  • Ever wonder why your emotions with ADHD are so darn intense?
Do your emotional amps go to '11'?
Ever been called "too intense", "too dramatic", "too sensitive"?
Yup, there's a reason that adults with ADHD feel emotions, criticism, and rejection so much more intensely, but it's not often talked about. In fact, it's one of the most common reasons adults with ADHD get frequently overlooked and misdiagnosed.
So grab a stress ball and let's talk about intense emotions, emotion dysregulation, and adult ADHD.

…YUP. To be fair, I do have comorbid anxiety. BUT the standard anxiety/depression drugs cranked those up SO DAMN MUCH to the point 1) I have NEVER felt that intense before in my life and 2) I literally couldn’t control them.
So…currently working on getting a psche eval to be formally diagnosed with adhd and (re)diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I’m also comorbid with what is most likely fibromialgia. BUT, since after discussing things with my therapist (since my brain refused to know what psychiatric drugs my old pcp had me try) and my current pcp (he could see what my rheumatologist wants me to try for fibromialgia which Also can treat depression + old pcp’s records don’t go back far enough) …we ended up deciding that generic-Lyrica (a mildly addictive and regulated drug) would be safer for me to try since Rheumo’s Suggested is just too close to what class my therapist thinks prolly set me off so bad (and I’m waiting on the psyche eval-hopefully my medicaid will cover gene labwork as well.)
Thank god for my state having GOOD medicaid, and finally having a therapist and pcp who actually listen to me

This makes so much sense. I avoid any/all hard conversions because I will just start bawling and nothing gets accomplished. I can’t listen to a sad song or watch a sad movie without crying like a baby. I’m 39 and just now learning why I am the way I am. Kind of sad to think I could have managed my life better if I knew this.

I relate with your comment very much.
I'm the same about hard conversations but I get angry over bawling. For the sad music and movies. My eyes start leaking but not full on crying but I have done that a few times if something affects me more.
I have not been diagnosed yet but the more and more I learn about myself and adhd. The stronger the urge is to go get diagnosed.
Thank you for sharing your comment.

Today I just felt really hurt and sad all day and I don’t know why. I get this sometimes where I feel like I’m really depressed for like a day or two before I begin to feel better again. I just know I was feeling a lot of emotional pain and hopelessness. I tried to cheer up but I just couldn’t. I didn’t want to do any of the things I would normally do and it was really hard to do anything at all.

Gosh, that happens to me too!
Actually experienced that this week, and finally got to the other side of it yesterday. I remember this happening to me in childhood, adolescence, and still happening now. I thought it was SAD, but it happens during my favorite seasons too. It's overwhelming and I feel I can't explain it because there's no "reason"...

Exactly the same symptoms with me. Gradual decline over past three years after a number of changes in my life, losing a friend, good neighbours moved out and drug using squatters moved in next door and the place I absolutely loved volunteering at closed down. My support system all wiped out, started isolating, now home an untidy mess which I procrastinate because I feel completely drained of all energy, get breathless and worn out very quickly. Some weeks are really bad, but occasionally I have a couple of good days in a row. All the joy and excitement of life has disappeared. I have been through this years ago, wasn't expecting it to return. Very grateful for being able to share and learn so much from others who understand the agonising suffering we sometimes experience and feel unable to actively help myself feel better 💖

The oversight in the DSM was a catastrophic mistake for a lot of people who were supposed to be helped by that book. The line excluding anything that can be explained away as a mood disorder, though, is what hit me the hardest.

Thanks my man - hits home in a real, good , clear way 👍 Even having been an “inpatient “ at McClean’s in Boston , the DSM -5 placed me in the ‘borderline’ diagnosis but AADHD , or lifetime ADHD seems more appropriate for what I experience - the intensity of “feelings” , emotions etc - . Despite what I feel , one is still the director of one’s own movie and responsible for your own reactivity and response to what wells up inside you . ✌️

Coming to terms with and learning a new ‘story’ about how our brains work (instead of us just seeing ourselves as ‘broken’ or ‘failures’) can be really tough work. I paused the video when you said the little bit around emotional literacy because I needed a minute to basically catch my breath. I remember trying to communicate to an ex years ago that I genuinely don't know what words go with what feelings. Had no idea at the time that I had ADHD, nor that it was even associated with the condition. Keep up the psychoeducational content! You're making people like me feel more sane :)

My husband loses patience when I say I’m anxious, so I don’t say it anymore. In fact, my sister and others in my family don’t understand and just think I should stop worrying and having anxiety or depression, so I try to not show it in front of them. It’s been getting worse, and I’ve only recently wondered if I may have ADHD.

Can you guys explain this a little more? What if you're, for instance, really in love with someone? Are you able to express it? Or do you not know how to say things like, "you're perfect for me," or "I love you for xxx reasons."
I am struggling because my ADHD partner is now withholding from saying he loves me back, unless it's on his terms and his timing. He's rarely ever called me things like "beautiful" or use words that associate with attractiveness. He does not say things that give me much emotion and is pretty dry. But he loves when I blow up his ego. Could this be an adhd thing or is it possible that I just love him more than he loves me? He also rarely makes time to see me now that he has a new roommate and is hyper focused on completing tasks around his house that he's not done in years. I could really use some advice. I feel very lonely and unloved.

A type of therapy called "emotion regulation" helps you learn to correctly identify emotions of others and your self, to think about those emotions, formulate responses using knowledge of experience and consequences, and make decisions about how you responsd.
This requires complex processing and integration of many brain areas, which the ADHD brain struggles with (definitive functional features). Trauma and PTSD can look like ADHD, so please make sure you read about both and have some ability to understand and discuss with potential therapists as you may consult and interview them. Often ppl with ADHD do actually have PTSD due to a lifetime of adverse life experiences in many different contexts. People who have ADHD are more prone to developing PTSD due to the emotional dysregulation and extremes in emotions, difficulty processing their extreme emotions and rationally framing experience, ruminative and perseverating thinking about the situations "causing" those feelings, and impaired social cognition in which they mis-read facial expressions, non verbal cues, and other peoples emotions and thoughts.
