  • Radioactive Iodine Therapy is a common treatment for hyperthyroidism. This is a geiger counter measurement of our cat coming home right after being discharged from the vet. When I measured him earlier, it actually seemed to go above 64,000 and rolled over to 2000-3000 briefly!

I did some math. You'd have to cuddle your cat for 7,211 hours to die of radioactive poisoning.
Edit: Ok, someone asked how I did the math, so I redid it just to confirm, and, unsurprisingly, I made a mistake.
    Explanation:
I counted the time to die of radioactive poisoning, not from radiation induced causes. The 100% unsurvivable dose of radiation is 3 Sv(Sieverts). On the card at the start of the video, we can see that 1000 Cpm is 6.5 uSv(microsieverts). Author says in the description that his readings were about 64,000 Cpm || 6.5 x 64 = 416 uSv/h || 3Sv = 3,000,000 uSv || 3,000,000 / 416 = 7,211 hours of exposure.

    • @parkerb4449
      @parkerb4449 3 месяца назад +222

@@amishgoatmilker No, the cat is genuinely radioactive. The video description explains it a bit but basically, your thyroid is a gland in your body (and this cat's body) that produces hormones that regulate all sorts of functions. Your thyroid is also pretty much the only organ in your body that absorbs and stores iodine. If your thyroid (or this cat's thyroid) is overproducing hormones, you can treat it by giving them a radioactive form of iodine that is rapidly absorbed by the thyroid and neutralizes and kills some of the cells in a pretty uniform way. This cat is pretty fresh from treatment, so the iodine is very radioactive, but it will decay quickly. That being said, he will need to sleep in their own room for a week or so to lower the odds of cancer for other members of the household. He also can't be around pregnant people or children for a bit.

This is 131I which is given to humans and animals alike for the treatment of hyperthyroidism.

      - It's like ~0.275 mSv/h, you're probably fine up to 100 mSv. Acute illness starts at a few hundred mSv (yes, this is enough to make the cat "sick", but it was sick before)
      - Pet your cat, but don't sleep next to your cat (or stay close to them for more than a few hours.
      - Don't pet the cats if this is your job (use a stick or something), just like X-rays are pretty safe a few times per year, but not a few times per day.
      - I'm pretty sure radioiodine (pretty sure that's what they gave the cat, probably doing thyroid ablation) decays to something stable, and has a radiological half life of ~8 days. I think if you count the typical biological half life of the iodine in a cat (excess iodine getting excreted) it's closer to 4 days. So in like 40 days (10 half lives) the cat won't be very radioactive at all, and in 80 days (10 radiological half lives) the same applies to the litter.
      - Funranium Labs has a blog post or Twitter thread on this topic, having worked in a facility doing this sort of therapy. Allegedly the worst part of the job was not being allowed to pet the inpatient cats.

It looks like this is coming back into rotation so I'll clarify for people:
That style of meter (GM tube) can be set off by static electricity (like cats get), so the actual radiation level may be much lower. Hold a Geiger meter up to a fluorescent light to see what I mean.
That meter also indicates "danger" at 1.30 mR/h. The actual industrial limit is 5 mR/h, and you should get really worried at 50 mR/h (appx 76k counts).
So really, probably nothing to be too worried about.

to be fair that card is really cautious as those levels are no where near dangerous. for example the 13 microseiverts per hour exposure would take an entire year to increase your risk of getting cancer. the cat had a peak of 21 times that which is actually kinda high that you probably wouldn't want the cat laying on your chest when you sleep at night as its the same as getting one chest x ray every hour and a half its laying on you. still wouldn't actually hurt you though.

I had some questions, so I turned to google and wikipedia.
It suggests this is Iodine-131, with a half-life of a little over 8 days, 90% beta radiation, 10% gamma. Given in high doses because it is more likely to kill nearby tissue instead of causing it to mutate.
If the Nuclear Radiation Safety guide is to be believed, I would guess it takes 88 to 120 days before the cat can be cuddled again (depending on whether you start at 64000 or 42000 as seen in the video), but then again, I would guess the card is about continuous doses in an area, rather than localized sources. And while I found some suggested CPM to sievert conversions for Co60 and Cs137, I didn't find it for Iodine. And I guess it doesn't work that way anyway.
What is the recommendation from the doctor? When is it safe to have the cat sleep on your lap again?

takes about 2 weeks for the cat to be safe again. Consider that there's a biological half-life to the iodine as well as the regular half-life. The cat's pissing it out at the same time it's decaying. You have to hold on to the litter for 80 days though.

its kinda funny but when people (and animals) undergo treatments that involve radioactive elements being put in their bodies (such as iodine and technetium), usually they're instructed to stay inside and away from people for a day or two to allow it to decay enough to be less radioactive, because iodine-131 has a half-life of about 8 hours, and technetium-99m has a half-life of about 6 hours, and waiting 2 day allows Tc-99m to undergo 8 half-lives, and I-131 to undergo 6 half-lives, making them significantly less radioactive, but they will still be measurably radioactive until it fully leaves their bodies and decays.
