  • How to replace the driveshaft gearbox oil seal and how to top up the gearbox gear oil
    The seal was £5.99 and the gear oil was £6.99 both delivered free from Ebay
    The gearbox on this 307 1.6 hdi holds around 2 litres of gear oil..
    you do not have to buy new gear oil as the old oil you have drained out can be used again..just use new oil to top up
    The job took around 2 hours and no special tools were needed.. so it's a suitable job to be done by a DIY mechanic

    Thanks for this. Have the workshop manual which describes the filling process (and confirms the air breather filling requirement) but the pictures aren't great so was looking for some real world visuals to help and you've done that perfectly, thank you.

    People , good video, warning if u use thinner gear oil in there, it may come out the seals, its like water,... use 85/90 , not low viscosity....

    Got this same issue on my 206 2.0hdi. I just ordered the seals. On the 206 its easier to get access to fill up the gearbox.

    The gear oil filling point is actually on the end of the gearbox behind the nearside suspension leg remove the 19mm bolt then with the vehicle on level ground fill until it seeps out of this hole then replace the bolt

      Think Conrad is right alright, according to Servicebox it's called the "gear-box filler cap" (dv6ted4 engine). But a lot of people don't use it because it's more awkward since it's on the side instead of the top. It's probably better to do it that way though since you can't overfill or underfill. Or you could always just use the breather to fill it, and just remove the filler cap so that it leaks out when it's full.

    Hi, I have a 207 1.4 hdi. It's been making fair grind noises whilst driving like from the gearbox. But other day I was driving and it would not go in gear. Towed it home. Now it changes gear when engine is off and starts in gear and drives but won't change while started! I googled the oil, put 2 litres in. It then drove spot on! But when I done full lock it made grinding noises, like teeth grinding, even more when I turn lock on 1 particular side . Anyway then gears went stiffer and i looked outside and it's leaking oil! Do you think it's this seal? If so how much and is it easy job? Thank you

      Hi its very difficult to diagnose your problem without actual seeing the Car..I would take to a mechanic to look at, then maybe you could do the repair yourself, if you have the knowledge on how to do it..or let a garage repair it for you.

    Hello mate my girlfriend has just spent a lot of money to get a new clutch and the person fixed it it come back and the driveshaft seal had gone and leaked the gear box went two days later so she took it back to him and he put a new gear box in witch she paid for and his labour then got it back now the drive seal has gone again it’s 107 petrol do you no how much it will cost to get it fixed please

    • @BitsPieces

      HI, you would be best phoning around a few garages for quotes.. the seal itself is only a few pounds, it's the labour cost that are the main cost.. I would say it's a couple of hours work for a well equipped garage.

With oil leak from the turbine joint to e gearbox and vehicle doesnt move.. i.e., gears not engaging.... could this be similar? Any advice on this?

      Kai Salminen I don't understand what you are asking ie the turbine..The only problem with this car was oil leaking from the driveshaft oil seal and when stationery oil was dripping on the the road when the car was parked up

    If i take out a little right side driveshaft from gearbox oil must leak?If no leaking i have a tragedy dry gearbox? Its about 1.6 tdci focus. Is it diffrent manual gearbox Than 1.6 hdi i think no if is it same engine.

    • @BitsPieces
      @BitsPieces  6 лет назад

      Hi,yes it is the same engine ..the gearbox should have a filler plug undo that and a little oil should spill out,that shows there is gear box oil in it and at the right level..if none does spill out it might need topping up..it's very rare that a gearbox as no oil in it under normal use ..unless it's lost it all, via a big leak or cracked gearbox casing ..the shorter drive shaft is the one I think you have pulled out..that as a very long spline on it if you have not fully removed it that could stop any sings of oil showing too

    Hi mate, do you know if this could possibly throw oil up onto the back of the engine when driving at motorway speeds? My car keeps leaving small drips of oil everywhere and i've replaced: Rear main seal, head gasket and rocker cover gasket but there is still oil dripping from the car and it's hard to determine where it's coming from. the engine block is in almost mint condition and the back of the engine is wet with oil near where the gearbox joins

    • @BitsPieces
      @BitsPieces  7 лет назад

      stevob211 Hi, it would actually not throw that much oil up unless the gearbox driveshaft oil seal had really deteriorated ..you will see oil around the inner driveshaft cv joint and after the car was parked up oil drops on the floor directly under it..It's an hard one to call this as I can not actually physically see your car..If it's really bad I would take it to a garage so they can have a proper look up on the ramp

    • @mwmm
      @mwmm 7 лет назад

      Bits & Pieces thanks for taking your time to reply, sadly I've been to 2 mechanics and they all say different things which have all been fixed, my first mechanic now states there is no oil leaks when there clearly is! and the only time I do see oil is once I've parked up and one or two drips drop from the car

    • @BitsPieces
      @BitsPieces  7 лет назад +1

      stevob211 ..if you look at the start of the video you will see how the oil as been coming down the gearbox and then dripping on to the floor..It is clearly visible so very obvious to diagnose it was the gearbox driveshaft oil seal.any good mechanic would spot this..wherever the oil is coming from on your car may only be happening at high revs..so its a case of getting it up in the air ..someone then getting in to Rev the engine at about 3000 and seeing if any oil is coming from somewhere...

    No level plug is stupid. Even if you in theory never need to change the oil, there's moments when you need to top it up. I pulled out the drive shaft a bit too much during a wheel bearing change, and a few gulps of transmission oil poured out before I could push it in again. Now I've got no idea how much to add.

    No, adding grease won't keep the "clunking" down.
    This is not correct filling method. There is a level screw on the far end of the gearbox use that not a dumb advise

    • @BitsPieces
      @BitsPieces  4 года назад

      Grease is not being adding ..do you mean gearbox oil..the level screw as you call it, is not on this model of gearbox, so your advice is dumb..

    • @grahamwishart4832
      @grahamwishart4832 Год назад

      Grease in the CV joint won't fix the clunking. That's f**ked...new one needed. Cable tie will last about a day if your lucky. If it's a BE4/5 gearbox - which it is- it has a filler/level plug accessible from the wheel arch. 19mm socket needed.
