- Hydrogen-powered V12 engine. Fascinating thing. In this episode, we learn more about the prototype BMW 7 Series, E38 750hL that BMW made back in the 2000s. I stumbled upon one of these engines that appears to be very clean and very low mileage, so naturally, we take it apart. This engine is going to be the basis for our M73B54 OEM+ build for project Marseille, E31 850i 6-speed.

I am not even a BMW guy and watch these videos from start to finish, Great watching a craftsman do what they love.
Me neither but these old Bimmers definitely dont suck like the new ones.
Same here, i dont like bmw:s at all but Sreten is just a maqnificent man.
Mw neither, im in french cars, but videos are excelent.. Sreten is also from my conutry.. and im proud of him..
@Bas bzb I'm a Mercedes guy..
I was such a noob that I swapped a 206 gti for a 319 ti compact, and I didn't even know it was rear wheel drive for ages. First proper drive I thought it handled terrible because it was twichty on rear. Not long later timing chain rail or something broke, only other BMW I owned was a base model 1998 520i, cloth seats manual, that lasted about 6 months before a coil pack if I remember correctly went and I couldn't afford the repairs. I tried the poor man route but didn't work lol
You are a superb mechanic Sreten, but even more you are a superior level video editor. You give us just the POP and none of the POOP. It's what makes your videos so watchable.
Indeed
Ditto
Fully agree with you. Always a pleasure watching your vids Sreten!
No BS just BMs. Brilliant work as usual 👍
Well said!
I was a BMW Technician for 10 years and love these cars from these eras. Watching your videos makes me feel like a complete rookie. You are one of the best mechanics I have ever seen. Love your videos.
All “technicians” that work in STEALerships don’t have a clue what their doing
When bangles was around they make all sort o kink bmw
What are you now?
Kudos to Viktor for his support. Prayers for his safety and that of his family and employees.
It's no exaggeration to say that Viktor is a hero.
Feeling dread as I move my cursor to see how long is left only to find that I'm only half way through and have another amazing 20 minutes to enjoy! Such a refreshing feeling to get through some significant work with out the project being unnecessarily chopped into tiny pieces.
Haha, exactly!
hahaha I also do this :D
Same here!
Same here🤣🤣
And videos come in a very reasonable amount of time.
I can imagine the pure joy of finding a V12 engine like that in such immaculate condition. You must be thrilled.
I would almost say "Like a Virgin", however, I have always found that a good engine that has been looked after and has gone through heat cycles is a better candidate than a brand new engine for a refurb project.
Not immaculate since 4 of the cylinders have bad exhaust valves
@@dantheman1337 Dan, I think that you would have to agree, however, that the sticky exhaust valves are easily fixed and it would be very hard to find a better engine of that age, with such low mileage.
If you are doing OEM+ build you can coat the exhaust collectors in ceramic. There are surfaces that are blocking heat better
I second this👍Also helps performance
Actual real good suggestion! Not only helps keep the engine compartment cooler, it helps the cats doing their job.
Good to know that a 5000 km a hidrogen motor was not rusty. The reason for the leak valve could be many. If solar hidrogen production plant be economic and susteinable this car could be axcelent options for Germans in general. Good look
Wow that exhaust manifold is a piece of art!!!! And especially when I heard that it is made in Ukraine, that makes my skin with goosebumps, I am so proud of our people's!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

You are the only channel I watch a video from the beginning to end without skipping once. The pacing there is phenomenal and there's not a single moment where I feel like I'd need to jump a tiny bit, simply wonderful.
Same here. Every other channel I find myself playing with my phone but this I'm truly engaged in.
Your doing such a great job saving these neglected car. Thank you for everything you do.
I was working in Munich near Hauferlandstrasse on NG4 engine planning when these cars were out and about. They converted 1 pump to hydrogen at the Shell garage on Leopoldstr.
26:00 That is the best Milwaukee non-ad ad i have ever seen.
You got that M73 for a steal! really clean engine. I'm very excited for the first start up 😁
Awesome! Two engine tear-downs for the price of one! Also, your excitement is understandable and very contagious, hahaha. This is going to be one hell of a ride. Imagine if you could've done the impossiblest (yes, it's now a word) task of rebuilding this engine to run on hydrogen, lol.
Regarding the new camera, I'm pretty much sold on this one. Video quality looks pretty on-par with the old 4k one, and there aren't any strange audio issues, so that's already an Improvement. Also, well, I'm a massive Sony fanboy, so I can't quite be neutral on this, but I'm glad this one's working for you! Autofocus can be a little bit hard to manage, I guess, but practice makes perfect, don't worry too much about it.
Most impossible is the correct superlative.
@@machtschnell7452 I know, I know. I was just building on the general Internet joke of creating words that you know are wrong (especially with comparatives and superlatives) just for fun. That's why you add the "(yeah, that's now a word)" thing between parentheses.
Cannot wait to see how this hydrogen prototype V12 performs. So exciting 😎
It was a pile of crap. Heavy and limited range. Using liquid H2 was a crazy idea.
As a concept, using H2 for personal transportation is a non-starter. Better to rip that overly complicated boat anchor of an engine out and stick an electric motor in there.
He's not using it for that - no hydrogen going to be performing anywhere
I gotta say you're so good for people's mentality because you do what many shrinks can't do. Provide such a viewing pleasure that anyone watching your work feels at peace. By far always a pleasure watching you go! I love it and it's a constant motivator to go and do my own mechanical work on my whip! One thing you said that's 100% right is the pleasure you get when it's done and your inspections by the Government is proof of it. Keep making it happen!!!💪🏼
H2 ICE are very interresting at the moment now in the R & D field. I worked on it during my master degree in the laboratory and now in my job for combustion research. It is a great engineering area, where is much to discover. But a NA H2 ICE is not barley impressive, since the volumetric energy amount of H2-air gas mixture is poor. Yet it burns so fast througth and leaves alsmost no residuals (as we see on your V12 here) in the chamber. And one can run it extremly lean which means nearly no NOx emissions. With the correct charging system you can reach same values for torque and power as a comparable diesel engine.
Great disassambling again Sreten, perfect!
I'm a JDM guy, but seeing you work on these cars is a sight to behold. Amazing content. You rock!
No nothing of engineering or car maintenance, but I find what you do absolutely fascinating and addictive, your humour your enthusiasm is a joy and to know it’s a chap doing what he loves kinda makes it special, and by the way thank you .
Your excitement, the happiness are contagious. It's a real pleasure to see you working on these projects and 45 minutes of video flown away too fast. Congratulations and keep up the fantastic job.
I don’t even own a spanner and I watch these videos religiously, I found the channel when it had 57k subscribers it is amazing
These old Bimmers are very reliable than the new ones 💪
The effort you spend editing, it alone, deserves all the praise! You’re the best
I thank you once again for uploading a such well filmed and well edited video and of course entertaining my afternoon with Project Marseille. Much love from me :)
You do on RUclips what Ed China needed a whole TV show for. Now he can’t even come close to you. Thank you dude.
Ive honestly gained a SIGNIFIGANT amount of BMW knowledge + facts from this channel .....
which I regurgitate to my pals as if i knew .... Thank you guys for educating me ... and my friends lol
two or three episodes of content in one - awesome as ever, and much appreciated. And yes, this is as (vicariously) exciting to us as for yourself. That engine is just stunning - what a result! - I suspect a few people are going to be doing double-takes on the autobahn when it gets its first blast after break-in.
Great teardown compilation! It's fun just watching you do this after wrenching on cars, bikes, and trucks since the 1970's. Looking forward to the build up for installation into the 850i. New subscriber here. Keep up the great work!😄👍
This, my friend, is waaaay better than Netflix!
Greetings from Brazil!
The longer the video, the more excited I get. Great video Sreten and I'm glad the engine is in such good condition. This series is going to be awesome. ✌️❤️
Another great project. Please never stop what you are doing.
Great attention to detail in all your builds, the hard work pays off well done👍
I always look forward to watching a new M539 Restoration video. Glad to be part of your journey.
Your videos always hit the mark for me! It's so great to watch your dedication and how you work around any obstacle.
I find it very inspiring to do more car stuff on my own, thanks Sreten!
As always, I absolutely love your videos. This is really neat - you don't usually get to see an almost factory new engine being torn apart. As a fellow IT and car guy, I'm super happy that you get to work on your passions all day!
Sreten, you’re the man! 😎 I love BMW’s and seeing you put all the hard work that you do in each build is incredible, I’m buying an E46 M3 this year hopefully, depending on the market, can’t wait to see the conclusion to this SWEET 8-series! Saludos from Los Angeles ☀️👋🏼
Your enthusiasm is infectious. Watching this disassembly just flew by and I am so looking forward to the reassembly process. That motor is going to sing.
Prvo lajk pa se onda gleda ova profesionalnost i posvecenost sa uzivanjem. Bravo ! Kapa dole !
I really like the idea of porting & polishing the heads, but I also don't want to wait months for it...hopefully the second shop can work something out and put this project at the head of the line!
Your exitement (even if things are difficult) is one of the really attractive aspects of your channel. Besides the good Videos and the proper work (always in mind, that you are not a mechanic in the first place, but a real enthusiastic gearhead doing stuff very systematically).
Now we out here in the www are all waiting for the continuation of this project! Go for it man!
Man, I love watching your videos. Keep doing what you’re doing!
That 45 minutes went by so fast! Fantastic as always! 😎
Os melhores vídeos sobre BMW do mundo estão aqui. Parabéns pelo excelente trabalho! Abraço do Brasil.
Just like you've enjoyed every minute of tearing down these engines, I've enjoyed every second of watching this series! Favourite car channel by far, keep it up.
Beautiful work, it truly is a pleasure to watch you work, can't wait to see more, best regards from brazil
We used to have a 6-cylinder motor on the farm that ran on propane. It was always super clean. Changing the oil was eye opening since the oil barely showed signs of use. The spark plugs were always clean. Propane was so much better than that filthy gasoline. I was worried and confused for a moment when you said "hard pass" as around here that means "no good, no way, no how, I'm walking away now" but then I realized you meant that it had passed with flying colors as it was perfect.
Yea propane burns cleaner. I’d do a oil analysis and see if it needs to be changed. Might be able to get more hours on it.
26 minutes in and I was getting worried that I wouldn't see any vapour blasting! Phew, I knew Sreten would have my back though. Parts cleaning porn courtesy of Vixen Surface Treatments as always. 🙂
It warms my heart to see you like a kid on Christmas morning when you are playing with that engine. You got one hell of a deal on that pristine engine!!!ENJOY!!!!!!!!
Ćao, Sretene legendo. Uživanje je gledati ove videe.
thanks for uploading! Fortunately I'm not sleeping yet :)
This video series is something I’ve looking forward to for months! So excited for the journey and end result. Just curious, on the m73, how did/could the rod bearings get damaged on such a low mile engine while every other neighboring component like the crankshaft and piston components were pristine?
I enjoy watching your videos... Thank you so much, please continue this way. 👍
Another great video, Sreten! We love what you do with the Aquablast and on your channel- keep up the fab work! 👏🏻
So cool seeing a prototype engine back to life. I hope project Marseille doesn't have too much rust on her. Should look and sound absolutely amazing. Maybe one day we'll see Sreten do an electric bmw conversion just for shits and giggles lol. Cheers my friend.
You can try lapping the valves, if that doesn't work you can just replace the valve seat, it would have to go to a shop to get cut though so praying just lapping em works. Should if the rust hasn't pitted the seat.
These guys might be able to help, they do incredible work. youtube.com/@JAMSIONLINE
Loved the episode, and stoked you got a rare new mintt engine for the E31. Hence, why did you have to change the oil pump back to the old one and the uneven wear on the rod bearings within 5k km needs little more investigating. Perhaps measure the weights of the pistons and rods see if they are all within tolerances since you're going to be removing them anyway
Thank you! I have to use M70 (old) oil pump because I also need to use M70 oil pans. A bit of wear on the rod bearings is somewhat expected on a test engine, probably revved high. The weight of the pistons and rods can't change unless they were damaged nor does that affect bearing wear. Oil lubrication and clearance do.
Fantastic video! Watching you do this makes me feel much more confident in doing my own work on my e30. I'm not new to mechanical work, just BMW.
Thanks for the education and entertainment! Looking forward to more.
Is it strange I feel a certain exclusivity when I catch one of your uploads early enough that it hasn't reached 1k views yet, knowing that it will soon be in the hundreds of thousands?!
This channel is pure inspiration & pure Gold! Greetings from the Swiss cheese roads of NJ!
Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦!
Can't wait to watch future videos on this project! Working on a e28 and these videos are truly an inspiration for me.
Absolutely excited for this project. Your restorations are always worth beholding.
Great episode, as always. Thank you Sreten!
Your videos are joy to watch. THANKS
Pretty fun that they made an “environmentally friendly” V12, pretty interesting choice of engine to choose as a base.
Wow! There is something magical about watching this man work - he knows what he is doing and gets on with it! Thanks for sharing man!
Another great episode mate cannot wait for the next one to come so enjoy seeing the BMW engines being brought back to life properly Thanks Sreten
Sreten, every time your videos come out, I sit down, pour myself a Weissbier and chill. Such good content from a master of BMW's! Please keep them coming.
i just love when you say "Cooming up" it always in the same tone and i repeat it with your video, you such a good man, cheers.
This is why I love RUclips. Real talented people sharing something like this for free!

It is an absolute pleasure to watch you work Sreten👍🏻
I enjoy every second watching. Happy like a kid on xmas when a new episode i out. Keep up the good work Sreten, and thx
I was annoyed about my N52 engine running rough. Still not fixed after replacing: coils and spark plugs. Now ordered new Vanos solenoids.
But then this wrenchfest popped up in my landing page.
Thanks for all the amazing content the past years. You inspired me to work on my own BMW aswell! I always look forward to watching your videos.
Beautiful work, it truly is a pleasure to watch you work, can't wait to see more, best regards from Romania :D
I have waited so longggggg! Awesome!!!!!!! Your channel is the best!
I only wish I could take a lap in this beauty once she's finished! Great car. Great technician. Great content! Thanks SO much for the video.
Shreten wagging his tail out of happyness over a disassembled engine: true love for the sport of mechanicken. Good and heartwarming to watch. Keep on enjoy yourself!!! We love ya!
