Thank you so much for posting these tabs! Maruru! If you play the toere, can you answer a question for me? Why do they play the drum with the slit facing themselves instead of the audience? Wouldn't it project more to face the slit out, at the audience? I live in Utah, but I just bought a toere in Papeete and I'm learning everything I can so I can drum for classes. I'm so grateful to have found your tutorials!
+Michelle Woolf Hello, I'm glad that the tabs that I do can be helpful :) That's a good question that you ask. Unfortunatly I only play drum for myself, so just take my opinion as a very subjective opinion : It might be because the stick has a better rebound on that part of the toere. I've saw recently a show where drummers puts the slit facing the audience. Lucky, we have microphone and speakers nowday, so it is not very important which way you face the toere as long as you have a sound engineer to level everything nicely for the public. To be honest with you, I have to protect my ears while playing toere when I put the slit facing myself .... So thank you for the tip :) For beginners, I suggest you to do "toere programs". Here is the link : www.polynesian-art.com/toere/toere-program/ If you want to, you can print out the toere tabs from my website : www.polynesian-art.com/toere/toere-pehe-spreadsheet/
