I was just diagnosed with ADD. I’m 40, and I’ve been struggling my whole life with all of this. I’m really upset that I’ve been living this way the whole time and I’m wondering of what I could have accomplished if I just had a little help. I start medication tomorrow, and tomorrow starts the new version of myself. Take care everybody.

Anyone else sittin here on their first dose of treatment as an adult after unknowingly suffering from ADHD all their lives? Yeah, me too. Except I just spent 8 hours writing my novel, which would normally be 10 minutes trying to begin writing my novel followed by 7 hours and 50 minutes of gaming. Seek treatment if you think you need it, seriously.

Here because I though ADHD was where your hyperactive as a child. Turns out it’s about attention and focus also. I’m always putting my keys down not paying attention where I put them then spending hour’s searching for them only to find they are right in front of me. I have trouble focusing on what people have just said to me, literally had a gaming addiction to the point I no longer play and sold all my consoles and computer because I can’t say no even if I have important stuff to do. Was always clever in school but underachieved because I left study to the last minute and still do to this day. I know what need to be done but always put it off until the last minute. I thought I’ve just been lazy all my life and couldn’t help it but I’m starting to think I have an issue or something deeply wrong with me.

Literally everything he says is 100% accurate, it’s almost funny
Experienced it my whole life. Always deliver every single assignment I’ve had last minute (and write it then too).
Always told I’m smart and that I’d do so great if I applied myself. I rarely payed attention in class and never did homework, but still got straight A’s up until year 9 (not claiming I’m a genius, my grades lowered bit by bit when I got older and subjects got more complicated).
A possibility is that I developed a work-around to procrastinating homework: I developed the ability to process information more effectively or structured as a symptom of add. Could also be that I developed memorization techniques that after loads of time became second nature. I’m still way better at learning and memorizing through listening.
My mom and I have a theory on how people with add or adhd get great grades even though they don’t pay attention in class. She explained that her friends daughter doesn’t pay attention either but gets surprisingly good grades. The thing is, sight and hearing are independent. With add I don’t need to FOCUS my vision, I just need to move it around and look at things. When doing that, I catch audio from the teacher speaking instead of other sounds, even though I’m looking away (subconsciously). Both I and my teacher are surprised when I’m caught staring into open air and asks what he talked about earlier (and I get it correct).
Has anybody else experienced similar things? I feel like my personal experience isn’t all that uncommon.

When I was a teacher I had a student who couldn't hear the classroom discussion unless he was turning his chair around and crawling on it. While he was doing this he could answer questions. When I asked him to sit still he couldn't hear the discussion. At some point this needs to be managed because it distracts other students. This was an alternative high school.

OK well I have PD and F. I don't remember it really being a thing in primary school as I was a "gifted child" and could just do stuff really easily, but I definitely remember doing a lot of things at the last minute in secondary school onwards, procrastination, getting easily distracted and so on. Oh and definitely a messy house. Thing is I was never told the whole "pull up your socks thing" as most teachers just didn't care enough, and I masked my last minuteness well enough to get by. I am very all or nothing. I either work super hard in all aspects of life, or I don't. That coupled with perfectionism I've had since forever means I've been trying to find a balance for the last couple of years. It feels super weird and out of my bubble of not knowing any better, but I'm trying.

I was diagnosed a few years ago and just kind of blew it off. Then when I look at all the stupid things I have done like waiting to pay bills despite having the money, inability to organize things and keep them organized, not being able to start anything unless there is external pressure, inability to listen to casual conversation to the point I am almost not present, etc, and I wonder if I should go back and seek treatment. My denial I have a problem I think stems from how much I have done in my life (restored cars, houses, successful in making art, etc). Massively talented (and mostly successful) but I live my life on a day to day basis in a literal tornado of disorganized chaos. Maybe 8 days out of year I actually get what I want done. I used to think it was just a lack of enough effort when it really is due to not being able to organize things and plan.

Then on my way home I realized I had forgotten to put gas in the car and I was stranded on the road. I had left my wallet at the office and I forgot to charge my phone so I had 1% of battery enough to call my husband to pick me up. When I told him where I was he pointed out I had been driving in the opposite direction to the house, I didn't even remember how I had gotten there. And this has happened every day since I was a kid. I always got in trouble cause I forgot to do my homework, lost my books, even my school bag. If this isn't ADHD then I don't know what is.

Oy. I also was late to my Dr apt by about 10 mins once. I had to pay a $100 fine to the office and reschedule. Three days later they sent a letter, dropped me as a patient for that 10 mins, bc that's how they treated a 36yr old just diagnosed with adhd. I lost all treatment for it, as well as the antipsychotic meds which had me waking up trying to drive into a river, and this small bizarre approach to antitreatment, was during a missed kidney stone that had been on several tests, for maximum gaslighting effect, while it destroyed life for a literal year.

I wish I had the focus to legit become an awful terrorist news story, but the realistic plan is probably closer to dying from OD on whatever I can use to prove illegal incorrect treatment is objectively more comfortable than certified care, and I'm not sorry at all for any bad outcome, especially if it's inconvenient and preventable.

To those that say ADD/ADHD does not exist. I tried to believe so as well. I felt the symptoms all my life long, but I thought I could solve it by time with practice and discipline, going vegan doing extreme workouts.
I hate mistreating my body with medicine and I don't believe in incurable sicknesses. When it comes to myself, I fight, and I say it like I mean it. I fight and don't care whether I drop dead while doing so, because I won't let this woman(me) suffer anymore. I will protect her and I am f** willing to die for her anytime. My life definitely reflects that. If you have suffered all your life long, death is okay, fight is a must but suffering in misery is unacceptable. I say to myself "Honey, In life you have to run, It's okay if you drop dead on your run, but you can not stand still. Standing still is worse than dieing."
Soooo not believing in ADHD I fought with all my power and intelligence, research lifestyle, spiritual work, HIIT workouts and blabla. BUT as some you know, you can't fight ADHD. When you have ADHD you are everywhere, emotionally and mentally. You can not work even if you want to. Getting fired one job after another, despite my deadly drive YOU don't know how it feels.
On the day my doctor approved to help me, I was ready to take my life. I was angry, on that day, another fuc**** stupid doctor told me, ADHD doesn't exist, that's it's all my fault, that I'm not trying hard enough. If that's true, I don't want to live, because I could not solve my problem with practice and deadly ambition.
Today I'm on meds the first time. I understand now. Why my mind wasn't working the way, it was supposed to work. All my life, I couldn't react to people attacking me, because my reaction was always delayed: Sometimes I ended up hearing my feelings/thoughts only days after an incident.
You know how it feels, when you had something to say, but you didn't and you regret now. Do you know how it feels, if you can't? You are deaf to everything, even to your own feelings. Also for some kind of reason, you can not explain to yourself why? You say to yourself everytime. Next time, next time I will do so, but everytime it's the same and it's NOT out of fear. Do you know how anger builds up in oneself? YOU DON'T. THIS! is how depression starts. Not depression is the cause. YOU giving your deadly best to listen, but then misunderstanding it in an unbelievable way. When the world reacts like "your best, is piece of sh** you are getting me into trouble. YOUR FIRED!" When you need to learn stuff, which you don't need to learn actually, they are just effortlessly there in normal human beings.
It's true, kids are inattentive, they need to play hard and jump around, like cat's do when they are little. It's true ADHD might get mistreated and overdiagnosed. Then please say THAT's the mistake. Write a book about that. Write a book on how the government makes us sick with stuff from the supermarket, chemtrails, genmanipulation, brainwashing through media, the school and work system. Everything goes hand in hand. But don't waste your time. You can not tell me that what I have has to do with discipline. I thought exactly like you do, I neglected it. I thought I will not be a victim of my body. I will simply cure it, I will train.
"What you think is what you attract (spiritual work)" I decide where I go but nature was stronger. I realized, the more I denied it (ADHD not the symptoms), the worse things were. But I'm on medication and I'm good now. Today I've spoken up for myself a few times. The first time, was simply infront of a baker, an idiot who was making fun of me because I needed time to chose what I wanted to have (which is a given). Usually that kind of moment would take me a lot of energy and I would be ashamed of everything. But today reacting felt so effortless.

    • @jynemorgan

Unfortunately, I am experiencing horrible side-effects too. Some days it works, some days it doesn't. I used to take the Herbalife Tea (Peach taste, because the regular one tastes horrible). I have tried some other products besides that, since it's so expensive. But I have to say that this one comes "Focus-wise" very close to the effect which Ritalin has on good days. You are focussed and awake and that's good but that's it. The other ADHD symptoms still remain. I do daily Yoga (off meds) and it does a lot to me. (Off meds) I am able to keep my energy to myself these days, kind of had a careless feeling. Think it's related to more than yoga though. I am still testing this one, but I think we need to do things make us get out of our brain. It seems that they don't really know the cause of ADHD, sure they say is genetic but still... it has to have a cause. Could be neglect, trauma, emotional abuse, could happen to many kids that stay inside a lot on their computers. Emotional abuse and childhood trauma seems to physically damage the brain/prefrontal cortex of the brain. I'm saying this carefully, since I am not a doc. When you are emotionally abused especially since childhood, you don't know that. Since that is all that you have known. I thought I was quite happy before I figured this one out, but then I started to understand myself better the more I read into this topic. If I didn't go with the attitude "Circumstances don't make a man, they reveal a man" and put myself under stress to get to know myself better, I wouldn't have known where my work ethic and fears come from. You may wanna check first and read a bit into "emotional abuse, narcisisstic abuse, childhood trauma, gaslighting, scapegoating "
As said limt the time on things that only require brain work or brain movement (metaphoric expression). Go out into nature, do things that are physical I am still looking into this, but it seems to help. So you may wanna research healing or practicing frontal cortex on google. Yoga and opening up the third eye comes up a lot. Writing down goals is important. I do it on paper since that's more physical. I think digital creativity does add to ADHD in a bad way. Although that's my job, I am redesigning my life, don't know about that part yet. If you stay inside a lot that makes it worse too. I made it a necessity to go out and sit in nature between trees, greens and bushes regularly, I schedule this one too.

    1) because 20 TVs are open in from of me all the time, i become isolated in front of computer, trying to accomplist 20 TVs at the same time, it sucks! i become home sick
    2) because there are 100 things to do in my head, computer is a fast way to accomplist any task (shopping, calculating, watching instead reading) i am always in front of computer.
    3) because adhd creates understanding problem, i think i can lead myself to arts, such as music, which needs creativity that all adhd people have
    4) i will try to have an activity to earn money in a sociable environment, not in front of the computer on my own trying to make software. moreover, if you want me to understand, read, write something in front of computer every body must shut up, which is not possible in a software company. so to be able to understand what is written in front of the display, i isolate myself to earn money, it sucks as well. To sum up, to perform a "brain work" both in an social environment and on my own (individually) did not work for me.
    5) I am very sorry to have adult adhd, i am not enjoying.

of treatment. My adhd has gotten way way worse in adulthood. I just turned 50
and since about 28 years of age Life has been a big struggle. Severe depression and depressive symptoms overall have been the major cause of impairment.

So, all my life had big problemsbof organazing.., big counfusion, and a lot of pain insade of me, all the time..
So, in USA, Canada, England and many other countrys realize a big problem of ADHD.
I am now 43 years old, about ten years ago had to go to London to a specialist private doctor, and was diagnosed adult ADD, medication lisdexamphetamine..
But, as my life was so comlicated and hard, lot of bad emotions..,because of the symptoms of these condition not treated.. Doctors here prescribed me benzos, or other kind things just to calm me down a bit..
As a disfuncional young man started taking drugs which created more problems and disorders..
When was diagnosed, medication Elvanse helped me a lot but started also to abuse stimulants a lot..
So important is to diagnose ADHD as soon as possible, and then person can function normal like others..

I suspect my husband may suffer from ADHD. He displays so many symptoms. When we were dating, he would often be hours late to meet me, like 3-7 hours late. Nowadays, he's often late for work. He also gets stuck in one small activity for a whole afternoon, and most of the times he doesn't even complete it. He often forgets important information, but gets distracted by insignificant things. It's hard for him to stick with one topic while talking, often failing to reach a point. And these situations affect not only our relationship, but his whole life. He has only a couple of friends, as he forgets about keeping in touch, so they just stop talking to him. He's also had trouble at all his jobs due to tardiness, even missing some job opportunities. I try my best to help him without being pushy, but sometimes I'm afraid I might be acting like his mother, which I don't want to be for him. I've told him to seek professional diagnosis, but ironically he forgets about the situation and I just keep reminding him as much as I can without being too aggressive. He's a wonderful man and I know how much he struggles. I often feel a bit alone in our adult responsibilities, as well as relationship-wise, but I know he doesn't mean to neglect them or myself; whenever I tell him about how I feel, I can see the frustration and sadness in his expression that show me how he's doing his very best and that he's sorry for any emotional pain he unintentionally causes me. Despite all our issues, we love each other and I hope we can get professional help soon. We're in our 30s.

Cry it out loud. It’s good to cry it out loud. My son, he’s 22 year old and got diagnosed with ADHD last June 2021. He had so much emotions bottled-up in his mind . Two days ago, Nov. 8,2021, he just had an outbursts I never seen from
      him before .
So bad, we were so closed on calling police on him. Then, I remember, he has a disorder . After his outbursts, that night, he came to me crying down on his knees and told me how he felt growing-up. He said, I was bullied growing -up, emotionally bullied from friends and some teachers. He didn’t finish his high school but now he’s trying finish his GED.
      Even me as his mother,
staring all over again on how to re-mould his brain by addressing his needs and emotions more politely and respectfully because we are all not wired the same. I didn’t know! I felt
like a loser and a bad mother. I didn’t see the signs or maybe I did but because I love him so much I ignored it. In my mind, there was nothing wrong with him. Now I know that he’s diagnosed, I go to the last end of earth to help him navigate through life.
Good luck to you. I wish you healing and love.

I've got the big 40th coming up at the time of typing this. I got expelled from high school because the teacher put my behaviour down to me being a problem child. I missed out on 2 years of education until I found a new school. I've always came out with outbursts and remarks and find it's worser when in large groups or busy places. My memory is also really bad and I'm always tired. When I'm out and about I'm stared at and people just don't seem to get what's going on. My gp has only just spotted all of the signs and I'm now eagerly waiting for the diagnosis even though a lot of people who work in the adhd field are saying that all the signs are there. I lost my dad before I even realised what adhd was and that I needed to get it sorted. We rowed a lot because of my outbursts and I carry the hurt that if I just got diagnosed while he was still around, he would of understood and he would of helped me. 40 damn years of my life gone and I've been treated like I'm simple, ignored and now finally getting a diagnosis. I can't believe it. I want normality

Interesting.Ive been like this all my life .61 now and never been diagnosed.
    I procrastinate.
    I can't do repetitive work.
I never really finish a job.
My house is full of incompleted projects.
    I continually loose stuff.
Everything is always done at the last minute and causes extreme stress.
If I do start a job I'm easily distracted.
It has affected my working life and home life to a large degree.

I was messy since childhood , I was a good ideal student not last minute one even in my early twenties in college . But I m really struggling with procrastination since I am in 3rd year of my college,I didnt fail exams with last minute preparation I did passed but I couldnt achieve good grades like before (I did very few each day like one productive hour a day like its very little compared to others ) well it all started when my smart elder sister got severe depression he is still recovering , I have some complete memory blocks,I easily lost my notes even some certificates . My memory is not strong . I can focus upto 30minutes. With stress also I feel like I cant get done much ,my focus is poor than 3years ago. I guess its not ADHD but I have some difficulties because of this focus issue.

There are so many people in my life who use ADHD as a label to avoid responsibility for constantly being late and, always promising to do things but let others down.

I have ADHD and was able to manage it well as a kid with medication (ritalin), but I was soon taken off of it as it destroyed my appetite and I practically starved myself as a result of that. It made school difficult for me, but I did manage to graduate high school and recently I finished a 2 year diploma program in college, so its not impossible to pursue an education with ADHD. Though I am going to look into getting it properly diagnosed and put on a medication that wont make me starve to death so I can manage work better.

49 years old here, have made an appointment seeking diagnosis. I did a few online self-assessments to see if I should pursue a diagnosis. One question was, am I frequently late? Well no, I am never late to anything. Then it occurred to me that I have nearly five different reminders set up for every appointment I make (alarm, two app reminders, wall calendar, white board) to make sure I'm never late. Take away all of these obsessive safety nets and not only will I be late, I will absolutely forget altogether. I've always said it's exhausting being me, and only now am I realizing why. And this is just the tip of a very big iceberg. 😂

I'm 50 years old. I've never even spoken with anyone about the possibility of having ADHD, but this just described me to a tee. I even struggled to stay focussed on this video, losing my attention at least twice, and it's only 4 minutes long. I think I may have had an epiphany.

Think of the diagnosis itself as a good thing! Now you’ll have a chance to talk with someone, get help and so forth. It’ll only go for the better from here :)

Be happy! My son got diagnosed last June 2021. He’s 22 years old now and he’s trying to finish his GED. I go day at a time with him. I’m also researching how to address him properly as a mother without prejudice. I’m now learning to remould his emotions. I really feel bad for him because we didn’t take him to a specialist soon enough. He missed four years of his life and he got bullied a lot at school and from friends, if you call it friends. Then.
he became depressed and withdrawn from everything. Hopefully, he gets better with his prescribed medicine. Good luck and light to you and healing.

A diagnosis and medication does not magically make you function optimally. It seems like the interview was cut off at a critical moment of explaining the condition.

He doesn't say diagnosis and medication at the end .
      He says treatment .
Meaning you are correct medication is not the cure all .... my meds only hit 50-70% of my issues depending on the day, making it so that the tips, tricks and copping mechanisms I have been taught over the years can help with or mask the others .

I don't know what happened but this started when I was in grade 12 while studying in 2007. Earlier I used to take 4 to 5 minutes to visualize and memorize the notes. But then what happened that day was I took three to four hours to read and remember. I couldn't visualize nor focus on my task. Constantly I lose my mind. Now its been 2024 and still I don't understand what is happening to me. Is this ADHD?

So I got 1 minute in, had a sip of my drink and quickly decided to do something else on a different tab whilst listening to the presenter (I can't actually remember what that was) and then instead of playing the rest of the video, I started reading the comments. I'm non-diagnosed, but I have my suspicions.
I'm going to try to dive back in, wish me luck!

I’ve struggled with depression for a long time and it keeps my motivation at an all time low. I’m finding that even when I’m on medication for it I have all these symptoms that he’s mentioned. I’m extremely self aware and wanting to do better but I never feel like I can commit to doing anything. Should I try and get diagnosed or is this just another excuse I’m making for myself to deter me from success?
