Finally I have found the Channel I’ve been looking for. I’m new to the hobby but I haven’t bought anything yet. Since Christmas I’ve been down a rabbit hole researching RC cars , RC racing etc etc. I’m looking forward to working my way through your videos. Great job Gavin 😃👍
@@RCKickschannel Thanks Gavin. It looks a great Hobby. No wonder you have so many cars, you’re a lucky chap. What appeals to me is a 1/10 e buggy, 1/8 nitro buggy and a 1/10 crawler. It can be never ending but I think that’s a good mix for a newbie. Budget allowing obviously. Keep up the good work 👍😃
Another top tip!! Keep your masking tapes in a nice clean plastic box. The usual food storage type things youll have in the kitchen are perfect. The reason being, if you leave them lying about the edges of the roll can get bashed, which means every time you lay down some tape that damaged edge will let paint bleed underneath. The same gors for all the crap and grit that'll stick to the sides of the roll as it gets moved about on your workbench.
Awesome video idea. I am one that believes everyone should build a kit at least once. Heck my first traxxas was a 2wd slash unassembled kit. I have bought more unassembled kits than rtr's. My first rc car was the tamiya grasshopper back in 1983 when I was 13 years old. And boy oh boy I had a smile on my face the whole time I built it. A memory I will never forget.
Thanks mate this really helped a newbie’s understanding of what’s involved in getting into the weeds. I’m looking at building my first Tamiya. I haven’t had any RC since Christmas 1988 and Dad built that one for me so can’t wait to get started.
Pretty much 40 years since I built my first Tamiya (Frog) and that's the first time I've ever heard of JIS screws and screwdriver. My poor cars, thank you for highlighting that Gavin. I have to admit now I just purchase the appropriate machine screw (hex) kit for the car so it's not an issue.
Great video mate, I have been into this hobby for year's now, and watched this for entertainment. I was really impressed with how you explained what's what. you didn't make it scary to a beginner, which is great 👍
Great video Gav, ive seen a few people get confused about what to buy when starting out. I’ll just send them this link 👍 1 to turn, 2 to burn is how i rememberd it back in the day 😁
Nice introductory video, great for beginners. Having bought a fair few pairs of Lindström cutters like you show around 6:26 as a professional electronics guy, I can attest they are a little bit more than the Core-RC ones... like north of £70 these days even if you buy a dozen pairs at a time. However they are the best side cutters money can buy for delicate electronics stuff IMHO.
You can see why a total beginner would just stick with an RTR for sure. The issue with that is, the person misses out so much as once you have built the kit, it really does feel like you accomplished something and it feels more special and yours. You just don't get that with RTR stuff. I guess it just comes from putting in time and effort and that's the two things people lack more than anything these days. Shame.
I personally think setting esc's on fire and having to throw them out of the living room window is part of the fun of learning :D. Maybe thats not for everyone so maybe your advice is more sensible :). Top video as always Gavin :)
Fantastic guide!😊 One request: could you make a separate video about motors, pinions, and turns? It would be awesome to get a deeper dive into those topics. 🚗🔧 Thanks for making the process less overwhelming!
i just found your channel I'm building the a110 and getting extra bodies so i can take the matching rc cars to car shows with the full size cars im also after a renault 5 maxi turbo shell to match a John Price rally car
Very good video! We need to do more fore the beginners now! The only thing I missed is the caliper gauge. Nobody talkes about one of the most important things to have! 🐄💨
I’ve built a few kits in my time (not to many tamiyas) but even I learned something new from this video. I had no idea the tamiya hardware was JIS and not Phillips and I’m meant to be an engineer 😞. Thanks again for the great content
Fantastic video. I'm on my second build, the tamyia TT-02 1998 Ford Escort. I'm going for a pearl white body, can I back it in white then in black to make it look better through the windows?
done a few tamiya kits in the past never done box art always do my own style never had a shelf queen just not got the patience one colour usially candy orange or green some decals n off you go
You can also use a #11 blade to cut out the bodies! I’ve gone exclusively to blades for this but it took time to perfect. It’s much easier the more you do it. Using scissors lacks precision and can split the lexan. The cuts are usually more jagged too. Try it and keep trying it. 😅
Good video Gavin. Was thinking about doing something like this. Did my Tamiya Hornet build series instead. Might do another painting tutorial. I love painting oddly enough. Got 3 clear shells without chassis to fit them on now. Just waiting for the right kit to match them to.
Possibly explain the radio more, you can race different models from one radio that is true. But some like myself thought that I could switch on and park a few cars and switch between driving whichever car I fancied from the radio. That is not true, the radio can only run one car, the actual different models you can run from the radio are actually different settings to suit each model.
I have parked up three cars and jumped between each one from the transmitter. You obviously have to swap models on the transmitter but whats wrong with that? You can't expect different cars to all use the exact same settings now right?
@@RCKickschannel I couldn't do that, it only controlled the one car but with everything different unless I switched everything off which set up do you have where you can control different cars at a switch from the controller please, I need one
Radiolink. I think what you could be hitting is the receiver timing out when it doesn't connect after a few mins. I will take a look tomorrow and see if I can reproduce is after five mins. It will make a good video short.
@@RCKickschannelyes after chatting with a few people today that feature is on Radiolink, its ID SEED I believe. Though we did experiment with Sanwa and futaba and a flysky but that feature seemed to not be available as 3 cars were turned on with each transmitter and they were all being controlled but according to the model settings on the radio so some were steering opposite, some were forward/ reverse different and basically there seemed no way to individually control cars just by switching models on the transmitter. So perhaps I was mislead thinking that it was not possible, but perhaps it is a feature only available on certain brands of radio or perhaps the £350 plus price range. Basically I just think it's misleading that even cheap radio's put the idea in people's head that they can switch between models and drive them just by switching between on a the transmitter. If you find that it can be done across the board show us a video, or perhaps make it clear which radio systems do support this feature as the Radiolink one complete with 10 receivers just to have this feature would be a massive expense. Cheers dude
I found that flat clear tip really great. So basically you tape, apply flat clear where the border will be between 2 colours which will avoid bleeding, correct ? The coloured paint has no issue showing through after it has been sprayed on top of flat clear ? Flat clear is normally meant to give a matt effect on the outside glossy look, right?
So much good information👌 I’m wondering if there’s a kit or a feature you recommend checking for when looking to purchase a kit with the intention on making your own car body. I’m looking to make my own car perse 😅 are there some kits that come without the body?

Do you need to paint the body right away or could you wait a bit and just work on the main driving part of the car I don’t know much about them at all thinking about maybe looking at some
i wonder how many kits get built these days without upgrading to bearings right from day 1 with bearings being one of the cheapest upgrades i think hardly any one uses the plastic bushings so why dont tamiya just supply em, surely the saving in price isnt really worth it considering tamiya i am sure could source bearings much cheaper than even we can by buying online and the customer will be much happier knowing its one less item to order

Damn, I thought with a 3d printer and cheap aliexpress parts I could get away spending a reasonable amount for a little project. NOPE. This is discouraging to say the least. It's half a grand investment for a hobby that could just be another of my hyperfocus fixations.
Even though I'm not a beginner it's the best beginner video I've every seen for building your first car, excellent video!!!

Providing a beginners guide is very cool.
When it comes to R/C everyone needs to build a kit or kits at some point.

Great watch, highly recommended for first time builders. 👌
Wow a lot of Stuff Beginners need😅 I am happy to find the most of this in my Garage👍
Great video. I always remember with receivers.1 to turn and 2 to burn!
And take the protective wrapper off the shell at the end. 🙂

Great video. Of course the more kits you buy/build/run the more cost effective many of these things become!
Very true!
My theory as well… But now I need a larger flat to store all the cars I built 😅
Very good video! u covered a lot of bases for alot of beginners.

Welcome to RCKicks 👍🏻👍🏻 thanks for watching the show.
Great video with so much to cover. Unless I missed it a kit ESC also needs to be setup for transmitter throttle neutral and endpoints.
Most just work but yes you should set the throttle end points on the ESC and the steering end points.

for receiver channels.. "one for turnin' two for burnin'" easy way to remember the channel thing
Fantastic video. I'm on my second build, the tamyia TT-02 1998 Ford Escort. I'm going for a pearl white body, can I back it in white then in black to make it look better through the windows?
Yes back it with white and then light silver. After that back it in black. Well worth it in the end 👍🏻
Receiver one to turn , two to burn 👍🏻

I find the blade way works well for me on some things and not others. Like you say, it takes a while to get good at it.

Whats best !stick transmitter or steering wheel type as 30+ years ago i had stick type only, whats your opinion gavin? Many thanks

A simple kit that you can get with no body is the Tamiya TT02. 4WD and low cost.
What's channel 3 for on receiver ? Even thou transmitter is only 2 channel.

That is the question
Is there a chance for tamiya to re release the Ferrari f40 the one before 2000,ot was my favorite rc model, do you know where to find it
No I don’t think so, not unless the licensing agreement changes.
I want to convert an bruder truck to rc what servo for the steering and the dump? o yeah what motor shoud i buy?
Can you recommend some Tamiya racing truck? Are there any in 1/10?
I love the look of the Tamiya Fat Fox but that body is a bit of a challenge
Will the Blazer be finished......
At some point. It’s not far off now. Front grill and top wing
