Too many people accuse the church as being the source of mental health problems. However, the church has been a great support to me. I can honestly say that I wouldn't be alive without it.

For many, the members who are allowed among us and who know how to walk the walk and talk the talk, but are abusers - those are a great source of mental health problems for members. It is more traumatizing to see them get away with it, to know if you say anything you will be "the problem" and get a certain status in the community - so for many members it is easier to leave.
The examples they mentioned seemed like people in abusive situations where the abuse had been "taken out". I have not ever felt the spirit from someone who is bullying me or another person.

Say that to the LGBTQ who are always bashed by other youth and treated like 2nd class citizens. I could name a million reasons why one would want to leave. Just cause it’s good for some doesn’t mean it’s good for everyone.

We want to listen to those who have these feelings and see how we can help bring peace.
Often what they are really saying is "church member" abused me - and the Church did nothing about it, or enabled the abuser.
Most depression and mental health issues stem from abuse. The culture inside the church is a great set up for an abusive personality to get away with abuse, especially if the abuser knows how to work and manipulate the culture and protocols.
The recent news stories of the church paying victims of abuse, shows they know of the abuse, pay for silence, and not much of anything happens to the abuser.
Victims are aware that "coming out with allegation" will be more traumatic and unsupported than just suffering quietly.
It is hard to watch other people be abused by the abuser, but that is the culture they are in.
Most people who leave the church, leave because they were bullied, abused, or just generally felt they did not fit in somehow - often abusive personalities don't want "new people" or "tattletails" around.

We need to place ourselves in paths that bring light. I have learned to identify triggers that cause anxiety or negative thoughts. Prayer with the invitation to walk with Christ each day has been key. Tuning out media, movies, music or conversations that cause the spirit to withdraw, bring Peace. The Lord knows our heart and will use us to be an instrument in his hands, by his design. We do not need to compare ourselves to anyone else. The Lord loves us unconditionally.

We need to exercise all the spiritual faith and strength possible but on the other hand our church leaders also need to speak to us straight about temporal issues we face like poor personal decisions, lack of self discipline, lack of initiative, destructive government policies that cause untold damage to all of us. We can pray about all these things for strength to make it through the challenges but none the less the temporal challenges are real as well as spiritual challenges.

Powerful stuff Stephen! Thanks so much for all you do, and for bringing up these hard and sensitive topics. That question "Why won't God just heal me?" really hits hard. I love the thought shared by Sister Runia about Paul and his "thorn in the flesh". We so often pray for healing or seek Priesthood blessings and wonder why the Lord doesn't just take our burdens away. One of the General Authorities once said: "Do we have the faith NOT to be healed?", which has always stuck with me. Suffering and trials help refine us and help us turn to God in a way that perhaps nothing else can. Not to mention how they also affect those around us. The suffering and the difficulty will make the day of our resurrection that much more sweet. As Lehi said "for it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things..."

I really love your channel Stephen and really appreciate all that you’re doing in your perspectives. This is such an important topic and I am so grateful for all the resources that have become available for missionaries - - a lot of these are not available when I served which was between 08 to 10 and so thankful to see that these were able to get rolled out afterwards. My wife’s mission president worked at the new MTC and it’s cool to hear all of the things that implemented there to help with mission mental health as well. I have always loved Sister Aburto’s perspectivesfrom her tough conversion. Background. I wasn’t as familiar with Sister Runia, but really loved her as well. I really respect the work that Elder Jackson is doing and know that is a huge responsibility which isn’t a major understatement to help with the mental/physical health of all the 70,000 missionaries in the field now.
I respectfully felt he could have emphasized more more of that, although it is important for us to be action, focused and do everything in our part we need to do that in context of our relationship with Christ and it’s not the grace kicking in at the end but that makes the whole difference . At least in my experience, it’s harder to go fully headfirst into amfixing a mental health issue in a systematic , organized task-centered way when we have faced a traumatic or major medical event the same way we fix issues when we are mentally and emotionally well . I feel during a mental health crisis it’s sometimes more like we are like Peter on the sea, or the woman with the blood issu who can only reach out to Christ which is a good analogy of giving the small
Widows mite the mentally ill can to ask for medical /professional help-I I found a times for my own mission president wife who also were amazing, but maybe just didn’t know how to be as sensitive to these issues and may have been a generational thing but not intended to be unhelpful and something we are all learning . All in all though, so happy for this discussion and that this is made available and we can continue to learn and grow to help one another with this important issue as Men’s & women’s hearts are increasingly failing so we can allow Christ to heal our hearts.

One thing that helps me in the morning when I’m in bed and my OCD and anxiety are feeding on each other and creating depression, is remembering Christ’s atonement. His atonement is infinite, and it helps the world in infinite ways, and on infinite paths, and for each individual, including the worst people and the best people, you and me. “Come unto me all ye that labour (mentally, physically, morally, spiritually) and are heavy laden…and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you…and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

I've suffered since 10 from mental and physical problems. Some meds have worked, but since my hysterectomy, depression became much worse. Lost most of my family, suffered abuse, and church members reject me, and I feel isolated and alone. I've tried a lot of things because I can't hear the Lord. It makes me feel like He doesn't care. Tried TMS, which gave me hope for a while. I praised God, and then after a short time, it stopped working. I've had so much opposition, and yet I've helped so many because of my compassion. I can't seem to feel good anymore, and told the Lord I can't live this way anymore. Still He won't heal me after all I've suffered. I've had few happy days. I'm grateful I had goodly parents and a loving grandma, but they are all gone. He left me all alone. People in the church don't care or understand. 😢

It is truly hard when you feel alone. I have often wondered why some of us struggle so much. I have come to realize that we face struggles for many reasons. First we struggle because we are mortal and live in an imperfect world. Second we think if we are not healed God doesn't love us which isn't true. Sometimes our trials and struggles are to reach others. Keep trying and have faith. I know you can find Peace in Christ. Keep searching, praying, following God, and find ways to quietly serve others. Seek for help! I know how hard it is to suffer and feel alone. You are not alone. God is out there and there is help. Please remember that Jesus Christ understands your suffering even if nobody else does. Also oftentimes people are distant because they don't know or understand. They may want to help but just don't have the words. We are all trying to press forward in our weaknesses.

Everyone in the world is having strain and trials. BUT.. if you took the statistics of all the members in the world and found which area has the highest in depression and other mental disorders, I would bet money that Utah leads in every statistic. There is a bubble there that is hard to explain. Most of the youth in general don’t have to develop thicker skin because they are surrounded by their same faith. Development of emotional strength from friction, handling social differences. The competition alone for best in class mixed with self judgment would cause anyone to have issues.

If people were more honest about the real reason for coming home there would be less of a stigma. I don’t see why his counsel for the missionary to go home is a bad thing, perhaps it’s case by case. Can’t really assume he tells every missionary struggling with anxiety the same thing

Remind the youth of who they are. Sons and daughters of God. He loves them and wants them to be happy and to succeed. Every day they need to be hearing this. Teach them that they need to be blameless and that comes because of repentance every day. And because we repent we become righteous this is all because of Jesus Christ the Holy Son of God. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son. That whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

Depression is from a lack of vitamins, minerals, hormones, neurotransmitters. Typically after a long winter, vitamin D3 is deficient and 200 processes in the body can't function without vitamin D3. One can't absorb Vitamin D without magnesium. And if one doesn't have vitamin D, they can not absorb Testosterone, nor can they absorb Cortisol, the stress hormone. And doctors are doing a great disservice by not testing all vitamins and minerals, hormones and neurotransmitters to figure out what is wrong with people.

When I have to do a certain job which requires me to be in a lift up 20 ft the noise of the anxiety while being in that position is so loud that the anxiety shakes me to the point where I almost give up. Our weaknesses are for a purpose, and we chose these weaknesses while we were in the pre-existence and we need to appreciate them and embrace them so that we can become strong.
