All these years later still one of the greatest fights I've ever watched. I remember how tense this fight felt watching it live. Two warriors in their primes. Miss these days of boxing.
Definitely a classic!! Was waiting for someone to whip Taylor after he got those decisions over my Favorite fighter in Hopkins!! Pavlik definitely came through after getting knocked down early!! Hopkins down the line defeated Pavlik flawlessly!! All GREAT Fights tho 4 sure!! 💯💯🔥🔥🔥
Facts I watched this fight and tried to find a fight similar with the same action and went to Sugar Ray Vs Tommy Hearns, and it still didn’t top this Fight! 💯💯
@@BDJ4mTexthis was the best fight i ever saw live. I was only 19 the world at my feet. I was pumped afterwards with emotion i took my labrador for an early run. Its sad to think Emmanuel steward is dead, pavlik is retired, Taylor facing legal problems and my health failing me badly. I can never forget this fight. My girlfriend thought i was crazy staying up and then saying ive got to run this emotion off lol
Me and a buddy played pool with Jermain Taylor at professor bowl in LR day after HBO fight night in 2001! I remember him appreciating us treating him like a regular person as exec's and ceoc's and fans continued to interrupt our 2 on 2 pool games.
One of the greatest middle weight champion fights of all time. I was truly inspired by Pavlik's rise and how he held on for dear life life when JT shook him. I still remember it until this day and I think some of yall feel the same way.
@@jimnagel5611 For sure ..... never the same ! If he could’ve finished Pavlik when he had him hurt I think it would’ve put T on a completely different path . But who knows ? When you have a banger like P hurt dazed and confused you better finish him instead of gassing out! Great fight
Man, being from the Youngstown area and knowing Kelly, this is great to watch again. He's a legend here... Wish he could've went on for longer than he did as a boxer. This fight was so good. Boxing isn't the same anymore, this was a great time for boxing.
I'm from Michigan and I went down there to visit my girlfriend and he happened to be signing autographs at a Chevy dealership, and I got to meet him and he signed my ring magazine, it was the coolest random thing.
My dad was an Ohio state trooper. He said the biggest guys that graduated from the academy always got sent to the Warren post, if that tells you anything.
I fucking loved pavlik based off this fight. Matching him with Hopkins was an AWFUL career move. And then I realised his corner man was absolutely terrible. His advice between rounds was often either basic, or actively bad advice. Those two things ruined him, imho.
That was a vicious battle. Two very hard punchers with hearts of lions but Pavlik looked as if he could stand up, brush off his pants and take a stroll about town if a freight train hit him...
I still look back on this fight with fond memories. Remember watching it with my older brother. Couldn’t believe Pavlik had won. It wasn’t just that Pavlik won, it was that he withstood the early barrage, and somehow had the strength the bounce back. Taylor a hell of a fighter, just wasn’t his night.
love that memory, Taylor was a superb fighter, especially at 160. The fact he got stopped against Pavlik and Froch (168) shouldnt disguise how great he was.
Absolutely brilliant fight. When Terence Crawford fights in Omaha the crowd there has always reminded me alot of the fans who got behind Pavlik - an unfashionable place with a top fighter, and when its a great fight like this they make it even better.
One of Jermain Taylor's problems was not just stamina, but lack of defense as well. He lost this fight equally based off of poor defense as well poor stamina
this is the perfect fight to me. 2 undefeated guys, contrast of styles, back and forth war, lennox, larry and jim on the mic, manny stewart in the corner, smoger the 3rd man. lederman foreshadowing after the 3rd round "jermaine taylor doesnt stop straight right hands too well" was an amazing observation considering it was taylor who had dropped pavlik in the second. and larry merchant saying "taylor wanted a conventional fighter...he got one." pavlik does the basics so well. 1-2, 1-1-2, all day.
The previous fights before this fight of both their careers, Taylor vs Wright and Pavlik vs Miranda I watched. When Kelly beat Miranda I told my dad, either one of those 2 would beat Taylor. And wow, Kelly beat the brakes of a vehicle with no brakes. Unbelievable fight.
I think many refs stop this fight at the point when Kelly nearly goes down a second time. Pavlik had NO business getting past those three 100% clean punches landed in the replay (nor the other 15-20 punches landed in the volley) he had even LESS business winning round 3! Wish we could see more title fights like this: competitive. Competitive fights often break out into exciting fights. I hate to sound like most other old fart boxing fans but for the most part, things just ain't the same
This was the first fight I attended live. So many great memories! I still have the bloodied towels I took from the ring with my best college buddy at the time.
Still fun and exciting to watch. Taylor for sure had his moments but to me it looked like he was running out of gas every time he attacked Pavlik with combinations. After that Pavlik had his momentum. Back and forth. But Taylor looked more sloppy and less careful in his defence. Pavlik never let him rest and collect himself. Great fight.
I went to this fight with my dad. Great energy at Boardwalk Hall. We also went to the Pavlik v Hopkins fight. Thought Kelly would win that one but BHop put on a clinic that night. I’m from Philadelphia area but I remember Youngstown representing very well on both of those nights.
33:37: Commentary slept on the finish. Hard right from Pavlik at 1:05 that rocked Taylor, Larry Merchant is talking over the fight instead of calling it and no one interjects.
Al Haymon very much enjoying the fight. Pretty close to center screen during the hard camera* shots *I think that's what the main camera is called in wrastlin'
imagine you go to a world shampion ship fight, two undefeated, oposite styles, both knowing that they go every round to an epic war, knock down, comeback, broken nose, kockout of the year contender, the screeming of the people, and yo go home with a blood stained shirt; what an epic story.
I really knew nothing about these two warriors, but that might just be up there with the greatest fights of all time. Just magnificent! The finish was so brutally clinical with those carefully chosen uppercuts and I loved Taylor's left hand; such speed in those left leads and hooks. The fella almost looked the perfect boxer/fighter and yet Pavlik eventually dominated in all technical aspects - weird.
Some fans think that the Hagler/ Hearns fight was the best round in boxing history. I respectfully disagree in that this fight was like the Hagler/Hearne fight for EVERY round!
This hands down one of the best boxing fights in History 🔥🔥🔥
