Hahaha the thumbnail though. I'm hype you're playing with one of my favorite xmen. It's so funny how Spiral and Cyclops land directly on their necks lol. You did not have to piece up Magneto in the end like that 🤣🤣
My favorite X-man has always been Colossus and I love how your play style really showcases how big guys like him should be used. 27 years ago, there'd most likely be a crowd gathered around you in the arcades because it was so rare to see pro Colossus players
One thing a lot of people forget about Colossus is Cyclops insisted he learn how to fight and not just smash things and rely solely on brute strength. He knows Judo and has trained a lot with Wolverine. He is also as fast and agile in his steel form as he is in his normal form despite getting significantly taller and heavier.
One of my favorite X-Men. I always thought they didn't put enough thought into his abilities thus nerfing his potential. His powers shouldn't just be the ability to turn metallic. He should have instead been able to turn his body into any metal he touched. An adamantium colossus would have been a better match for the likes of the juggernaut or the hulk. Sorry for nerding out on you.
Love the backstory of Colossus knowing judo. There can only be so many fighters that are about pure brawn, and in a brute strength matchup, one of them is just going to have more power than the other, so it's nice to have other elements that could be used as a differentiating factor to make the fight interesting. (Though I don't know if the writers ever tap into the judo background)
@@aaaaaaaaooooooo They have a few times. Particularly when Colossus is up against opponents as big and strong as he is. He uses his judo skills throw his opponents off balance and use their strength against them and he has specifically mentioned using the Judo techniques taught to him by Cyclops as he does this. Cyclops once said, although I don't know the issue number, "You know how to smash. If I wanted that for an X-Man I would have recruited the Hulk."
Capcom was pushing harder than anybody else around that time. Before that time the highlight was SNK, making a lot of creative fgs while Capcom was milking SF2... but with X-Men and Darkstalkers in 94 they managed to regain the status of fg superpower.
@@edwardgaines6561 And even though Darkstalkers and Marvel were already like a miracle in 1994, only 2 years later the cps3 came out with Red Earth, and SF3 the later year, setting the technical standards bar incredibly above the competition. Since the mid 90s Capcom magically started to evolve like an anime protagonist. Seriously.
Thumbnail made me realized that Capcom draw that specific set of sprites for every single characters in the game just to make Colossus move works. That's some dedication right there.
Thats maybe the other reason why they cut-off so many frames of this attack in marvel2: both for lacking RAM and not having to do uh 45 new frames for that haha.
Yeah it's a specific branch of command grab that requires exclusive new sprites instead of a plain command grab. Before Colossus there were already cases in other games like Art of Fighting 2. Overall (and naturally) it's a rare type of command grab. Right now i don't remember examples in other fgs besides from Capcom and SNK. One popular example of character with that kind of grab is Blue Mary. In her FF3 debut (95) she already had those grabs with specific sprites and shortly later she gained the slide, that became a staple.
@@SaikyoKoutei Yes, COTA has a small roster so it was fine making that kind of grab. But in later Marvel games where it's not possible to recycle most of these animations it's a trouble for the devs. Like, if Colossus was in MvC1 they would have to draw the spinning sprite for everybody besides Wolverine. That's already a good deal of an extra work and just for one character's move, now let's not even mention MvC2.
@@carlosaugusto9821 It's actually not hard at all. The pixel art is actually drawn first, by a senior animator, then the frames are pixelated to create a good outline. Then the pixel artist does his thing and completes it.
@@marcusbullock630 Are you kidding me? Capcom got very lazy with these sprites during MVC2! The most infamous example being Rogue and her "move steal." I know it's a lot of work to redraw sprites, but the subject matter, X-Men, demands it!
Did NOT KNOW Colossus could charge through Magneto’s attacks. Things like that and Iceman not taking chip damage…Capcom poured so much love into this and Marvel Superheroes
@@itsBATMAYNE I can't say it's a waste mainly cause it's easier to do. animating like this is costly and way more time consuming. stuff like this almost bankrupted SNK with KoF 12/13. my thing is at least do what arc does with 2D over 3D.
@@zerobeat032 And people easily forget (or ignore for the sake of their argument) that the 2d fg industry only survived on recycled assets. Like, Capcom made Wolverine sprite in 1994 and besides a few new moves, never needed to work on him again until the death of the classic series in MvC2 from 2000. The first couple of SF2 yearly updates were literally the same game, and only later a few new chars came out. And since SFA from 1995, those sprites were recycled until MvC2 and a few lasted until CvS2. SNK and Midway in the early 90s worked more than Capcom in their sequels (MK2-3, FF2-3, AOF2-3, SS2-3), but eventually they gave up to recycling sprites as well. Arc Systems also only updated their sprites once from the first GG then started recycling like everyone else. But since everything in gaming in the 90s was so new and innovative and all, and it was the boom of fighting games, those practices were kinda forgiven. But in fact charging full price for SF2 updates was a bigger ripoff than most yearly dlc character updates today (not that I'm defending it either).
@@carlosaugusto9821 yeah, the sprite recycling was real back in those days. Morrigan is a damn meme because of it lol. and outside of like one overhaul from 95 to 96.
