining the use of the Book of Common Prayer. I was given a copy as a confirmation gift by my Pastor in 1953. Yes, I still have it and sometimes even use it. Not often, but you have sparked the interest again. When I was in a place of no church to go to easily, I had my Bible and my Common Book of Prayer to see me through. Thanks again.

      God be with you forever, I don't know you in person but God knows you. God ministered to me in a revelation when I was on your profile to see things around you, I saw blessings but spiritual forces are holding onto them. In prayers I saw dark force in the realm of the spirit monitoring and plotting delay in your life with a motive to destroy all you've been working for. But as I speak to you now, this dark force time is up. I urge you to render a hand of favour with anything you can afford to give to this Orphanage home (DIVINE MOTHERLESS FOUNDATION) somewhere in Edo state Nigeria before 3DAYS with faith. As I raise my hands towards heaven and pray for you, they shall serve as point of contact wherever you are, you will receive double portion of Grace to excel and total restoration of breakthrough in your life and in the life of your family. Ask for their account details and donate to them. Call the M.D in charge of the orphanage to get their account details. (+2348167600219) or Email them on
      (Divinemotherlessfoundation@gmail.com)
      tell he/she I sent you, for it's not by might nor by strength but by thy spirit saith thy lord ( Zachariah 4:6) you shall testify to the glory of God. God bless you.

    I took delivery of mine this morning and have already learned that today (5th June) is the feast day of our British born martyr St. Boniface (he converted large areas of what is now modern-day Germany to Christianity in the 8th century) and that Sunday is Trinity Sunday so I will read the appropriate ‘lessons’ for both. It’s a lovely presentation in Moroccan leather, gilded edges etc. (by L.E.G.O. Italy) and the 11 point type is so easy on the eye.

    Although the BCP is the official prayer book and should be in every church there are many Anglicans that are not familiar with it. In most churches Common Worship which is the authorised alternative is used for most services and for the daily office. If both are used then Common Worship tends to be used for the main service in a morning and the BCP for evensong. But even this is not universal.

    As one who as a child always had to attend morning service in the Church of England, reading the Book of Common Prayer now - the 1662 version - is like leaning back slowly into a deep hot bath on a freezing cold night. I'm not at all religious, but the memory of the liturgy, the spectacular glory of the language, the certainties and the absolute sincerities of the writers are nourishment to the spirit. I am told that re-readings of the Surahs of the Muslim faith have the same effect on their lapsed people in the same way. We may grow out of belief, but the beauty and familiarity of the words still warm us.

    I have just ordered this book here in the UK. I already have the ‘standard’ version in black hardback but it has tiny print (8 points I think). This enlarged version will free me from having to read it online. I think the presentation of this volume also does better justice - to the words within - than the little hardback. This will also give me a kind of reading plan to use with my KJV (and NIV) regularly and with more order and purpose.

    One cool thing I didn't know about was that in the psalter each psalm has a Latin name above it. I typed the names in and came back with the composer of a song. Each psalm was written into a song that you can listen to. I thought that was pretty cool.

    Addition and correction to 1:53
    When praying the daily office alone or in a congregation without a priest, the rubrics appoint the following prayer (the collect for the 21st Sunday after Trinity) be said:
    Grant, we beseech thee, merciful Lord, to thy faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins, and serve thee with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
    This is a fairly new addition to the text of the 1662 BCP.

    Thanks for the great explanation, being brought up in a Reformed Baptist church I didn't really have much idea of what the Book of Common Prayer is about. One question I have is do you think that having prescribed prayers can cause issues sometimes? Is there sometimes too much reliance on prayers written by others and not our own? At the same time I guess this is helpful for when we can't find the words to bring to God.

    • @MatthewEverhard
      @MatthewEverhard  7 лет назад +11

      Yes, I think you are right. It can, ironically, actually become a substitute for prayer when the mind reads, but the heart does not actually pray. At the same time, it helps to establish a general rhythm, develop a prayer "language" (and I don't mean speaking in tongues!) and balance the prayer life. Since the BCP is relentlessly Biblical, it helps to allow Scripture to saturate the heart and mind.

    • @huwfulcher
      @huwfulcher 7 лет назад +3

      I agree with the idea of establishing a rhythm and prayer language (your comment on tongues made me laugh!). Good to know that the BCP is Biblical, I guess my church background (Independent Baptist church in Wales) comes from a tradition of not conforming to a higher authority in the church and as a result the BCP has never been used or mentioned in my church circles. Thanks for educating me!

      In Anglican spirituality, we also have cell groups, Alpha courses and other worship events in which prayer books are completely not used at all. I guess prayer book is more relevant in terms of one desiring to connect to the Church in the liturgical sense. We also have 'High church" and "low church" setting where the formal is almost similar to Catholic worship in form (not in substance though) and the latter is just like any other Protestants' contemporary style of praise and worship.

    • @josephr.gainey2079

      @@huwfulcher I would argue that the same issue arises when praying (and preaching) extemporaneously. Many times growing up in Wesleyan Methodist and Baptist churches the minister or deacon praying would degenerate into jumping from idea to unrelated idea continually. Their nonsensical ravings (I use the word advisedly) were often un-Biblical and contradictory to what they had just been said. Despite Puritan objections (which are a-historial and un-Scriptural), the Lord's Prayer and the remarks leading up to it clearly teach that a set form of prayers was to be used by Christian, just as the Jews of his day did (and still do). The churches I grew up in had ABSOLUTELY NO understanding of "Let all things be done decently and in order." (I Cor. 14:40) Set forms of prayer in Christian worship were the norm until abandoned by liberals like the Puritans and the Baptist, who were followed by the American frontier Methodists and the Pentecostals.
      If one takes the Book of Common Prayer and starts praying it using either the calendars in the 1662 or 1928 BCP on the first Sunday of Advent to next year's first Sunday of Advent, will have a basic understanding and knowledge of Scripture and Christian doctrine. (Avoid the 1979 United States edition for it removes the idea that man is a sinner and relegates the previous Traditional and Orthodox statements of belief to a "historical documents"section--to be believed or not at will. Don't overlook the Epistles, Gospels, and Collects--with the accent on the first syllable KALL 'ects--which are brief prayers expressing the general theme of the epistle and Gospel for the Sunday. I hope you all will take up this challenge.
      I learned much from my Non-Conformist heritage, but, I embraced tradition Anglicanism because I needed a more orderly, demanding spirituality. Not that I've always been able to adhere to it perfectly. I fail, but, God is merciful and I am currently trying to get myself back into the disciple of the Daily Office and meditative study of the Bible (the other prong of the Prayer Book system). I went through a long stretch of unemployment and lost everything I own, including my house. I have living no family and have only been able to find part-time employment. Brother, I covet your prayers! God Bless!!!

    • @Apriluser
      @Apriluser 5 лет назад +5

      I would also add, as a newcomer to Anglicanism, that Christians have a repertoire of hymns and songs that we sing over and over and for all of our life. We don’t make up and sing songs extemporaneously in worship but use hymns and spiritual songs that are well written and lyrically and musically by others. That’s how I would look at the BCP: well written, biblical, and useful for teaching and catechizing.

    There's a Book of Common Prayer: International Edition that replaces the prayers for the English Monarch, Royal Family, and Parliament with more general prayers for civil authorities and legislatures, and adds prayers from other prayerbooks more appropriate to modern times than prayers and thanksgivings for harvests.
    It also makes a few changes to the text to remove some of the most archaic language, such as replacing “them that” with “those who”, and “Father which art” with “Father who art.” The only other major changes are the removal of the Johannine Comma from the Epistle reading of 1 John 5, changing a few lines from the Psalms (probably bc textual criticism), and changing the catechism to replace something like “obeying your betters” with something more palatable to the modern audience. These other changes are really my only problem with it. They should've just changed the state prayers and let the rest be.
    It also has the original order for Scripture readings, which takes you through 4 chapters a day and the entire Psalter in a month. Each year, you end up reading most of the Old Testament minus genealogies, building stuff (like the temple), Chronicles, and most of Daniel. You also read through the Apocrypha once, and you read through the New Testament three times minus Revelation.

      I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest this was exactly from whence this cometh. IIRC, the Anglicans kept a lot of Roman Catholic practices, unlike most of the other denominations, so this is not surprising.

      They are Christian practices...but were reformed. Remember, and keep in mind, that all Protestant reformers in the 16th century retained liturgical practices. They believed that they were the true "Catholic" church. The now famous Calvin, (who actually wasn't as much of an influence in that era like Bucer) had a liturgical pattern of worship for the Lord's Supper which would surprise many today. A century and a half later is when Churches started to throw off some of the traditional liturgies. That is when ideas like the Regulative Principle or Normative Principle of Worship were invented (Presbyterianism).

    Thanks, I have been interested in this for some time. Is there a written guide to using BCP for the office that one could download. Also what is the best, most biblical, and least PC version of BPC that one can buy?

    • @PseudoPseudoDionysius
      @PseudoPseudoDionysius 4 года назад +2

      If you need something “biblical”, I’d suggest the Bible, as does the BCP itself, as should be clear from the video.
      The standard and most readily available version hasn’t changed in nearly 400 years, and (other versions mostly just vary in the sort of language used or differences between denominations and their practices). It’s not exactly clear why you would think the BCP would have versions that are either “PC” or not.

      The Puritans. The King commanded that there be no exegetical preaching of the Word, just observing these offices in the Book of Common Prayer. The Puritans (John Bunyan, John Owen, etc.) refused and were jailed and persecuted for their exegetical preaching.
      This book is a very good supplement to the Christian devotion, but must not replace the Word and the exegetical teaching of the Word in the Church.

    I am completely lost. In my Book of Common Prayer, my readings for the Monday following the 4th Sunday after Epiphany are not the same as yours. The more I try to understand this book--and I have consulted video after video after video--the less sense it makes. I am almost ready to give up on it and simply stick to the Bible. I don't understand why it is called a Book of Common Prayer. I see daily Scripture readings, but no prayers anywhere. So, do I pray whatever is in my heart? Do I pray the Scriptures I am reading? Absolutely befuddled.

      Hi. How are you doing now? I started using the BCP this January 2019 after watching this video and I am loving it. I don't know if I am using it exactly right, but does that matter? I am using the table if lessons by date of the month and really enjoying my bible reading. I play an audio bible reading at same time as following text and find it so helpful. The same with the psalms. I encourage you to continue with this book. It is your prayer book, use it your own way. Be encouraged. God Bless. X

      Probably because you're using a revised Book of Common Prayer. The liberal mainline TEC made the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, and other conservative Anglo-Catholics use the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. Those most keen to celebrate the English Reformation heritage utilize the original 1662 Book of Common Prayer as their lectionary and liturgy. Gerald Bray's article The Anglican Way explains why the 1662 best reflects the English Reformed heritage.

      Sad that your post got any "Thumbs Ups". You need to watch the video again and listen this time to the man giving the review! The first Protestant Church of England Prayer Book was in 1549, then the 1559 (Called "The Elizabethan Prayer Book", then the very good 1662 Book of Common Prayer, which is the one featured reviewed in this video. "Common" Prayers meant it was done in the common language for the common people that lived in the realm.
      There have been other editions. At least 3 or four American editions, from the late 1700's (that one changed the Prayers for the Monarch of Great Britain & the U.K. to prayers for the U.S. President and the U.S. Congress.), to one in the late 1800's to the 1928. There was also a 1935 "Reformed Episcopal" Prayer Book. {They broke from the Protestant Episcopal Church, U.S.A. in the 1870's over a few issues.}
      Sadly, in 1979 the now liberal, apostate "Episcopal Church" (they dropped the word "Protestant from the title) printed up the 1979 book and that became the book used in liberal congregations. They have been bleeding members since the 1960's. Every church group that goes "liberal" and quits believing the Holy Bible is true, goes down the drain. They "updated' the 1928 version and made a wishy-washy prayer book. There is also a 1962 version for Canada. You did not say which version of the B.O.C.P. you own.
      The 1662 version shown in the video is still the official version in the Anglican churches in the U.K. and the British Commonwealth. I think that if your Prayer book does not go along with the Prayer book in the video, you probably have a 1979 version. If you have some extra spending money, I suggest that you get/buy a British 1662 version or a 1928 (American) version. Try E-bay or Garage/Yard /Estate sales/"Friends of The Library" Sales.
      The British 1662 and the 1928 American use God-honoring excellent language. You can read the 1928 version each and every day at a free webpage titled: www dot Common Prayer dot org. They use the 1928 American version. There is a reading / prayer for each day of the week, not just The Lord's Day.
      As for Prayers: There ARE many prayers in the Book of Common Prayer. Do you see the word: "Collect" in your version? (It is pronounced KaLL-eck .) The "Collect" is a group prayer the whole congregation prays together. There are MANY other Prayers in a B.O.C.P. also: Prayers for the sick, the dying, the members of the Armed Forces, for women after childbirth, for good weather, for health, for food - but not famine, for protection from calamities, rain for the crops - but not floods, for peace, for mercy. The B.O.C.P. has the real 10 Commandants, not the R.C./Lutheran version [ which is only 9].
      At the back of the "Book of Common Prayer" is the thing that distinguishes the Church of England [ Anglican Church] from the other groups, especially Rome and Athens: "The 39 Articles of Religion".

      Ryan Setliff my knowledge and beliefs have developed even since I typed that comment. I do believe in the orthodox Christian belief that while yes we are sinners (in that we fall short of the glory of God), but I reject the notion that mankind is “totally deprived” or “wretched.” Original sin means that we are fallen from union with God, not that we’ve been done anything particularly horrendous. I believe more in the Christus Victor theory of atonement than penal substitution. Too many western Protestants actually believe that they are bad people, and deserve punishment. Where is the love and beauty in that?

    • @kylebarney3126
      @kylebarney3126 5 лет назад +2

      Ryan Setliff I didn’t say I or anyone was free of sin. I said we are not “totally depraved” as calvinists believe. We can choose to follow God and accept grace, like Arminius and Wesley believed.

      Each revision carried with it a certain theological approach. The ‘62 stands as both true to the 39 Articles and to a view that Scripture is authoritative. The ‘28 kept the beautiful language but drifted. The ‘79, many will say, was liberal and the language does not sound right.

      @Cristina Vetsch - The 1979 American is a liberal, apostate version and a waste of paper and ink and the eyeballs. You will not go wrong if you get/ buy a 1662 British or a 1928 American. God is Holy, and Righteous. The good language of the 1662 B.O.C.P. exalts God and reminds humans that they need a Saviour.
