Welcome to my garage pottery studio. This is my happy place where my kids and I play with clay and have a blast doing it! I started throwing pots again about 3 years ago, after a 20-year hiatus. Since then it's grown from a hobby to an obsession to the best job I could ever imagine!

neat idea about the test tile holders! I throw mine in the classic pyramid shape so they're self-standing but it's a total waste of clay. Great idea!

That's great! Yeah there are SO many decisions when you're building your workspace. I love it! I just did a reboot on my garage. I'll try to shoot another vid on it soon. Timothy! 360 Cameras are amazing! They are totally changing the video game. This was shot on a Insta360 One R. I worked in production for about 20 years before i became a potter and I think 360 camera are going to completely change how we do video. There is so much you can do with them!

Hi! Thanks so much for all of your information! Moving into my new home Friday with a completely empty 2.5 car garage (ie studio!). Definitely making your shelves in a bucket asap. My question: although you’re in Texas, do you ever have to worry about freezing? I’m worried about frozen clay/glazes.
Yes! We do have to worry about that sometimes. i usually bring my mixed glazes (liquids) in during the freeze. All my bulk dry elements I keep in bins outside and they have never had a problem. -mj
Hi! What a nice set up you have! Wonderful video..i do have a question... I'm thinking about starting a home studio inside my home where a garage used to be(now converted to a second living area) I have an area I could put a small electric kiln (maybe the next step down to the size you have) but I know it should be vented and I cant remember if we had them vented in college. It's a safe place fire safety wise, I'm just not sure about the fumes or gasses that would release. :)
Hi Nikki. Thanks for the encouragement about our space! We love it. I just re-arranged everything so i will post a new studio video soon.
Regarding ventilation - yeah it really should be ventilated. Some of those glazes have chemicals that can be rough. I haven't had any negative experiences like that but i think someone in the comments talked about getting a little spacey (high) when he was firing a glaze with lithium carbonate in it in a space that wasn't properly ventilated.
I usually leave my garage cracked a little when I fire overnight. During teh day the doors are up so it's not a problem.
Regarding ventilation - there are kits you can install on the bottom of your kiln that have like a duct and a fan sucks the hot air outside. that might not work in your situation. another option is some universities have vent fans in windowless kiln rooms. i had a vent fan installed in one of my bathrooms for about $130 a few months ago. I'm not really sure what would be required in your situation but I would think installing a vent would certainly be better than nothing at all :). Let me know how it's going. I think it's a good idea to have a home studio but i might be biased.
Curious.... is this your full time gig?
Yes it is! I started throwing again in October 2017 during a stressful season of life. It was my "therapy" that got me through the work day in my tech job. Then, when we moved back to the US in 2018, I started a home studio and started doing it full time. It is by far the most refreshing job I've ever had. Thanks for asking Mel.
Are you not worried about using a fan in your studio? No doubt it blows fine clay dust around and you're breathing it in.
No, I am concerned about it Kathrin. I have little munchkins in my house (attached to the garage) so I use it sparingly and I try to keep things mopped up pretty good in there. I've made some adjustments since this last video I'll share in my next studio tour. Great question!
But I have been digging a little more into Silicosis lately. I'm thinking about doing a video on it at some point. I'd love to hear what you know about it and when/where you learned about it. My only understanding of silicosis came from a mentor-potter I took a class with a couple years ago. And then I also knew Warren MacKenzie had it who is like the best of the best among potters.

You got a nice studio; lots of room. Mine is a death trap 😅quite crowded. I’m in Kingsville. That’s about 45 minutes south of Corpus Christi. Are you nearby? Would love to visit if so.
I should do a studio tour. It been a goal, but things happen and it becomes harder to get things done. 👍pottery.
