This is how you do different attacks in FFXV:
Even though you only have one attack button, O, you can do a variety of different moves by pushing the left analog stick in different directions while attacking. Also, releasing and re-pressing O can also trigger certain attacks. Other factors, such as distance to the enemy can also cause different moves to happen.
Most weapons have 5 different ground attacks and one aerial attack or combo. The ground attacks usually are:
Basic combo (just hold O)
Left analog stick forward + O
Left analog stick backwards + O
Left analog stick to either side + O
Stop holding O during a combo and re-press it after a split second.

Nice! My main gripe with great swords, I knew was going to be stuck in the animation swinging this thing around. Knowing that I can now skip the horizontal slashes makes me happy.
Yea, personally I never use the horizontal slashes unless there are a bunch of enemies near.
Replaying the game with a 4070ti on ultra now on Steam. Some games will never die!

Thank you. I was trying for 20 minutes to make sure this and shield don't have side attacks. I think I'll just stick to spamming Tempest when using GS, but that forward combo does look fun.

I've been looking EVERYWHERE for an explanation of weapon special moves. HUGE help here.
Question though: do these moveset ONLY work with the "hold down" method, or can you tap with inputs and get the same results?
I never tap myself, but they should work with that method too, since there shouldn't be any difference between the two methods.

In the dissidia games, there were only away and towards opponent inputs, so that's probably why there's no left/right inputs
love ur video guides mate i d really like to see multi weapon combo and specifically royal arms guides (cant understand whats their use since there are weapons that outperform them without hp loss)

question...can you switch weapons in the middle of a combo? like start with heavy sword then switch to daggers for the rest of the combo??
Short answer: No, if you switch to daggers they will start their basic combo from the start.
Long answer: Weapon switching is complicated and I still don't know everything about it. A weapon's combo seems to always bee combo starter->basic combo->combo finisher. At any point after the combo starter, pushing the left analog stick will trigger different attacks. When you switch a weapon, the new weapon will start this combo chain from after the starter. This means you can't for example do the first half of sword's basic combo and second half of daggers'. The daggers will start their combo from after the starter. However, you can chain different attacks from different weapons by pushing the analog stick during/after switching your weapon.

great!! i was thinking noone know theres a charge move on great sword, especially when u carry iron duke, you could see it glowing charging that could AOE, its like clouds move lol. just discovered it few days ago lol. i love the left analog and hit move. and jump in the air and hit quite flashy as well.
the tempest is also the special ability for gladio

Against a single target, are daggers superior to greatswords?
Strider Roshin For pure single target DPS, dagges are superior to everything (excluding some royal arms). However, if the enemy is weak to greatswords, they're generally better.

5:12 does anyone know how to trigger the alternative great sword arial? :/ is it like the spear thing, only triggers against small enemies? or directional analog?
It's like the spear aerial. You have to be directly above the enemy, so it's very hard to do against anything but small enemies.
