I got major respect for Bow Wow for working with Smack to bring the UFF tournament to national TV with 106 and Park. That tournament alone featured future battle rap stars and veterans like Ill Will, Brizz, T-Top. Danny Myers, Chess, Lotta Zay, Real Deal, Dot, Prep & more. That tournament brought a lot more attention to battle rap and introduced more to the sport
I’ll never forget coming home from school and flipping through the tv and seeing UFF. I was in middle school at the time. I’m 21 now and I have been tuned in with battle rap since.
Surf has records that should be in radio rotation here NY, NJ, CT, PA, 💯%… Bro has 3 classic albums I kno this sounds crazy but before I had the opportunity to meet surf on a few occasions meeting him was bigger to me than meeting anybody on the radio with a top 10 record bc thats what I listen to thats what I relate to… He doesn’t have to dumb himself down to make a good record which is where so many other battle rappers fall short… Low Key Geechi makes 🔥 music too‼️‼️
The issue is simple not everyone knows how to make good music. Just because you can rap well doesn't mean you can create top tier songs. Cannibus is a better rapper than Ja and 50, but Ja and 50 know how to write hooks and know how to ride the beats with a melody.
Listen to poet laureate canibus is a beast, Wyclef beats on his first album made people never want to check for him again, he made dope music after the first album but no one paid attention to it

Cassidy & Eminem are perfect examples of battle rappers who still knew how to make hit songs. Most battle rappers are used to writing for an opponent which make it hard to transition into topics with a bigger , broader focus . Most regular/ Industry artist write with the intention of capturing the masses . Also regular artist focus more on creating catchy hooks than per say a battle rapper would when making a record.
Cassidy n Em weren't battle rappers....showing up to a block when you dont know your opponent n just bringing your best 64 bars isn't battling eminem has never been booked to battle a guy sat down for 2 or 3 months n prepared 3 rounds for anyone
Yea but they both had elite producers (Dr.dre & Swizz beats) to help make hit songs. They probably couldn't do it without them unless it was some other too producers like Pharrell or timbaland
Man I was watching Reed dollaz body people in mid 2000's. I still remember watching Reed body some dude in the Bronx and lux was a young nobody just watching. Philly dudes was battling early. Word up!

Battle rap is a subculture. Musicians and artists will always be on a more grand scale under the category of music. People want to “feel good” more than hear tricky words.
In their example, Calicoe is a battle rapper who made a song centered around the battle rap world named “WWF” and it is a very valid style of song for a battle rapper. So agreed, it can work. He even shout out JJDD innit.
I don't know why more battle rappers don't try to make records like Griselda. Just get some grimey, dope beats, get in the booth and rap. There's an audience for that
It’s not just the records Griselda makes it’s the art, album covers, clothing merch, marketing and samples Westside Gunn knows how to draw ppl in to what they’re doing
First time I watched battle rap. I remember coming home from school every Friday to watch Chess go crazy. I was like 14 but Chess was so close to my age and was killing dudes older than him. It was good TV
But, if music is easy to make in this era, you can make battle rap music for the fans of battle rap to use as a form of battling. It can be like trading cards for the battle rap medium IN other words, you can have the music be part of the anticipation for the live battle, and have both participants make dis songs towards each other. Now, you have a battle of the music, and the live performance This will be their music to walk to the stage with along with the sit down interviews
Yep Mecca said it all Again , listening to bow wow old debut singles gat me really siding nodding right to Mecca , I am 41years grew up to bow wow as 20year old watched the like mike movies etc , still listen to” let me hold you down” nostalgic because it takes me back to those early and mid 20years hood ole years and same will apply for female fans at 40s and late 40s they will relate and so will thier daughters and younger females but for battle rappers it will only have an impact that one time on stage and maybe a few short years in memory but not for decades and generation to another generation
Question: Why can't battle rappers transition to recording artists? Answer: Nobody wants to hear songs on how good you rap or songs filled with a bunch of punchlines, metaphors and similes. Nobody is entertained by a whole album of punchlines, metaphors and similes. I think Redman was the only rapper to successfully sustain himself with punchlines, metaphors and similes. He's a serious exception. And, honestly? I never bought his shyt after his sophomore album. Were his other albums good? Yes, of course. But, honestly? I noticed all of my weed-head, loser-ish friends found his music very entertaining. And, no, there was no Canibus effect. I bought his album many many moons ago. He mostly rapped about how good he could rap. And then on one song, if I remember correctly, he tried to rap about amphibian aliens or some shyt. That probably could've been something, given Hip Hop's love of sci-fi, if he fleshed out the concept a lot more. And don't be confused, I gave Canibus a few tries. I bought a few of his joints. I actually liked Poet Laureate. But, guess what? I am the exception to the rule on consumer marketing. I will listen to almost any rap album at least once.
The real issue is we don’t buy a lot of music and we have tendency to listen to the fickle groups that will not continue to support .. and ignore the commercial crowd that’s buying music
A rap battle is 3 or 4 minutes a round so essentially its 3 songs you write and can never use again for the rest of your life...A smart thing to do if it's legally possible is to do shows in different cities with the same material for people that didn't witness it live in person
Sorry but after Free and AJ 106 & park started to go down hill and they were just reaching for people to host, and Bow wow took the opportunity becasue truthfully his team probably seen he was going to struggle transitioning from child star to adult star, which unfortunately they couldn't prevent because he has been struggling. Maybe they shoulda had him invest his money like a raven Symone and other child stars so that he could live off the investments and venture into different businesses. the problem is who is to say his team didn't try to show him the way and he just was being arrogant and doing his own thing, as have seen with his relationship with JD. I get he credits Snoop and others, but JD and SoSo Def put him on the map and they used 106& park as a platform to get him the fanbase he had at that time.
I mean struggling feels like a yoga stretch. Maybe he could be bigger relative to where he started. He’s been extremely successful though as a multi-hyphenate in that transition (hosting, acting, rapping). He also still has the ability to generate opportunity on relevance alone.
@@maxwellvanhook7872 nah he tried Growing up Hip hop and that was a fail. now he jsut needs to stick to growing up. this interview though i feel like he is in the process of maturing and i love to see it.
It’s time for labels to actually sign battle rappers as BATTLE RAPPERS! Allow the battle rap industry to evolve even more. Battle rappers should stop trying to convert over to mainstream when they are orchestrating a different cinema than an musician. Music Labels need to wake up !
