My great uncle was an actor in the 50's and 60's. He was friends with Jimmy Stewart for quite a long time. He said that everything you hear about him was truth and then some. He said that he was one of the kindest most genuine people that he ever knew.

Jimmy’s voice cracked. He spoke haltingly. Johnny was quiet. A falling pin could have been heard in that audience. And for three minutes, a Norman Rockwell slice of life was clear enough to reach out and touch - and experience - with all of one’s senses…

I used to deliver groceries to the Stewart house 6 days a week back when and I'm the guy who Mr. Stewart writes about being Beau's favorite prey.
We used to use a platform cart we would put the boxes on and Beau hated it. He bit me twice in a couple of years and the second time he really got me. One of Mr. Stewart's housekeepers looked at the back of my pants leg and there was blood all down the back of it. Nothing serious but it hurt like hell.
Anyway a couple of days later when I made my delivery the housekeeper said Mr. Stewart wanted to see me. He walked into the kitchen and asked how I was and apologized for Beau. Needless to say there was a pretty big Xmas tip that year. Beau passed on about a year later and Mr. Stewart wrote the poem he read.
Only met him a couple of times passing through the kitchen but he always stopped and shook my hand and asked how I was, a genuine, humble, class guy.

    "Beau"
    by Jimmy Stewart
He never came to me when I would call
Unless I had a tennis ball,
    Or he felt like it,
But mostly he didn't come at all.
    When he was young
    He never learned to heel
    Or sit or stay,
    He did things his way.
    Discipline was not his bag
But when you were with him things sure didn't drag.
He'd dig up a rosebush just to spite me,
And when I'd grab him, he'd turn and bite me.
He bit lots of folks from day to day,
The delivery boy was his favorite prey.
The gas man wouldn't read our meter,
He said we owned a real man-eater.
He set the house on fire
But the story's long to tell.
Suffice it to say that he survived
And the house survived as well.
On the evening walks, and Gloria took him,
He was always first out the door.
The Old One and I brought up the rear
    Because our bones were sore.
He would charge up the street with Mom hanging on,
What a beautiful pair they were!
And if it was still light and the tourists were out,
They created a bit of a stir.
But every once in a while, he would stop in his tracks
And with a frown on his face look around.
It was just to make sure that the Old One was there
And would follow him where he was bound.
We are early-to-bedders at our house--
I guess I'm the first to retire.
And as I'd leave the room he'd look at me
And get up from his place by the fire.
He knew where the tennis balls were upstairs,
And I'd give him one for a while.
He would push it under the bed with his nose
And I'd fish it out with a smile.
    And before very long
    He'd tire of the ball
And be asleep in his corner
    In no time at all.
And there were nights when I'd feel him
    Climb upon our bed
    And lie between us,
    And I'd pat his head.
And there were nights when I'd feel this stare
And I'd wake up and he'd be sitting there
And I reach out my hand and stroke his hair.
And sometimes I'd feel him sigh
and I think I know the reason why.
He would wake up at night
And he would have this fear
Of the dark, of life, of lots of things,
And he'd be glad to have me near.
    And now he's dead.
And there are nights when I think I feel him
Climb upon our bed and lie between us,
    And I pat his head.
And there are nights when I think
    I feel that stare
And I reach out my hand to stroke his hair,
    But he's not there.
Oh, how I wish that wasn't so,
I'll always love a dog named Beau.

She was struck by a car out where they lived, after retiring. The tears fell so long, and I realized my dad was crying too. This big man, an ex firefighter. He wrote me a letter or a note, I guess, to read when I graduated from college. It simply said that you haven't known real loss until you had to say good bye to a pet. Sorry this is so long.
He also gave me some advice. Do not listen to people who wonder why you are not "over it". You are not supposed to ever get over it. Find a place in your heart to keep the memory alive. That and love are the only things worth dying for.

Sophie, please be there when I go. I miss you.

This is why the Johnny Carson show was the best and can never be repeated. The guests he had were from the old era and brought in such insight, humor and or sadness. Jimmy Stewart's heart showed in this poem and Johnnys response was so honest. An Iron man like Johnny even got teary eyed. Miss these guys and the great programming.

+greg55666 First let me do this - 0100110001011011011101100011 - if you are a robot void of human emotion then that code of binary should enhance your capacity towards human understanding. Regardless of whether it's acting or genuine (it's genuine) it's still very touching and can bring emotions and memories of past pets to the viewers mind. People cry and get emotional while watching movies, that is acting and not at all genuine. It's not hard to see why this would make a lot of people cry.

My father, was my god. He was born during the worst times in America. Entered the Army as a 2Lt during Korea and spent 36 years as an Army Officer. He taught us boys right and wrong, how to steer into skid in snow, how to be a man and own up to your mistakes. He could fix anything, brakes on your car, replacing your roof, wiring in the house, this guy knew it all. He was not perfect, was mean, controlling, all around tough guy. But...He loved animals. He would go out of his way to rescue or help anything in distress. He taught us that our pets were more than that, they were family members. He quit hunting because he understood what it was like to be hunted, by the enemy. We had property and had goats, horses, cows, chickens, ducks, dogs and cats. His best son was our cat Andrew. He was my fathers companion and dad would take him everywhere. When we went to a different country Andrew always got in, no quarantine. It's amazing how a small animal, who humans don't even recognize as having intelligence, can shape who we are.

I just had to come & listen to Mr. Stewart read this again. Tomorrow is my birthday & it is also 3 years since my sweet boy Milo had a heart attack & passed away. He was born with a bad heart & I was told he would not live past the age of 5, but he did. He gave me 7 beautiful years of unconditional love & devotion. He died almost exactly a month after his newest brother, Sid, who had been abandoned to the streets died. One night I got out of my car to pump gas & Sid just climbed in. I don't know how long he lived on the streets, but I knew from that moment he would not die on them. He was so sick after that hard life. I had him 6 short months before the illness took him. They both died in my arms. There are times I think I see them run out of the woods after one of their adventures & then I realize, it is love's memory that makes me see that. I miss them so much. Mr. Stewart's poem says it all & the emotion in his voice expresses it.

I can't count the amount of tmes I've watched this video, but am compelled now for some reason to comment. Jimmy's long gone, and so is Johnny, and way before them was my dog Rusty. I grew up with him and one day I left and went into the US. Army. and my great Aunt took care of Rusty for me. and by the time I got back from seeing the world, finishing my tour with the Army Rusty had grown old. I walked into my Great Aunt's house. and he was lying under the kitchen table I called to him , his ears perked up he knew my voice. but the body was old. and it took all he could do to stand and walk to me. I knelt down and hugged him. then he walked back under the table and lay back down. time had taken its toll on him and that was the last time I saw him until now. listening to Jimmy read that. Rusty was in my heart and mind once more. its hard to write this through my tears but I did. Thank you Jimmy for bringing back Rusty to me one more time.

Ed McMahon later said that Jimmy's poem was "forgettable", but that he and Johnny were nevertheless moved to tears by Jimmy's passionate delivery. Well, I think he was wrong. Although the rhythm and meter of it may be somewhat elementary, the poem touched on several elements--humor, patience, forgiveness, reassurance, companionship, acceptance and grief--all part and parcel of what it means to truly love!
*_"I don't mind that your poem had a simple theme. Sometimes the most beautiful poetry can be about simple things, like a cat or a flower or rain. Poetry can come from anything with the stuff of revelation in it. Just don't let your poems be ordinary." -- Robin Williams as John Keating in "Dead Poets Society"_*
I say Ed McMahon was wrong because Jimmy's poem has the stuff of revelation in it!

+Hallie Harker It was human, and many people can't take that. From the start of it, the way he fumbled with his glasses, the way he read the poem, it was all real, no act, no trying to impress, it was just real humanity. Very moving.

Ed McMahon was forgettable and not Mr Stewart's heart felt poem.....Mr Stewart plainly loved his dog and as the old saying goes ' if kids and dogs don't like you.....your no God dam good'....Ed McMahon was always excess baggage on this great program.

They are, indeed. They are every bit as much family as humans are. I have known many people over the years who have had a harder time dealing with the loss of a canine or feline family member than a human one.

That`s because unlike the humans in the pet owner`s life, pets don`t point out their owner`s failings...never tell them what an arsehole they are :)

Class... Websters definition see Jimmy Stewart. If you have ever owned and loved a dog there is no way you are making thru this video without shedding a tear. Jimmy loved his Beau as all of us blessed to have owned a dog loved ours; no acting from the actor on this one straight from the heart!

There are many moments of the Tonight Show that stay with you and this one is near the top of my list. Few can bring an audience to silence and attention like Jimmy Stewart. I suspect that he and his dog have been happily reunited.

Who are the 122 brain-dead sociopathic twits who didn't like this video? Thank you, Mr. Stewart, for a moment of true humanity. My life has been inalterably changed and absolutely blessed by my being able to share it with my dogs. Mr. Stewart put all of that into a beautiful poem. RIP Mr. Stewart. I hope that you & Beau are together now.

This rips my heart out. RIP to these two tremendous talents. And to Beau as well. There was *nothing* Jimmy Stewart didn't to well. He was an outstanding comedic and serious actor as well. His array of characters stands out, as well as the movies themselves. One of the best in the industry. Ever.
I can't imagine anyone not being brought to tears by this. Dog lover or not.

It's been 2 years now since our beloved family member passed away. Kidney disease had started ravaging her body several months earlier until it was just too much to bear. As the injection coursed her veins, those last 20 seconds of life were made very special for her while she felt us stroke her head and she heard my wife say, "You're such a good dog." That's all she ever wanted to hear. She always tried to be good and she always was. She was everything to us. We will always miss you. You are such a good dog.

Yes, Phil I feel your pain! My Maggie is waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge too. Went about 2 years, without her,( had her for 14 years) then went and rescued another from the Humane Society, She is such a joy, not nearly the dog Maggie was, but I think she knows I saved her, somehow...just think about it when you are ready....

Phil Margolies Phil, we went through the same experience with our 14 year old Lab two months ago. She had kidney disease that we had treated and battled to keep her alive until she looked at me in a way that I knew, this was it. My daughter and I took her to the vet to put her down. We wrapped her in a fleece doggie blanket and I told her over and over that she was a good dog and how much we loved her. I think loving an animal that makes us more human, like having children, gives us more capacity to love.
