Similarities Between Arabic and Urdu

  • How close are Urdu and Arabic? The languages belong to two different family groups but the Urdu language contains many Arabic originating words. In this episode, Meena, an Arabic speaker from Iraq, and Ayesha, an Urdu speaker from Pakistan, challenge each other with a list of words and sentences.
Modern Standard Urdu is a Persianized and standardised register language of the Hindustani language. It is the official national language and lingua franca of Pakistan. In India, it is one of the official languages recognized in the Constitution of India, having official status in the five states of Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, as well as the national capital territory of Delhi. For centuries prior to the British colonization, Persian was widely used as a second language in the Indian subcontinent and has had a huge impact on the languages of the region.
Arabic is a Central Semitic language and the official language of Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Tanzania (Zanzibar), Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Arabic is also the liturgical language of Islam.

The Arab girl has a very good grasp of the Arabic language. Most Arabs only speak dialect. She's clearly smart and educated. Kudos to her.

All Arabs are aware of fusha, however because of the lack of practice, it becomes difficult to speak it on a daily basis. Arabic lessons in school are taught in fusha, so it’s absurd of you to suggest they’re unaware of it. However, MOST, if not ALL Arabs don’t use fusha. We have different dialects, fusha is in the hikayat (stories) news reports, official things, books, etc.. Normally, speaking to one another, we use dialects. This girl though is remarkably intelligent, and undeniably smart. But for you to say most Arabs know only dialect, is completely wrong. And when you said ‘speak’ I’m assuming you meant ‘know.’ Because she doesn’t speak fusha, she knows fusha.

Youmna Ahmouch Know as in speak? Correct, not all Arabs speak fusha- in fact I mentioned that before. But there is no Arab that is not aware of the existence of fusha, because it is THE original form of Arabic. Taught everywhere, widely used in stories and almost in every Arabic country. Arabs know it unless you’re talking about newborns, then of course; but that would be absurd to suggest.

It was incredible to realise that apparently I have some Arabic vocabulary too, as part of the Urdu that we speak. Ayesha also has some Hindi (Sanskrit root) vocabulary too, in "bahut" and "sona". Hi guys, cool video! I have a question as a beginner Arabic learner. In the subtitles you do not show the vowel diacritics - is this not important for distinguishing the correct word when the word is read without context like this? Did you use vowel diacritics on the cards you gave to the girls? Does Urdu also use vowel diacritics the way Arabic sometimes does? Thanks in advance.

@Saraiki Markhor no. Both Hindi and Urdu are came from same language.
Hindi which have more sanskrit words than Parisian and Urdu have more Parisian word than sanskrit.
The name Urdu was first introduced by the poet Ghulam Hamadani Mushafi around 1780.
While Urdu retained the grammar and core Indic vocabulary of the local Indian dialect Khariboli, it adopted the Nastaleeq writing system which was developed as a style of Persian calligraphy.

Few things I would like to say here. Upon talking about sahel, Meena mentioned sehl. We also have sehl in urdu as in sehl pasandi/susti. Tanzeem - We also have word for Imaan, itehad, tanzeem (faith, unity and Discipline) so discipline for tanzeem. For organisation (munazamma) in arabic, although we do not have a word we do have munazzam for getting organised. Moreover, aali means high in urdu. So, instead of one word qeemat (price) using aalia as high/valuable could have made Ayesha more closer to the meaning. Great video indeed!

When Mina asked if “ghalat” is a noun, I think Ayesha got confused, and understandably so. Ayesha was right the first time she explained it. “Ghalat” means wrong or incorrect, so it is an adjective. “Ghalatee” is the noun, which means mistake or fault.

satoshi2oll Yes you are spot on about my confusion there, thank you for understanding it so well! 😀 I was still thinking there about how I explained 'ghalat' vs. 'ghalati' and then hearing the Arabic versions led to some of my confusion and mix-up with respect to nouns vs. adjectives.
