Totally unrecognized talent here. Josh proves that you don't have to have overly intricate chops or speed to be a great musician and songwriter. He brings a complete bag; Groove pocket, catchy licks, and a great voice. Total Powerhouse.
It's definitely hard especially at first. I'm a drummer and I'm trying to learn to play and song "come down" by anderson paak. At first the singing threw the drums off but after a while it seems to help me stay on beat and know where the song is going next, cuz I use the vocals as a cue all the time, now I'm my own cue.
Really cool. The emotion in the singing can match exactly to the emotion in the drumming like this. This can’t be done with a separate drummer and singer!
Euphegenia That’s actually a great point. I’m a drummer, and when I was needed to start singing at the same time, it was like learning the drums all over again. So much respect for this guy and what he can do.
Sure, it can. Points: A, you need a sober singer who LISTENS and B You need a sober drummer. That REALLY listens. C, you'll never find both, lol. Almost all the time, someone is beyond just slightly buzzed to where they are getting incapacitated. And NOBODY listens. This is why most covers SUCK. AND I prefer them because I like getting paid.
I’ve played drums for decades and just started singing lead. It takes me a good amount of effort to get the mechanics, especially when the lyrics don’t fall on the beat, but it’s so rewarding on a personal level. I’ve not heard of this man but he’s on a completely different level. Like Rainman.
Pretty much true. Bernard Purdie told me this is why Phil Collins always has another drummer w him. He drops time when singing. Nobody mentions Karen Carpenter :(
OMG about video end's performance ! If every humans on earth could give only 10% from the love of music this guy is giving to his song, on humanity, No more war for sure ! I love you Josh :)
Modern day one man band. His voice reminds me a bit of very early Steven Tyler, among others. It's like he had a band, kicked everyone out and said he was going to do it all by himself, and actually did it and the band said they agree to just leave. Great grooves, great voice. And such a fantastic music lesson, very helpful. It's a game changer for a drummer once you sing along, if not the whole thing, key parts of a song.
Thanks for the reply. I mentioned Phil Collins as he is my personal inspiration. He really had the lead singer position put on him as a result of having such a great voice to replace Peter G, I have seen him live and did not notice any tempo issues while playing. Perhaps Chester took over drum duty for visual appeal as Phil had medical issues which effected, now ended his drumming. There are many great singing drummers, I remember the Dave Clark Five in the early sixties and Levon Helm and Karen Carpenter ,both were sensational. I must say Rodger Taylor must score an honorable mention because he sings such great harmonies. Playing drums and singing harmonies is like threading a needle in the trenches in World War 1 during an all out attack ! Hey ,nearly forgot Buddy Miles and another personal favorite Richie Haywood with Little Feat. I will stop before I remember another .
I've found that hearing all the different parts clearly is half the battle. As Gavin Harrison talked about in his Drumeo episode, it's really important to open your ears and hear the whole band when you're playing and not just focusing on your own playing. It's kinda the same thing when you're playing with all four limbs and singing at the same time, then you have five voices you have to be able to hear clearly just coming from yourself. The New Breed books by Gary Chester have really helped me with this, as well as taking every opportunity to sing backup vocals with bands I'm in, no matter how way out of my comfort zone it is :)
COOL, thanks to playing in worship bands I started singing and drumming a little while ago, now I try to sing everything when I play drums, and other rhythm section instruments!! I definitely think this is GREAT!!!
Difficult to explain from time to time. Even more difficult to do. This guy knocks it out of the park tho! Makes a lot of sense what he talked about. I’m fairly decent at playing and singing at the same time. He done threw in a keyboard...... MIND BLOWN!
I love his approach to playing, a lot of times drummers try to explain improvisation etc. by squeezing general ideas into small boxes(exercises etc), which sometimes destroys the concept of playing freely(but sometimes works well, don't get me wrong). Josh just picks rythms from his imaginations, which demonstrates what improvisation and personality in music is all about!
I can only recommend you to try it, even if you don't wanna do it on stage. But for practice it will totally link new synapses in your brain if you play and sing along, e. g. to songs you like. Try System of a Down for starters, it's a lot of fun!
That's how a snare should sound like. That's how a singer should sound like. That's how a keyboard should sound like. That's how a kick should sound like. That's how cymbals should sound like. That's how tom's should sound like.
This was a very interesting and informative lesson. Never heard him til now, definitely checking him out. I came away with a few things I’m going to focus in on my practice time,
As a singing drummer myself I had to laugh when Josh played "Come Together" as it is my first song that I sang when drumming. I think one really important thing is to over learn the words so you don't think about it. Even though your concentrating your really putting the brain on auto pilot, because if you put too much thought on say a fill ,you can loose the vocal line or over think the words you blow the drumming. It gets easier the more you do it. I had to sing to get the gig ,then it is lead vocal and all I did was say if Phil ( Collins ) can do it ,he is a mere mortal then I can ( or give it my best shot ) . However playing keyboards too , Josh you have my respect. Speaking of Phil Collins he is my hero and inspiration as he set the standard.
I love Phil but I think there were others doing it first. Karen Carpenter did it in late 1960s as a teen on a college tv show. Dancing in the Street as a jazz. It's unbelievable. Levon Helm. The Band. Bernard Purdie told me Phil has a 2nd because he drops time when doing both. I can certainly see that happening but I know BP just well enough to know he can be full of it. You don't mind tho because he'll say more useful stuff in a 45 minute clinic than three years of drum lessons, and be entertaining as hell while he does it. Just don't buy his WAY overpriced DVDs. They're filmed on potatoes and sound like crap.
Josh should DEFINITELY write a book about the concept he was talking about at 26:40 (he said it hymself). I think working on this can take us a long way on improving our time and ability to express in the instrument, on having better things to offer as musicians and ultimately: getting gigs..
omg OMG OH MY GOD hahaha incredible. Vocal/compositional movements akin to Stevie Wonder, then Tool, then Supertramp or Bob Dylan or even almost The Beatles wow !
i totally feel this 100% i LOVE the drums its been my main instrument since day 1 but i also have recently learned to love singing specifically songs like what incubus and simaler bands are putting out. to do both at the same time is hard but IF and when you can do it it is the most organic form of music making i can think of.
I’ve always loved that he plays with his sticks backwards. I do that too but I do it with 2B oaks so they wont break so fast. I wonder if he resorted to playing backwards due to sticks breaking a lot.
Second , I thought it was Josh Dun , but nevertheless, Josh Dion is a very creative , multi-skilled , amazing man ! Singing , playing electronics and drums at the same time needs a lot of discipline , control and balance , and he has mastered it by doing these three things at the same time !
Awesome! It's definitely the time efficient way to learn 3 instruments. ;) The only other guy I've seen play drums, keys and sing all at the same time is Paddy Steer, and he considers himself a bass player.
Totally unrecognized talent here. Josh proves that you don't have to have overly intricate chops or speed to be a great musician and songwriter. He brings a complete bag; Groove pocket, catchy licks, and a great voice. Total Powerhouse.

Recognised as a huge talent by the hundreds of thousands of fans who have watched these videos & the thousands who have seen him live.
His drums sound so pure and rich!! what a great mix. that snare just hits you in the chest!
Thank you! Josh's band is paris_monster: ruclips.net/user/parismonsterband Check it out!
I can barely walk and talk at the same time, this blows my mind
Anything you do 18,000 times gets easier.
Even for drummers ;)
It's definitely hard especially at first. I'm a drummer and I'm trying to learn to play and song "come down" by anderson paak. At first the singing threw the drums off but after a while it seems to help me stay on beat and know where the song is going next, cuz I use the vocals as a cue all the time, now I'm my own cue.
Kudos to the sound engineers on this session. His drum mix and sound is A+. So great to hear Josh's amazing talents. I'm blown away.
What a talent. His original stuff is totally original too, blends a bunch of genres. Truly one of kind.

44:54 for Rosanna by Toto.
first singer who never complains toooooo loud drums/cymbals.........
I just bought a SECOND PA because it doesn't need subs on drums. I do both singing and drumming
I’ve played drums for decades and just started singing lead. It takes me a good amount of effort to get the mechanics, especially when the lyrics don’t fall on the beat, but it’s so rewarding on a personal level. I’ve not heard of this man but he’s on a completely different level. Like Rainman.
Thanks Drumeo, you are killing it with your guests! This guy is incredible...
What a talent. Beautiful voice and great songwriting, too! People like him lead by example and show us that boundaries are much further than we think!
Glad you like the songwriting! It's the most important part of it all for us. More here!: ruclips.net/user/parismonsterband
One of my favorite all-time Drumeo videos. Outstanding information, encouragement and groove for miles
Glad you enjoyed, Jeremy! Check out more on the full-band's RUclips channel: ruclips.net/user/parismonsterband
Levon Helm is more than happy watching this from heaven. Thanks for this!
One of our favorites!
This is the next level stuff, singing, drumming, keyboarding and flair.
So cool. Another good exercise, sing the bass line or guitar riff to a song while you play the drum part.
General public: Men can't multitask. They just can't.
Josh Dion:
“Hold my Beer”
Pretty much true.
Bernard Purdie told me this is why Phil Collins always has another drummer w him. He drops time when singing.
Nobody mentions Karen Carpenter :(
Very inspiring. Used to do backing vocals and this video encourages me to try it again :')
OMG about video end's performance ! If every humans on earth could give only 10% from the love of music this guy is giving to his song, on humanity, No more war for sure ! I love you Josh :)
I love Paris Monster! So happy you got Josh on drumeo!!!
Josh is awesome! He has rehearsed at my studio American One Productions in NJ. He is one of the nicest guys around!
I need more of this stuff! Once again Dave, you really have come a LONG way as interviewer!
The dead sticking on the tom in A vision complete is so musical. Love it. Awesome video!

Thanks, Matt! Glad you enjoyed!
this guy is incredible. . .great singer, great keyboard player and great drummer as well

AMAZING drumming grove feel!
Thank you so much!
I really like this guy. So original!!

His tune A Vision Complete, as well as the others, reminds me of a Stevie Wonder type of vibe. Man this dude is talented. Love his music.

Just played with this guy last night @ The Thirsty Hippo in Hattiesburg, MS! Cool dude, and Paris Monster is a sick band!
YES - love this guy

Josh Dion is a national treasure.
Yes, yes, yes, exactly what I was looking for! Thank you, Drumeo!
He dont need friends 😎
a good friend for himself )
Jajajaja
better alone than in bad company
Helps when there's one though: ruclips.net/user/parismonsterband
That happens when you have bad members in your band LOL
Really talented man! An inspiration for me!
Met him when Paris Monster played Malvern, amazing guy and one hell of a musician!
Can't wait to get back to Malvern! Love The Cube!
holy fuck is this amazing or what.
Josh must be seen live. Just saw him on tour with The Darkness. He creates such an infectious vibe.

This was a very interesting and informative lesson. Never heard him til now, definitely checking him out. I came away with a few things I’m going to focus in on my practice time,
There was once 4 great musicians. And they got old and died eventually. And they all reincarnated into 1 person combined. His name is Josh.
Ha! Full band's RUclips channel here: ruclips.net/user/parismonsterband
Super interesting lesson. I'm currently working on that skill after our singer's departure. I wanted to sing forever but never got the guts to do so.
Go for it!
7:12 Roger Taylor, obviously...
he has some Mean Independence, Nice Nice Nice!!! Beast!!!

Cantar es el primer sentido de el ritmo la música las ideas y este hombre es pura inspiración natural gran músico
This guy is incredible. Love his version of Neil Young's "Ride My Llama" from this.
With an extremely rare talent like that, it baffles me that this Josh Dion guy is not a household name yet!!

Amazing! You have to heard Tiki Cantero, from the argentinian group Aca Seca Trio! he is an amazing singer and drummer too
I’ve always loved that he plays with his sticks backwards. I do that too but I do it with 2B oaks so they wont break so fast. I wonder if he resorted to playing backwards due to sticks breaking a lot.

: Æ : tbh , I know it .
No hate but I’d much rather have Dion rather than Dun. Nothing against Josh Dun or 21P, but Josh Dion is a huge inspiration.

Man, this guy encourages me to start singing in my band
Get a good voice coach. Save lots of time. City colleges are WAY cheapest for music school ed. Average 20-25/hr.
Very good.
Such a badass
30:29 this dude is killing it + he makes some funny acting hahaha what a genious!
28:50 - I wonder, how many drummers can say, this is posssible for them to play.
This dude is a Phenom!
Thank you! Hopefully you'll enjoy the full-band too: ruclips.net/user/parismonsterband
Holy shit, that first song he played was sick.
