Duran, supposedly past his prime, stood in with the marvelous 1. Giving & taking for 15 rounds. I highly respect both of these fighters. Hagler 1 of the best middleweights ever. This was a great, great match up./ Fight
This coming year is great for boxing too, it’s true the boxing fans were lucky to have the four kings back then because of the frequency of these amazing fights. If looking for highlight fights coming up check out Tank V Garcia, Haney V Loma and Usyk vs Fury. These will be also some fights for the history books :)
Roberto duran was pretty bad in this fight. Just compare his energy with the energy he had in sugar ray / duran 1 Thats a different fighter, if he could survive hagler with this mediocre conditioning/performance... Imagine prime duran
The fact that Duran, Hagler, Hearns and Leonard faces each other in thier primes just shows how lucky boxing fans back in the 80s than today's ducking era.
I remember watching Marvin when He was a teen, boxing in the Lowell, Ma. Golden Gloves, at the N.E. Finals, He came out with the shaved head for the 1st time! Also saw Dick Ecklund & his brother Micky , from the "Fighter movie"!? It was also the place where Rocky Marciano got his start? I had a good friend, Matty Ross, who got his start there, He ended up the light heavy weight champ of N.E., became Marvin's sparring partner, toured the world with Hagler! He never had to buy a beer, back home in Billerica, Ma.? Matty also boxed 4 rounds with Ali, in Boston? Every man in Billerica went? Ali was between belts at the time? Also saw Ecklund box Sugar Ray, they also had a few words in the Fighter movie about Leonard going down, I saw it, the crowd ROARED! OH the Memories?
When he fought sugar ray, looks like something was not right,he looked like same when Duran fought sugar 2nd,time, like something was planned for them to throw the fight,.same w Tommy Hearns, he wasn't knocked out, referre didn't count 8,,he was getting up n fight was stopped and Hearns was winning n ray w a broken eye had only one chance ,if Hearns would of being w a broken eye fight would of being stopped, I watched those 3 fights, n all 3 guys were better than sugar ray,Camacho knocked him out, when Camacho was champion
I wish older boxing matches were preserved better. But it's awesome to see Marvelous Marvin Hagler get the respect he deserved during his boxing career. Rest easy Champ, millions will learn of your iron heart and diamond will.
Agreed. Just like they digitally restore and preserve old films for future generation to enjoy. They need to restore and preserve these fights so fight fans can enjoy
I like older fights to look a bit fussy. It's not bad to me because I still watch VHS, and old films with some grain to them. That's how people watched it on their television sets back in the day. I still remember even watching Lennox Lewis, Holyfield, Tyson, James Toney, Roy Jones Jr, Hopkins, and other guys from the 90's in standard definition. It takes me back to that time period when I see that kind of stuff, but everyone has a different outlook on that stuff.
Actually they had no power or media power to get them selves out there a few channels u died to get on ABC u would fight a horse for media time if you could pick and choose back then people would of had a similar strategy longevity.
Arguably the greatest lightweight of all time giving arguably the greatest middleweight of all time a legitimately tough fight. Duran was something else man.
this is always my argument for him being the greatest of the Four Kings. granted, anyone who picks the other three isn't really "wrong", because they were all absolutely exceptional. but I think the fact that Duran was ALREADY (arguably) the greatest lightweight of all time and was able to be competitive with the greatest middleweights of all time is truly remarkable. he was like a proto-Pacquiao
@@thejamnasium6447 Interesting but IMO 'Sugar' Ray Leonard was the greatest of the four (head-to-head) as he held victories over the other 3 plus a win over notable omission and honorary 5th 'King': Wilfredo Benitez. Interestingly, when Benitez was still WBC junior middle champ and had just beaten Roberto Duran in January '82, he said he was struggling to make 154 and called out the 'Marvelous One' for a middleweight title fight for later that year. Despite Marvin publicly saying he also wanted it and the world wanting to see it, Hagler inexplicably chose, instead, to fight Caveman Lee and then Fulgencio Obelmejias again (whom he had already KO'd before and did so again). After a layoff waiting for Hagler, Benitez fought Hearns at 154 and lost his title on points but if that Hagler fight had been made, perhaps Wilfredo would have also fought all of that Fab 4, not 3.
@@MajikBoxx Nah it's Duran. He's the undisputed fighter of the decade (70's) as a lightweight but was good enough to hang with the best guys in the 80's who were 2 divisions above him. He basically has 2 HOF careers rolled into one. The untouchable and greatest lightweight Duran and the Fab 4 era Duran. He's the only one who beat Leonard in his prime. Even just the fact that he fought from 1967 to 2001 is already a HOF achievement in and of itself. That's a career that started before the moon landing all the way to 9/11 and he still looks mentally sharp today.
@@MajikBoxx and Duran beat Leonard at the Brawl In Montreal. perhaps proving my point haha. I'm not giving you shit SRL is obviously one of the best fighters of all time. just a good conversation/argument to have
The conditioning of these fighters from a bygone era was insane. Endless stamina and durability, with lateral movement throughout. No water cuts or malnourishment to make weight, just incredible fitness. Duran moving up to fight the bigger guys wasn't a wild decision. He has very wide shoulders for his size and obviously the toughness and punching power. Hagler is just a damned-perfect fighter who beat all of the best from his era (yes, he beat Leonard).
Hagler is the people's champ. But he did a lot wrong in that fight that costed him. I scored it 1 - Leonard 2 - Leonard 3 - Leonard 4 - Leonard 5 - Hagler 6 - Leonard 7 - Hagler 8 - Hagler 9 - Hagler 10 - Hagler 11 - Leonard 12 - Hagler I had it a draw. It's not hard to imagine though that the judges would've given Leonard an extra round compared to my scoring.
All hail Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, and Durán, the greatest quartet of fighters of all time! We were so blessed in the 80's to witness true greatness in the form of these warriors.
Right? I grew up watching that all and loving it, but....kinda taking it for granted, like, "Yeah. This is what boxing is." Sadly, I didn't realize until decades later, "No man. That was a golden age."
The fact that Duran has gone up in weight at his height and giving up other variables and going the distance with scientific fighter like Hagler is incredible, Durans boxing instincts are insane.
Duran fought a fire breathing dragon, looked him in the eye, and didn't blink. He might have lost a unanimous decision, but even in defeat he also further solidified his status as one of the GOAT's of boxing. The number of accomplishments from Duran is insane. Hagler, Duran, Leonard, and Hearns were all superhuman killing machines in the ring. Hagler had built in headgear like an armored tank, and could fight from either stance. Duran had steel in his fists, along with excellent head movement, and all of the tricks of the trade when it came to fighting on the inside both offensively, and defensively. Leonard had golden legs and feet, great movement, and lightning quick hands. Hearns was a physical freak of nature with long legs, long arms, a dynamite right hand, and the prettiest jab I have ever seen. Benitez was a defensive genius with an extremely well rounded skillset. All of them had the heart, and will of 5 fighters put together, and they all could do everything in the ring, but they all had different styles, and different strengths. I don't think any of them had any real weaknesses in their game. The differences in their styles, and approaches made these matchups so great to watch. I can't take my eyes of the dude in the audience who literally had a pearly white smile on his face for the entire fight. I also see Hearns in the audience looking like he wants to step into that ring and participate in the fight.
I was at that fight. Of all things, Bo Derek was in the crowd and Freddie Roach fought on the under card. Everyone thought is was going to be a one-two round blow out by Hagler and instead it went the distance. I said it forty years ago and I'll say it again tonight: Hagler won the fight, but Duran won the night.
Everybody talks about Hagler's toughness and rock solid chin but this fight really highlights his ring IQ. Never seen anybody dominate Duran on the inside like this. Love these old school fights especially when it showcases the all time greats
Great point. People love to point to this as an example of how Hagler couldn't be great if a lightweight gave him trouble. Well, Hagler had a mediocre night; Duran had the chin, slickness, power, diverse skills, and balls to fight well as a middleweight; their stances and rhythms lent to them crashing and getting tangled... AND, although Duran fought a great fight, it wasn't really close. Duran did good work and made Hagler uncomfortable with a few approaches, but this is ATG boxing with ATG great boxers. Of course Duran did good stuff. Hagler still finessed Duran most of the time on the inside, bruised and battered him, but didn't blow him out of the water. Hagler was an ATG middle, number 2 or 3. And he had a few cerebral, performances which didn't have a lot of highlight reel moments. Big deal. If you know the fine points of the sport, this is STILL a pleasure to watch.
@@mortcola I think duran was in his 4th weight class. With age his body matured. Leonard was 6 years at least younger. He tried to brawl with duran but didnt get he was losing his strengh of speed as the fight went on. He was a pussy who retired cause a detached retina. 4 years later he filled out. Had no wear on his body. While duran. Hearns fought. Haglar had to drop weight. Had only 3 or 4 guys to fight. At that time Micheal Spinks fought at cruiser. 178 ? Haglar 165 or 168? Those two should have fought at a non sanction fight. That woyld have been the best fight of 80s. Haglar got robbed by the guy who faked a carerr ending injury. At least Ray Mancini fought Arguello for 15 rounds. Got caught with a left hook in 14th. Alexis was old and clever. Macinci was just caught flatfooted. Was not hurt but it sealed the fight. Mancinis reaction was classic. He just slammed both gloves into mat. He knew he made a mistake and it cost him. At end Arguello was a pure sportsman. Gave the 22 23 mancini respect. Rays bout against Kim was tragic. It took his life in a different look.
I was young during this Era, & wasn't into boxing, but now watching these boxers today duck & dodge potential great fights in fear of a lose make me appreciate this early Era even more.
Have so much respect for both these two men. Marvin thanked all his promoters who helped him all through the years…This was actually his first BIG money fight. Sadly, he was past his peak as an athlete/boxer but was so talented and determined he fought two more ATGs over the next four years. MMH was and will always be my favourite….still can’t believe he is gone. Can’t believe it’s been almost 40 years.
His peak was his fight with Hearns where he put it all together. Sorry I don't mean to sound rude. He even said so himself how he put it all together in that fight with Hearns. Then it was all downhill after that. First he lost his speed against Mugabi then Leonard took advantage of that, or Leonard tried to and lost! (Hagler won imo) Then he retired. Peak, means all coming together at once rather than one thing being better. His peak and peak performance was against Hearns. As was Hearns peak against Hagler. Neither fighter was the same again, it took a lot out of them. I understand you may mean peak as in physicsl prime et cetera 28 or 29 but brains and braun come together to make a PEAK Marvelous Marvin Hagler. 31 can be a perfect time for a lit of middleweights
@@andydnyc But Hearns though? How hours he lose a step then miraculously recover it 2 years later. You do get fighters making great performances older but this is different.
@@paulanthony5274 I think we'll have to agree to disagree, Paul. I think the Hearns fight was his peak in terms of achieving greatness and fame. However, if you're talking peak in terms of agility, speed, reflexes, timing, movement, athleticism, it's more like 82/83. There's a reason why fighters like Hearns and Leonard didn't want to fight him at that time and waited until 85 and 87. Hearns signed up to fight him in 82 and then thought better of it. Leonard talked about it in and 81 and 82 and also backed away from it.
There also a reason why theres weightclasses, and Leonard and Hearns were 147 pounders, not to mention the smallest and oldest if them all,Duran. If thoose small guys wanted to build up some before facing Hagler that isnt strange at all,Marvin was always well conditioned, why didnt he face them at 154 if he wanted them do bad? No because Marvin wanted to sit at hes prime and ideal weight waiting for 3 small guys to come up to him and give him moneyfights, all advantages was for Marvin because these 3 wasnt even 154 pounders like all others that challanged Hagler, they were even SMALLER.
@@Lyricistnz Big deal, numerous greats lost to lesser fighters. His career is much more impressive than Hearn's. Especially considering he beat skilled bigger men.
@@ironfist768 Bruh I laughed when he signed to fight Hearns. Wrong guy for his front foot style. I was impressed it lasted past a round. As I said, I thought Hearns was going to murder him in 11 seconds, count included. Was a slaughter
@@Lyricistnzyeah yeah let’s not forget about how Duran also beat the man who knocked hearns tf out in 3 rounds for the WBC middleweight title. All while he was way out of his prime and natural weight class.
Duran was truly amazing. As much recognition as he gets, he may still not get what he is due. He performed so well against larger elite fighters, the fact that he was giving up 8 inches in reach and several in height to guys like Leonard, Hagler, and most of the others is sometimes overlooked. Against Hearns he just had to give up too much, and maybe he got a bit careless due to the fact that Hagler couldn't hurt him. He had also just fought Pipino Cuevas, Davey Moore and Marvin Hagler, in succession before Thomas Hearns. What fighter would do that today? It's been said that Duran is the only fighter that could compete with Ali for the title, "The Greatest." I agree with that. "The Four Kings" elevated each other to levels that we may never see again, but with Duran's lightweight history he may have been elevated the most.
@Thomas Pondysh yes thomas 🥊 well put my man - no doubt these were the best times in boxing with the real grit best fighters all fighting each other- fast forward to today -no comment-this was boxings prime era🥊 👊Thomas
Vito Auntifermo went 15 rounds with Hagler before that fight , but the judges like always robbed Hagler , he beats duran pretty good and the judges score close fight ( no good) and he beats Vito pretty noticeable and freaking judges score it a draw .... WTF!!
I have so much respect for both of these fighters. The world paid attention and watched when these fights were made. I was looking forward to going out to Vegas to watch Spence-Crawford…They couldn’t figure out details and fought over social media….Ridiculous. In ten years both guys will regret the fight not being made as the world moves on and others will take their place. All of their posturing and ‘other side of the street’ talking will be replayed, and will diminish both of their legacies.
@@MrWoodCy I'll give the benefit of doubt to Spence-Crawford and blame the ones behind the scenes. All involved will regret it in ten years if it never gets made. That being said, maybe we will see it in 10-15 years but as an exhibition match? 😆 SMH
Roberto Duran fought pipino Cuevas, Dave Moore and Marvin haggler in that same year 1983 What else can you ask from a fighter? Unbelievable athlete. One of the greatest ever.
@@deanporter846Uggh!🤦..Another from the "Marvin Hagler can do no wrong GLEE CLUB"... Hagler was exposed for his limitations when facing equal or superior fighters...🤷You definitely must have knee pads that Exclaim.."I drop for Marvin"...🤦..😵🤢🤮
Look at the listed reach Duran had in this fight. Giving away 8 inches in reach and 2 inches in height. Came up from Lightweght to a Middleweight where Marvin spent his entire career. Duran stood toe to toe and boxed very very well.
This was a very good technical fight by Hagler. He said later that he wanted to outbox Duran. I thought the scoring was fair. Hagler won the fight. But Duran gave him a good fight. This was when Hagler was clearly the best middleweight in the world, and probably the best since Monzon.
i was already OLD by the time these guys fought. i see a lot of comments about what a great middleweight era it was. well, all these guys were the greatest of all time. boxin never was better than this. or since than. god bless.
Don’t forget one guy showing up drunk to press conferences and talking about ‘sides of streets’ or the other guy posturing for years while never committing in words (definitely not actions) that he even wants the fight at all. Ridiculous
@@MrWoodCy If the "other guy" is Crawford then he definitely committed. You can't commit any harder than firing your own promoter. Al Haymon is the only one stopping the fight from happening.
What's really amazing about Duran was the way he fought bigger, stronger fighters nearly every fight after he left Lightweight and beat most of them on sheer ability. Just look at the "Tale of the Tape" for any fight from 1979 to the end of his career. He really was at a severe disadvantage in almost every fight. Sugar Ray Leonard was much bigger than Duran, height, reach and natural weight.
Without a doubt, the best 52 minutes I have spent on you tube. What a time machine!! I feel 41 years younger. For an old guy who couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag, for an hour, I Was Both Of These Guys. ps, and I'll look it up, but I hope Pat, Goody, and M. Marvin were together til the end.
How cool is it that between Duran, Leonard, Hagler and Hearns, they all fought each other and they all won and lost. Like the greatest round-robin in history.
@@handymanny6615 Even that part is great. People will be arguing about that until the end of time. Hagler or Leonard. Leonard or Hearns in the second fight. Doesn't even matter who got the decision now, but we'll still be arguing about it.
Great point, but 1 out of those 4 had to fight on his own terms, and had to duck Hagler at every turn, so obviously I'm not talking about Duran, or Hearns who at least had the Nuts to Fight Hagler in his prime. In theory this idea would have been ideal.
@@Jbf-76 he wouldn't be Sugar Ray now would he. But being retired for Six years and coming back to fight him is just as crazy as Duran fighting him his 1st fight at MW... Can't hate unless you fought on the biggest stage, chit the little stage . gtfohwtbs
He was not naturally a lightweight in 1983. He hadn't made 135 lb for nearly six years before the Hagler fight. Why do you think he was fighting at Welterweight and Light Middleweight, because he couldn't make lightweight. That would be like saying Margarito was fighting a natural flyweight when he fought Manny, totally not true.
True Warriors, I was fortunate enough to be watching these guys fight in their prime, it was a true golden age of boxing. 15 rounds, of non stop action. brilliant.
Both well inside the Middleweight limit with a Fight day Weigh in and a 15 Round Bout. No Weight Bullying or Cherry Picking with these guys. Absolute Galdiators.

This is from back in the days when the best fought the best. Two of the greatest of all time willing to fight each other. This was such an amazing era of boxing, with Hagler, Hearns, Duran, and Leonard, all fighting each other. This was an amazing fight between two of the greatest of all time.
Hagler without doubt was the slickest toughest fighting machine of his and arguably any era at his weight. Not many fighters can be called invincible but Marvellous Marvin Hagler absolutely was. What a privelige to watch.
He wasn't "absolutely invincible", he lost to SRL in his last fight, plus he had two losses on his record earlier in his career. I don't think the word "absolutely" means what you think it means.
@@beedettfree Aaron Pryor was a coked-out, smoked-out, doped-out junkie who got knocked out by some no named fighter Bobby Joe Young. A mysterious bottle of drugs helped him beat Alexis Arguello. The truth must be Known.💉💊🥊🤕👎
@MDBD yes, MMH was a magnificent fighter who carved his legacy out of hard work and sheer tenacity. That said, the OP claimed MMH was "absolutely invincible" but the data shows he wasn't. My point is, people shouldn't use words when they don't know what they actually mean.
Excellent fighters. All in all, Haggler's supreme fitness, bigger size, longer reach, and more variation seemed to overcome Duran's reliance on right-hand power counter-strikes. Duran did great considering his disadvantages. Haggler showed how much fitness matters, like a mini-Holyfield.
If it wasn’t for these guys, we wouldn’t know what professional boxing was really all about at its finest. I’m sorry to say, these times are long gone and probably will never return. Cherish these memorial fights and fighters because they are priceless! It you’re not old enough to know, or you’ve never seen these fights before, then you’re missing out.
Thanks for the upload..brilliant fight..and incredible camerawork..the ringside footage is amazing… you feel like your inside the ring… way better than todays broadcasting style..
Acknowledging that fight would spotlight how crappy todays fighters are in skill, but superb at dodging each other and taking enormous time off between fights. The sport today is garbage with many crooked beyond belief judges decisions also.
You can tell how bias these announcers are towards Duran. Duran most likely the greatest lightweight ever fighting the greatest middleweight ever. Take into account that Duran wasn’t by a long shot a natural middleweight and still gave Hagler a run for his money. That tells you how great Duran was.
Excellent fight with plenty of punches but very few 'bombs' thrown. No doubting Duran's courage but Hagler was streets ahead, and I'm amazed the judges scored it so closely. I only had Duran winning 2 or at most 3 rounds.
I agree. Although Duran fought magnificently and probably gave the performance of his career, I was surprised that the scorecards were so close. I gave Duran 5 rounds and had Hagler 7-5 ahead at the end of round 12 when the judges somehow had Duran ahead. Hagler handily won rounds 13, 14 and 15 to win a clear decision.
Duran was a great fighter but he didn't win any round in this fight with Haggler. He(Roberto) was tough by taking Marvin punches that would have dropped other boxers though.
@@jojolisticallyspeaking4266 you can't seriously say Duran didn't win a round. I am a massive Marvin Hagler fan, but Duran boxed brilliantly. He clearly won the 12th. Not even the most biased Hagler supporter could say otherwise.
I agree with you bro and I was there at Ceasars Palace that time and in my opinion Hagler won the majority of the rounds , my uncle gave Duran 3 rounds , the rest was Hagler 👍
a jab is so much more than a punch to land with pin point precision. it's a range finder, and a lot of times just used simply to interrupt your opponent's timing. not necessarily to inflict damage or even land cleanly.
What a fight! Hagler just edged it in my opinion. Brilliant switching of sides to disorientate Duran. Duran kept pushing despite the punishment he was taking in the closing rounds. What an effort to come up from lightweight and challenge the reigning middleweight champion in Hagler, who was battering everyone in his way. Legendary fight in a legendary era.
The scoring was ridiculous being that close …. Duran was tough and durable and had his moments … and a few rounds but this was hagler all day . Out paced and out punched Duran by a huge margin . He was in control the whole fight. A classic battle and respect to both legends but not as close as everyone makes it imo.
Of the three fights Hagler had with Leanord, Hearns and Duran, Duran fought Hagler the toughest. Duran was also a master technician who was incredibly smart in the ring. He matched up well with Hagler’s toughness and technical boxing abilities. He also wasn’t intimidated by Hagler. Hagler actually seemed a little intimidated by Duran at times. Hagler was a war-machine, but recognized what a legendary fighter Duran was and seemed a bit surprised how well Duran carried it into the Middle weight division.
I was fortunate to watch in the 80's the best fights of Hagler, Hearns, Duran and Sugar ray Leonard. It was the Golden era of the welter and middleweights in boxing.
I remember watching this fight live on my first ever dose of LSD. What a great fight! Even now, watching it again decades later.......I want them both to win.
That’s a true champion throwing right up to the final bell of a gruelling 15 round contest, he’s the best middleweight ever. The truly magnificent, Marvelous one.
To put this into perspective, Duran's performance would be like Hagler at 33 (the age he lost a controversial decision to Leonard) going up to Cruiserweight and trading with a prime Holyfield still in his 20s. Duran was a top 5 all-time great.
I remember going to Panama City in 83 in Marine Corps and all you could see downtown was hundreds upon hundreds of banners with Roberto on them he was definetly a national hero and probably still is
Hagler won but kudos to Roberto Duran for being able to take those hits from Hagler and holding his own when he's four divisions away from the natural MW class of Hagler, as well as considering the fact that Hagler stopped his previous 8 opponents and his next 4 after this fight.
Wow, according to the records Duran and Hagler both weighed in at 157 lb for this fight? But according to some people, Duran was still a 135 lb fighter even though he hadn't made lightweight for nearly six years before this fight and had absolutely no chance of making lightweight.
I boxed for fourteen years. Duran is naturally a lightweight. For him to fight someone of Haglers caliber and do as well as he did is sayin' something.
Gil Clancy said it correctly, Hagler was a thudding type puncher. Not the most snap fast twitch type but when he got in his high pace rhythm he unloaded combos up and down from all angles while switch hitting. While in rhythm was smooth and intelligent with feints head movement, waist movement that made up for any lack of snap. So determined, had an awesome super man jab where he could close very quickly from long range. He chased down Hearns and KO’d him with it. Man was deadly. Duran did very well to survive but it was not close and I’m sure he was very sore all over for a week
Clancy never let a chance to put Hagler down pass by. Listen to his call vs Mugabi, you'd think Mugabi was outclassing Hagler until Clancy has no choice but to acknowledge that Hagler is breaking Mugabi down. Also listen to Clancy continue to say Hagler "can't get off" vs Leonard. Clancy wrecked both Mike and Jerry Quarry, he was highly over rated. He sure was a jack ass in Cooney's corner vs. Foreman!!!
@@kevindean1327 sure if you say so, but he still correctly identified the way Hagler throws his power shots. All these old trainers have dirt on em. Including Angelo Dundee who cornered Ali when he had no business being in there. Eddie Futch is the only one who can be glorified. Him stopping Ali Frazier 3 probably saved his life. It’s a hard ball world kid
I love both fighters but to say Duran was way behind and sore is not what Great fighters do? From feather to a legit Great lightweight vs a Big strong legit Middleweight Destroyer? Duran took him to the brink and was never hurt! Give Duran his due he fought all the greats past his prime in their weight class not his!!
by the way Duran started breathing heavily around the 4th or 5th round I'd say it's a pretty safe bet he wasn't as prepared for this fight as he had people believe. now the Duran that beat Leonard at the Brawl In Montreal, THAT Duran would have given Marvelous a serious run for his money. but it also shows the greatness of Duran. a natural lightweight being in mediocre shape and still lasting 15 rounds with arguably the greatest middleweight of all time.
IMO, I’d be hard-pressed to find anyone at 147, past or present, who would be able to beat Montreal Duran. I’d say Pacquiao, Spence, and Crawford won’t defeat him.
Duran beat Leonard in Montreal fair and square but it was really Leonard's decision to stand toe-to-toe and trade punches w/ Duran that lost him that bout. Leonard said it himself that Duran's constant use of pejorative words during the promotional period angered Leonard so he wanted to beat Duran at his own game to prove a point. It was the wrong choice and I think the Leonard who fights his usual fight would beat Montreal Duran.
@@kawaiiafangirl The two fights of duran and leonard are very interesting. IMO, I honestly believe that if leonard had fought montreal duran the way he did in his second fight, he would lose by a wider margin. In the first fight duran was extremely good at closing distance. Contrary to what many people believed, leonard did try to use his movements in the first fight, but duran could keep up with him. His feints, fast jabs, quick and agile footwork, and as well as cutting off the ring allowed him to match leonard's movements. You could see that duran was able to corner leonard many times in the first fight or catch him as he was circling out. On top of that, when duran did get on the inside, he was able to grapple, wrestle, and use his inside game to keep leonard in place which prevented him from moving freely. Montreal duran was not easy to get away from even with leonard's quick movements. Duran will catch up and he did many times. Leonard's best bet would've been to punch and fight duran to keep him from crowding him. On top of that, leonard needed take a step or two, punch, take another step or two, throw a combination. You can't keep someone who has fast feet, is smart, and can cut off the ring off of you by just using quick movments. He needed to catch duran while he is moving to keep montreal duran off of him. That's obviously a lot more difficult than expected because duran had great headmovement going forward and used his counters very well to close distance. Leonard needed to time and punch duran while also staying off the ropes, that is what would've beaten montreal duran. Leonard did do a couple things better in the second fight which was to taunt duran, use better inside fighting/grappling, and more uppercuts to stop duran's advances, but this was against a duran that was not near the physical levels of montreal duran. On top of that, in the second fight, duran was still able to close distance fairly well until the "no mas" end. I think that the highest chance of leonard beating montreal duran would be to use the new skills in second fight with the same strategy in the first fight. Focused on fighting duran and moving only when you need to will keep leonard off the ropes will allow him to beat duran. but what do I know :)
@@bobbyboy900 agree to disagree. Leonard himself said that he tried to beat Duran in his own game bc Duran frequently used homophobic and misogynistic terms against him in the lead-up to the fight. The commentators even talked about how flat-footed Leonard was and that he wasn't dancing like he normally does. Throughout the entire bout, they were questioning why Leonard was fighting Duran's fight. Yes, Duran is better at slipping punches than people think. Yes, he had a good counter right. Yes, he made frequent use of his feints. But it doesn't change the fact that Leonard didn't use a lot of lateral movement and go in-and-out like he was expected to. Duran looked great at cutting off the ring only bc Leonard wasn't trying to move like he normally does. If Leonard doesn't move, then Duran gets close and looks even better because of his inside fighting which again, is his game. Duran had been said to balloon up to 175 lbs. after a fight for a couple of years even before the Brawl in Montreal so Duran's commitment was already questionable. If you watch Duran against Edwin Viruet, Viruet had some success against Duran bc he mostly boxed, stayed outside, and kept circling Duran. Viruet however, didn't have the length, speed, power, reflexes, natural size, and most likely, footwork of Leonard.
Duran was the greatest of the 4 kings. Hagler never fought outside middleweight, Leonard adapted the rules to his advantage, Hearns was also great but Duran would fight anyone any weight even past his prime.
Star studded audience! Billy Crystal, A young Larry Holmes, Hitman Hurns,Redd Foxx. Great classic from 2 legends. The ref let them do their thing and didn’t interfere every 30 seconds. Despite Durans many low blows. One of those good classic fights worth watching over and over again.
One the all time classic fifteen round battles. We will never see bouts of this calibre ever again. Respect to both these absolute legends.
Duran, supposedly past his prime, stood in with the marvelous 1. Giving & taking for 15 rounds. I highly respect both of these fighters. Hagler 1 of the best middleweights ever. This was a great, great match up./ Fight

Unfortunately video tape is harder to restore than film due to it's relatively low resolution ranging from 240 to 330 lines back then.

What about Tommy he no the ram flat on his face
@@Argee52 both Marvin and Roberto were wary of the ‘ liver punch ‘ look at their defensive right hand . Good fight though .
@@Argee52 Hearns never dominated Duran on the inside - few did. Tommy just blasted Duran with his bazooka right hand from way outside
Have so much respect for both these two men. Marvin thanked all his promoters who helped him all through the years…This was actually his first BIG money fight. MMH was and will always be my favourite….still can’t believe he is gone. Can’t believe it’s been almost 40 years.
I'm not sure he was past his peak. I think his peak was 82/83. You could see in his next fight though, against Roldan, he had lost a step.

2 great fighters
So glad to have grown up in this era, when boxing and boxers were actually great! Love this!
I would add Aaron Pryor to that list too when he was in his prime. Just relentless, non-stop fury.
@@ivanjulian2532 A questionable decision, in Las Vegas, SRL mostly empty showboating.
Duran was an all-time, all-time great. Crazy as hell, but a beast.
I Love Legendary Duran, but Marvelous Al'hamdulillah is the Middle Champion of the World !!!!
Hagler was a natural middle weight, Duran was a light weight that held up and had the power punch to succeed at this division against Iran Barkley.
@@fernandochu iran barkley vs marvin hagler ?? Neve fitgh why
An underrated fight, idk why nobody talks about it.
Talked about all the time on forums
Acknowledging that fight would spotlight how crappy todays fighters are in skill, but superb at dodging each other and taking enormous time off between fights. The sport today is garbage with many crooked beyond belief judges decisions also.
Two great fighters. I love that they went toe to toe and didn’t do a lot of “dancing crap”. Jack Dempsey would have been impressed.
You can tell how bias these announcers are towards Duran. Duran most likely the greatest lightweight ever fighting the greatest middleweight ever. Take into account that Duran wasn’t by a long shot a natural middleweight and still gave Hagler a run for his money. That tells you how great Duran was.
Hagler never got the respect he deserved by the media. He literally had to legally change his name to get them to call him "Marvelous Marvin Hagler"
Bias towards Duran? What does your eyes see here? Duran got his head beaten on here; it's clear!
Duran wasn't a nice guy. That's why he didn't get the respect.
@@graylina1317 You obviously don’t know jack shit about boxing!
@@raymuniz113 🤣, no problem!
Duran, Leonard, Hearns and Hagler.
They all faced each other and produced great encounters.
GOAT middleweight vs GOAT lightweight. Beautiful boxing. RIP Marvelous
The same lame ass judging with Benitez and Kirkland , they both outscored duran by alot .... unbelievable with these judges sometimes 🙄
Duran 4 weight division up and still Hagler saying "Duran can't knock me out" says it all: GOAT!!!
At the end of round 12 Duran was ahead on all three judges scorecards. Think about that.
@@2vintage68 also Duran a boxer whose debut was in 1967 fighting the top 20-30 years later, crazy !!!
@2vintage68 Hagler fought Duran different.
I'm not seeing a crazy jab from these fighters. It's not as pin point as today. I see phenomenal effort, so respect.
I see great defense however
a jab is so much more than a punch to land with pin point precision. it's a range finder, and a lot of times just used simply to interrupt your opponent's timing. not necessarily to inflict damage or even land cleanly.
@@thejamnasium6447 This is True. Unless you're Larry Holmes. Effective jabs that are also accurate and damaging.
What a classic, thank you for this up! 👍🏼🤜🏼
I referred this fight to a young boxing coach at a gym several yrs ago and he was so intrigues.
@@zman8340 Absolutely, ridiculous scoring
@@zman8340Agreed.
@@zman8340nah the scoring was fine. This was a close fight and it ended up alright, the right guy won
@@cadereimer6163 I agree but it wasn’t that close.
Idk man.. sugar ray won the fight lol.
duran would clean up our divisions today, the guys i.q in boxing was something else, proper natural talent
Great fight, fair close decision. Hard to believe Hagler is gone...
It's insane to think that Duran went all the way up to middleweight to fight one of the best at that weight. what an amazing era in boxing.
Clash of the Titans.
That’s a true champion throwing right up to the final bell of a gruelling 15 round contest, he’s the best middleweight ever.
The truly magnificent, Marvelous one.
Una de las Peleas más bonitas que he visto / One of the most beautiful fights I've ever seen
Hagler was an underrated technical boxer I was extremely impressed with his skill in this fight...
To put this into perspective, Duran's performance would be like Hagler at 33 (the age he lost a controversial decision to Leonard) going up to Cruiserweight and trading with a prime Holyfield still in his 20s. Duran was a top 5 all-time great.
but the "no mas" fight ....
Different sizes and wright, for me a Truth warrior.

Yes, all top notch men.

@@marknorris1381 lmao. Do you understand how natural weight works?

Yup Marvin was my favorite of all time. Those were some bouts back in the 80s boy wow
by the way Duran started breathing heavily around the 4th or 5th round I'd say it's a pretty safe bet he wasn't as prepared for this fight as he had people believe. now the Duran that beat Leonard at the Brawl In Montreal, THAT Duran would have given Marvelous a serious run for his money. but it also shows the greatness of Duran. a natural lightweight being in mediocre shape and still lasting 15 rounds with arguably the greatest middleweight of all time.
@@paoloalcantara2465 Pac is just about the ONLY one who would have a chance. Spence or Crawford don't even deserve a mention honestly.

Duran was the greatest of the 4 kings. Hagler never fought outside middleweight, Leonard adapted the rules to his advantage, Hearns was also great but Duran would fight anyone any weight even past his prime.
