When I was 14, I went to a therapist to see if I had ADHD. I wasn’t asked a lot of questions. I took the Connor cpt test and passed (I’ve always been good at test) and right away my therapist told me I don’t have ADHD and told my mom that all I need is more chores around the house 🥴
I believed I didn’t have it and I was just lazy. 10 years later, still had trouble focusing and major depression disorder. When to a psychiatrist, explained my symptoms, she asked me a bunch of questions where I felt like she was reading me like a book and was diagnosed with ADHD Inattentive type. If I had been listened to when I was younger, I could have saved myself from a lot of break downs.

My mom is the same way even though I believe she clearly exhibits sign of ADHD as well. I believe a lot of people, especially those belonging to the older generations have a huge stigma against ADHD and take it as a personal insult if they or their kids have it. I clearly showed signs of autism or adhd as a kid and my parents never got it looked into further. It even took them a while to acknowledge my stuttering according to their friends.

    • @xmunchyx
      @xmunchyx 2 года назад +11

@@MAledish to add, I think it's this: they probably had it too, so it's normal to them. They've BEEN lazy, forgetful, unfocused, etc... But they had no choice but to "grow out of it" because back then it didn't mean anything other than that they're lazy and forgetful. Their kids are struggling, but that's ok because they did, too. Everyone has a hard time growing up. So when we say we have a neurological condition, they think we are trying to avoid that growth. Except... ADHD often persists into adulthood without them realizing it. My mom is the matriarch--she's motivated and handles EVERYTHING. But! She's still forgetful, misplaces things, and always at least an hour late to everything, no matter how important. She never fully outgrew it, she just learned to cope enough to survive.
One day, I was sobbing over missing a work meeting and beating myself up (at the time undiagnosed). She came to see what was wrong. I asked her how to be more like her, and she said... "I am strong because I had to be. If I wasn't strong, people would starve, I wouldn't be able to see my parents or siblings, I wouldn't be able to feed my children. If I needed to do something, I had no choice but to do it because no one else could. You are weak because you did not struggle like I have." And it's funny, she called me weak with so much sympathy and compassion, I felt better. I think she understood me and meant..."I know you're struggling. I have too. But my situation forced me to overcome it. I am both glad and sorry that you will have to struggle to find a different path." She may not believe depression or adhd are real, but she's familiar with the pain and suffering caused by them, and that's all I can ask for. That might be where a lot of older adults are at.
Tldr: Parents probably also had ADHD and didn't know it, so they believe it's just a normal (painful) process of growing up. To claim a set of childish traits as a disorder is to avoid growing up. They understand the pain of ADHD, they just don't realize it's ADHD.

    • @xmunchyx
      @xmunchyx 2 года назад +8

@@MAledish oh also they probably internalized all the shame and humiliation that comes with those disorders and all the "these are character flaws that can be fixed" messaging, so that's how they view the symptoms--as character flaws, immaturity, unwillingness to put in the work to fix ourselves, etc.

Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Thank you for sharing this point!

I have an evaluation in December; I'm terrified I'm going to be told I'm faking my symptoms, or that there's nothing wrong with me because I didn't present "typical" hyperactive ADHD behavior as a child. Your video made me a little more at ease kind of going into it with a little more information. I'm 25, and I almost feel like an imposter trying to get diagnosed so far into my adult life, especially because I've been able to "cope" my way through a lot of it, even though I've still really struggled.
11/28/21 UPDATE: I got the “availability” run around from the unit I initially had the appointment with, and found a different practice that had no problem getting me in within a week. I’ve been diagnosed with combined type ADHD and am starting Adderall; the difference is ridiculous and makes me want to cry with how happy I am. I can focus at work, and my soul crushing skin itching boredom is so minimal, I feel so calm. It’s like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Keep going, you all are valid ♥️

UPDATE: After months of appointments, etc, I do have a diagnosis of severe inattentive ADHD. I started on stimulants yesterday, but unfortunately haven't noticed any effects, good or bad. (It's a very small dosage, so there's still hope) Honestly, just knowing it's not just all in my head (well, I mean it is, but you know what I mean) was a huge boon. Even if nothing works for me medicine-wise, knowing I'm not just inherently a lazy loser is a godsend.
I have my evaluation this Thursday. I’m 46. I was a smart kid in school, and have a lucrative job. But reading the symptoms… it’s disturbingly me.
I’m telling the guy when I start that I’m worried I’ll “pass” this test like all the others. My biggest fear is that I don’t have ADHD and I’m just lazy and not living up to my potential because I’m a loser.
But it’s worth it. I think.
      I hope. ;)

I’m 49, both of my sons have been diagnosed (one hyper, the other inattentive). I’m sure the doctor will say I’m an imposter because I have coped decently well so far. I was an honour roll student in school and, on the surface, I look like I’m able to get things done. My kids are convinced I’m ADHD and the more I look into it, the more I believe them. Spacey, distracted, interrupting conversation, my energy in social situations is either intense or non existent (which might be why I have very few friends and never get invited to anything).

I had an appointment with a psychiatrist 11/15/21. Before my appointment, I had to talk myself out of canceling it, because I was afraid of being told I was faking everything to get attention or help that I didn't need. Despite knowing I really did struggle with many things growing up socially and academically, especially with a supposed learning disability. Towards the end of the appointment, she told me straight up, "You have the classic ADHD symptoms from right out of the book. You're not faking it, the medical system and school system failed you." It was such a huge relief I ended up bursting into tears.I still have more tests to run, but its a relief to know that someone believes me. Stick it out, be honest with your feelings and tell the person evaluating you, and be honest in your test. It's scary, but you'll be happier for it after.

My parents have never been understanding of the fact that there may be something wrong with me, and our relationship is pretty complicated. We're really close, but I haven't shared anything really personal with my mom since the end of elementary school. Every time I've tried to bring up my mental health to her, which is incredibly hard for me to begin with, she laughs at me and basically tells me I'm foolish for thinking so, and that "of course there's nothing wrong with you!" I told her a few months back that I was thinking about getting tested for ADHD, and she brushed it off like I was crazy.
Long story short, I chose to get tested anyway because it's become a huge problem in my studies and personal life, and I've got an appointment at a private clinic this Thursday. Safe to say I haven't told my parents because I know for a fact that they wouldn't approve and that they'd get mad at me for "spending money on such a stupid thing". I'm pretty concerned they'll ask to speak to my parents in order to go through with a potential diagnosis, but I just know that even if I grew the balls to bring it up to my parents they'd get there and downplay every single symptom to make it seem like there was nothing wrong with me. I've basically hidden half my life from them, so half my struggles they aren't even aware of.
Sorry for the essay, but I'm basically wondering if it's even possible to get a diagnosis without them talking to my family/friends? I know my behavior from school pretty well, and no one besides me really know how messed up my mental health has been ever since elementary school. I have a really hard time opening up to people, especially those close to me, and it hasn't gotten any easier now that I'm 23 and pretty messed up.

Same exact story here. I'm really nervous about my clinician asking about family observations because I'm not close with mine in that way. They were never really openly supportive of my mental health journey. I'm 20 and just figuring out for the first time in my life that I might have adhd. Very scary journey and my evaluation is this week. At least, at the end of it all I'll have a definitive answer on whether or not I do but the scary part is the not knowing.

So in case anyone’s reading this and wondering the same thing, I did eventually tell my parents, and my psychologist did end up talking to my dad. He didn’t back up a single thing I had told my psychologist, and he was extremely dismissive of everything. We proceeded anyway, as I had explained to her in detail how complicated our relationship is and that they don’t really know anything about my mental health and haven’t since I was around 10 years old. So it wasn’t a surprise that they didn’t back me up, because I’ve been hiding everything from them, so they don’t actually know half the stuff I’ve told my psychologist. It’s been about 3 months since I first started testing and I was put on Ritalin about a week ago, but I’m honestly still not 100% sure as they haven’t told me straight up that I have it. We’re trying out different dosages right now and I’m being monitored pretty closely by a psychiatrist, so hopefully this whole process will be finalized soon!

"For years, no, for decades, I struggled with things like depression and anxiety and organisation and social relationships, and never once did any of the clinicians or physicians I saw mention anything about the possibility of ADHD ... Some days, I just wish I could go back in tim and shout at so many people, Why did you miss this? Why didn't somebody tell me?"
Wow. This perfectly articulates my experience. I was just diagnosed with adult ADHD at 32. Since at least 15, I struggled with at times debilitating depression, anxiety (generalised + social), hypervigilance and other issues. I tried countless counsellors, medications, and coping strategies - none helped, at least not much. And then I started gettign treated for ADHD. Without a doubt, treating my ADHD is by far the most effective treatment for depression and anxiety I have ever experienced - nothing even comes close. It's like ADHD was the root of a great vine slowly strangling me, and everything else just clipped an inch or two off of it. ADHD medication took it out at the root.

Edit: I finally got the results back! The test went really well and I was diagnosed with inattentive ADHD. I’m not taking any prescriptions currently, but I plan to in the future. I’ve been seeing a therapist that provides me materials to help me cope and work with my ADHD.

Yeah, my "diagnosis" sounded more like a suggestion and it did take 20 minutes or less. It didn't feel like the thorough evaluation I have heard so many of the RUclips clinicians mention, but an after thought. When I asked later how to get a diagnosis, the counselor was surprised. "But I diagnosed you." The suggestion, however, was enough for me to do my own research. After a couple of equally confusing and unproductive sessions, I didn't go back to the counselor. Doing my own research has been far more productive.

you might have gotten a 'provisional diagnosis.' I got this through my college health program. It was enough for me to potentially get meds (i haven't been able to yet because i had to 'mood stablize' first with zoloft) but not enough for me to get services through the disability center. I'm still trying to get that official diagnosis like this video describes.

@@finchcarvingadiamond SAME! After taking a short test on their office computer and talking with the docs nurse for like 3 minutes, the doc walked in and told me I had ADHD, MDD, GAD and mild OCD tenancies. I was shocked to hear all those but really surprised about OCD because when I said I had to keep my purse and keys in a certain area, it was because I couldn't remember where to look otherwise. He put me on all kinds of crap which started to make my hair fall out, non stop menstrual bleeding, heart palpitations, and delayed baseline ecg readings.
The follow-up appointment, I told his nurse practitioner about the new symptoms and how my gp said it could be related to SSRI's and she said "In my 40 years as a nurse practitioner, I have NEVER heard of antidepressants causing abnormal periods." She should have at least looked because there are documented cases. She then tells me she was doubling the dose! Then the doctor walks in and stands halfway in the door, tells me the meds are being upped and follow-up in 3 months.
After having to see a cardiologist because I was feeling worse than ever when trying to stick with the meds, I ditched the SSRIs and him and got physiologically better. Vyvanse is the only thing I'm taking and I'm taking it sparingly because I don't know where to get genuine help otherwise.

I'm terrified. I am getting tested in a couple weeks. I'm a broke college kid and these evaluations cost plenty but I know I need help. My fear is, what if I pay so much for this evaluation and ADHD isn't my problem?
Also, doing my research that lead me to get tested I found I related to a large majority of the examples given. Also, my uncle, my dads brother, does have ADHD, and I've actually talked to him quite a bit about my troubles and he's shared his with me. And there hasn't been one thing either of us have explained that the other doesn't have. Honestly, talking to him really solidified my decision to get tested.
    But....
I'm still afraid I'm wasting my money. I keep looking back at common effects ADHD has like before and half the time I'm confident in having these troubles I read of and the other half the time I either find another explanation or doubt or am unsure if I do have this or that.
When I look back at how I acted way back in elementary and middle school I see just about every symptom of ADHD. But with young adult me now (after I set my appointment to get tested) I'm not sure. But I am... AHHHH!!!
Sorry for my long anxious ramble. But if when I get tested I don't have ADHD, what should I do? I have always had severe social anxiety, awful time management, awful general anxiety and horrible at keeping attention. As well as the rare ability to stay still. Even resting I'm moving something. Taping foot, twittling my fingers, nodding my head to nothing, countless things.
I'm sorry for my long speech on my troubles. But what do I do if after spending all this money on this evaluation it isn't my trouble? What then? How do I find help for my hyper, anxious, socialy panicked, attentionless, troubles?

My psychologist and I firmly believe I have ADHD. I got tested in 2018 and "passed", so they told me I don't have it. The things they had me do weren't hard though. Click the mouse button when the screen flashes, rearrange some blocks on the table, recite some numbers in a certain order. My psychologist said I passed because it was likely my baseline, and I've been trying to learn how to cope and focus my entire life. So not only will the place that tested me not diagnose me, but my psychiatrist won't prescribe me anything without a confirmed test result, and also believes people are over-diagnosed with it when they don't really have it. It's all so frustrating because I'm just struggling to do basic tasks and function on a daily basis, and anyone who can prescribe me medication for it tells me "Oh it's just anxiety." Yes, I have anxiety. But I've been on at least 6 different anti-depressants, and none of them helping my ability to focus in any way. How can I just convince someone to help me?

Nobody knows your body and mind better than yourself, as long as you're not lying to yourself and wanting to others about faking a diagnosis, then your doctor should definitely listen to you and not judge you and treat you accordingly because adult ADHD is literally debilitating if it's untreated for too long it leads to other issues like self-esteem issues and just general loss of interest in life that's how it hit me and to this day I am still untreated even though I was treated as a kid all the way through my high school career and I did extremely well in school as well as just life in general when I was on my adderall, but now of course we live in a world that all these medications that are their, they are able to be prescribed, cannot get prescribed anymore because of the DEA and all of this b******* about people abusing the medications it's like you can easily tell if someone is abusing their medications, it's obvious you can do blood work you can do all types of tests to see if somebody is abusing their medications because they can run out quick they can show many signs of abuse and that's when if they need to be cut off so be it, but if someone's doing better in life on the medication responsibly then there shouldn't be any issue with prescribing these medications to people that need them desperately❤

It will always be something you need to tend to and care for if you have something going on but it's not impossible. I got diagnosed today at age 28 after 6 months waiting list. Don't put it off if you struggle with it, I feel like there's light at the end of the tunnel now. I was put on strattera which is a non stimulant that the psychiatrist has had success with many patients. I was a little nervous but they took the lead and asked many things about my life, I was just open and honest. I was asked many things from how I performed in early school, how I handle relationships to how messy my room is on average.

It's like... great so because of the many coping strategies I work really hard to employ, partly because every report card I ever had called me lazy or needing to apply myself more, you've decided the tornado in my head isn't real. The best part is she then diagnosed me with major depressive disorder because I was having suicidal ideation after dealing with her crap. To which I was like... I told you I'd been diagnosed with that on my first visit! She seemed so proud of herself too, recognizing a psych disorder.

Mostly, if I get a diagnosis, it will help my family. If my neices have it, they might get tested early. If my brother has it, it might be a clue for how to treat his alcoholism. It might be an explanation of why my dad was the was he was, but we will never know that for sure. I suspect both sides of my family have it, and if I get diagnosed, maybe others will have a clue that puts their personal puzzle together and find peace.

The thing that made me suspect I've had ADHD all these decades was the subject of "executive function". I have always had experiences when I couldn't make myself do something - even if it was something I like, enjoy, want to do. I just couldn't make myself start; I felt paralyzed. The only thing that could make me act was a state of emergency, or a deadline. I procrastinate until such a state is critical. In grammar school I was always in a state of high anxiety - a constant state of emergency - because the consequences of not doing things perfectly seemed dire. I was an A+ student, until I decided one day to stop doing the work. I barely made it out of high school, but the anxiety lessened. My request is that you discuss executive function.

In high school I never ditched or partied or did drugs until after highschool I was always in class but never paying attention failing all my classes cause I wouldn't do the classwork or homework but doing okay on tests I didn't graduate I had to go to continuation school and graduate a year later, also went to community college but failed almost every class cause I could not pay attention or just had no desire to go and also ended up going on academic probation and not even giving a damn alot of money wasted on books I never even opened and would always fail to drop the classes due to procrastination 10 years later I'm working a dead end job that bores me and I hate but literally can't get up and get out I have terrible anxiety and mild depression but I literally can't muster the interest strength willpower or anything to formulate a plan because I just don't have an interest in anything and here I am reading all the comments and rewinding this video 5 times to actually comprehend what he is saying. Also I have abused the heck outta alcohol because it calms my anxiety racing thoughts and just general uncomfortability for a little bit but then it comes back 10 times harder during the hangxiety attack I get the next day, I'm not dumb alotta people consider me rather articulate, well spoken, logical and intelligent but inside it's all a script of me understanding the proper behaviour and social cues of the world but I just have no desire to get anything done or finish anything I start, Im very introverted as well and spend alot of time with the thoughts in my mind, I recently bought a cello to learn but I could only play it for 2 mins at a time for the first week now it just sits there and I say damn I gotta practice but just end up trying to watch a movie and sitting in my living room on my phone.

I’m 24 years old and I was officially diagnosed with ADHD over a month ago. The last year has been really really really rough, and the process of adjustment it’s just getting started. But I’m grateful to finally have my diagnosis.
I’ve been teaching this kid, who to me, it’s so obvious he has it too, like REALLY obvious. And I see myself in him, a lot. And my heart breaks for him because apparently I am the only one noticing it. To the rest, he’s only a new kid who have just had online classes before, and doesn’t really know how to behave. I really wish I’m wrong and he for real doesn’t have it, so he won’t struggle the way I did.

Thanks for this very informative content ...I'm 53 years young and started suspecting I had ADHD without even looking at research studies and online info until 3 years later ..I just felt like something was very wrong but would find a way to blow it off ...only when I started having serious anxiety about the road running out and all I had was this wrecked life for no good reason at all did I start really digging in deep and finding out that I had a severe case of ADHD...everything I read about the symptoms I could see were severe in myself except the fidgeting until I realized there was something I did chronically to the point of excess ...I have always chewed inside of my cheeks and lips to the point I have to keep chewing gum on me at all times because I could not stop ...I recently started the daunting challenge of jumping through the hoops which is very frustrating because I've wasted my whole life at this point ...I wish someone including myself had noticed these things 20 years ago

I get tested in less than 2 weeks. I’m scared he won’t believe me, but I’m also incredibly angry at my previous physicians for never suggesting this as a thought until this recently. I have all diagnosis’ of bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, depression and I experience mania. I truly think I only have some sort of ADD and if I could just get that figured out I’d be happier and would experience so many less anxiety attacks. I’m 22 turning 23 in 2 months & I just wish I knew more about it when I started struggling at age 14…

Watching this was interesting, I find it interesting to see the amount of people that have questioned if they were different. When I think back on it now it’s very obvious that I’m different. But it was never brought up to me, by my friends or family.
With my family, we are all incredibly close and we actually suspect that a-few of my other family members have conditions of their own we never thought about. And I think it’s partly because of our family dynamic that we’ve never questioned why we act the way we do, it’s just how we are.
I don’t remember what had me tumbling down the research train, I think it might have been an adhd tiktok compilation 🤔
But jeez, I remember my whole life suddenly made much more sense when I thought back on it.

Hello Jared, this was such a helpful video! Thank you! I suspect I have ADHD and I relate so much to every one of the problems you mentioned in the beginning. Well, I actually already had an evaluation recently and... What can I say? During the interview they asked me what kind of symptoms I have and at that very moment I forgot everything I had been wanting to say🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ I meant to elaborate more on my symptoms during the second appointment but the clinician didn't have time for that (the whole evaluation took 2 appointments in total). At the end they came to the conclusion that I didn't have ADHD but I felt completely misunderstood by the clinician. I guess I have to get another evaluation from a different person (and not forget to write down my symptoms before.🤦🏼‍♀️)

I was “fortunate” enough to get diagnosed as a child. Only it was never treated as something I needed to work on or find ways to cope with. I was just told I had it, given medication for a while (which helped, and helps again now), and sent on my merry little way. It wasn’t until recently that I started realizing just how much it impacts my life. I’ve always just shrugged it off and ignored it, because I was taught it isn’t a big deal and just means I’m a little more easily distracted and prone to being hyper here and there. I’m almost 40 and I was diagnosed at 14. That’s a lot of wasted time that I could have been learning how to cope. A lot of trauma that could have, and should have been avoided.

I wasn't diagnosed at a young age, but as an older adult now, I can relate to the thought of wasted time. That sometimes makes me sad when I think back to missed opportunities in my personal and professional life.
However, I then try to focus on my life ahead and how I can live the life I envision for myself using the knowledge about ADHD that I keep discovering. Wishing us all happy lives going forward.

Have an evaluation on Tuesday and kind honestly kind of nervous. I don't know what I'd do if they say I don't have it since lack of focus and concentration for certain activities has been a huge problem of mine in my adult life. What's more is my parents haven't been the most supportive about me telling them this so I'm inclined to just stay quiet about the whole process.

Once I began taking Vyvanse for my inattentive ADHD it felt like I finally was experiencing the real world, and I saw the beauty in everything. Before having my medication I would: CONSTANTLY forget things within the span of a minute, lose my train of thought, have a lack of drive to do things that I know I would enjoy, quickly lose interest in the things that I enjoy...and it made me strongly feel as if I was 1) a sociopath and 2) a complete moron... Initially when I started taking my medication it quickly began working, even at the first dose. Feeling and processing everything correctly and actually getting all of that mental feedback was overwhelming in a positive sense...I finally felt ALIVE. Can not express how truly grateful I am to live in a time where I dont have to suffer the curse of having a crippling mental disorder such as ADHD...and even writing this I'm nearly shedding tears.

I'm going to talk to my therapist about this as soon as possible

Recently it was suggested for me to get evaluated for ADHD. I have looked into it myself in the past and always been curios if I do have ADHD. It's common on both sides of my family and I haven't found a description or potential symptom that I don't have.
I've wanted to be evaluated for a while but have had a lot of trouble finding someone near me. The closest I've found is about 300 miles away.
I'm a college kid, 24, and having a very hard time lately and any help is great but I would absolutely love to know if I do infact have ADHD. I also found it's common on both my mothers and fathers sides of the family.
I live in southern Oregon for school but also travel back and fourth to northern California where I'm from and where my family lives commonly. I'm hoping to find someone to at least evaluate me near here but haven't had the luck to find anyone yet.
I'm not asking for a specific suggestion for my area, but maybe some tips to find someone who can evaluate me.
Also, I searched the sights left in the description and like I said, no one seems to be within 300 miles of me either way. In Oregon or California...
Any tips from anyone are appreciated. Thank you.

First of all thanks for the sound effects :)
Second, I am an adult (23) who thinks I might have ADHD. Thing is you said I need someone who knows me well to accompany me. Well today I opened up for the first time to my very religious parents about the whole situation and the difficulty I've felt my entire life and the experiences I've had without saying ADHD (since am still unsure). They are the only ppl who could be counted as knowing me well, since I really have no friends, like non (really i have no friends).
But they just responded me with a : more than looking for professional help, you should pray the situation away....🙄
So, the question is what can I do if I have no one to help as a third person reference??? Help•́ ‿ ,•̀
