Did the show ever say that they're dime store romance novels? When they talk about the book they make it sound more "literature" than that - and I'm sure Barbara thinks she's writing literature. This was way before self-publishing, writing online, etc, were so easy - so I think in this era, someone just being "published" was kind of a big deal. Doesn't excuse Barbara not being nice, but it goes to help explain why Dorothy thinks she's a big deal.
Barbara definitely isn't the "literary intelligentsia" she refers to in another scene, but Dorothy is so happy to be able to have a friend to discuss art, literature and current events with that she overlooks Barbara's subtle rudeness and snobbery up to a point.
Dorothy struck me as someone who always longed to be one of the cool/popular kids in highschool. So I can understand why she would be taken in by a callous person such as Barbara...
Blanche truly gave Barbara exactly what she deserved in this scene. Also love when Sophia brushed Barbara aside. She doesn't give a crap about Barbara or her arrogance.

The worst thing about gang stalking is u can pull anybody off the street and give them 20 to haze someone and they don't know they are abusing people if the gang that gets you to haze them doesn't tell them and they aren't going to say an intro duction like oh we're the gang stalkers they don't play it that way

For someone to take Sophia seriously is to tell you how little sense of humor and how shady that person is. And Barbara sure did come across someone to roast her before Dorothy did at the end, Blanche. You get back what you put out there. And even Sophia saw right through Barbara before Dorothy did. Sophia was like; "Woman...bye, I got better people to look forward to meeting up with".
The episode eventually makes it quite clear that she is a bigot, but the show did not want to give too much away with the title. Also, her extremely snobby behavior from the beginning foreshadows the revelation of her darker prejudices at the episode's end. The writers did not want to make her a sympathetic character, and they wanted to make a point about the red flags people often miss or choose to ignore when an individual is able to charm or impress with wit, flattery, and pretentiousness.
