We had an older patient in her 70s that just came out of surgery and her Filipino nurse wanted to learn the word pain (mob) in Hmong because my shift was almost over. I was trying to teach her but she just couldn’t get it right and finally she got it. Anyways she wanted to be the one to ask the patient so anyways she said it in the wrong tone and said ‘mov’ meaning ‘rice’ 🤦♀️. So of course the patient said to me yes I want rice, I want to eat I’m starving. 🤦♀️ So I had to explain to the patient she meant ‘mob’ pain and that she wasn’t Hmong. The patient started laughing and thought it was so funny! And we all started laughing. The patient was a cute little old lady. Bless her heart ❤️ Tone is very important

It’s funny you mention “mov” because that word can also mean food! We really have know the context to understand words that sounds the same or words that can have different meanings.
I am very impressed of how skillful you are in teaching the Hmong language when you are not a native speaker. I am Hmong and I don't think I can teach it as good as you. I would send my kids to your class to learn Hmong (speaking and writing) if you live in Minnesota. :) Keep up the great work!

Thank you for teaching our language as it seems like its becoming a lost language with less fluent speakers in the newer generations. I moved away from my family and and there is no Hmong people in the Black Hills of South Dakota so as time goes on I am losing touch with my language. I now have a 4 year old that I want to teach Hmong to and your page has been so helpful!

I grew up in America, and have on my own learn kwv txhiaj, hu plig, qeej nwb nrws, lus taum, etc. By learning this, I have increased my Hmong vocabulary by 3x folds. There are some ancient Hmong words that we don't use today, but are still in our songs and story. Ua tsaug mog koj tseem muaj peev xwm heev es koj ho los luam tau daim video no pub rau peb sawv daws tau saib. Sib ntsib dua lwm zaus nawd.

The explanation of the tone and language is pretty good overall. The tonal pronunciation not as much which is normal for most non-native speakers of any language. At 6:00 the correct pronunciation is 'cim siaB' whereas it was spoken as 'ciD siab' - m is a soft neutral tone whereas D is a more pronounced higher tone. Great job nevertheless 👍. Way better than most if not all Western Hmong nowadays who cannot even speak nor comprehend their own language.
It's always bothered me to hear someone taking tones lightly, with comments like, "They understand me even though I don't bother with the tones." As an amateur linguist who studies different languages just for the fun of it, I study tonal languages precisely for the fun of pronouncing the tones. (Danashan Mong is my favorite tonal language, followed by Mandarin Chinese.)
I agree entirely. It's kind of a pet peeve I have when the sounds aren't pronounced right. Although I know I am not perfect and have a long way to go too. :)
"Paus" is fart, but in noun context. We would say something like "leejtwg ro-paus es yuov rw paus taagnpaum?" When we use it as verb, we add another syllable to it. Eg: kuv ro-paus = I fart. We do not say "kuv paus"

We are from California, but now we live in Thailand! Wow. So, we have heard White Hmong from those from Laos moving to the States, and White and Green Hmong here in Thailand which is similar and different too. I have a long way to go, but I am so grateful for your encouragement. We just had a few Hmong friends that taught us how to read, and then would talk to anyone we met, and read dictionaries and looked on the internet for whatever we could find to learn it.

I could be wrong but English does have tones too. For example of these monosyllable words such as "me, he, we, they, bay, two, him, you, blue" they all have the Hmong tone of "S". If we say these words in any other Hmong tone, then they would be hard to understand by an English speaker. Other example words such as "take, write, bike, snake, stop, pop, would, could" carry the Hmong tone of "J". "What" has the Hmong tone "V" along with the final sound -t. Thanks.
How did I end up here? I have no idea since somebody sent me a link, but what I get is that Basically "the word" (or its meaning being more precise) means=vowels+consonants+music. Getting back to Hmong: I would say that this is the emotional language. Hard to think using its conceptual space. Now I'm trying to re-learn our native language and man... I did NOT know how hard it until now. Lol. I'm really glad you're interested in our Hmong language. If anyone don't agree...well, go to see your family functions: wedding, funeral, party, birthdays, Hmong New Year, etc. Most people under 40 usually speak English. Try talking to the other parents. When i hear the word "Paus" i automatically define it as "Fart". Now when i hear "Hauv paus" then i define it as "The beginning".

At 4:07, you pronounced the paum instead of paus, so it was very awkward and funny. You are so right; accuracy does matter. To a native Hmong speaker, we can hear the tones. Other than that, I find that this video is very educational and enlightening, from the perspective of a non-native Hmong speaker. Thank you for sharing and keep them coming. :-)
so I realized that speaking Hmong and then shifting to English is very harsh on the vocal cord and also very messy for me in singing and it's a struggle then I think I probably need to follow an accent reduction exercise because it seems like their brain doesn't know.
That’s a good question. I would have to do research in publications because I’m not sure. When we were in Thailand, we just used the Thai word for it. I think it may not have a direct word, but may need to be explained..? Thaum muaj sijhawm zoo.. When have a time that’s good.. I am not sure.
The tones are for both white and green. When I made this lesson I probably only used white examples. We, especially my husband has started to use Green more in our teaching on our lessons and website. I totally get it!!! That's about the level of language I learned in High School!! This time with Hmong though, I was really determined and just put in hours and hours of practice. :)

so I realized that speaking Hmong and then shifting to English is very harsh on the vocal cord and also very messy for me in singing and it's a struggle then I think I probably need to follow an accent reduction exercise because it seems like their brain doesn't know.

That’s a good question. I would have to do research in publications because I’m not sure. When we were in Thailand, we just used the Thai word for it. I think it may not have a direct word, but may need to be explained..? Thaum muaj sijhawm zoo.. When have a time that’s good.. I am not sure.

The tones are for both white and green. When I made this lesson I probably only used white examples. We, especially my husband has started to use Green more in our teaching on our lessons and website. The site is Www.studyhmong.com and you should be able to see his RUclips and Instagram from there and all..

I totally get it!!! That's about the level of language I learned in High School!! This time with Hmong though, I was really determined and just put in hours and hours of practice. :)
