Chris, do you have a distinction between word games for whole words to puzzle whole words, and word games for assembling whole words from component letters? 'Word' vs Spelling? Letter jam, buyword, spellsmashers, quiddler, bananagrams, boggle, scrabble are ones like this that are tagged 'word games' on bgg, but do something different as central mechanic.
Played a ton of Taboo in the early 00s with this couple that were telepathically linked and so good at it! haven't played it since and really miss it. I've been thinking of getting a party word game for Thanksgiving (game of the night has always been LRC, which I am sick of) as well as a solo/small group one for more routine play. Haven't played any of them but Taboo. I wonder what would be a good word game for small vs big groups, also is there a great solo word game out there? I'll be checking up on this list!
Great list - Insider and Decrypto are brilliant games. I’d add in Cross Clues - a snappier co-op riff on Codenames that eliminates the downtime. And Wordsy - a word making game; sort of like Paperback - but without the unnecessary (imo) deck building element.
1:12 BTW, there's also Paperback Rogue One, Where the rebels manage to steal the papers and the empire is trying to get them... ehm, well... back. But it ends with a really sad book burning scene even though they manage to send the letters to the princess at the last minute.
For those of you who clicked on the video because of the thumbnail… yes, there is a Wordle board game coming out soon, but I think you should try out a much older game called “What’s My Word?”. A two-player game with a similar mechanism to Wordle, but a few twists that make it very unique and interesting.
My picks: 1. Super big boggle 2. Just one 3. Codenames pictures 4. Baldurdash 5. Taboo Really want to try so clover. Poetry for neoderthrals sounds neat too.
Chris, have you tried Kiitos? Might be hard to find outside of New Zealand. It’s not a party game like most on your list, but more of a pure word game played with just a deck of cards with letters on them. If you wish scrabble were more focused on words, and less on area control, then give it a go.
Interesting. To me, word games are not just that they have words in them, but they're also about spelling. When someone says "word game" I think scrabble. Not charades.
I agree, my first thought were games like Banangrams, Upwords, Letter Jam, etc. Games that actually use spelling, not just party games with words in them. Not saying it's a bad list, just not what I would consider words games.
Take a letter, Upwords, typo, word thief, taboo, guesstures, hit or miss, word sweep, quiddler, jot, word on the street, scrabble cooking edition……I’d like to try Mystic Paths
Letter Jam is our group's favorite!
Had to watch this video twice. I fainted the first time when you said Just One and Paperback didn’t make the list.
😂

My favourites are Letter Jam, Letter Tycoon, Word Slam, Codenames, and Decrypto.
For anyone who wants an experience that’s as close to Wordle as you can probably get on the tabletop, I can’t recommend Letter Jam enough.
This list is great. Word.

Just one is one of our favorites
Thanks for the laugh. Mystic Paths, the game made using all the spare minis 😂

Just one, time s up, and oh my brain, are the best !
Wondering how you feel about Letter Jam? It's my favourite. I want So Clover so bad, love deduction.
Letter Jam is my favourite as well. Always a good time, and usually so challenging to come up with a good clue.
@@beazer32 I love when people screw up the intended word, but still manage to accidentally make a word. Haha.

Surely you meant to say that Letter Jam... is your Jam...
Love to see Decrypto so high! Heard great things about Insider. I have to throw out and oldie but a goodie, Balderdash. Always fun.
I remember Taboo!
Great list for you, Chris!
My picks:
1. Super big boggle
2. Just one
3. Codenames pictures
4. Baldurdash
5. Taboo
Really want to try so clover. Poetry for neoderthrals sounds neat too.

When I Dream and Just One
Can't argue with that list....other than Codenames. I would add First Contact to mine.
Clever thumbnail!
My guys, any game before 2010 is very old in my opinion
Werewords is my favorite word game.
Chris, you need to rework this list until you can put Just One on it. 😛

Trapwords!
What? No mention of Perquackey.
Take a letter, Upwords, typo, word thief, taboo, guesstures, hit or miss, word sweep, quiddler, jot, word on the street, scrabble cooking edition……I’d like to try Mystic Paths
No Letter jam? Sad
Kerflip …. Is the best word game that no one ever mentions.
Werewords is better than Insider!
Cross Clues
No Just One? Hmm.
I dont understand the thumbnail. Why would you guess DICEY if you already know the 5 letters used are W O R T E
Also Inkling is pretty fun
how is word on the street not on this list? 😑😑
Warewords is a straight up rip off of Insider.
