It was Johnny Depp's idea for his character not to speak so much. He originally had more lines.

      made the character more genuine

I would say his lack of speaking says more to him, there are so many points where if he spoke it would just break them apart quickly such as the scenes near the end before he runs away and everything goes downhill

5 years later Depp and Crispin Glover had a short scene together in the gorgeous "Dead Man". While Glover wasn't bullying Depp, he certainly was incredibly strange and ominous.

The bugs are probably what we call “love bugs.” They get the name because when mating they will join together and fly around like two-headed well, bugs. They can swarm too. It’s not uncommon to wake up and find 500 dead on your front porch. Drive to work and there are 100 splattered on the front of your car.

Another neat fact is that there was a short-run comic book sequel. It's ok; the art style is a nod to the Beetlejuice animated series which was an interesting choice.

Heart felt film. Depp did a great performance. As you noted, very little dialogue for his charcater. So he had to 'act' out the emotion through facial expressions and body language, He did a great job.

      Until "Edward...",
      Depp was known
mostly as a TV teen idol
from the original "21 Jump Street"
      on the Fox network.
He'd done John Waters' "Cry Baby",
      but the public really didn't
think of him as a movie star
      or as a serious actor.

Great video. The ending commentary about people in their differences... I have absolutely no problem with people celebrating the differences, I will be the first person in line to defend somebody is right to express themselves and be different as it worth... When people expect special dispensation based on their differences, that's where I draw the line

Vincent Price technically had ONE more performance after Edward Scissorhands. He provided the English narration for Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris (then called Euro Disneyland). They removed it not long after opening in 1992, but it was restored in 2019 when the ride underwent a massive refurb.
Also a little fun fact. The shopping center featured in the movie is in Lakeland, FL. I’ve visited it several times but never made the connection other than thinking it seemed really familiar until I saw the movie again awhile back and it clicked... and subsequently blew my mind.

During my visit to Universal Orlando in its opening year, they had some of the topiary sculptures from the movie on display, where one could easily see they were fake.
As I understand it,real ones can take several months to create, depending on how complex they are.
