    This is perfect for beginners, wow! I've been bullet-journalling for a long time now, but you're so good at describing things thoughtfully and simply, for everyone to understand. I get so anxious whenever the New Year rolls around, knowing that a fresh bunch of people will want to try out a bujo for the first time, and inevitably get stressed from seeing all those high-effort, time-consuming, expensive spreads. They're lovely to see, but often really inaccessible to younger/poor/new journallers. This is a fantastic entry video, I'll absolutely be sure to recommend it to people in the future that are looking to get into bullet-journalling! ♥

    • @JashiiCorrin
      @JashiiCorrin  3 года назад +2

      Aww thank-you! 💜 I feel it's valuable to highlight options for people that are still decorative but accessible. The original video by Ryder Carroll is good for people who just want their bullet journal for simple productivity, but because so many people are enticed by the system *because* of the aesthetics, I think it's important to showcase ways that can be achieved straight-forwardly too 😊

    • @RoundSeal
      @RoundSeal 3 года назад

      @@JashiiCorrin I couldn't agree more! I can't do those really intense, gorgeous spreads that always make the rounds, but finding a really simple 'default' style that still allows for plenty of creative additions (when the spoons allow it) has been a really exciting journey in its own right. Surprisingly introspective lol. The spreads you showcase are such a great marriage of creativity and productivity; I've learned a ton and can't wait to incorporate a lot of those tips into my own bujo 😊

    My first bujo, back in April, was in a lined notebook that I had around the house. It was doable, but I found that I didn’t enjoy the size, and getting everything lined up nicely took forever. Plus, I really didn’t like the ghosting/bleeding. While I enjoyed the creativity of setting up monthly cover pages, I didn’t enjoy actually using the journal until I switched over to an Archer & Olive dot grid notebook in June.

    • @JashiiCorrin
      @JashiiCorrin  3 года назад +5

      If I were using a lined notebook fulltime it would have to be better quality than the one I used here 😅 the ghosting/bleeding would drive me mental unless I really changed the way I like to bullet journal.

    A great tip I picked up was to buy a small quilting ruler. They have grids printed right on them which makes it really easy to line up based on other lines or the horizontal lines. They even have some angled lines if you want to draw a 60 degree line or something.

    My 2019 bullet journal was in a lined notebook becuse I couldn't find a dotted notebook where I live. Your tips are great. There is a tip also with the ruler { you cut a long thin piece of your notebook, then you write the numbers for lines or grid on it and paste it on the ruler with clear tape} Now you don't need to count the lines any more, 😉😉😉

So yes you can make it work and it was alike great way to drive in and find out what I like and how to make it my own before throwing a ton of money on books if the system wasn't for me. Which lead me to find other notebooks of higher quality and more pages. Thanks for sharing great tips!

    These are great tips as I do have some lined journals that I don’t want to go to waste. I much prefer dot grid bc I’m sure I’d find those dark horizontal lines annoying when I chose to draw or use other shapes. I would prolly draw the shapes or whatever on white paper and glue them in bc that crossover line stuff would bug me. A lined journal would be awesome for a collections journal tho.😇. Thanks!

    • @JashiiCorrin
      @JashiiCorrin  3 года назад +4

      I think the lines would bother me too; if I were using a lined notebook for my journal it'd have to have pretty faint lines 😋 My friend used to have a lined journal called "the list book" which was essentially a collections journal before we knew what that was!

    One of my first journals was a leuchturm which is 80gsm, but the pages are coated, so some of the pens don't ghost as much as you'd think. I mainly used fineliners and coloured pencils in that journal, which worked fine. Sometimes if I used pens and there was bleedthrough, I would stick kraft or coloured paper in on the opposing side and use it as a quote page or something so it looked intentional. Or cover small patches with washi and stickers.
    A tip for making those vertical lines in a lined book is to use a set square. Most math kits (that include a compass and protractor) have them and are not expensive. You can make right angles and vertical lines really easily with them without having to do a lot of measuring.
    Another tip is to make yourself a template to slide under the paper and trace over. I used to do this when working with plain paper - I would create a grid page on a spare piece of paper, in sharpie or similar super-dark pen. When it's slipped under the page, you can see the lines through (obviously, this doesn't work with thicker paper but if you are using 120 or less it's fine), then you can just trace over freehand or with a ruler.

  • @fernandagoncalvesoliveirab2083

    This is perfect! People have the ideia that you need a lot of expensive fancy materials to have a bullet jornal. This also perfect for people like me, that doesn't know If this something that we can keep on until the end.

    It's a great idea for beginners to try out setting up the bujo in a notebook lying around the house already, I did the same and it let me figure out what I liked and what I need without worrying about ruining a nice, pricey notebook. Mine was B5 ruled and I learned soon it's a bit too much as a daily journal :D plus the paper in cheap notebooks is usually pretty terrible, the pages would warp because I used too much coloured pencils...

    Oh, I can def bujo in lined notebooks. This is my first year actually using a dot grid after starting to bujo 3 years ago now, and I was still in composition books. :)
    Another tip: get an inexpensive pad of grid paper and use that to work up more elaborate spreads more quickly that your can cut out and glue/tape in. It can be a really simple life saver when messing with word doc charts isn't your forte and you don't want to take the extra time to measure out the page to use a ruler.

  • @Alex-pb5rf

    My bujo last year was in a dotted notebook. I only used right about half of the notebook, so I quit that one to fill up a lined one I had started alongside it for something else. In my experience at least (mostly because my setups are suuuuuper simple) it's equally as easy for me to do it in a lined notebook and I'll continue to use the lined ones I have until they're filled. I'm still going to fill up the dotted one once the one currently in use is filled, but I definitely fell for the rampant consumerism of the community as a lot of people do.
    I really like the fact that you took the time to show more people that you really can make a bujo in any notebook and you actually gave me some inspo too :)

After having that one for I think 6-7 months the new year started and I decided to try out a dot-grid journal and loved it. I prefer them over lined paper. I LOVE this video! I really like to free journal in a lined journal and bujo in a dot grid... this took the “fear” out of having a bujo in a lined journal. Yep! Lined notebook, no problem! My work bujo is actually lined, as that’s the kind the office supplies and I don’t want to purchase anything if I don’t have too. I also use the cheapo ballpoint pens and highlighters they supply too. I’ve used lined for personal use too, especially when just starting out and not wanting to commit to new products.

    I actually already bullet journal in a 3-ring binder with lined paper. It's not pretty, but it's functional and works for me. I find that with the binder, I can take pages out or move them around if I have to. Also, I don't really need an index because I use dividers with tabs for the different categories.

    You can prevent blead through showing up on the next page, insert card stock in between the pages. You only loose the back of the page you wrote on. You can also add sticker paper on it if you want to use the back. However, that's more expensive.

    My current bullet journal is an old school book so its square grid and it’s worked really well but school exercise books are so small and thin especially after ripping pages out so I’ve bought some notebooks for £1 and I can’t wait to use them! They are lined paper however because the time I bought a dot grid journal I just felt too nervous to use it so I still haven’t

    My first bujo was in a lined notebook, but I'm greatful that the lines were pale enough to cover with drawings and it had pre measured out 1cm markings at the top and bottom of the pages. I also stuck 5mm grid paper in for certain things like mini calendars.

    Always fun to try new things. This year, I have the standard dotted for monthlies/permanent stuff, but I got a Moleskine lined pocket for dailies/weeklies/whatever brain dump I want. It ghosts a bit with tombows but overall not bad. I also like the smaller size for this just to experiment with different things.

    For ghosting and bleeding just stick the pages together! It's easy to find pretty cheap notebooks with a lot of pages, you'll get the same amount of use out of the notebook for the same price or less. On top of that, if you really mess something up it's easy to rip out that page without sacrificing what's on the other side

  • @theminnesotawitch

    Nope! I tried three times in a lined journal to do it. I ended up getting a blank one for my first "real" bullet journal and once I declared myself to like it, and then I spent $20 on a LT1917 when I was 12. Since then I've continued to purchase journals (or ask Mom when I really couldn't get it myself) and my recent one is an A&O I proudly use:D

    • @JashiiCorrin
      @JashiiCorrin  3 года назад +1

      Hard to say! It would have some perks; like not having what could be harsh lines cutting through your decorations. But if you're someone who likes things straight and evenly spaced, it would probably be a bit more challenging to draw that in 😄 depends on preference!

  • @huinismith

    I could bullet journal in a lined notebook if that's all I have (in fact, I've done it) but it wouldn't be my first choice of notebook. Since I tried dot grid paper, I never looked back. Now I don't like the in-your-face lined and grid patterns. I'm currently journalling in a lined notebook that used to be my brain dump and it's taking forever to finish. I hate writing on it, but I don't want to get rid of it because it was expensive and I like the cover (Maybe I should uncoil it and using it on another notebook...). Oh, and I'm a hoarder. This notebook was the reason I finally fell for brush tip markers: maybe those can help me to run out of pages sooner, lol.

    That’s all I’ve ever used because I just started bullet journaling and already had a stack of composition notebooks. I’m thinking of changing up the layout I set up for January, which I’m not sure is really working for me. (Trying the Frankenlite-style monthly task list.) Then again, I’m having trouble adapting to my new job and keeping up with my BuJo.
    P. S. Pigma Microns in 01 don’t bleed through 60gsm paper, although they still ghost. Ballpoints ghost on 60gsm paper.
